This is truly a rare opportunity. I'm quite sure that once the whole boxes become available you'll see this break quickly fill up. Remember since people who want boxes can't get packs yet they're waiting anxiously for the 48 hour mark.
And frankly if it doesn't I might even pick up a box or two simply as an investment ... I imagine in 20 years these will be worth 10 times as much. >>
Actually BBCE last sold a 1976 Topps box at $1620 (in the last group break). They currently have a stand-alone 1977 Topps wax box listed at $1050.
In terms of comparing 1976 to 1977, you have similarity in the level of players in the RCs (1976 Eckersley, Guidry versus 1977 Dawson, Murphy). Other than that 1976 gets and edge for having the 2nd year Brett & Yount cards and the ATGs. The only other edge I can think of for 1977 is for the different card stock that did not survive as well as other years.
Overall I'd say $1k for these probably includes the sealed case "premium", and seems about right to me. I don't quite see 10x returns on these in 20 years, but they will appreciate from here. Just remember to have Steve shrink wrap and sticker the boxes indicating that they came from a sealed case break.
And in terms of the speed at which this break is going at, I'd say that it is roughly as expected. It was not clear whether to set the pack limit to 6 or 8, so 8 was taken and the results so far are what they are. After we see how it ultimately turns out there may be some "fine-tuning" to do on this approach. However, this approach is doing what needs to be done; giving the smaller buyers a fair chance to get to the table first and get a decent meal before the big fish come in.

How come when Tim (Grote15) said "I'll take a box. Thanks!" you didn't quote him all the rules Like you did when Manny (flatfoot816) said "greetings! I will take a box." ?
Also, your name seems to be on the "reserved box" list (nowhere in the thread did you make such a request), and Manny's does not.
You responded to Manny (flatfoot816) with "The way I understand it you need to wait to submit the box requests until Thursday evening (at the 48 hour mark).", but obviously you didn't wait since you are on he reserved box list.
Then Manny politely mentioned he just wanted to hold his spot since others were, and you hit him with more rules (in bold face) as to why he cant, but yet you did since you are on the reserved box list.
So if the responses you gave Manny (not really your job to respond to anyone) are correct, then my questions to you are:
A) Why is there a reserved box list Why are you already on it

Fair questions to which I will respond.
1) I did not see Tim's post, as I don't make it a habit to go back through every post in a thread. I usually start at the end and just add-on to the end.
2) You just made me aware of the fact that there is apparently a "reserved" list. IMO there should not be. It should all be 1st-come-1st-served as of the start time posted. The only possible exception I'd consider is that the person running the break (Mike) should be entitled to a slot since he's doing the work.
3) I can guess how I got onto the "reserved" list (as I contributed ideas to Mike on how to do this break and some reasons why I thought box requests in the original "discussion" thread should be ignored). I did not post in that original thread for what I believed to be legitimate reasons. Instead I sent Mike a few PMs that were completely consistent with everything you have ever seen me post here about keeping access to breaks/rips fair for all. I also made no request to be put on any sort of reserved list (I think it was a later addition to the original posting Mike made so I never saw it until now).
If Mike decides to keep the reserved list (which is up to him), I officially request to be removed from it. All I asked him for was a equal chance as anyone else here when the first 48 hour wind expires (one of the reasons I gave to Mike about why I was against honoring requests from the original "discussion" thread). I am perfectly happy to take my chances with everyone else.
I remain 100% committed to the premise that Group Breaks/Rips should provide equivalent opportunity to all forum members that want to participate, regardless of how much they are able to do so. I am also respectful of the need to provide opportunity for all types of participation (packs versus full boxes in this instance), which will always need to be reasonable when considering to the volume of material available.
Hope that answers your questions, but if you feel the need for follow-up you can either do it here publically or PM me.
Regards and wishes for a great 2012 for all of you.
I think this is why there are people already on the "box reserve list", because it was carried over from the first thread.

The least of our worries with this break is that we are going to have more buyers than boxes. Frankly, I'm not sure the case will even sell out.
Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
The only time I can recall doing a case break of this value was the 75 mini case we did about 5 years ago which barely sol out and that was a much more popular issue. We also did a 78 OPC case break recently, though that cost per box was a lot lower and even that one we had some difficulty selling out, if memory serves.

All have valid points, but we might as well save the speculation until the 48-hour clock runs out. I have a feeling there are many people waiting to pounce on a full box.
I see both sides as far as boxes go. I thought we would just box sell out, but realize it's not in everyone's budget. So that's why I figured setting 6 aside would be enough for the pack buyers.
The question is the carry over from the original thread... I put that I thought it was only fair that the ones that originally requested a box get one. This was the discussion before packs were talked about.
Either way we can just wait till the 48 hours, just trying to please everyone.
Toppsfanatic and I had many discussions regarding how many packs and such, and he gave great input while I was in the middle of posting this thread(before it went live). He had said he wanted one to, so I put him down as reserved without his knowledge. Again he said he wanted one before we started packing some of these boxes out.
Either way it's fine by me. Whichever pleases the court we will do.
I always planned on putting in a request at the 48 hour mark, so that's still my plan. Besides, I was a member of the US Olympic speed-typing team back in my youth and despite getting close to the advanced age of 50 I still type fast enough that I am pretty confident I'll get a request in on time.
;-)
Nice job on this break Mike. Instead of getting 8-10 people involved I'll bet you end up with 40-50! And all of them will be happy that they got some of what they wanted with none of them getting shut out completely.

Myself, Grote, Cpamike, and toppsfanatic are the ones who were discussing the case break. At first it was just boxes, but after several PM's it was decided to set aside 6 boxes for packs. As I stated with this thread when I first posted it, the 4 of us are reserved bc we came up with it. That only seems fair, and I'm sticking to my word.
That leaves 6 boxes up for grabs at 8:57pm eastern time.
I did the best I could to please all parties and be fair. I always do with these breaks. Many of us have given up our packs or boxes just so others could be included.
Thanks to the 4 of you for figuring out this break. I am a small fish in the big pond here, but appreciate the chance to participate in breaks like these. Kudos to you all!

Mike has run these as smooth as can be, and asks nothing in return. Hell, we've seen him GIVE HIS OWN wax/racks to others when a mistake occurred when he certainly didnt have to. thats what kind of a human being Mike is.
