    Here's my Type I Rev 1892 O in an AU 58 holder:

This was a raw find several years ago. The OBV cap has a bonus feature:

And the base of the neck another:

Not as nice as Lenny's example, but it does have entertainment value.

    I love them Barber Halves.....

Here is another newp, 1900-O BQ in N45:

EDIT: Type I / II. Relatively more common than some of the other more interesting transitional options.

Somehow I am a week off. It was last Sunday, July 24th, 5 years ago Mike Hayes passed. RIP. Provenance of this '05-S goes back to a Mike Hayes ownership:

I’ve got about a half dozen VF Barber halves I purchased from Mike … coins I bought from him about 10 years ago. I’ll see if I can dig them out and take pics. Miss you MFH.

Feigenbaum and NGC Explorer comments. PCGS CoinFacts does not comment:

Scarce, but not as tough as the 1905-O. A good date in AU and MS. Comes with a good strike and often proof-like. Some have planchet striations. Undervalued in most grades except gem. Though it comes nice, I have seen very few flashy certified coins. Most have had mottled toning or been dipped out. After a one-year hiatus, the San Francisco Mint returned to quarter dollar production in 1905 with a mintage of 1.8 million pieces. The lack of an S-mint delivery in 1904 probably resulted in considerable economic demand for the '05-S issue, and, indeed, this date is equally as elusive as the 1904-O and 1905O in Mint State.

This newp, per seller's pictures, seems mottled. I am pre-guessing it will be "dipped out" but we will see. - Tim

A few months back I decided to sell my MS Barber Halves and just focus on core sets like the Everyman Barber Half set. I certainly like the look of MS coins, but it just felt like "dead" money laying around to me (since I wasn't assembling a MS set). I sent them off to a very reputable female dealer to sell on consignment.

A month or so past I posted a 1910 S sent raw to PCGS hoping it would come back in an AU 58 (+) holder:

It sure looked circulated to me, and is a very attractive coin. To my surprise it came back in a MS 62 holder. I was thinking about cracking it out and trying again for a 58, but decided to not spend good money after bad and part ways with it. I sent it off to the same coin dealer with a bunch of other stuff to sell. I thought some of the pieces might benefit from a trip to CAC before selling.

I received a call yesterday to discuss which pieces should be sent to CAC. The 1910 S Half wasn't on the list. I was surprised- it's such a beautiful coin. I inquired why it wouldn't be sent- the comment back was "it's a circulated coin, it won't be stickered". At least I'm not crazy. I wonder why PCGS is currently allowing "sliders" to pass as MS these days? Too many AU coins in the market?

    I love them Barber Halves.....
  • JeffMTampaJeffMTampa Posts: 3,278 ✭✭✭✭✭

Although I really liked the 1910 S Barber Half posted above, it didn't fit into the Everyman set I'm trying to complete. I found this one last week that works:

Now I'm down to needing 3 AU 58's to complete it:

    • 1895 S
    • 1899 O
    • 1901 O

If we didn't have the PCGS Everyman set, I'm guessing my Barber Half accumulation would look quite different.

Received the coin today. It has a tar-like black on each side but underneath it, good coin! What do you think? Would it 3rd-party grade? Here is my image of the coin:

Possible long time storage in a leather type bag...oils from the tanning process secreted onto the coin maybe?
Look at the area next to her neck looks as though someone tried to clean(scratch) of some of the toning.
To much going on...I wouldn't think it would strait grade.

I was just thinking the other day that I hadn't bought a raw coin in a while, so I started to look for upgrades for my Dansco set of Barber quarters. I found this one:

  • seduloussedulous Posts: 3,218 ✭✭✭✭✭

Good job Jed! an '11-P in, say, XF40? (VF35 on a bad day).

The '05-S, one other thing, a slight mintmark repunching maybe?

    Tim- your '05 S Quarter looks a bit like my '97 S:

I purchased it raw- it straight graded. My belief is it's toning that's been there for a very long time. I think the coin will grade, AU 50 to 53.

As far as the RPM, I'm in the "No" camp without better magnification. I believe all that's there are some dings on the MM.

Jeff, I like your 10-S as a 62 and I would try to CAC it.
    Vern, beautiful 96 dime!

This newp graded PC-30 and I added the CAC. It's going to replace an AU-55 that I have in my second set.

I got tired of a hole in my collection so I filled it, but am on the lookout for a small upgrade:

  • JeffMTampaJeffMTampa Posts: 3,278 ✭✭✭✭✭

    Here's a new pickup from May that I finally got around to photographing, a 1909 S 25C:

It was purchased on eBay from Canada in a 1909 (no S) PCI holder. They missed the MM, but I think they got the grade right. It might even 53.
