SOME GOTCHAS:
You must follow PSA's guidelines for packaging. I will not put your cards in Card Saver I's or anything like that. I need them to come to me in Card Savers I's with or without penny sleeves. I intend to take your cards out of your box and put them in another box with the rest of the order. I will not risk damaging your items. I intend to handle them only long enough to transfer them from one location to another. That's it. Nothing fancy!

A Little About Me:
My name is Kevin O'Connor and I have been a long-time (nearly 30 years) Cal Ripken, Jr. card collector, have the #1 Ripken Master Set on the PSA Registry, and have been featured in the Sports Market Report. On eBay I'm "mystorageshed" and have a 100% positive feedback score of over 900 without any negatives ever and routinely purchase from Probstein123 on the PSA message boards.

I thought it would be nice to do something that would benefit the PSA community.
I collect PSA cards of the following:
Billy Ripken
Cal Ripken, Jr. 1980-2002
Cal Ripken, Sr.

  • If you guys do get the 500 around tell us what price you got. I would get in on this, but I slowly build large submissions and have not gotten enough cards ready yet. This topic is something similar to what i thought about in the past getting a group of people togeither to get cheaper submissions and possibly a bump in the grades.
  • I am good for at least 100. Maybe 150-200 in a few weeks time. When are we thinking about subbing them?

I'm doubting it would be any sooner than 1 month. I would need to get 500 or more cards which will take some time getting people on board, get the okay from PSA in writing with a price everyone agrees with, and then get everyone to ship them to me for repackaging.

A good point has been brought up over PM:

How do I handle vouchers since I can't split them up? I'm going to have to find out if I can split them up. Hopefully, I can get them to do that.

    Kevin,

Here has been my experience when submitting large orders with PSA. First they want you to break them down into smaller lots. They wont take 500+ card orders in one single submission. So this is what I would suggest.

First we would get the best price with the most cards that we submitt. I will have to go back and search what my best price was last year when i sent in a large self submission. I have changed job locations so it might take me awhile to track down old emails off an retained hard drive.

Second, I would recommend that each person would have their own submission number for their order. That would mean that each person would need to have at least a 100 of their own cards to submitt. That way if there are vouchers you will know to whom the vouchers belong. I belive that the vouchers come with submission/order numbers on them. With this format I also think that people could have their cards shipped straight back to the them vs having them all come to you and you having to reship them. We would only have to ship them to you to package up all together to go out at once. However you might be able to talk to PSA to see if we could ship them straight to PSA as well.

Three, you will need hard numbers to give to PSA as to how many cards will be graded.

Depending on how long this takes maybe some one could even drop them off at a show. The only problem with that is that one person would have to take care of any little issue with someone else's order. Though it would save on shipping, but then again with a group the shipping would be slipt anyway.

Just my two or four cents. Shot me a PM if you have any questions or just fire away on the board.

I'm going to give this one more week and then I'll move forward with whatever people have sent me lists. Currently, I have 500 cards that people have given lists for.

DEADLINE TO SUBMIT ME THE REQUIRED INFORMATION FOR A QUOTE:
    8/27/2012

This gives 2 weekends to get the information together, so that should be doable. Please see the first post for the information required at this point to participate.

    EDITED TO ADD:
The deadline is for people to give me the short list of information I need for a quote:
    Total # of cards:
    Sport(s):
    Year(s):
Manufacturer/Set (if all or mostly from the same set)
    Declared Values (average per card)

I won't need the full list of cards until we have a quote and people start sending me cards.

    Thanks,

Here has been my experience when submitting large orders with PSA. First they want you to break them down into smaller lots. They wont take 500+ card orders in one single submission. So this is what I would suggest.

Here is some info 4 U guys - hope it helps. I did pay $4.50 per card for the most part. All cards for the $4.50 price were post 1956 as well.

I just did an 1100 card sub. PSA asked me to put it into three lots. The lot of approx. 100 cards were for all valued at over $100 and pre '56, and they would not honor the $4.50 price. They actually jacked my usual $8 per price on the high end '55 AA's to $10 per. In addition, in Jan. 2012 they quoted me $4.25 per card on the bulk sub and now they insisted on $4.50 as their rock bottom.

]They broke my sub up in to one lot of 500 and another of 514 on the $4.50 per. The first 500 was completed in about 5-7 bus. days, and the 514 sub followed about 5 - 7 days thereafter.

I actually drop off and pick up, so it was a breeze. Also, I consented to a "bulk sub" so not necessary to fill out 50+ submission forms. That makes it easy as well.

Their service on this large order was better than normal. I was pleased with all aspects (except for some of the grades of course!!!!).

Again, hope this assists U all.
  • Mickey71Mickey71 Posts: 4,252 ✭✭✭✭
The part you said that they would not honor the $4.50 price on the plus $100 stuff doesn't make sense to me. You said you had a $8 deal in place so why would you even mention they wouldn't honor the $4.50 deal? Did they say you could send them all in? I know you have nice 55 AA's; but most of them should qualify for the under $100 unless you're already factoring in that they grade 9's and 10's.
  • macboubemacboube Posts: 336 ✭✭
I mentioned it only to attempt to clarify that any card valued at over $100 and pre '56 would not be allowed 4 subbing @ $4.50.
  • smallstockssmallstocks Posts: 1,631 ✭✭✭✭
What submsission forms did you actually have to fill out?

Late 60's and early to mid 70's non-sports
  • macboubemacboube Posts: 336 ✭✭
U sign a bulk waiver form and just fill out one reg sub form for ea sub and the rep just writes "bulk" on it.
  • Here is the email I sent to PSA this morning. I'll let you know what I hear back. The person I'm working with is on vacation until tomorrow.

    Total # of cards: 500-1000
    Sport(s): All Sports/Non-Sports
Year(s): Any year 1956 and beyond
Manufacturer/Set (if all or mostly from the same set) Any
Declared Values (average per card) There won't be any cards over $100 on the submission

This is pretty much Collector's Club Special #1. I would really like to see if we could get $4.25/card for 500+ cards.
Also, I am coordinating a group sub for this on the message boards and those submitting would like to know if rather than sending all their cards to me, if they could get some sort of code and submit the cards themselves.

    Hope this information helps.

    Thanks,
    Kevin

I just got a response back from PSA that our rate for 500 cards would be $5.00 and no lower. I asked about what the rate would be for 1,000 or even 2,000 and will post the results. If it's $5.00 no matter what, I think that might blow it for a lot of people. I'm still going to submit because I have no way of getting a lower rate than that. In addition, I have to submit them altogether. They can't be broken up at all.

They don't appear to be hurting for submissions. But we already knew that.

I'll post back when I find out more. Hopefully we can get the price down a little. If not, I'll poll the group who said yes and see who is still in.

UPDATE: If we get 2,000 cards we get $4.50 / card!

Since PSA has told me we need to submit all the cards together, we will now have an issue with vouchers. Any ideas? I can ask if I can get vouchers split up. If I can't get that to happen, then what? What do other submitters do for the group in group subs? Obviously I can't keep vouchers for other people's cards. Perhaps if one person got the lion's share of the vouchers they pay for the rest and take them all. I don't know. Anyway, ideas are appreciated. I see the higher price and the voucher issue as possible deal killers for many, but we'll see. I'm still in since I don't see a way to get a lower price.

To give everyone enough time to organize and submit their cards to me for repackaging, please plan on a deadline of October 15th to have the cards to me. That gives me a couple weeks before November to get everything together.

Here are the requirements of the group sub:
    1) Any Sport/Non-Sports
    2) No minimum number of cards required to participate
    3) Every card must have a declared value of $100 or less
    4) Cards must be regular thickness and able to fit in standard PSA holders

Cards MUST be received by October 15th. The special is void after that. I have to have the cards in to PSA within 2 months or the special is voided. If we collect up 2000+ cards, we get the rate of $4.50/card, otherwise the breakdown is as follows:

    500-999 - $5.00/card
    1000+ - $4.75/card
    2000+ $4.50/card

Please PM for my address and details on where to submit PayPal payments for PSA charges and shipping. I won't need to be paid until I have everyone's cards. At that point I will assign an estimate of shipping/insurance to PSA based on the percentage of cards you sent me compared to the total. I will try to over-estimate the actual shipping so I can easily refund you the difference and so I won't need to go back to you for more money. I do not make money on any of this. That is not the reason for the over-estimate. It just seems easier to manage that way rather than going back to people for more money. I will provide a copy of the receipt from the Post Office on my web site so you can see what the true total was. I will put together a complete list of everything that is going to occur and when and provide my contact information and address to those who are participating. This information will also be on my website and I will post a link to it this evening. I will also provide spreadsheets in various Excel formats for you to use for your submissions. This will greatly help me consolidate the items for the orders.

    I hope everyone enjoys this!

It's very nice of you to put this together and take the time to handle it. Thanks.

<< <i>This way I can keep track of who is submitting what to make sure no one is submitting the same cards, since there is no way to easily determine after the fact who gets what cards if they are the same. >>

I would definitely like to get in... but this makes no sense to me!

So, I could potentially have a bunch of cards disallowed from the submission because someone else already provided you a list with those cards on it???

Box, sort and list in order... as far as I know, this has never been a problem.

    Please advise

    @epatmythes:
It would seem to me if 2 people send the same cards and PSA grades them and sends them back, how am I to know which card goes to which person? It probably hasn't been an issue in past group subs because people aren't submitting as many cards so the possibility of overlap between people was smaller. I already have lists from people for over 500 total cards and it hasn't been an issue. If the cards are significantly different condition-wise I suppose it wouldn't be a problem, but otherwise I won't be able to tell a difference when they come back from PSA.

Do you have any suggestions for this issue? Perhaps it will be a moot point anyway. I will check and see if I can break the order into 4 separate invoices of 500 each and then it definitely won't be problem no matter what.

I can split the order into 4 invoices of 500 cards each. This will solve the issue with the same cards coming from multiple people.

If you stack and sort the cards in the exact order they are listed on the submission sheets... PSA has always been very good about keeping that order...

So, if Bob Submits 100 cards, Joe submits 100 cards, Frank submits 200 cards, and Dave submits 100 cards...

You list Bob's 100, then Joe's 100, then Frank's 200, and then Dave's 100... and you pack the cards up in the exact order that they are listed on the submission form(s)...

When you get them back... let's say the first cert number is 23020001...

Bob's 51st card, would be 23020051... and his 100th card would be 23020100... and so on, and so forth...

So Frank's 51st card... would be the 251st on the submission form(s), the 251st in the stack of cards in that submission package... and ultimately, would be cert number 23020251

It really just comes down to very well organized packaging... and making it very simple and straight forward for PSA to open & process

I've never once used stickers on the Card Savers, have done my own subs of anything from 1 card to over 200... and participated in several group subs of different variety, done like this, and it's never been a problem

Honestly, I'm not trying to call you out... just trying to pass along a little info, and I'd be happy to assist if needed/requested/desired!!!

I didn't realize they did that, although I'm not sure I would rely on that as something that would always happen. I'm fairly certain I've had orders that have come back in a different order than I submitted them. I can split the cards between 4 separate orders of 500, so it shouldn't matter.

It occurs to me that splitting the order up will jack up the cost of shipping back from PSA. I'll try to keep things in as few orders as possible and hope the issue with duplication doesn't occur or that I can mitigate it by the order of the cards.
