Love this thread and great rip on the rack box, 83 (and 82) are my favorite post 70s sets. This is the type of focus I would love to have when it comes to my collection.

Brett , you got a REAL nice box with that buy . Those 2 Boggs may very well pay for the box and then some . PM me when you get ready to submit as I have some cards that might be able to tag a long , if its a possibility .

I hope you do well , when you submit these cards . ---- Sonny

Glad the rack box turned out so well! You worry me with those plastic sleeves
usually the card sticks out on the right side and I'm afraid you'll ding that corner.
    Why do you use those?
  • LarkinCollectorLarkinCollector Posts: 8,975 ✭✭✭✭✭
I've seen quite a few people use them that way to prevent lower corner dings when attempting to insert the card in the penny sleeve.

Looks like a great rip! Best of luck on the subs.

    Brett,
Awesome rack box! Over 100 cards worthy for grading would have me wanting more. It's nice to see they you received a very nice clean box from an honest seller on eBay. Keep up the great work.

Thanks everybody for the positive reinforcement. I'm pretty sure I'm going to take it easy this year as far as the unopened goes. In previous years I'd try to chip away throughout the year and by the end of the year I'd have 4 or 5 boxes to rip. I'm thinking of maybe cutting back to a box or two and exploring other methods of acquiring cards. I was thinking about buying some complete sets and seeing what kind of luck I'd have with them. Obviously I wouldn't expect much as far as The Big 3 are concerned, but maybe I could find some low pop commons.

I really have to cut into the backlog of cards in my gradable pile. So instead of spending on 4 or 5 boxes, I'm hoping to spend on 4 or 5 submissions this year. Hoping for a more appealing special in March.

From the March Special. Love the percentage of 10s. 21 out of 40. By far my best poppage in terms of percentage of 10s. Honestly, I don't think my grading eye has improved that much. Must have got a grader in a good mood. I'm not complaining! fwiw, there were 10 cards from my score of a rack box (discussed on pg. 8 of this thread) submitted and I got seven 10s, two 9s and an 8.

Mainly clearing out the backlog of gradable cards. Nothing extremely exciting here. Dan Driessen is now a pop 6. The Todd Cruz, Vance Law, Manny Castillo, Checklist #769 and Benny Ayala all have pops in the 7 to 9 range. I'll post some scans when I get the cards back.

Oddly enough, I sent my CC renewal sub in with the March Special and am still waiting on poppage for that. Kind of looking forward to that as I sent in all of my Gwynns and Boggs from my rips this Winter. I have especially high hopes for the Boggs in that sub.

The Gwynns and Boggs were from this Winter's rips. I'm pretty sure I included scans of them after the rips. I really had high hopes for both of those Boggs, but other than that, I think the grades are right on. The search for a PSA 10 Gwynn and Boggs continues.

great looking cards. I am not looking to buy I just want to know do you have a full set for your collection of psa 9 grade. I have all of the hall of famers in psa 9 for my 83 collection. of course I apprectiate the five cards I received from you last winter.

I've been lackadaisical lately updating my set with these latest subs, but I think I'm somewhere in the neighborhood of 550 PSA 9/10. There's a lot of cards in the set (50? 75?) that I don't have even a PSA 9 candidate with 15 or 20 samples to choose from.

From the June special. Feels like I'm spoiled after my last sub when I hit over 50% PSA 10's. But 8 PSA 10's out of 35 is under my about 28% rate of hitting 10's. What kills me is getting two PSA 7's. It's not unusual for me to miss a wrinkle on it seems like every sub, so I can understand getting a PSA 5. But there's no way the centering or corners or edges are PSA 7 worthy on any of these. I'm skeptical they're even as bad as PSA 8's, and I got two of those too! Surface issues of some sort I guess.

The best hit here is the Mike Ivie which is now a Pop 7.

ETA: The source where I pulled the card from.

  • What a great project. I have great memories of this set as well. It was the first set I ever purchased whole as a kid from an ad in a magazine. It came complete with a binder and pages to display I thought I hit the jackpot as a 9 year old. Great cards and best of luck!

How often do you resubmit a card you're convinced should be a 10?
  • ldfergldferg Posts: 6,742 ✭✭✭
Love the 83 set. I remember picking up boxes at SAMs Wholesale and opening them on the kitchen table. Didn't care anything about centering, edges, etc...grading had not been discovered. No internet. Good memories. Good luck on your journey.

I don't recall trying to hunt for Gwynn, Boggs, and Sandberg.

    Thanks,

Just got around to looking at all the cards and the effort going into this project.

    Good show!

I've only opened vending and while corners were strong, centering was a bear - especially with the Gwynn and Boggs cards.

What are 1983 Vending Boxes going for these days?
  • mrpeanut39mrpeanut39 Posts: 841 ✭✭✭
Stone193-Centering seems to be the main defect no matter what medium you're busting. Plenty of times you'll get a card that's 50/50 l/r but way off t/b. Or vice versa.

Dennis88-I picked up a vending box this year for $75. I think that's fairly representative for eBay. You may be able to find them a little cheaper. If you want the security of purchasing from BBCE, they'll be more like $95. But I haven't seen 83 vending on the BBCE site for at least a year. Maybe two.

If I thought about how much this will cost, that would take all of the fun out of it. Obviously it's not a cost efficient endeavor. I just checked and I see that I registered my 83 set back in August 2009. So some quick, dirty math tells me that I'll end up on the plus side of 15K. But spread out over many years it's not that painful. The fun and the challenge is priceless.

You may have answered this earlier in the thread (so I apologize if you have), but do you put the cards you sub in your registry if they don't hit 10s?

This is from the September special. I'm happy to report that after complaining about receiving 2 PSA 7's on my last sub, I didn't receive any PSA 7's this time. However, I was floored to see that I got two PSA 4's. Totally at a loss with comprehending this one.

Overall I hit 13 PSA 10's out of 40, which is higher than my GPA, so I should be happy. But I just can't wrap my head around the PSA 4's. Nothing too notable. I hit 3 pop. 9's.

As I list the source this time, you'll see eBay listed. I've started purchasing lots and near sets off of eBay. You can imagine that this can be a total crapshoot and you'd be right. But the price is right. I think I'm spending about $25 per set/lot including shipping and I am pulling some nice cards out of even the shakiest sets.

I'll post some scans when I get the cards back from PSA.

That's hard to imagine a 4 with the attention you pay to the cards before submitting. Otherwise that's a great sub!

I get my share of PSA 5's. Seems like I miss a wrinkle from time to time, but I don't know what could be wrong to merit a PSA 4. I'll have to check them out when I get the cards back.

Nice get on the Tommy Boggs card. That is a very low pop item in PSA 10.

Surprisingly the T. Boggs is now a pop 9. When I first started the set, there were about a dozen cards that had yet to pop a 10. Now every card is at least a pop 2 in PSA 10. In January 2010 there were about 55,00 1983 Topps cards graded. Today there's about 89,000. A perfect 10 set is a definite possibility.

Here's some scans of some PSA 10's from this latest sub.

Finally a super special bonus scan!

This George Cappuzzello (Two p's. Two z's. Two l's.) is a 1 of 1 with none lower.

    Nice 10's Brett!
That has to be the best 4 I have seen! It must have some small surface wrinkles.

I looked closely and didn't see anything, but it's hard to catch everything when it's already in a holder.

it would be interesting if you cracked it and re-submitted it and see where it goes.

    nice 10's by the way

Here's what I'll be ripping this Winter.

Stinky picture, but I was trying to represent all sources this year. I've got a cello box, a wax box, a rack box constructed from a number of different lots, 2 vending boxes and a lot of 11 Michigan Wax packs. The Michigan Wax packs will be up first.
