<< <i>Perhaps it is me being grumpy guy, but I have been thinking that we might be better off by bulk-refusing PSA's requests for added money for minor stars. It seems like a clear money grab. If we decline, they get nothing; not the added fee or the original grading fee. I understand if they have the policy they do for Wayne Gretzky, Sidney Crosby, etc., but some of these don't make much sense at all. None of this is meant to be a dig on Derrick, who absolutely does us all a service by running this, or really even PSA, who I understand to be running a business. I just think the proper "market response" might be to say no. What good will a $10 group sub be if they decide to up-charge for more and more folks? >>
From what I can tell based on the dozen or so names I researched, it looks like they upcharged items that have a normal $50 authentication (including Ullman) rate or more. And still gave a bit of a discount from that normal rate.
Would you do $50 of work for $10?
Plus, lets not forget, when the regular price for authentication and slab went from $20 to $25, they still gave us the $10 rate.
Looking to have some custom cuts or plain custom cards built? PM me.
Like I said - I'm just the messenger. How they think a Gretzky auto'd card, Johnny Unitas, Reggie White, or a Jeter should command more than $250 is beyond me. But to get the majority of my autos done AND encapsulated for $10 - I'm a sucker what can I say? And to still get guys like Al Davis and Turk Edwards done for $45 instead of $75 - I guess it is what it is.
I will say (but not disclose who or what members) that there are autos that are well above the $250 threshold that will still be done for the $10 rate. It kind of seems like a lottery game.

I do want to be clear that I'm not upset about the price. Businesses can charge whatever they want to charge. It's a free country!
I am concerned, though, about a model of cheap bulk submissions + randomized expensive markups. The bulk rate is a means to get the cards sent in with the possible assumption that people that wouldn't otherwise pay the higher authentication rate would do so because "it's already there anyway". If that is the thinking and the standards can be changed sub-to-sub (as it seems it did between this one and the one previous), PSA could be expected to demand a higher rate for even more cards in the future. In my mind, it at least raises some questions about the value/viability of the group sub going forward.
Just food for thought. Clearly, I have no problem with others paying the up-charge. I have no problem with PSA asking for a higher rate for certain autos. But, we could think a bit about what kind of market dynamic that encourages...

I disagree that its random mark-up, they may be missing a bunch of items, but its the items that have always cost more to authenticate (whether justified or not).
I agree that its a change from previous subs, but it is something they should have been doing in the first place for all these subs.
The market dynamic it encourages, is one closer (but not over) to normal, everyday price.
If you have an issue with there regular rates for some of these guys, thats fine, but I think thats not relevant to the discussion of this situation.
Looking to have some custom cuts or plain custom cards built? PM me.
It's a good point. But I'm glad they still offer us free encapsulation and looks like they are giving a $5 discount on the $50 fees and a $30 discount on the $75 fees. I'm guessing my Guy Chamberlin was the full $75 price because it was an index card so it'll be a tall boy. But all the others are being done for $45 by the looks of it.
And I agree with Jeffrey - I don't think it's random. I just think they missed a few high dollar ones (which has happened each sub we've done). That's why I called it a lottery - if you were one of the lucky ones they didn't select of course.

Sure but there is no reason for Norm Ullman fee to be any more than the minimum fee they charge of $20. He is a hall of famer but he is not a tough get and it makes no sense that they charge $55 to authenticate his signature. And I've had his signature authenticated and encapsulated for $10 on the bulk subs I've done myself.
It's random in the sense that PSA picked a principle to apply an upcharge that was: --unannounced --a deviation from past practice --not based on scarcity/value(see snark RE: Norm Ullman--which can be generally applied..) --open to future change to some other principle (who is to say that $50 will be the threshold going forward?)
All of these things are fine. But, when they happen, and a lot of the board says "YES" to paying, it encourages more of it in the future, right? That's the free market.

His authentication fee is $50 - that's what drives this bulk submission. I remember the first bulk submission I ever did they upcharged me $10 more for Ollie Matson. I sent an ebay link asking why they'd upcharge him when I can get pack pulled certified autos of him for under $15. But I didn't create too much of a fit because overall it was still a darn good deal and I needed it slabbed for my HOF PC. But as to rhyme or reason - I don't have an answer for it.

Absolutely. I don't want to come off as ungrateful. I subbed a bunch because it's one of the best deals around. I will sub in the future if it stays at the $10 price point, for sure. And I will like it! But, I will be careful to review their list and avoid as many landmines as I can.

They are giving you the right to say no if you would like...they aren't forcing you to pay. It's also not really a deviation from past practice...they were pretty strict last go round. And that was the first time Veronica said they will honor it as a one time convenience - that they wouldn't guarantee the $10 rate going forward. So I think Jeffrey is right - when they increased the regular fee from $20 to $25 it probably came at the cost of them cracking down on our bulk submissions starting with the one we did in March.

<< <i>I'd rather deal with this than pay full $30 each for the other items they didn't upcharge. >>
I like the group sub. Clearly. I am just questioning the logic behind accepting the additional charges. >>
And thats fine. It comes down to the question...do we want/need it slabbed? If the answer is YES, we accept the additional charge or send it later on our own and pay even more. In my situation, I had 3; Harrison Ford...need slabbed to finish my slabbed cast. Cushing and Shaw...are being flipped to pay for the rest of the stuff. Don't slab now, dont profit and must sell other stuff to help cover the $10 items that are PC.
Looking to have some custom cuts or plain custom cards built? PM me.
I guess, I'll throw my 2 cents in here.....I agree with Allifax, I went to their site and randomly checked the individual price and then I went to JSA's site and the pricing was similar. Personally, they have all of the samplers that they need to authenticate the cards. On their side why should any of them be more expensive than the other to authenticate and slab. The process is still the same that they use to verify a Jim Thorpe autograph and a Josh Cribbs autograph. They raised there pricing across the board. I have two Al Davis's being slabbed, every other one they did was $10 and there are plenty of exemplars for him. Now I'm paying $45, but I still want him authenticated and slabbed so I will pay the price. It is what it is. My feeling is if we try and strong arm them and say no, then they will just say no to us on another submission.
I just received this from SGC:
August Autograph Special: Baseball, Basketball, Hockey, and Football cards, flat items, and memorabilia - $8.00 per standard signature for items being encapsulated or receiving the SGC Authentic alpha numeric Standard Certification card and sticker. Pricing not valid on multi-signed items or premium signers. Contact SGC Authentic for pricing on these items. Additional fee for oversized items.
no real update for this sub yet, but I did speak with Veronica on ways we can make these submissions a little smoother/quicker for the future. So for the regulars here are a couple changes that'll happen with our next one hopefully in January.
1) From now on all items are required to be submitted using card savers (or ultra pros are fine too). Currently I submit the items to PSA in the same fashion as I get them - so if they were toploaded that's how they went to PSA. From what Veronica says - if they aren't already in a card saver PSA will individually take them out of a top loader and put it in a card saver for their authenticators. I have ordered large quantity of Card Saver I, II, III, and IV to prepare for the future submissions. I can provide them for you at a cost but am also letting you know now so if you desire you can have some on hand for submission time. But again I'll be happy to provide them for you if needed for a small fee as well
2) the biggest change for the future is this. After I've received all items and put my spreadsheet together I will be uploading the list to Veronica before sending the package off. She will then go through and see which ones will be higher fees so we can get all those items squared away BEFORE the package ever leaves ND. We both agreed this would help the process greatly and we don't have any issues after PSA receives the package.
These two combinations should make for both quicker loggage time and hopefully poppage time as well.
If you have any questions/concerns please feel free to reply or PM me anytime.

Those are two good suggestions. Thanks for the update
We did VERY well overall - very high authenticity % this sub!!!
The third sub - the index cards and tall boys (with a few cards left over from sub #2) popped today. I should have them Tuesday in hand since Monday is a holiday.
For me I was disappointed in the Rozelle. It came from Jim Stinson who obtained it from Ron Gordon's collection. I have no doubt it is real. Oh well. SUPER excited for the Guy Chamberlin as I now officially only need 3 football HOF autos to have one of every HOFer. Three are in JSA slabs - the rest in PSA slabs

So glad to see the Ferguson slabbed. Bought it off of eBay for $2 about a year ago. Is there a more famous coach in soccer?
No idea how they authenticated the Bradley. I'll post a pic of the card when I get it back, but it seriously looks like he just waved a Sharpie in the general direction of the card. (Which is pretty much what he did to the card and jersey he signed for me.)
Twelve for twelve. SOOOOOOO Happy that my FOUR Chuck Such's passed. Will send the other four I have in next submission. Didn't know if they could pass them or not. << <i>I have so much to learn. I had never heard of Chuck Such or Sir Alex Ferguson. >>
The Canton Repository is the local newspaper where I live, where Chuck Such used to live and work, and where the Football HOF is located. On Sunday December 6th, 1959, Chuck had the Headline article that day. The Headline read " Pro Football Needs Hall of Fame, and Logical Site is Here" That article got the ball rolling for the Hall to be built in Canton. I got to talk on the phone to, Email with, and purchase some stuff from Chuck. I have a couple of absolute KILLER items in my collection, that I bought from Chuck. I also had asked him to sign EIGHT unlined 3 X 5 cards for me. He did, with various inscriptions. I know I am keeping THREE different ones for myself, I am giving one to a local friend who has helped me immensely with my autograph collection. The other FOUR will be available for sale, but since Chuck thought I was nuts for asking for his autograph, and he told me that he couldn't ever recall signing any before I asked him, I am guessing that they are very rare, and would be an autograph that other HOF "NUTS" like me, would very much like to have in their collection.

<< <i>Sir Alexander Chapman "Alex" Ferguson, CBE (born 31 December 1941) is a Scottish former football manager and player who managed Manchester United from 1986 to 2013. Ferguson managed East Stirlingshire and St. Mirren before a highly successful period as manager of Aberdeen. After briefly managing Scotland following the death of Jock Stein, he was appointed manager of Manchester United in November 1986.
Ferguson is the longest serving manager of Manchester United, overtaking Sir Matt Busby's record on 19 December 2010, eventually completing more than 26-and-a-half years as the club's manager. To begin with, I am NOT saying that Chuck Such is worth anything close to a Tim Mara, a Charles Bidwill, a Hugh Ray, a Joe Carr, or a Walt Kiesling. I am guessing you have no idea who any of those five guys are. They are without question, the 5 toughest auto's in the Pro FB HOF. If someone has one of those auto's they want to sell, in my opinion, they would be a fool to sell them on Ebay. The tough autographs sell either on the major auction sites, or in private sales. As I stated, I have ZERO intention of selling them on Ebay. But the fact that there are zero listed, or in the completed listings, tells me that Chuck is as rare as I thought. Chuck isn't worth a Mara, or a Bidwill, or even a Kiesling. But to HOF autograph collectors , he is worth a pretty penny. And since I do set up at local shows, I would rather sell them privately, where I can get the price I want, and not have to fork over about 14 % to Ebay.
Got it ....
WANTED:Football Hall of Fame Autograph's;Hugh Ray,Tim Mara,Charles Bidwell,Walt Kiesling,Bill Hewitt,Len Ford,Fritz Pollard,Curly Lambeau,Steve Owen & Joe Carr. FOR SALE : 100's of auto'd HoF 8x10's & dozen's of auto'd HoF cards.
I got the package today and have them sorted out. By my count the following members should have their full submission done. If you could PM me how much return insurance you'd like I can start getting shipping quotes out. If you have items from the submission and would like them returned prior to the other submissions let me know and I can ship them separately too.
Here are my two items. The first is a Guy Chamberlin index card. This officially puts me down to needing 3 autographs to have one autograph of every NFL HOFer.
And a Link Lyman signature as well.

I love how they put my Steve Owen as a trading card instead of a cut. Pretty unique little way to put it, I guess. I can't wait to see that thing in the slab. I bet it looks quite nice.
Plus, now I will have an extra Steve Owen that I can move.

Before now, every custom (whether designed like yours, or built into an actual card) I had sent in had come back labeled as cut. It is odd that this time, they all are defined as Trading Card.
Looking to have some custom cuts or plain custom cards built? PM me.

I will say (but not disclose who or what members) that there are autos that are well above the $250 threshold that will still be done for the $10 rate. It kind of seems like a lottery game.

--unannounced
--a deviation from past practice
--not based on scarcity/value(see snark RE: Norm Ullman--which can be generally applied..)
--open to future change to some other principle (who is to say that $50 will be the threshold going forward?)

<< <i>But I'm glad they still offer us free encapsulation and looks like they are giving a $5 discount on the $50 fees and a $30 discount on the $75 fees. >>
Absolutely. I don't want to come off as ungrateful. I subbed a bunch because it's one of the best deals around. I will sub in the future if it stays at the $10 price point, for sure. And I will like it! But, I will be careful to review their list and avoid as many landmines as I can.
<< <i>It's random in the sense that PSA picked a principle to apply an upcharge that was:
--unannounced
--a deviation from past practice
--not based on scarcity/value(see snark RE: Norm Ullman--which can be generally applied..)

Only an idiot would have a message board signature.
Twelve for twelve. SOOOOOOO Happy that my FOUR Chuck Such's passed. Will send the other four I have in next submission. Didn't know if they could pass them or not. Glad I got the eight from him before he passed away. Wish I would have gotten more. There is not one Chuck Such on Ebay, even in the COMPLETED Listings. Not ONE of his either !!!!!

Rocke
PS.... Chuck passed away February 13th, 2014.
<< <i>Sir Alexander Chapman "Alex" Ferguson, CBE (born 31 December 1941) is a Scottish former football manager and player who managed Manchester United from 1986 to 2013. His time at the club has led to Ferguson being regarded as one of the most successful, admired and respected managers in the history of the game.[4]
He has won many awards and holds many records including winning Manager of the Year most times in British football history. In 2008, he became the third British manager to win the European Cup on more than one occasion. He was knighted in the 1999 Queen's Birthday Honours list, for his services to the game.[5]
On 8 May 2013, Ferguson announced his retirement as manager of Manchester United. During his 26 years at the club, he won 38 trophies, including 13 Premier League and two UEFA Champions League titles.[6] >>

<< <i>The top items up through my Pete Rozelle cut should be in regular sized holders. Everything below that is tall boys. It's just the way the spacing submission size wise turned out. >>
I hope that's not the case, cause these two are normal cards.

<< <i>Chuck Such Id recommend making a wikipedia page for him before selling if you go the ebay route, Bingamen from what I've seen is in the 100-200 dollar range, not bad if you got it on the cheap! >>
I have zero intention of going Ebay route for Chuck. I only have four available, I know nobody else has one, they will just be something I have on my table at shows for Jane, or HOF weekend. Probably the same for Bingaman.

PMKAY..... I don't know you, I have never seen you post before. To the best of my knowledge, you have NEVER posted in the Football HOF autograph thread. I am guessing that you are a novice when it comes to autographs.
Got it ....
