A new raw purchase from @amwldcoin showed up in the mail yesterday, a 1900 O Barber Quarter:
This is the scarce Type III OBV paired with the Type II REV. IT will be sent to the grading room at some point; I'm thinking a VF 35. On a good day it could come back as a XF 40; a bad day in a details holder for the scratch on the back.
Haven’t posted on this thread in a long time. Remember posting quite a bit when it first started. Picked up this 63 at a coin show today and the other 2 over the past few weeks. Afraid I still like the barbers
@JeffMTampa said: @vulcanize nice honest looking Barber Halves that served our commerce well. Thanks for posting.
Thank you. Am wondering if PCGS would would have any specials at the upcoming Baltimore show because I would love to have some of the Liberty Head half dollars in my Dansco 7150 graded.

Nice pickup bj on the new 1914 pcgs ms63 barber half, and not a bad price at that!
Listen. Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony. Will’sProoflikes
@vulcanize Would the thinking be to replace those 3rd-party graded with lower-graded specimens (obviously in raw state)? as Jed says, it looks like a nice Dansco set.

Thank you. Seeing them as a full set in a Dansco cockles the heart.

To be brutally honest, at the very begining, filling up a Dansco was the ultimate aim and achieved that for quite a few sets.
But after seeing some of the slabbed beauties on here, the mind wants to get into the registry game whereas the pocket book says to slow down.
The Morgans were the one that sparked the quest because of wanting some of the key dates graded, so as to not fall for all the fakery out there.
Never got to cracking them out and popping inside the Dansco and instead started a whole new lowball slabbed coin set. Not too happy now looking at some of the dogs in the set, knowing that I could have upgraded some of them to better grades for marginally more.
The thinking process has now slowly shifted to wanting to get existing ones slabbed, spin off the ones that could be upgraded yada yada.
Truth is that am really not sure which way to head now and am a cat on the fence, so to speak.
If my memory is correct Mike Hayes passed away in July, 2017. He really had no family (he was single) other than a nephew that he was trying to get into coins. Mike had many friends, however.
I exchanged PCGS messages, Facebook messages, and emails with Mike for years. We bought and sold a few Barbers from each other as well. Mike leaned more toward the halves...me, the quarters. He also used to email me images of his new purchases, which I would resize down for him, and send back, so that he could post them to these boards. Let's just say Mike wasn't super technical! I eventually taught him how to do it himself. He was always so thankful. Even though we had never met in person, or even spoken on the phone, our friendship continued to develop. I really felt like I knew the man.
Then, about 10 years ago, I lost two of my brothers within 30 days. Toughest month of my life. Mike somehow found my cell number, and called me when he heard the news. That phone call truly meant the world to me, and it told me everything I ever needed to know about Mike F Hayes. Tremendous man. So happy to see him honored with this thread. Well deserved.

Always looking for original, better date VF20-VF35 Barber quarters and halves, and a quality beer.
I met Mike for the first time at the Chicago WFoM in 2013 at the BCCS meeting. We are both in the picture on page 1 of this thread. I can kick myself for not taking the time out of my schedule and sign-up for the Summer Seminar Barber class in Co. Springs with Glenn Holsonbake when he was still alive.
A Barber Quartet is made up of Nickels, Dimes, Quarters, and Halves.
Liberty Nickels appear to be much more popular than any of the other Barber series (in terms of number of Registry sets). The pop count on the above coin is 364 in MS 64. The mintage is 238,000- the lowest of the Liberty Nickel series by far. If one looks at the Pop counts on any of the Barber dimes, quarters, or halves there are tiny numbers for almost any date/ grade. I wonder why the huge discrepancy? And why are Liberty Nickels so much more popular?
Liberty nickels? One of the first (raw) sets I completed, and subsequently sold off. My guess as to their popularity would be that instead of 74 of them like quarters, there are more like 30 or so, and no major stoppers. Even the '85 and '86 are not hugely expensive in MS 64 - comparable to a G 4 quarter.
Edited to add: That's a nice looking '12 S Jeff!
My stash has both an AU 58 and MS 64 1912 S 5C. I noticed from looking at die cracks on them they were struck from the same die pair (OBV and REV) with at the exact same die state. Long odds on that....
I haven't added anything for quite a while, because I've only been looking at adding PCGS graded coins, but liked the tough and tumble look of this one, so here's a new slight upgrade for my Dansco set:
Because the thread has slipped so much I feel compelled to post something. Here's a Barber Half I picked up raw about 4 years ago at a reasonable price. I had it graded back when one could expect to receive their coins back within a couple of months:
Well, I got me a $150.00 gold PCGS Box from the FUN show trying it. After seeing a couple of molested BUTT UGLY 55's I figured PCGS would at least give me a + on that 01-S.
There are only 5 PCGS 55's in the POP reports.
Verne, the Bean had absolutely no influence on what I was willing to pay for this coin. Unless that 58 is really out there, and has a nice look, I think this one garners the top spot for the Everyman Set!

This is in an old green rattler holder:
I suspect this would grade higher than 63 if submitted today.

A few years after I finished the halves set I sold them off and used proceeds for other stuff, and I don't regret it at all.
@jedm average grade?

I sure do miss my FL friend Mike Hayes. Great dude. 😢

Mike is with us in spirit. He reads the thread every morning to keep up.
Grades varied from G to VG+ with just a few Fine and a couple VF.
I had just under $3,000 in the set - it was a fun endeavor.
Awesome. Mine's about $2100 (Dansco included).
The greysheet retail suggestion for G4 is about $3000 and the following link says $2600.

Darrell- tough to top that quarter. In that photo it looks like it could be a 58!
Changing from the CAC topic, I picked up a nice original looking raw 1912 S Quarter:
I'm guessing it's in the 30- 35 range. I'll probably send it in for grading, but it would make a nice album coin.
Darrell, I hope you didn't pay extra for that bean.
This one finally got back from the house, P62:
