Some grades. 10 day "Express" submission, popped on day 12. I mean, I don't really know what to say. By the time this was in the home stretch, I was about to pull my hair out from the waiting (the group sub going long wasn't helping...), but I couldn't really hope for grades better than these....

VERY GOOD 3 1957 Parkhurst 4 Henri Richard PSA/DNA Certified - Expo purchase, TTM. I was expecting a 2. Thought 1.5 - 2.5 was the range. I'll take it. Pop 2, none higher.

VERY GOOD-EXCELLENT 4 1957 Parkhurst 17 Frank Mahovlich PSA/DNA Certified - PSA 4 crackout, signed at the Expo. Pop 1, none higher

EXCELLENT 5 1951 Parkhurst 56 Ted Lindsay PSA/DNA Certified - Signed at DC Sports this Spring. 2nd sub on this particular card. Was a PSA 5 crackout, then was graded "auth". Now in it's rightful home. Pop 1, none higher.

EXCELLENT-MINT 6 1951 Parkhurst 55 Red Kelly PSA/DNA Certified - PSA 5 crackout, signed at the Expo. One of those magical cards where the grade goes UP. Pop 1, none higher.

EXCELLENT 5 1954 Parkhurst 65 Johnny Bower Lucky Premium Back PSA/DNA Certified - PSA 5 crackout, signed at the Expo. Pop 1, none higher.

Always nice when there's not a single disappointing grade on a sub. Congrats!

    Thanks, Dan.

Since it is getting close to the halfway point of the year, I thought that it would be wise to look back on my collecting goals for the year and take stock of where I stand. I set these in January and felt pretty good about the focus and direction of what I have been doing.

    1. Complete 1961 Parkhurst hockey set in PSA 9 or better

I need 6 more cards to make the goal. Well, I am not off to a good start, though not for lack of effort. There have been very few cards available to upgrade at all. My normal sources and PWCC have basically run dry and I haven't seen a single 9 of 5 of the 6 needed cards. The one card that has come up is a Dave Keon 9, which is a HOF RC and one of the pricier remaining, and I haven't been able to justify the expense for the (non-?) upgrade over my very, very nice current 8.5. I will buy a 9 someday, but want a really nice card for the grade, not just a label. I did mange to upgrade a 9 to a 10 in February and that has been my only progress this year.

    Grade - D-minus

    2. Get nearly all of my autographed card collection into holders

Since I started collecting signed cards, they've piled up. Whether you're going to keep or sell, they're better off in PSA/DNA holders. The resale is better and they look better and are more secure when encapsulated. So, I wanted to clean up my collection and get a bunch of stuff PSA/DNAed.

I feel pretty good about how I've done. Through a combination of personal subs, the blue flip group sub on this board, the red flip group sub on this board, and monthly group subs on other boards, I have submitted 231 cards in 2015. No, I don't really want to do the math on how much I've spent on that! The good news is that did make a really substantial dent into what I had and I have cleared up and cleaned up the pile of autos that I had accumulated.

    Grade - A-minus

    3. Consolidate my collection, selling pieces that are not central to my focus and reinvest that money in more meaningful items

I was not so great with this during the first few months of the year and didn't sell much. During the spring, though, I made it a habit to pull out my boxes and flip through, removing and listing any duplicates, and scrutinizing what I had to make sure that it was actually a meaningful item to keep.

OK, I am not really thinning down very much. But, I did "let go" of a few dozen cards that I plausibly could have otherwise kept, out of concern for space and budget. I consider that progress. I think I do an OK job of focus (Red Wings autos, select Red Wings cards, HOF signed rookies, 61 Parkhurst, signed 61 Parkhurst, few others) to begin, which helps. I plan to circle back to this toward the end of the year and make another effort.

    Grade - B

Casey - if you have anything you need to downsize you collection that fits in my HOF RC set let me know. We could do a deal off Ebay.

    http://www.psacard.com/PSASetRegistry/MySetRegistry/MyCollection.aspx?c=141395

Also there is a Lafleur signing in Players Choice in Kelowna this weekend, cheap 25 bucks an item. Should have let you know earlier, probably not enough time to get something over there. I forgot to send over my RC for ink.

Couple back from a private signing. This one took place in Russia, via a company that specializes in getting the old Soviet players.

2 of Sergei Makarov, who really ought be in the HOF based on his entire body of work. He was good in the NHL but, like many, came over later in his career and so his excellence is not reflected fully in his NHL accomplishments.

Love the 79 Panini, those 70s Paninis are really growing on me. Hopefully PSA will slab it with the diamond cut, near perfect centering otherwise.

Yeah, not sure about the MC Makarov. I bought it raw as there was only a short time before the signing and eBay is not exactly brimming with selection on some of the 70s Euro stuff. It looks a lot more square at real life size than in the scan, but I could easily see PSA saying no. Might take a few tries. Oh well, only one way to find out! If not, the 90 UD is the Registry card, so it's not the end of the world.

Few more grades from a batch I sent in May. Regular 20-day PSA/DNA with card grading service. Popped on day 19. Took 43 actual days from when they were mailed until I received the grades. No real comment on that; just interesting to note.

I am most happy with the Oates. Not an incredibly valuable card, but any pre-90 auto'd card in Mint is quite tough!

Ever have a card that's either a 6 or a 9? That's the Gilmour, which swings depending on how you view a portion of the rough-cut edge--factory or damage. Oh well, I got a 9 in John's sub, so it was a sell regardless. Wish the Stamkos was a 9, but happy on all other grades relative to expectation, so I'll take it!

    This batch had:

    -- 2 upgrades (Oates from a Topps 9 to a OPC 9 and Hawerchuck from a 7 to 9).

-- 3 new cards for the set: Nieuwendyk, McDonald, and Potvin

-- 3 cards of future but likely HOFers: Lundqvist, Stamkos, Thornton

The Gilmour and one of the 2 Potvins will be for sale when they're back in hand.

Great looking signature on the Leetch! Love the triple auto and Howe!
  • Options
Thanks, guys! We will see how the Leetch grades. They are so, so tough with the blue borders, especially when being signed, as any little ding shows and they have to be handled as part of the process. Leetch isn't a cheap signer, so this is probably getting close to my last attempt at a reasonable example. If it doesn't get an 8+, oh well, I will just have to live with it.

I did manage to make some progress on the regular 1961 Parkhurst graded set! An upgrade was available in the Mile High Auction that ended last night and I woke up this morning to the good news that I snagged it at a decent price. The #49 Jacques Plante is a relatively tough card to find in high grade, not only because he is a star and HOFer, but the card also seems especially prone to centering issues. This card isn't perfect in that regard, but is quite nice T/B and reasonable otherwise, and it has a few other attributes that are desirable: sharp corners and a black box near the name that is unaffected by wear or fading.

This brings me down to 5 remaining cards to complete the set in PSA 9+:
    #2 Frank Mahovlich
    #5 Dave Keon
    #8 Bob Pulford
    #9 Red Kelly
    #20 Gordie Howe

The Pulford and Kelly should not be very expensive to upgrade - it is more a matter of availability. Haven't seen a decent 9 of either since I started working on the set. The other 3 are trickier; a combination of scarcity and price... Always on the hunt, though.

Poppage today. Unexpected, as my sub was on day 6 of 20. I was really surprised because, while I have had my fair share of quick results in the past, I have NEVER had a PSA/DNA order go less than essentially the full shot clock. PSA has definitely built up some karma with this one.

Grades ... mixed. This is my first sub in the last half dozen where I felt some were a bit tough. A few nice surprises in there to balance it out, but I do wish that I could have scored maybe 1 graded higher in the aggregate.

VERY GOOD-EXCELLENT 4 1955 Parkhurst 18 Dick Duff PSA/DNA Certified -- Well, I now have 3 of these, all PSA 4. Anyone interested?? LOL

NEAR MINT-MINT 8 1982 O-Pee-Chee 307 Joe Mullen PSA/DNA Certified -- This was the biggest bummer. The card is posted earlier in the thread. It was a PSA 9 crack-out that, in my opinion, definitely deserves the higher grade. I'll have to see it when it is back in hand, but I have been considering using some of my CC renewal for reviews and this might get added to that pile.

MINT 9 2007 Upper Deck 210 Patrick Kane PSA/DNA Certified -- Always want 10s, but this is fair. Thought it may be an 8.

GEM MINT 10 2014 Upper Deck 225 Aaron Ekblad PSA/DNA Certified -- Pulled this myself from *retail*. He's got a long way to go before he's anywhere near approaching "future HOFer" status, but looks like he has all the chops.

GEM MINT 10 1990 Score Canadian 440 Eric Lindros Future Superstar PSA/DNA Certified -- My favorite result from the bunch. TOUGH with the colored borders. He's also very likely to make the HOF in the 2016 class.

NEAR MINT 7 1989 Topps 113 Joe Sakic PSA/DNA Certified -- Blah. Marginal upgrade over my current PSA 7 Topps card.

MINT 9 1984 O-Pee-Chee 327 Cam Neely PSA/DNA Certified -- 2nd favorite result. This was a PSA 8.5 crackout with a nice looking auto done @ Fanatics Boston. Pop 1, none higher, out of 12 graded.

NEAR MINT 7 1985 Topps 9 Mario Lemieux PSA/DNA Certified -- Nice. I posted earlier that I predicted a 6 or possibly 7, so I'll take the higher end of the range. I am around $100 all-in to this card, so feeling pretty good.

EXCELLENT-MINT 6 1997 Collector's Choice 282 Geraldine Heaney PSA/DNA Certified Fine. Just looking to get one of these graded.

Thought that today would be slow - but was pleasantly surprised to get a few cards back.

1965 Topps Ed Giacomin HOF RC - TTM. Beautiful return and upgrade, as my previous card had a spot of paper loss on the back. This was a PSA 7 crackout.
1981 OPC Dino Ciccarelli HOF RC - public signing @ Chantilly. Looking to upgrade.
1976 OPC Bryan Trottier HOF RC - public signing @ Chantilly. Also looking to upgrade. Would take it if graded equal to my current card, as the other is signed in red. PSA 8 crackout.

I also sent in a high grade Topps Trottier RC, which turned out nicely, and another Dino RC through CSA shows directly. The 2nd Dino isn't back yet, but when it comes, I'll sort through what I've got an maybe piece together another small PSA submission for August.

Missed the Clarke, that is a great looking card. Wouldn't look bad in a 8 slab, was it a 7 crackout?
  • Options
Thanks, guys. The Clarke was an 8. I am hoping that it achieves that grade again, but wouldn't be devastated by a 7. As you know, that card is tough to find centered and without tilt, and I didn't have the luxury of time to shop around extensively during the time between when the signing was announced and items were due in. We'll see. That card exceeds PSA's $100 max for regular PSA/DNA grading service, so it'll have to go in with the higher value stuff at the Express service level. I have a card at a Larry Robinson signing that is also nice that I'm going to wait on receiving before I send the Express batch in. That group will be: Gadsby/Clarke/Giacomin/Robinson.

Soviet great who came to the NHL, like many others, at the tail end of his career. Part of the famous KLM line with Larionov and Makarov. Deceased in 2012 and relatively tough to find.

2 cards back from private signings today. Both were done at Your Sports out of Boston.

2003 UD Young Guns Patrice Bergeron - did this one in silver because it is so dark. Scan looks matte, but it is shiny and pretty nice in person.
2009 UD Young Guns Jamie Benn - yep, that's his PAID signature!

Mail from the tail end of this week.

1974 Topps Red Wings Leaders Mickey Redmond/Marcel Dionne/Bill Hogaboam - all TTM, back from PSA
1991 UD Teemu Selanne RC - future HOFer. This is the legit auto, not the ghost signed version that is common - eBay
1987 OPC Luc Robitaille HOF RC - eBay
1970 Topps Gilbert Perreault HOF RC - TTM. Decided to upgrade and these start to get prohibitively expensive in PSA 6+ with the OPC version, so did Topps

<< <i>NEAR MINT-MINT 8 1982 O-Pee-Chee 307 Joe Mullen PSA/DNA Certified -- This was the biggest bummer. The card is posted earlier in the thread. It was a PSA 9 crack-out that, in my opinion, definitely deserves the higher grade. I'll have to see it when it is back in hand, but I have been considering using some of my CC renewal for reviews and this might get added to that pile. >>

Just got some poppage. It's nice to be validated image Decided to crack and re-sub, instead of review.

    10 1 24508052 MINT 9 1982 O-Pee-Chee 307 Joe Mullen PSA/DNA Certified Card

Here are the other parts of that sub with commentary.

MINT 9 1990 Upper Deck 178 Mark Recchi PSA/DNA Certified
GEM MINT 10 1990 Upper Deck 178 Mark Recchi PSA/DNA Certified
-- these were both TTM. Recchi is a sporadic signer, so I guess that I was lucky to get a return. Of the HHOF hopefuls for 2016, he's probably got the best case and I consider him a virtual "lock" in what will be a pretty down year. I'll keep the 10 and the 9 will be for sale.

GEM MINT 10 1990 Upper Deck 123 Sergei Makarov PSA/DNA Certified -- posted above, private signing in Russia. It's not easy to find graded copies of this card because the unsigned version is worth so little, so I bought a bunch of raw copies and got the best one done. Happy that a little diligence there paid off. This isn't his earliest card but is the card that PSA will be using for the registry if he makes the Hall.

NEAR MINT-MINT 8 1989 Topps 136 Brian Leetch PSA/DNA Certified -- private signing @ Steiner. Happy here, thought this would be a 7. It is an upgrade both because it is a grade higher than what I had previously and because it is from Topps, which was more scarce in this particular year. As I said before, his autograph isn't cheap and it is going to be a real pain to get one in a 9, so I think I will be standing pat here and keeping this 8 for the forseeable future.

MINT 9 2005 Upper Deck 230 Duncan Keith PSA/DNA Certified
MINT 9 2005 Upper Deck 230 Duncan Keith PSA/DNA Certified
-- both eBay purchases for prices that I couldn't resist. Thought both were on the border of 8/9, so I guess I got the benefit of the doubt. Generally, either PSA/DNA cards are graded a bit soft or I grade my own cards a bit conservatively. I think the former. These two are basically identical, though if I remember correctly one might have a slightly fuller auto. The other will be listed for sale.

MINT 9 1990 O-Pee-Chee Premier 114 Mats Sundin PSA/DNA Certified -- trade w/ CU member luftmich (thanks, Mike!). I thought this card could get a 10 and will certainly live with a 9. I did not previously have a signed version of this card, so it is good to get closer to completion.

NEAR MINT-MINT 8 1981 O-Pee-Chee 148 Larry Murphy PSA/DNA Certified -- crack and resub from the red flip group sub. Originally graded "authentic"; most likely min. size. That happens. The bummer is that, with PSA/DNA cards, you still get charged the fee as they holder them as authentic! I wish I'd have gotten it back in a CS1 with a sticker and been able to keep the fee the first time. Oh well. Glad this turned out well in sub #2.

NEAR MINT-MINT 8 1976 Topps 115 Bryan Trottier PSA/DNA Certified -- public signing @ CSA Shows. Kind of a "back up" card in case the other one failed. It didn't, so it will be FS.

NEAR MINT-MINT 8 1976 O-Pee-Chee 115 Bryan Trottier PSA/DNA Certified -- public signing @ CSA Shows. Tough in the grade. Every card has that point where it jumps into scarcity and the Trottier Rookie seems to really pop between 7 and 8. Happy to get a nice quality card done and to replace my current example which has an OK-not-great signature in Red.

MINT 9 1981 O-Pee-Chee 161 Dino Ciccarelli PSA/DNA Certified -- public signing @ CSA Shows. This was a surprise, as this was my "worse" Dino and I have a better copy in another sub at PSA now. Thought it would be an 8, but I'll take it. I am quite confident that the other will be a 9 as well, so I'll have a choice on my hands between one card that has a slightly nicer autograph + HOF inscription vs a card that I would deem to be a big better.

So much for the post-National backlog/grading slowness. I think if you asked PSA, this was on business day 2.

    EDIT: Scans of the highlights.

I think I may have said this before but this is my favorite thread ever on this site. You are amassing one heck of a collection in a brief period of time. Hats off to you

Thanks, Dave. I know that you have quite the collection going, as well. I'd love to see the highlights some day. I have a regular graded card set that I am still working on and enjoy. The autographs, though, are just so dynamic and difficult that it is easy to become immersed in the project. They're a nightmare for both perfectionists and completionists - but fantastic for someone looking for a project that will be challenging over time. I have few complaints - especially on days like today, after I've been paid a visit by the Grader of Boom. Knock on wood, though, because I have a few cards still at PSA and what they giveth they can also taketh away ....

Really really like the Trottier, the centering is awesome on that card.

In the interests of legitimately documenting the ups and downs of collecting, I present: bad poppage!

VERY GOOD-EXCELLENT 4 1965 Topps 21 Ed Giacomin PSA/DNA Certified --- PSA 7 crackout with no prior reason to believe that it would be worse than a 6

    EXCELLENT-MINT 6 1951 Parkhurst 37 Bill Gadsby PSA/DNA Certified --- SGC 8 crackout that had a range of 6-8 (I'm admittedly bad at grading these 51 Parkies).

NEAR MINT-MINT 8 1970 O-Pee-Chee 195 Bob Clarke PSA/DNA Certified --- OK, this one wasn't bad! image This was a PSA 8 crackout that remained at that grade.

The Clarke is obviously great and I am very, very happy about it. Just a monster card to have signed. In the game of collecting signed rookies, it always feels like you can find high grade cards OR nice autographs but rarely both. This card is the exception and will look great when I get it back.

The Gadsby will stay where it is and I'll live with it.

The Giacomin, man, that's tough. I will inspect when it returns and decide whether I missed something or whether PSA was out to lunch and it should be resubbed.

Glass half full response: congrats on the Clarke! Even as somebody who doesn't collect hockey, I know that card is one of the most iconic of the 1970's, so having an autographed copy with that high a grade is indeed a "monster," like you said. Plus a little birdie told me it's pop 1, none higher image

    Hiya Casey

Geez good news and bad news - kind of a wash.

Best of luck if you decide to resub the Giacomin - not sure how it went from a 7 to a 4!

You've got one hell of a great collection buddy!

Thanks, guys. That's just one of the breaks when you're cracking cards, sending them off to be signed (this one was TTM, but it can happen at signings, too), then sending them back to PSA. Damage happens. It's one of many things that makes high grade autographed cards so tough. That, plus auto issues like smudging, streaking, bad placement can be a bear. On top of all that, you can get a great card and still run into the Grader of Doom and then you're kind of stuck unless you want to pay the PSA/DNA fee again (not fun). This, of course, I also something that I love because it is such a challenge! Oh well.

Still, I thought I would post some of my "downer" results, because we (understandably) usually see people only share their triumphs and hide their disappointments and that tells only part of the story.

I've got a few more things at PSA right now, including an already-overdue CC renewal submission split between some blue-to-red PSA/DNA crossovers and some reviews. Hopefully will have more (and better!) results to share soon....

PSA order was delivered to me this afternoon. Scans below.

After examining the Giacomin, I can see a minor issue on the back that surely is the cause of the grade. Still, I think it got pretty harsh treatment and, even interpreting the "defect" in a strict light, I have a substantial disagreement with the assigned grade. So, I will probably resubmit in my next batch of autos, whenever that is.

    imageimage

Anyone feel that the Gadsby should be graded higher than a 6? Only issue I see is the top-right corner. Interested to hear others' thoughts on this.

Congratulations on the Clarke. I would bet that card is his favorite as it is the only one that is "Bob" instead of "Bobby". He has never liked being called "Bobby".

Some grades from my June monthly special that came in this week. About 1/2 is to keep and the others will be for sale. Did OK. I think I have Prizm down, but batted a little worse than I'd like on the Platinum. This was my first submission of that, so I'll inspect and try to improve.

You did great! A very eagleeyekidish sub!
  • Options
    Thanks, Matt.

The motion to make "eagleeyekidish" an officially recognized adjective for a sick, sick sub is seconded and passes. image

Of course, there should also be a verb, "I eagleeyekided that sub", as well. Lots of potential.
