Oh, I'm sure you have enough cards now to assemble a few complete and mint 1983 topps sets ! Just sell your extras on ebay or on this website.
What an amazing journey you have been on, I have read the entire post, over 2 days, I confess. I recently retired and began playing with my collection again. Not sure what direction it will take me, as I have no interest in the "Modern" day era cards, but has been a wonderful hobby to occupy my time. Getting my first sub ready to submit, so I may have a few, perhaps foolish, questions down the road if someone can direct me to where I should post them. Took 15 of my autograph collection I collected in my youth to PSA in N.J. last week for authentication and slabbing, so the excitement has started. Continued success on your journey.
Back in August, a board member contacted me and said that he had come across a couple of vending cases. They were unsealed, but he opened a few boxes and liked what he saw. He also sent me some scans of some boxes, and they looked good to me as well.
I purchased two boxes for $175 each.
I pulled an OC Boggs and an OC Gwynn this time.
I also pulled the following 8 cards as possible PSA 10's.
That shadow is annoying. Sorry about that. I feel as though I've become more stringent in my standards as it seems PSA has gotten tougher in their grading. I think in the past I would've pulled more from this box but there were several that were on the edge T/B centering wise so I banished them to the ungraded horde.

This project is definitely losing steam with the way things have played out over the last year or so, but I did get some poppage recently. This is from the I Love The 80's Special from the 2nd quarter of 2020. Some key dates: received 6/11/20, loggage 8/3/20, poppage 4/12/21. In some perverse way, I was secretly hoping for a full calendar year for poppage. All things considered, I don't think this was a super crazy wait time. Anyways, super pleased with the results. 17 out of 35 PSA 10s.

If I had to complain, for the non-PSA 10s, that's a lot of PSA 8s as opposed to PSA 9s. Oh well. The Fisk is a nice hit. Always love hitting a PSA 10 on a HOFer. The Cruz is also pretty low pop (9 or 10 I think) and I've found the Wockenfuss to be tough (pop 11). Otherwise, a lot of extremely common commons. I think I had like 6 or 7 Steve Trout's in my grading pile.
I still have two vending boxes that I need to post results of the rips, but I need to find the motivation.

You have an incredible eye for this set. With PSA's stricter grading standards recently, to hit almost 50% 10s is quite the feat. You should be quite pleased. I hope somehow/someway you can continue your quest. It seems like it will be more difficult with price increases both with grading and the product itself. However, It seems like you've been more creative in how you have procured product to make it somewhat cost effective. The grading cost has gotten a bit more difficult with the recent price increase. Your journey has been a lot of fun to watch....I hope it can continue.
Thanks Jeremy. I think at this point, I'm totally shut out of unopened product and even the partial sets and bulk lots that I was grabbing 3 or 4 years ago at what I thought were really good prices are getting steep. What kills me is the grading prices. I hate to spend $10 to grade most of these commons. On the other hand, prices are skyrocketing on PSA 10s. Stars mostly. I was updating my spreadsheet the other day and was shocked to see VCP on a George Brett PSA 10 was almost $300. Pre-pandemic it was like a $50 or $60 card. Maybe I'm naive, but I'm holding out hope that specials geared towards set builders might come back. Even something like that I Love The 80's special would be ideal.

Todd has said, pretty much in so many words, that they would.

With this latest sub, I hit the 80% mark on my set. I have 320 PSA 9's and 314 PSA 10's. The gap between PSA 9's and PSA 10's is narrowing. I think my last sub had about 8 upgrades from 9 to 10. Love that. Something very satisfying about changing that PSA 9 over to a PSA 10 on my spreadsheet.
I've got about 500 cards in my "To Be Graded" pile. Keep in mind that many, many cards there's more than one copy. In some cases as many as 7 copies. I'll have to sit down one of these days and figure out how many cards in the set I haven't found a gradable copy yet. I bet it could be as many as 100.

Just closing the book on my Winter 2020-21 Rips. I opened this box back in March and I'm finally posting the results. This was the 2nd of 2 vending boxes purchased from a board member in August 2020 for $175.
I pulled a decent Sandberg and Gwynn. Not gradable, but perfectly suitable for a nice raw set.
Also pulled the following 13 gradable cards.
I've stated many times how tough the Niekro is. The Flynn, Stewart and Bair are all on the tougher side as well.

Love the Niekro and the Murcer in particular from this flat out elite set. Now do you typically expect about 1-2% of cards from vending to 10?
Good luck with the grades.

That seems about right. You'll always have your strong boxes and weak boxes, but on average 1% to 2% seems pretty accurate.

Still looking for 10's. Who knows if or when I'll be able to send them in, but still looking. I've pretty much given up as far as unopened goes but still look for nice bulk lots. This lot was won on eBay back in May. Listed as the leftovers from a vending case break with all of the stars pulled as well as any really poorly conditioned commons. I won this 3000+ card lot for $13.50. Shipping was almost as much as the winning bid at $26.
With such a lot, the hope is to hit some nice low pops. Unfortunately no such luck. Pulled the following 26 cards as potential 10's. The Niemann and Corrales are pop 12's and there are a couple of pop 13's.
Also pulled 22 cards (not shown) as potential 10's, but since I've already hit 10's on them they've been moved to a different pile. If you notice, there's doubles of 2 or 3 cards shown above. Since the cuts (and location of fish eyes and print defects) are so similar within a case, if you find a potential gem, then there's bound to be another one or more within the lot. I think I pulled about 4 Bob Owchinko's.
I've got another larger lot that I'm debating whether to start sorting through now or waiting until Winter. I'll be sure to post results.

Good to see you are still chipping away Brett. I hope that PSA figures out a way to give someone like you access to a reasonably inexpensive option to grade.
John
Conundrum - Loving my unopened baseball card collection....but really like ripping too
I wish there was something to update. Patiently waiting for PSA to come up with something that's accommodating to the set builder.
I've got a couple of eBay lots to sort through later this Winter. Other than that, just catching up on some sorting of all of the commons. Up to 11 5000 ct boxes now.

Hi there, just wanted to say I thoroughly enjoyed reading this thread just now for the first time.
I've been looking for guidance on something and with all of your searching and submitting for 1983 Topps, I thought you would be a good person to ask. How do you tell the difference between an acceptable "rough cut" and a bad edge? There are so many PSA 10s out there in 80s cards with rough cut edges, but as I look over cards as possible grading candidates, I find I have a hard time identifying the difference between an unobjectionable rough cut and a bad edge. Is there any rule of thumb that you have used?
We were all wondering if you were able to take advantage of the $18 special a month ago? Not that $18 is great relative to what you use to grade them for.
I would be interested in buying PSA 8 or 9 of #51 (Cubs TL), 450 (Simmons), 672 (Kaat), 673 (Kaat SV) if you have any extras.
@mrpeanut39 How is the set coming along? Have you been able to
send any to PSA? Have you been able to find some new lots to search?
For many of us, this is one of our favorite threads. Especially with all
of the effort you are devoting to it. Take care.
I've seen a number of PSA 10 1983 Topps listings with "set break" in the title and wondered if they were Brett's cards. I hope all is well.
Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
MantleFan23 emailed me this weekend and said people were wondering about the progress of my set.
I've popped in on the boards occasionally, but I've pretty much been out of the loop as far as the boards go. Anyway...I'm firmly entrenched on the sidelines with my 83 set. No way I'm submitting at current prices and current standards. Holding out hope that sometime down the road PSA will ease up on both.
Also, personally things are fine. Thanks for the interest in my set and me!

The Sandberg looks pretty sharp. What's keeping it out of the grade pile?
Bottom right corner.
Love the Niekro and the Murcer in particular from this flat out elite set. Now do you typically expect about 1-2% of cards from vending to 10?
Good luck with the grades.
John
That seems about right. You'll always have your strong boxes and weak boxes, but on average 1% to 2% seems pretty accurate.
There is hope. Consider selling your extra PSA 8s and 9s on ebay to raise cash to buy unopened material or partial sets or lots ?
Best of luck, Brett. This is still one of my favorite collecting adventures.

If you ever want to sell NM sets please PM me.
Good to see you are still chipping away Brett. I hope that PSA figures out a way to give someone like you access to a reasonably inexpensive option to grade.

Hey, PSA 10s on common cards at in the $100s on Ebay. You may want to list your extra 10s. Set builders are out there buying.
Bump...because we really want to know the progress of this great quest
I wish there was something to update. Patiently waiting for PSA to come up with something that's accommodating to the set builder.
I've got a couple of eBay lots to sort through later this Winter. Other than that, just catching up on some sorting of all of the commons. Up to 11 5000 ct boxes now.
Thanks for the update. Hope that PSA brings prices down so you can submit. Have really enjoyed watching your quest.
Thank you - I appreciate it very much.
Was this set ever completed? What a great read.
@mrpeanut39 How is the set coming along? Have you been able to
send any to PSA? Have you been able to find some new lots to search?
For many of us, this is one of our favorite threads. Especially with all
of the effort you are devoting to it. Take care.
Hope your okay Mr. Peanut. Absolute legendary thread. Epic.
Does anyone happen to have a 1983 Topps Bob Grich #790 PSA 9?
I don’t blame you. Tough to set build in today’s market environment given submission costs.
Thanks for checking in. Glad you haven’t sold off - hopefully conditions change and it is just a break on your journey to complete the most bad-ass ‘83 set in history.
Special shout out to Mrpeanut39/Brett for offering me a Grich PSA 8.5 free of charge. He is what collecting is all about. Thanks again Brett.
Seems like one of my very favorite threads of all time is run by a total class act - no surprise there.

An excuse to keyword spam the word "set". Nothing more.

Wow, he's certainly not a mean one, Mr Grich! And an extra thankies to everyone here who's sent me freebies over the years (especially the most recent one who got me an amazing group of mint sets), which for someone like myself with a very minimal budget is especially helpful!!
