Thanks for the positive words guys.

The Michigan Wax lot was pretty uninspiring. I purchased the lot of 11 packs in June for $48 w/shipping. The fear with a lot such as this is that you're getting the leftovers from a box where either the big hits have already been accounted for or you have a run of OC packs.

I didn't hit any of The Big Three, but the card quality wasn't outrageously bad. Some rough cuts, some printing issues and below average centering. I ended up with the following 2 cards added to the grading pile.

The Walling is probably centered too low, but it's a low pop (I believe it was the last card in the set to finally receive a PSA 10) so I'll send it in as a lottery ticket. I also pulled 3 or 4 commons that I already hit 10's on but I'm not grading them.

I'm going to bust the two vending boxes next.

Nice job on your set! I too love the '83's - my favorite set of the 80's by a long shot. I wish you well as you continue to build your set. Very impressive so far!

Awesome progress. Too bad for the poor showing in the MI wax. I've grown to be fond of the 83 cards. I love the dual photos on each card. Plus, it is Yaz's last base card issue...and it produced the well-known HOF RC trifecta of cards.

Nice smattering of 10s in that group--12 out of 40 PSA 10s for 30-year old cards, very nice!

Man, that was quick poppage! Loggage usually takes longer, LOL!

    Echo this...well done! Nice 10s

Brett , in my humble opinion the top corners on the Walling might keep it out of a " 10 " container .

You're probably right. I was feeling like I had to salvage something from this lot. I try not to let that happen, but sometimes it
    does.

Busted 2 vending boxes. Looking back, I see that I haven't busted any vending since 2013. iirc, a couple of dud boxes turned me against vending. I'm happy to say that I'm back in the pro-vending camp.

This first box was purchased off of eBay in April for $75. What I liked about this box (it applied to the 2nd box as well) was that it wasn't stuffed to the gills. I've noticed with other vending I've opened is that sometimes the box is overstuffed causing cards on either end to be warped so bad that they're not salvageable. Probably effects 20-25 cards on either end. Also, both boxes were apparently taken good care of as corner dings were minimal.

I pulled 10 gradable cards from this box with the highlights pictured below.

In addition to the really nice Sandberg, I also pulled an OC Boggs so I'm satisfied it was an unsearched box.

The 2nd box was an eBay purchase in October for $72. Not any star power to speak of(there were 2 OC Gwynn's and an OC Sandberg), but I pulled 26 gradable cards from this box with some low/relatively low pops represented. The Walling and Langford are particularly tough.

If the scans look funny, it's because the cards still have the vending curl even in the penny sleeves.

Next up will be my selection of rack packs.

Next up is 28 rack packs. These were purchased via eBay throughout the year in various sized lots as small as 2 packs to as large as 12 packs. In addition to the purchased lots, I was also humbled to be gifted 5 rack packs from a board member (thanks again Eric).

My average price per rack was $9.31. If you omit the freebies, I paid an average of $11.34 per rack.

Not a very good pic, but there is a Ripken on top pack. There were also packs with the likes of Winfield, Rice, Carlton, etc. showing, but no signs of the Big 3. However, there were 3 Gwynn's, 2 Sandberg's and 2 Boggs' contained within including this gradable Gwynn.

Overall the rip had a bad feel mainly due to the fact that the big lot of 12 packs had a run of bad tilts, something I've not seen a lot of in the 83's. When all was said and done, I pulled 26 cards to be graded.

On deck is the cello box.

That Gwynn looks like a GEM to the naked eye. Good luck on that one.
Do you notice any collating/dispersion patterns when you are opening? In other words does Player B always seem to follow Player A in a pack?

Thanks all. I've learned not to get too excited when I pull a nice example of one of the Big 3. I know the claim is that the bigger cards are not judged more harshly than run of the mill commons, but I'm not so sure that's the case. While I do agree that this Gwynn (the Sandberg from vending is not too shabby either) is really nice, I'll send it in and expect a 9 and hope for a 10.

VaRedsFan-There definitely is a pattern. But it doesn't seem to be 100% foolproof. I think it depends on where the break of the sequence occurs in the pack. With all of the product I open, it would probably be worth it to pay more attention to the sequences. I know there are others on the board who know a lot more about sequencing than I do.

This was from the January Special. Logged 2/10. Popped last night. I didn't meet my 28% PSA 10 hit rate, but there were no head scratcher grades (no PSA 4's or PSA 7's), plus I hit my 2nd PSA 10 Sandberg. The Sandberg came from my vending rip this year(pictured above) and both of my PSA 10 Sandberg's have come from vending. Disappointingly, my Gwynn from this years rack pull didn't hit a 10. I've sent in 7 Gwynn's and have 3 PSA 8's, a PSA 8.5 and 3 PSA 9's to show for it. I'll post scans when I get my order back from PSA.

Just to wrap this up, (my lack of enthusiasm to post is a clue to how these breaks went) I'll combine these last two boxes into this one post.

I purchased this cello box from a board member back in July for $250. Simply put, a lot of OC cards. I believe there was one Boggs and one Sandberg. I pulled 7 cards for grading with a sampling scanned below.

The last box I ripped was a wax box purchased during the BBCE Black Friday Sale for $248. A bit disappointed in the shape of the box, as one corner of the box was scotch-taped together. So hardly FASC. The quality of the cards was a little better than the cello box, but still not great. I pulled one OC Gwynn and one OC Sandberg. I set aside 12 cards for grading. A little star power with a nice Rose and there was a chance at some low pop hits with the Giles (pop 2), LaFrancois (pop 5) and Werner (pop 8).

Interesting to note that these two boxes were the only BBCE certified material this year and may have produced the worst quality cards. Something for me to ponder for 2017.

This project has hit a roadblock. Since the PSA monthly specials have all but disappeared, I've not subbed anything since the January 2017 special. $7 per card is about my limit but I can't afford the 100 minimum to get that bulk pricing. So if anybody out there needs somebody to supply 25-35 cards to hit the 100 minimum on a bulk submission, shoot me a PM.

However, I did pick up some stuff for my Winter rips.

That's a rack box, a vending box and a lot of six rack packs. The random rack packs are up this week.

    Hiya Brett

Looking forward to your rips and subs.

I ripped some vending a long time ago - got unlucky with the centering.

I did sub a nice Ryno that got a 9 but 10 is where it's at with that card IMO.

    Very entertaining thread.

    Thanks for the encouragement guys.

Mike, I think vending gets somewhat of a bad rap. Both of the PSA 10 Sandberg's I hit came from vending. It's true that if a box wasn't stored properly or you get a bad box vending can be truly awful, but that can go for any type of unopened.

When I first started this set I recall BBCE would put 83 vending on special for $50 per box. The bang for your buck was unmatched. Those days are long gone and I think the 83 vending is a bit overpriced nowadays, but my set has a ton of self submitted 10's from vending.

    I agree Brett.

I'd still buy vending. I was one that bought when it was cheap - something like 50 -60 per box?

Steve did take 2 boxes back and give me 2 from another case - I guess many are of the belief that a whole case can be bad?

When I decide to open an entire case?

I'll be sure to let everyone know how it goes.

First up is a lot of 6 rack packs purchased off of eBay in June for $70.

I pulled one each of the Sandberg and Boggs rookies. The Sandberg was OC and the Boggs was not too bad centering wise but every card in that cell had a dinged upper left corner. The Boggs also had a noticeable wrinkle.

I ended up pulling 17 cards to add to my grading pile with a sample posted below. Note that the scans may look a little skewed because the cards have a slight curl even in the penny sleeves.

The Herzog is a beast, so I have high hopes for that one.

Also, I re-upped my membership a year ago at this time thinking I'd send my 6 freebies in at some point in the year along with a monthly special. But since the specials have stunk all year, I'm just now getting around to sending my renewal sub in. This week I sent in 5 Gwynn PSA 9's and a Boggs PSA 9 for review. Fingers crossed.

Looking to bust the vending box this week.

I did list an 82 and 83 box, the 82 already sold. I got the 83 box probably 10+ years ago from Marchant Cards... so wouldn't say it wasn't assembled, but definitely legit. It did come with the pack with Sandberg showing and I would totally vouch for Paul, everything I have bought from him has been 100%.

Next up is a vending box purchased from BBCE during their Black Friday sale. $134 after the 10% discount. Considering vending's reputation for being so hit or miss, I think that's a tad steep. But I'm a big BBCE fan, so happy to give them my business.

Always a beautiful sight to see that untouched vending pattern.

Once again I pulled a Boggs and a Sandberg. The Boggs just missed being gradable as it's off just enough l/r and t/b to not make the grading pile.

Ended up with 25 cards to add to the grading pile with some of them shown below.

I'll finish my Winter rips with the rack box this week.

Vending gets a bad rap but if you can get a box that hasn't been dinged, you can make out pretty well if centering cooperates.

    Great stuff, as always, Brett!

Last break of the year. I purchased this rack box off of eBay back in July for $350. The seller stated it was from an unopened 6 box case and had pictures of the box and auctioned off all 6 boxes over a 2 or 3 month period. I bid on 4 of the boxes, but this is the only one I was able to win.

Overall the box was a disappointment as the centering was pretty bad. I pulled an OC Boggs and Gwynn.

I also pulled a Gwynn and Boggs that I added to the grading pile.

I'm not crazy about either one. The Gwynn is not as centered as well as I like and it looks like it may be tilted, and the Boggs has that white fleck on it below his chin. It's almost like a tiny divot. At this point I'm going to send it in as more of an experiment than anything. It is really nice otherwise.

I was only able to pull 21 cards for grading with a sample shown below.

The Walling is very tough as I've mentioned a number of times in this thread and the Tekulve is fairly tough.

While digging through the box and finding OC stuff everywhere, I kept hoping the centering would change over the last half of the box. No such luck. Then I was hoping the last quarter of the box would be better. Nope. But when I got to the last row of the box, this guy was staring back at me.

I don't collect unopened. If anybody's interested, I wouldn't mind recouping a bit on the cost of the box.

There is for sure a guy on the boards that is looking for that! He has made several posts. I've sold him a couple of Sandberg top packs!

I did see that guy on the BST. I thought he was only looking for cellos. Maybe I'll shoot him a PM.

I have been following this story for years now and I really enjoy, just glad I don’t have to pay for it all :). It’s a lot of fun to keep up with!

@rhynoguy2018 may be interested in the rak!

This was my CC renewal sub. All reviews. It looks like that Gwynn (along with the Boggs below it) was originally graded with my CC renewal in April 2016. Still looking to hit a PSA 10 Boggs.

For those interested, this sub was delivered 1/17. Logged 1/27. Popped today.
