Here's what I've accumulated this year for Winter ripping.
Two Michigan Wax boxes, one rack box, one cello box and 9 rack packs.
I'm going to start with the loose rack packs tomorrow. I'll update the thread with results.

First up is nine rack packs purchased in late February-early March in two different lots of 4 and 5 with an average price of $11.22 per rack.
A couple of points of interest for all those lovers of minutiae around here. Two of the racks had Toys R Us price tags and one had a Target price tag. As you can see, Toys R Us had the better deal.
Also, one of the racks had a cardboard header and a crimper was used to seal between the cells of the rack pack. Also there was a 1982 Topps copyright on the header. I guess Topps was just using leftover inventory. I'm not much of an unopened guy, so no idea how prevalent these are, but this is the first one of these I've ever opened.
I wasn't expecting to hit any of the Big 3 with these, as I suspect the sequencing gurus would've passed these over. I did pull a nice Schmidt and a handful of nice commons to add to my pile to be graded.
The Turner, Pacella and Kison have nice OPC rough cuts. Hope I'm not dinged for that.
One of the Michigan Wax boxes is on deck. I'll probably bust it next week.

The 83 racks with the cardboard header cards are tougher to find and were the last of those before Topps switched over completely to soft plastic headers in 1984.
Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.

Next up is a Michigan Wax box purchased from BBCE back in February for $250 as part of the group break.
Even though they're not gradable, it's still fun to pull key cards from the set.
However, it's even more fun to pull key cards from the set that are gradable.
t/b centering is probably off enough to keep it a 9, but I think it's worth a shot to send it in.
I also pulled the following commons/stars.
The Eck is one of (if not) the hardest HOFers to get a 10. Also the Grich (pop. 1) and the Bernazard (pop. 2) were also nice pulls. In addition to the two mentioned there's also 10 cards pictured above that are tough to moderately tough (pop. 4 to pop. 9).
Really happy with this box and am anxious to break the other Michigan Wax box as it's from the same case.

This Michigan Wax box was purchased from a board member for $250 in October. Since it was from the same BBCE case as the first Mich. Wax box I busted recently, I hoped it may be as nice as the first one.
Unfortunately it was not as strong. Pulled this OC Sandberg. No Gwynn. No Boggs.
In general, many of the cards were like this Sandberg, well centered L/R but OC T/B. I did pull the following cards. The highlights were another nice Bernazard (pop. 2) and a pretty nice Armas RB (pop. 3) marred by a pretty conspicuous fisheye. Also a nice Rickey and a nice Palmer.

This cello box was purchased from a board member in August for $250.
This is the fourth cello box I've busted, and I'm averaging about 42 gradable cards per box. I'm sure it depends on how the box was stored, but I've yet to have a cello box that was plagued with gum stains. I can't say the same for standard wax. Unless the price is right, going forward I think I'm only going to break Cello, Mich Wax or Rack.
I pulled one of each of the Big 3. None were gradable.
Here are the 40 cards I pulled for grading. HOFers Fingers, Yount, Reggie and Seaver. The promising low pops include Petry (pop. 1) and another Armas RB (pop. 3).
The Rack Box, the last box of this year's stash is on deck.

Last up is this Rack Box purchased from a board member in April for $325.
Pretty lackluster finish to the ripping. The middle pocket of every rack was consistently OC. I didn't pull a single card from the middle pocket. Also, collation wasn't very good either as I pulled four each of many, many cards. Unfortunately, none of the foursomes were of the Big Three. In fact, I didn't pull any of the Big Three in this box.
I pulled the following 26 cards to be graded. The HOFers are LaRussa x2, Yount, Niekro and Seaver. Nothing very low pop. of note.
I'm most excited about the Niekro. I can't believe that there have been nine PSA 10s graded. I have over 25 raw Niekro's and due to atrocious centering none would grade above an NQ 8. This one has a couple of tiny fish eyes, so anything above a PSA 9 would be a surprise.
My first rip of the year, the 9 loose racks produced 20 cards and this box of 24 racks produced only 26 cards. Definitely a disappointment.

Tough break on that 83 rack box. I have just one 83 rack box in my collection, which pretty much ends at 1983. I believe there are a couple star packs in the box, including one with one of the key rookies on back or front, but I haven't looked through it in a long while.

Even though the big 3 might not come back as 10's, you could still get 9's from a couple, and even the 8's would be worth sending in if just to flip to buy more boxes.
Cool thread thank you for sharing with us. I know this is crazy but I have always liked the Rich Gedman in this set. When I was a kid I grow up with Gedman he was and still is good people. I collect his cards every chance I get. The 83 topps set is just awesome.
My November sub finally popped. Maybe the 66s and 71s delayed poppage a bit. I usually get pretty fast poppage when submitting the 83s only.
I have a PSA 8+ 1966 set on the registry. I pulled these 66s from a partial raw set that I've had for years. I've previously pulled a couple of 9s, a handful of 8.5s and a slew of 8s. This is actually the 3rd time I've picked through it looking for PSA 8s and above. My main goal was to try to get that Perranoski into a 7 slab. It's a low pop, SP high number. I threw the Daddy Wags and Oyler in because they looked pretty good. Just goes to show that your perspective changes depending when you look over the cards. The same would apply to the pros as well I imagine. What's an 8 today could be a 7 tomorrow.
I have a new found respect for 71s. I had these 71s set aside as what I thought were the nicest from my raw set. I thought for sure I would get a PSA 8 or two. This set must be insanely hard in PSA 8 and above.
I've subbed about 600 1983 Topps and I'm hitting 27% PSA 10s. I only hit 8 of 50 with this sub, so kind of a disappointment. The Terry Bulling is now a pop 7 and the Andre Robertson and Bobby Brown are now pop 8s. Semi low pops. It was nice to hit the Jr. in a 10. Otherwise a preponderance of PSA 9s. I'll be sure to post some scans when I get them back.

Notice that oil splotch (sugar stain?) on the top right edge of the Brown. Kind of unsightly. Also, scans really highlight flaws. Centering isn't as good as when you're just eyeballing them.
Here's a look at that Ripken in it's raw state posted on this thread from last years break. fwiw, that Rickey ended up in a PSA 9 holder. I suspect t/b centering held it back.

Right now I would say no. My main goal is to finish the set in PSA 9 & 10 completely with my own subs. Having said that, if and when I do finish, I may try to upgrade my 9s to 10s if the price is right. I try not to look at PSA 10s on eBay too often to avoid temptation, but when I do, I'm amazed how cheaply what I consider tough cards are going for. So I'll never say never.

That's the beauty of pursuing an entire set like this, the Jerry Ujdurs Bobby Browns are just as key as the Cal Ripkens. By the way, love the Mariners uniform on the Bobby Brown card.

Good luck with the set it looks like you are off to a good start. i know it's a labor of love, because I have played the rip and submit game with 85 Topps. I ended up eventually selling all my 9's and 10's at a time when you could get good money for Clemens and McGwire, but I was left with several monster boxes of 85 Topps with multiple players. If I looked through the boxes I could probably still pull out several 10's.
The 80's Topps sets are monsters to build anyway, but putting together one graded takes a special commitment that I didn't have at the time. So, good luck and keep posting pics of those beautiful gem mint 83's.
Great set. 1982, 1983 and 1984 were the years I really got heavy into baseball and baseball cards. I always loved the All-Star cards and the league leaders. Great stuff. I'd love to bust open a box or two with you. Hell, I'd pay you something just to open them and look at the cards. Then you could keep 'em!
I also loved the Topps Sticker Books. Those were so much fun to open and trade. I have my books somewhere in the basement, but they are in rough shape. I wouldn't want it any other way.

Wow! That's unreal! If you have any unwanted yankees and Orioles, Lmk. I am looking to put together team sets from that year since that was the first yankee game I ever saw. They don't have to be graded, just nice for my viewing pleasure
Here's the results from my April Sub. Like others recently, quick poppage. Also, more in line with my 26 % average as I hit 12 of 50 PSA 10s. The Gwynn which is shown in my 12/14 post was just not quite strong enough for a 10 as I figured. I'm a little disappointed that I didn't hit on any of the low pops I subbed. I thought the Petry, Grich, Eckersley, Norman, Pettini and Armas Record Breaker all had shots. Unfortunately they all were graded PSA 9s. The Yount was a nice hit and the Pacella is a pop 5 and the checklist is a pop 6.
I always seem to get a smattering of 8s and the Butler PSA 5 can be explained away by a surface wrinkle I guess. I've even received a handful of PSA 6s over the years as these are due to surface wrinkles on the back of the card I've heard. The real mystery is the PSA 7. I've subbed over 600 1983 cards now and this is just the 2nd PSA 7 I've received. I'll have to look at it when I get them back.

Agreed! Always interesting to learn "the source" for the card and nothing quite as exhilarating as self-submitting a raw card from a pack that grades PSA 10! Congrats!

I have always been tempted to embark on a project Like the 81 or 83 Topps set to rip and sub myself..... What always stopped me was thinking about the thousands of dollars Involved and the thinking that I could buy Older complete sets for the money. Of course to some Money is no object. Love this thread though!
Such a great thread here, especially for a novice like me. I didn't collect baseball cards in 83, that would come a few years later. But like many, this set is my favorite of the 80's, with 1983 being an overall favorite target year in any issue for my unopened collection. I can't even imagine the sheer enormity of a self subbed set of this size. Must be a labor of love and a great ride as you tear through some serious quantity of product of such an iconic 80s set. As many have already said, I really enjoy the details around sourcing of your pulls. Hope that I can carve out the time and budget at some point in future for such an endeavor.

Two Michigan Wax boxes, one rack box, one cello box and 9 rack packs.
I'm going to start with the loose rack packs tomorrow. I'll update the thread with results.
A couple of points of interest for all those lovers of minutiae around here. Two of the racks had Toys R Us price tags and one had a Target price tag. As you can see, Toys R Us had the better deal.
Also, one of the racks had a cardboard header and a crimper was used to seal between the cells of the rack pack. Also there was a 1982 Topps copyright on the header. I guess Topps was just using leftover inventory. I'm not much of an unopened guy, so no idea how prevalent these are, but this is the first one of these I've ever opened.
I wasn't expecting to hit any of the Big 3 with these, as I suspect the sequencing gurus would've passed these over. I did pull a nice Schmidt and a handful of nice commons to add to my pile to be graded.
The Turner, Pacella and Kison have nice OPC rough cuts. Hope I'm not dinged for that.

Thanks Tim. Any thoughts of starting an 83 set? I know you have several graded 70s sets that you're building.
Even though they're not gradable, it's still fun to pull key cards from the set.
However, it's even more fun to pull key cards from the set that are gradable.
t/b centering is probably off enough to keep it a 9, but I think it's worth a shot to send it in.
I also pulled the following commons/stars.
The Eck is one of (if not) the hardest HOFers to get a 10. Also the Grich (pop. 1) and the Bernazard (pop. 2) were also nice pulls. In addition to the two mentioned there's also 10 cards pictured above that are tough to moderately tough (pop. 4 to pop. 9).
Really happy with this box and am anxious to break the other Michigan Wax box as it's from the same case.

Unfortunately it was not as strong. Pulled this OC Sandberg. No Gwynn. No Boggs.
In general, many of the cards were like this Sandberg, well centered L/R but OC T/B. I did pull the following cards. The highlights were another nice Bernazard (pop. 2) and a pretty nice Armas RB (pop. 3) marred by a pretty conspicuous fisheye. Also a nice Rickey and a nice Palmer.
This is the fourth cello box I've busted, and I'm averaging about 42 gradable cards per box. I'm sure it depends on how the box was stored, but I've yet to have a cello box that was plagued with gum stains. I can't say the same for standard wax. Unless the price is right, going forward I think I'm only going to break Cello, Mich Wax or Rack.
I pulled one of each of the Big 3. None were gradable.
Here are the 40 cards I pulled for grading. HOFers Fingers, Yount, Reggie and Seaver. The promising low pops include Petry (pop. 1) and another Armas RB (pop. 3).
The Rack Box, the last box of this year's stash is on deck.
Last up is this Rack Box purchased from a board member in April for $325.
Pretty lackluster finish to the ripping. The middle pocket of every rack was consistently OC. I didn't pull a single card from the middle pocket. Also, collation wasn't very good either as I pulled four each of many, many cards. Unfortunately, none of the foursomes were of the Big Three. In fact, I didn't pull any of the Big Three in this box.
I pulled the following 26 cards to be graded. The HOFers are LaRussa x2, Yount, Niekro and Seaver. Nothing very low pop. of note.
I'm most excited about the Niekro. I can't believe that there have been nine PSA 10s graded. I have over 25 raw Niekro's and due to atrocious centering none would grade above an NQ 8. This one has a couple of tiny fish eyes, so anything above a PSA 9 would be a surprise.
My first rip of the year, the 9 loose racks produced 20 cards and this box of 24 racks produced only 26 cards. Definitely a disappointment.
Tough break on that 83 rack box. I have just one 83 rack box in my collection, which pretty much ends at 1983. I believe there are a couple star packs in the box, including one with one of the key rookies on back or front, but I haven't looked through it in a long while.

I have a PSA 8+ 1966 set on the registry. I pulled these 66s from a partial raw set that I've had for years. I've previously pulled a couple of 9s, a handful of 8.5s and a slew of 8s. This is actually the 3rd time I've picked through it looking for PSA 8s and above. My main goal was to try to get that Perranoski into a 7 slab. It's a low pop, SP high number. I threw the Daddy Wags and Oyler in because they looked pretty good. Just goes to show that your perspective changes depending when you look over the cards. The same would apply to the pros as well I imagine. What's an 8 today could be a 7 tomorrow.
I have a new found respect for 71s. I had these 71s set aside as what I thought were the nicest from my raw set. I thought for sure I would get a PSA 8 or two. This set must be insanely hard in PSA 8 and above.
I've subbed about 600 1983 Topps and I'm hitting 27% PSA 10s. I only hit 8 of 50 with this sub, so kind of a disappointment. The Terry Bulling is now a pop 7 and the Andre Robertson and Bobby Brown are now pop 8s. Semi low pops. It was nice to hit the Jr. in a 10. Otherwise a preponderance of PSA 9s. I'll be sure to post some scans when I get them back.

Notice that oil splotch (sugar stain?) on the top right edge of the Brown. Kind of unsightly. Also, scans really highlight flaws. Centering isn't as good as when you're just eyeballing them.
Here's a look at that Ripken in it's raw state posted on this thread from last years break. fwiw, that Rickey ended up in a PSA 9 holder. I suspect t/b centering held it back.

Right now I would say no. My main goal is to finish the set in PSA 9 & 10 completely with my own subs. Having said that, if and when I do finish, I may try to upgrade my 9s to 10s if the price is right. I try not to look at PSA 10s on eBay too often to avoid temptation, but when I do, I'm amazed how cheaply what I consider tough cards are going for. So I'll never say never.

That's the beauty of pursuing an entire set like this, the Jerry Ujdurs Bobby Browns are just as key as the Cal Ripkens. By the way, love the Mariners uniform on the Bobby Brown card.

I've got four monster boxes filled with the rejects. From 15 Luis Tiant's to 37 Dusty Baker's. Including graded cards and cards I've set aside to grade, I've got over 20,000 1983 Topps cards.
The 80's Topps sets are monsters to build anyway, but putting together one graded takes a special commitment that I didn't have at the time. So, good luck and keep posting pics of those beautiful gem mint 83's.
I also loved the Topps Sticker Books. Those were so much fun to open and trade. I have my books somewhere in the basement, but they are in rough shape. I wouldn't want it any other way.

Wow! That's unreal! If you have any unwanted yankees and Orioles, Lmk. I am looking to put together team sets from that year since that was the first yankee game I ever saw. They don't have to be graded, just nice for my viewing pleasure
I always seem to get a smattering of 8s and the Butler PSA 5 can be explained away by a surface wrinkle I guess. I've even received a handful of PSA 6s over the years as these are due to surface wrinkles on the back of the card I've heard. The real mystery is the PSA 7. I've subbed over 600 1983 cards now and this is just the 2nd PSA 7 I've received. I'll have to look at it when I get them back.
