It seems you're UNaware that some people have had extreme success on Craigslist.
Edited to add: ... AND NOT... same thing as GAI packs.
  • Non taken Downtown. It was my opinion and if I write anything on here just like any of you, then that means its open for discussion. I'm open to all critique.

As far as me purchasing and losing out on the $2200, it wasn't me. Ill admit I made my mistake a few months back but I own up to it. Its not a big deal. Most people on here will just say "you learn for next time" but this one wasn't mine - but I can see how some including myself would think that when you read something like this. But even if people want to think it happened to me, that's fine - that parts irrelevant to the story. I did make a huge single card purchase about less than 2 months ago but it was graded by psa.

As far as the ad, it was deleted. This happened in Tampa. I live in Broward county which is like almost 4 hrs away. We have a card show here once a month and that dealer (which I know solely from the card show) comes down. We have lots of guys that come down that live a few hours away. The shows are Friday and Saturday. Some come Saturday and other drive down Friday - do that show and stay the night in a hotel and also do the show on Saturday.

Even though he did have a print out of the ad because he showed me, couldn't that be good enough to maybe file a police report?

Edit: Sorry, I was just trying to answer all the questions people maybe were asking or wondering and forgot some.

About the cops - its just because they're a lot of crazy people out there and the way he described how the guy started yelling and cursing up a storm over the phone, it would be ill-advised if he just went to his home alone. As far as the people who I mentioned were knowledgeable, these people are in other citys but they all see each other at the shows. He did tell me that he called one of the guys and he tried to best describe how the card SHOULD look like. Im telling you guys, that 53 looked pretty darn good but if you would of seen that 61 Mantle, that would have been another topic all by itself.

It's nothing personal or meant to be condescending, and I'd be willing to bet you're a good guy to share a beer with, but I'll ask you to consider the possibility that despite the windfalls you've enjoyed, that Craigslist, which you describe as a place where "most of the stuff posted is junk or fakes" IS a bad thing, and I'm right to act like that IS a bad thing.
  • Scammers and idiots make craigslist a bad thing.

Craigslist isn't a bad thing by itself, sorry but it isn't an entity it is a website.

It sounds to me that you either need to really know what you are buying or be buying large amounts of mass produced stuff at give away prices.

I am sure you find a few awesome deals but for every great deal there are probably four bad ones.

Generalizing and saying it is all bad is probably the wrong thing to do but for most stay away.

<< <i>Do we have a craigslist find post? That should be bumped. >>

    This should do nicely.

20 most bizarre Craigslist adverts of all time

    1) Ralph Nader chair
"Yes, that's right. Ralph Nader, perennial Green Party candidate for the U.S. presidency MAY have sat in this very chair! It was used in his Washington, DC campaign headquarters until I purchased it on Craiglist several months ago. It has a nice red, commie upholstery and a sleek black plastic backing. The wheels don't function well, but that is a small price to pay for state control of the means of production."

    2) I want some orange juice
"I'll give you $2 + cost if you'll deliver me some orange juice with receipt. I'm too lazy to get it myself. I live right by University Drive in Elon. Thank you."

    3) Seeking adult drunk clown for 30th birthday party
"We need an Adult Drunk Clown who is good at getting drunk and stupid. No need to do any clown tricks, just hang out and drink a sh1t load. We will be hopping around to different bars and want a clown to tag a long and drink heavely. He doesn't even need to socialize with anyone, just drink."

    4) Duck mask
"Full head rubber mask, old, has discoloration on white feather part from age, storage. Hey I got it on my big head, so it works that way."

    5) Woman to sit in my bath tub full of noodles, wearing a bathing suit

"I will pay you $1 to sit in my bathtub full of noodles while you wear a one piece bathing suit. I will not be home, nor will anyone else while you do this. I will leave the key for you, and you will sit at your leisure. DO NOT bring any sauce. I will season the pasta after I return home prior to dinner."

    6) Wanted: Pony
"My kid is having a birthday coming up soon, and there'll be a lot of children around, so I figured I'd better get a pony. If you do have a pony you could sell, please contact me, and then immediately start putting barbeque sauce in it's bedding or add some Lawry's to it's salt lick - I like to marinade it early and long, so that the flavor is at it's peak by the time I take possession."

    7) I have a huge bathroom
"I am a female in my mid 60's and I am looking for a room mate. Times are tight and I need some extra money. I am willing to rent out my bathroom in my 1 bedroom east village home. My bathroom is large. You can easily put a twin air mattress in there. I only ask that when I need to use the bathroom, you or your air mattress are not in it. I do ask that when you are in the apartment, you confine yourself to the bathroom. I do not feel comfortable with a stranger walking around my living room. This might change as I get to know you better."

    8) Pope hats
"Because of this terrible economy, I'm having to shut down my business. I have OVER 1300 Pope hats (replicas) that I REALLY need to get rid of. The pope hats came from China and are a little too small for most adult heads and are also irritating to the skin, so you would need to have long hair or wear a smaller hat underneath (just like the REAL POPE). Dogs do not like to wear these pope hats, but maybe a large cat or maybe a nice dog would wear one."

    9) Need someone to hide easter eggs in my apartment when im not home
"I need someone to hide easter eggs in my apt when i am not there ! They are small and filled with candy! I would like to find them myself on sunday! I am willing to pay! Serious inquiries only!"

    10) Free couch, if you can bend time and/or space
"I have a free couch for anyone who can get it back out of my room. It's a comfy couch, cool stripe velvet in great shape, impossibly uncomfortable sleeper, but otherwise easily worth $50-75 bucks in Craigslist land. So why am I listing in for free? Because I am pretty sure it is physically impossible to remove this thing from my second story bedroom down the narrow hallway, down the narrower staircase and out the front door of my little Victorian duplex."

    11) I took your purse and felt a connection
"Tuesday night around 11:30. On 53rd btw 1st and 2nd. You came out of the subway and I followed you. You looked over your shoulder, saw me and started walking faster. I ran up, grabbed your arm, took your purse and ran away. I've done many a snatch-and-grab but no one has ever stuck in my mind like you. There was a quick moment when our eyes met that I felt something strong. I think you felt it too. If I wasn't so shy (or so committing a crime) I would have asked your name. I, of course, later got your name from your drivers license. So Jennifer if you'd like to get together for a drink sometime get back to me."

    12) Looking for bridesmaids
"So, my fiancee and I are getting married in June. He has 8 groomsmen lined up and I only have one bridesmaid. So, I need some girls who are attractive and around my age to stand up in my wedding. You can be single or taken. It doesn't matter....you just have to be hot. But, not hotter then me. Email me for more information. The wedding will be in Madison and you won't have to pay for a thing."

    13) Do you have a small, incontinent dog?
"Or perhaps you work for a small dog rescue of some sort. Either way, I have a package of small doggy diapers. I don't want to throw them out coz they are pretty expensive. (as someone with a small, incontnent dog would already know). Please don't try to put them on a cat. It won't work. Trust me."

    14) My teeth
"I left my Dentures in your Silverado last night. I gave you my number but did not get yours. Please call me asap. I need my teeth. We met in the parking lot of Margarita Jones. Get back to me asap please. Thank you."

    15) Disgruntled American seeks Canadian for political asylum, maybe more
"Are you a lonely, possibly desperate Canadian woman aged 18-50? Tired of trying to find a good man among your flannel clad, Labatt's drinking, moose hunting country men? Willing to take in an American who is fed up with his country? Then I'm the guy for you! Maybe you're a bit overweight or suffer from "Lifelong Ugly Duckling" syndrome. I don't care."

    16) Autographed copy of Plato's Republic
"1st edition of The Republic signed by its author. There is of course a reasonable amount of wear and tear, (light highlighting and underlining, dog-eared pages, back cover missing, etc.), but it is in overall good condition considering its age."

    17) Ferocious attack kitten
"This destructive kitty has been trained as a proud warrior and will fiercely defend your house, even against you. Has a very soft and furry belly, like a teddy bear - however he will bite your face if you try to touch it. For the love of God, someone please take this thing out of my house."

    18) Free - international ketchup packet collection
"This is a collection of ketchup packets from around the world. approximately 25 countries are represented here, including japan, finland, estonia, greenland, brazil, and portugal. none of the packets have been opened and they are labeled with their home country. Collection comes in decorative box with ducks on it."

    19) Personal texting assistant
"I get 40 - 50 texts an hour, I cant handle my workload plus texting responsibilities. My phone gets too full and needs deleted every couple hours. This is a full time position and you must be where ever I am at, because my phone is always with me. Serious inquiries only."

    20) 300 stuffed penguins
"I'm going through a pretty weird time in my life right now--having just gone through a break-up and graduated college and temporarily living in my parents' house before I move out for good in in the fall, though I remain unemployed because my philosophy degree is at *such* a premium--and sifting through my room (which has become a strange amalgam of my adolescence and burgeoning adulthood), it's been brought to my attention that I probably won't "catch a man" or have anyone believe I'm about to turn 23 with 300 penguins and a bunch of purple furniture around, that looking at my current room one might think some sort of 13-year-old with developmental issues is living here."
  • #3 cracked me up. Never seen that before. Thanks for the laugh.

    LOL!!
  • Did the scammer at least buy breakfast?

Since he scammed, seems the dealer was the one who bought the food that day. In all honestly, I dont even know if they ate together. The dealer said that they were sitting there for 2 hours just looking at the cards because like you pointed out earlier, there was more cards but the 51 Mantle was the big one that he wanted $1500 for and he wasn't budging from that price he said. One thing I dont get though is that if the guy said that they were his dads cards, then why were some graded. Its obvious were not going to know why but one theory Ive thought of is that maybe they were his dads and after he passed away, the son tried to get them graded and maybe the Mantles came back as fakes and that's why those were left ungraded.
  • Or he put a few low dollar graded cards with a high dollar fake.

Real collectors - like the 99% of us on this forum - can find deals on Craigslist. We know to skip, laugh or be disgusted at the ads selling Aaron rookie cards, and we just laugh at the 80's and 90's wax boxes for $500. But I have found great deals scooping up large lots of cards for $50-$100 or so. My last $50 lot purchase netted me roughly $225 on ebay resales and added a few cards to my collection. Sure I ended up donating about 2,000 commons but the 15 or so good cards hidden in the lot made it worthwhile.

I made $15K in profits off Craigslist last year, but it was in buying and reselling those Magic The Gathering cards. You really just need to know how to sort out the junk so you don't waste your time. You then need to ask certain questions up front and always demand pictures before meeting up with someone.

I had one situation that I am pretty sure if I had met up with the person I would have probably been robbed. This person had been using stolen pictures from a website of the "collection" he said he had. Something didn't look right about the pics he sent me and a quick google search showed he stole pics that came up on the first page of the google image search.

I started asking more and more questions and all he cared about was how much cash I was going to be bringing with me and kept trying to get me to meet him at a house.

I always control where I am going to meet someone, it will always be at a very public place. I also have my conceal carry permit and do carry when I meet people in public places. Finally if it is a bigger deal where I will have $1000+ in cash on me I bring along a friend who is also conceal carrying so he is an extra set of eyes in case someone tries to pull something on us.
  • Dpeck100Dpeck100 Posts: 10,912 ✭✭✭✭✭
    Brendan that is great!

You have commented for quite sometime about trading around in the Magic The Gathering market and there seems to be a lot of action there and money to be made.

I think it is very smart to bring a friend who is packing a concealed weapon for protection.

no offense, but i do think this whole entire story is a big bogus fish tale.....op just trying to entertain us
always looking for 1969 graded basketball
  • I've only got 3 conceal carry permits and only a couple dozen friends that are willing to come along to the local IHOP at any given time, so whenever I want to buy a card from craigslist, I hire some professionals.

First we soften up the target area with some light phosphorous, only a couple tons, then some of the Libyan and Iranian guys release some bio stuff. 12 Navy SEALS carrying flamethrowers surround me and my bodyguards and snipers placed around the perimeter acquire potential targets and lock them in. We order breakfast (I'm partial to blueberry stackers), lob a few grenades and then start throwing up anti-tank ironworks as a detachment from the CIA waterboards anyone left standing in the dining room. After that we do the deal and then go to the firing range to shoot cannonballs at an old nuclear reactor somebody found at the local Army/Navy surplus.

    Onlyanumber,

Here is the corporate information. It is a private company that does indeed have an ownership stake of 25% by EBAY. You could never though go after EBAY in regards to an issue from Craigslist. This company has very little assets and has no goal it says of maximizing profits. I guarantee that there are tons of disclosures that say they are only a listing service and have no liability if things go wrong. You are basically on your own.

The site serves over 20 billion page views per month, putting it in 37th place overall among web sites worldwide and 10th place overall among web sites in the United States (per Alexa.com on March 24, 2011), with over 49.4 million unique monthly visitors in the United States alone (per Compete.com on January 8, 2010). With over 80 million new classified advertisements each month, Craigslist is the leading classifieds service in any medium. The site receives over 2 million new job listings each month, making it one of the top job boards in the world.[8][9] The 23 largest US Cities listed on the Craigslist home page collectively receive more than 300,000 postings per day just in the "for sale" and "housing" sections as of October, 2011.[10] The classified advertisements range from traditional buy/sell ads and community announcements to personal ads.
In 2009, Craigslist operated with a staff of 28 people.[11]

In December 2006, at the UBS Global Media Conference in New York, Craigslist CEO Jim Buckmaster told Wall Street analysts that Craigslist has little interest in maximizing profit, instead it prefers to help users find cars, apartments, jobs, and dates.[12][13]
Craigslist's main source of revenue is paid job ads in select cities – $75 per ad for the San Francisco Bay Area; $25 per ad for New York City, Los Angeles, San Diego, Boston, Seattle, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Philadelphia, Orange County (California) and Portland, Oregon – and paid broker apartment listings in New York City ($10 per ad).
The company does not formally disclose financial or ownership information. Analysts and commentators have reported varying figures for its annual revenue, ranging from $10 million in 2004, $20 million in 2005, and $25 million in 2006 to possibly $150 million in 2007.[14][15][16]
On August 13, 2004, Newmark announced on his blog that auction giant eBay had purchased a 25% stake in the company from a former principal. Some fans of Craigslist expressed concern that this development would affect the site's longtime non-commercial nature, but it remains to be seen what ramifications the change will actually have. As of May 2011, there have been no substantive changes to the usefulness or non-advertising nature of the site—no banner ads, charges for a few services provided to businesses.
The company is believed to be owned principally by Newmark, Buckmaster, and eBay (the three board members). eBay owns approximately 25%, and Newmark is believed to own the largest stake.[16][17][7]
In April 2008, eBay announced it was suing Craigslist to "safeguard its four-year financial investment." eBay claimed that in January 2008, Craigslist executives took actions that "unfairly diluted eBay's economic interest by more than 10%."[18] In response, Craigslist filed a counter-suit against eBay in May 2008 "to remedy the substantial and ongoing harm to fair competition" that Craigslist claims is constituted by eBay's actions as Craigslist shareholders.[19]
