Finally got around to scanning my 10s from my latest sub.
Also, here's a scan of the Gwynn 9.
Initially, I thought the t/b centering would hold me back, but a closer look reveals a nick on the left edge and some print imperfections that most likely did me in as far as a 10 goes.
Finally, I was sort of implying I got hosed on the card that graded PSA 7.
PSA got it right. There's some sort of print defect on the card. You can see it best on his face in the main picture. It looks kind of grainy and yellowish. So instead of the 9 (PQ), I got the straight 7.

Love this thread, Brett! Reminds me of when I started with my 75 mini set back in 2007 before they went to $90 a pack, LOL! For me as a collector, the satisfaction of getting a self-submitted PSA 10 always trumps buying one already graded, even if it is not always the most economical route.
Beautiful cards!

I try not to think about the cost. It's just fun for me. I try to limit myself to purchasing a box of unopened every 3 months or so and I only send in 2 or 3 subs to PSA per year.
Hopefully the price of 83 unopened has plateaued. I remember $50 vending and $150 wax boxes.

Eighteen 10s out of 50. Pretty happy.
In addition to HOFers Palmer and LaRussa, the better hits were: Beattie now a Pop 9, Jose Cruz Pop 7, Kern Pop 6 and Bernazard Pop 4 and I've hit 2 of the 4.
Will add scans when I receive them back from PSA.

wow. congrats..was going to attempt the same last spring...maybe there was some publicity going around then..are you doing this with your son, or maybe I'm thinking of another.
doing a quick scan i saw just 2 or so from regular wax...are u avoiding the reg wax packs or they're just bad quality wise?
keep us updated.
Interested in higher grade vintage cards. Aren't we all.
Awesome results, Brett! Also goes to show that 10s ARE possible from vending, too, lol..

SOM -- I believe all those you listed would be considered difficult 10s. I've not hit any of them in PSA 10 yet.
seebelow -- Nobody else to assign blame to. I came up with this crazy idea all on my own. Going forward, my plan is to focus on ripping cello, Mich. wax and rack only. It just seems like I'm getting higher quality cards from those sources. My "To Be Graded" pile has cards from rips back to at least 2011, so there's still cards from other sources (vending, wax) in there.
grote15 -- I wish I had started tracking where all the cards came from when I first started the set. Back in the day, it seemed like BBCE had a constant supply of 83 vending for like $50 a box. I know I pulled many, many 10s from vending. It's just too risky now at today's prices.
dberk12 -- With this latest sub I'm at about 62%. That includes a lot of 9s that I'd love to upgrade.

Here's scans of selected PSA 10s from my latest sub. Might be time for a new scanner as I'm starting to get a purplish tinge to my scans. Using the Epson V300 model. About 5 years old. Any recommendations? Is their an updated model to the V300?
Almost time to start my Winter ripping. I'll post a picture of this years candidates soon.

CS 1s, penny sleeves and since I'm ready to spill over into a 5th Monster Box, on the bottom are two unassembled 5000 count Monster Boxes. Considering the success, or lack thereof, maybe these tools should be nicknamed like catching gear. The "tools of ignorance".
Anyway... Here is what I have on tap to Bust open this Winter.
That's two cellos, two Mich. wax and one rack box. I'll bust one of the cellos in the next couple of days and will post results here.

This was a non-BBCE box purchased off of eBay for $245 in April.
Wasn't expecting much, but not much star power showing. A Yaz Super Vet (in the bottom right in picture) and a Morgan showing on back. No Sandberg's and no Boggs'. Among the 26 gradable cards was a pretty nice Gwynn (probably a 9 at best) and a very nice Rose that has a chance at a 10. I'm averaging about 30 cards pulled per cello box, so this box was a little worse than average. One of the Michigan wax boxes is up next.

This Michigan wax box was purchased from a board member back in June for $245. Interestingly enough, (or maybe not) this is the 3rd box I've ripped from this case. We did a group rip back in 2014 and I purchased a box back then and have now bought two more from board members.
When I first pulled this Gwynn, I thought I had my 10. But upon further review, too much snow and there's something going on on the right hand border towards the top. I'm still putting it in the to be graded pile.
Overall, a pretty solid box. In addition to the Gwynn pictured, I pulled another Gwynn and a Sandberg that were not gradable. Generally, centering was excellent l/r but off just enough t/b or else this box would have been excellent. Including the Gwynn I pulled 22 cards that are going into the grading pile.
The second cello box will be ripped next.

When I was seven I bought my brother five packs of 1983 topps(1984 so they ran me .75 per pack). I bought them at Egad's card shop in Nashville. It was my own money. He pulled Sandberg, Boggs and Gwynn out of those five packs. It has always been one of my favorite designs.

Thanks guys. Since I tend to be somewhat anal, I can accurately answer the above question. I now have a total of 21,771 1983 Topps Baseball cards. Broken down like this:raw-20,652, to be graded-315, graded-804. In addition, I still have a cello box, a Mich. wax box and a rack box to rip.

Awesome. Thanks for the reply. I just had a feeling that you would know the number. Maybe not to that degree. Lol. If or when you have a moment, whats the percentage breakdown of the grades? What % were you fortunate enough to get 10s? There have been many threads going over which are the best boxes in general to rip for submission. I just find statistics very interesting. I love numbers. You sir have renewed my interest in ripping packs. I think Ill dig out a box of 83s and rip away on a slow weekend. If there are any hard pressed numbers that you are looking for PM me. I have a ton just touched once sitting in boxes. Unpicked thru.

This cello box was purchased from a board member back in April for $250.
Pretty much an uninspiring rip. I only pulled 12 submittable cards. About half as many as I average from a cello box. No stars showing top or bottom. One Gwynn. One Sandberg. No Boggs. It's funny, but with all the boxes I've ripped, I've only pulled one submittable Boggs and I only got a PSA 8 on that.
The good news is that I did get a new scanner so no more purplish scans. I hope.
Up next, my second and last Michigan wax box.

This box came from the BBCE Group Rip in October. $250 FASC.
Pretty much another lackluster box. Two OC Sandberg's. No Gwynn. No Boggs. Quality was pretty poor overall. Centering was all over the place and lots of cards lacking crisp color.
All I have left to salvage this year's rips is the rack box.

Thanks for sharing the results, Brett~sorry that last box wasn't better in terms of results. Sometimes the better boxes are the loose ones. Good luck with the rack box!

This box was purchased off of eBay in October. It was listed at $450 BIN/BO. I offered $400 and it was accepted. I kicked in my eBay Bucks and my final cost was $351.
In the auction listing, it was advertised as FASC. The listing showed the boxes nestled in a six box case. I was skeptical, but at $351 that was a good price regardless.
I was pleased when the box arrived and it was really clean with little if any wear. The packs were also snugly packed in the box.
In addition to Sutton, Ryan Super Vet, Yount All Star, etc. These were the best of the star showing packs.
It's probably easier to see on the Ripken, but that card and the Boggs have factory notching marks. The factory notching was actually on many of the top cards in the middle cell of the packs. That consistency and the shape of the box leads me to believe this actually is FASC.
When all was said and done, I pulled 116 cards for grading. Boxes like this make all the ripping (duds and all) worthwhile.
Simply too many cards to scan them all. Nobody wants to see 3 Julio Gonzalezes or 3 Pete Falcone's. Here's a sampling.
There was also some star power.
The box in general had crisp, clean, well-centered cards. The only negative was some stray print marks. Almost like a smearing effect. You can see this on the bottom of the Dawson All Star below one of the points on the star.
I was complaining earlier in this thread about the lack of Boggs being pulled. I'm happy to say I pulled 4 in this box. I also pulled 2 Gwynn's and 1 Sandberg.
This Gwynn is really sharp. OC a tad l/r, but definitely submittable. Ignore the cat hairs.
I'm most excited by these 2 Boggs.
There is the slightest print mark below his knee on both copies, but I've got my fingers crossed for one (or two!) 10s.
I wish I had ripped this box immediately when I got it because I would've gone back for more. The seller was offering all 6 boxes from the case and I was the first buyer. I sort of kept my eye on his listing and he did eventually move all 6 boxes although I believe it was a month or two after I bought mine.
I'm sitting on a renewal voucher that I'll probably put to use on the above Boggses and Gwynn plus some additional Gwynn's I pulled in other rips this year.

You, sir, have a dedication and focus that is truly remarkable. I'd be hard pressed to put so much effort into 3 boxes from 1956! Best of luck with your subs!

Also, here's a scan of the Gwynn 9.

My #2 Ranked Michael Jordan PSA Basic Set
I am trying to complete an HOF/star list of 1983 PSA 10s. I have four to go, but I can never run across these guys:
145 Sutton
270 Eckersley
410 Niekro
610 Garvey
Are they notoriously tough '83s?
Nick
doing a quick scan i saw just 2 or so from regular wax...are u avoiding the reg wax packs or they're just bad quality wise?
keep us updated.
Sweet! Congratulations on your set.

Very nice , as usual ----- Sonny
Almost time to start my Winter ripping. I'll post a picture of this years candidates soon.
Keep at it!

So how many random, picked thru thousands of '83s do you now have accumulated?
Keep up the good work.
Mich. test packs for 25 cents. I bought the last 9 or 10 packs and opened a few.
There did not seem to be a difference in cards. Next day I went to the wholesale
house and bought boxes for $5 each. The clerk offered sealed cases for $80.
They had 4-5 cases but I did not pull the trigger. Supposedly Topps also issued
1984 baseball the same way, never saw those. Best wishes on the set and thanks
for all the updates.

Not sure anyone else is interested, but since you asked...

This is awesome. Thanks for the detailed info. Classic set and thanks for sharing this thread.. I'm in love with the fact you have those percentages down. Good luck with those clean dozen. 58% of them have the classic 'stache.

All part of the ripping game.
