Also agree that there were a lot of good deals in between the stronger prices~I was planning to get home from the beach earlier on Saturday night, but got tied up in traffic and didn't make it home till extended bidding was already in effect. What I get for procrastinating. That said, if anyone here won the #109 Hendrick or the #71 Hough, or the #458 Grimsley, please let me know if you want to sell them. I have a couple nice raw #71 Houghs and a #109 Hendrick to send in, but would prefer to buy them already graded. Also agree with Ryan that the purchase process and experience via Heritage was very impressive~and the fact that they accept paypal makes it so much more convenient than the typical AH, too!

It had been a while since I ripped any minis. This past week I got the itch and ripped a few packs. Ended up pulling a bunch of nicely centered cards and several star cards. I wanted to share these four here.
I'm hoping all of these have a chance at 9, but I'm worried the Yount is centered just a bit too low. The Schmidt and Stargell are within 9 range t/b. Card #623 is just ridiculously tough to find without the print smudge on Veryzer picture. This one is a dandy and beats the 9 I have in my set. Slightly off centered, but actually with 10 range at 58/42.
Would love your opinions. As always, I'll share the actual results once I get this sub off to PSA.
P.S. Tim, I picked up the 9 George Hendrick so I've got the 8 that I pulled from a pack and self submitted available.
Those are some beautiful cards, Ryan! Yount may be a bit low but I think it has a shot. Good luck!
PM sent on the Hendrick, too.
Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
Nice Mini's Ryan! Assuming perfect surfaces, I'm going to say the Schmidt is a solid 8 due to centering a bit off in both directions. Stargell and Yount, especially, look a bit low, but l/r centering looks near perfect and the the other attributes are very nice. So, I'd say you have a shot at 9's on both. I'll guess 8 on the Yount and 9 on the Stargell (the Stargell has slightly better centering, at least it looks that way to me). The Hernandez card is gorgeous! I'll say high end 9. The centering "looks" off l/r ever so slightly, otherwise I'd say 10 on that one. Good luck with the sub!
Surfaces are great on the cards above. Really centering is the only question mark in my mind. I've got my fingers crossed that they grade where you all think they could. Straight 9s would be awesome!
Here's a few more cards from these same packs. Over all really nice centering on over half the cards I pulled these are some I think have a chance at 10 with a 9 for the Miller.
Acosta looks razor sharp, as well. Nice cards, Ryan!
Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
Nice cards! I'll make a bold guess and say 10 on the Acosta and 9 on the other 3. I agree on the Miller; that's about the cleanest one I've ever seen. Good luck with the sub!
Thanks fellas! The Acosta is perfect, IMO. Can't find a flaw with it. I love the Miller too. When I pulled that from the pack I immediately knew this was a special card. Re: the Yount. How exactly to you measure T/B centering on the Minis? Do you measure to the players name or the bottom of the baseball? If you go to the baseball, the Yount is 62/38 T/B, within 9 range. What about on the 74 Highlight cards below? Is the Aaron to OC for a 9?
The ones below also came from the recent rip. Hoping for a nice September CC special so I can get these submitted.
On the non-highlight cards, I've heard that some measure from the bottom edge of the baseball. That has never consistently worked for me. I always measure from the bottom edge of the player name, because I think the eye tends to see centering from there more than from the baseball.
Because the bottom edge of the baseball shadow normally aligns with the bottom edge of the player name, I suppose you could measure from that shadow, and doing so might work for those Mini's with low player names like Darrell Evans or Steve Hargan, but even on those, in my experience, the graders seem to eyeball it from the player name, not the baseball (or its shadow).
Edited to add that my guesses on those four are: Kaline and Aaron - 8; Grief - 9 and Ryan - 7.
I contacted VCP about their adding the heritage auction to the prices a week ago or so...I am waiting to use this auction as the point from which I will update my values. Nothing yet, anyone have an idea about what is going on? - I never thought about how easy/difficult it might be for them to update from auctions that are not tied into their software. Also, I am a bit surprised at how few nice cards have come up after the auction. I thought the prices might loosen up some gems.
Also, I am a bit surprised at how few nice cards have come up after the auction. I thought the prices might loosen up some gems.
I agree. Except for the same 200-300 Mini examples over and over again and a few odds and ends, there's not much happening out there. Collectors are holding onto what they have, and there are not many new 8+ raw Minis being graded and listed for sale. That Heritage auction a few weeks ago was the Mini highlight of the summer, if not the year.
I've been scouring eBay and card shows for months now for quality raw - nothing, zilch. It's slim pickings, and I don't see that changing any time soon. Building an 8+ set is as difficult as I've ever seen it.
I picked up half a dozen Mini upgrades for my set from the Heritage Auction over the last week or so. They should be arriving soon. That's just about the only decent action I've seen over the last month and a half.
Was impressed by how quick and fast the whole process of purchasing from Heritage turned out to be~as easy as ebay!

Well my old Rice PSA 9 that someone got bumped to a 10 is up on the blocks with PWCC. Will be curious to see where this one ends. You can see the card is a tad short in the scans.
I picked up a bunch of nice 9's from the HA including the Ryan and Schmidt. Will let anyone interested know how they look in hand. I agree with everyone that Mini's are just super tough to find available for auction so felt compelled to jump on a bunch of them at Heritage as it might be a while before we see cards that look that strong come up again.
Anyone here pick up the Aaron PSA 10?

Seeing how there are no 10s, those 9s are among the best you'll find! Nice pick ups. I was going to go heavy into both those cards, but I was drawn off because peeps were killing me on the pop 1 psa10 commons...between 1-1.5K each was a budget buster. BTW the interesting thing about the Ryan and Schmidt is that the really nice 9s like the ones you picked up go for a high price. Then, invariably, a couple of the short Schmidts (6 known shorts) or Ryans (4 known shorts) pop up and bring the VCP back down. I have wondered what low pop star 9 will break a thousand (outside of the Ryan of course). IMO the Schmidt or the B. Robinson might be first with the Carew an outside possibility. The crazy star 9s are the Jackson and Winfield where I believe that 1/2 of the graded 9s are cut! There have been VERY few yellow/red stars graded 9 in the past 5 years...I think all the remaining open don't have them in gradable condition. (i.e. Morgan, Bench) - minis are always interesting...

MM what did you get out of the Heritage? >>
As much as I love picking up and collecting the nice minis, it's really frustrating that there are so many short cut minis in 9 holders, as it muddys the water and gives an inaccurate price on the market. Thankfully most of the mini collectors are well informed and know the difference. Thanks fir the positive feedback MM and congrats on the Aaron 10,
Does anyone know what psa's official stance is if someone subbed a short mini today. Are they still holdering them or would they accurately give it back as trimmed and not holder it?
The Clockwork Angel Collection...brought to you by Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and Chase TheClockworkAngelCollection
Most naturally short cards from the pack are sent back as minsizereq, though some still get through. That is not the same as trimmed, though (or cards from cut card cases, which are also typically slightly shorter than pack pulled cards).
Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
<< <i>Ryan, was the card shorter in the holder when you owned as a PSA 9? >>
It was the same.
When I first graded the card after cracking out of a BVG 9, it came back EOT, not min size. I submitted it again and it landed in a 9 holder. It measures just at 80 mm if I remember correctly, where it should be about 80.5 mm. That measurement and this color combo makes me think this could be trimmed or sheet cut.
It's still a beautiful card, but I chose to keep a different 9 in my set and sold this one.

Thanks Steve, the online version of the profile includes photo's of my wife and I and another with my son's at a Brewer game in which Sal Bando just happened to be at and sitting in the next section from us. Was a pretty special day. We get to the park early, after all they were playing the A's in an inter-league game. Suddenly I see this familiar guy walking toward the A's dugout. I say to myself, that's Sal Bando! So I yell out hay Sal how's it going? He looks and waves with a smile. I tell my kids about him being a 3 time World Series Champ. He goes over the rail and into the A's dugout. Later he sits in a seat close by, so we go over to get the picture with him, he was very kind about letting that happen. The other bonus that game, both my boys got foul balls! 😜 I had given PSA a picture of my boys holding the foul balls, but it didn't make it past the editors. Also, the SMR hard copy won't have the photo's of my wife & I or the picture of my boys & I with Sal Bando. They apologized for forgetting to include them. I was just thrilled PSA had Kevin Glew call me for the interview and the profile was used. Everyone can still go online and find the missing photo's should they want to . Kevin did a great job writing the profile and the 1975 Topps Mini's get some great exposure! It's all good 😃
Thanks Tony! I could only offer a limited number of photo's and wanted to be sure I picked some of the very tough commons but obviously have some of the star power in there as well. I know not to many people had ever seen the Rod Carew example as I picked that up outside of any auction.
+2. Great job, T. Allan! Very nice cards, as well. I especially like the Bench 260. I remember spotting that same card on eBay a minute or two after it was listed and thought what a great deal for $1,100 or $1,200 or whatever it was around those amounts. I believe you nailed it within no more than 15 minutes of it being listed. That was a steal of a deal, even back then around 2010 or so!
Thanks Indy! Sometimes luck is a major factor in picking up a nice card. When I came across that Bench PSA 10 I maybe thought about it 3.5 seconds and hit the Buy It Now! At $1,200, I couldn't complete the transaction any faster given a 2nd try, lol.

DOH! What memories! I remember clearly that I missed that SOB by about 20 minutes lol...that one hurt as the Bench is one of my favorite cards from the set. Is there a link to the article? I don't believe I receive SMR; I would love to read it.
Nice cards Ryan! Yount is a nice card. While tantalizingly close to a PSA 9 if centering issue was only top to bottom or only side to side. Unfortunately multiple centering issues likely will keep it an 8. Congrats on the 10's!
I would still sub the Yount again. It looks no worse to me than the Stargell (or the Grief, for that matter) in your scan, which received a 9. Both the Stargell and Yount are really nice, standout examples by my eye.
I don't think the Miller has a chance at a 9. The printing looks too washed out to me - it just doesn't have that striking look that I would expect to see with a 9, at least in your latest scan. Relative to other Miller examples, it's a very nice card, but they generally don't grade that way (i.e., the cards are graded against the general standards, not against a standalone one for a particular card).
The one card in your scan that is a 9 that I think is really well printed/produced is the Stennett. That's one that I think could squeeze into a 10 holder on review. That card is stunning (richly colored, well-centered - at least on front, and a clear photo of the player). That card has the "wow" factor going for it.
Edited to add: I just noticed something on the Yount - is the left, thin, white border yellowed a bit? It doesn't look as bright as the right border, although it could be the result of the scanning process. If the left border is indeed yellowed a bit, I could see that holding it back to an 8 (if a grader notices it, of course).
Okay two topics. TOPIC I: First, MM I greatly appreciated reading the article and WOW I loved looking at some of your 10 star power. To be honest, I feel you have been hiding these cards too long That Gibson is special as is the Carew and Bench (sigh), however, it was great seeing that Perry 10 (such a tough card)...did you win the Aaron 10? Second, dude you look NOTHING like I thought you would. Third, your set is worthy of truly being a HOF'er. I am reminded of a rambling post from the old thread where I stated that, at some point, one of the more recent sets will become highly iconic. Collectors can only focus on the Cobb/Ruth and Mantle/Mays/Koufax era until we realize that there is a next generation of baseball Ryan/Rose/Jackson and then Brett/Yount/Schmidt...IMO there can only be two possible sets in this era that would be the equivalent of the 1952/1957 topps = 1971 black beauties and 1975. I think that the 1975 topps regular set is just too common to ever be iconic - so I have always thought at some point the mini would reign supreme because of both rarity and the fact that it captures so many of the stars from Ryan/Rose to Brett/Schmidt. Alas, after collecting this set for so many years...I am 100% resigned to the fact that this set will ALWAYs be relegated to being collected by a very narrow but passionate bunch. I have told the story of why I love this set from my childhood - and most of the devoted mini collectors have similar stories. Again, thanks for the article - great read.
Ryan, I am with MM on the Yount...it is just not centered enough to reach a 9 and they are more strict with the high profile cards in this regard it seems. Also, I agree with Nick on that Stennett! WOW what a beautiful card. Finally, it is a great Grief, but to be honest the Grief that Tony stole from me might be, by far, the best example in existence. That one is special.
TOPIC 2: Get on the silver train! NOTE: The time to own physical precious metals (silver) is NOW! I have been studying the markets like a hawk and I am letting you guys know that the physical market for silver is close to freezing up. When this finally breaks, you will have a very hard time even buying any. Paper will be worthless - right now there are over 200 paper trades of Gold for every physical ounce held at COMEX...200 plus to 1! I have written about the coming financial collapse several times, and pointed toward the end of this year. I hope I am wrong, but it doesn't look good (follow Deutschebank, when that bank goes...the dominoes start to fall) EDIT: Precious metals are just like minis...if you can't hold it you don't own it!
Henry, I'm sitting on a stack of circulated silver quarters and halves. I hope you are correct, lol..
MM, truly a legendary set. Congrats on the recognition.
Ryan, you are the ripper with the golden touch, my friend!

Glad you enjoyed the profile Henry. There has been another pic of me if you click into the Hall of Fame. It's been there for years. No I wasn't high bidder on the PSA 10 of #660 Aaron.
After the comments about the Stennett I spent some time today going through the rest of the sub looking for any other potential "10s" hiding in 9 slabs. Here's 4 more that I pulled that I feel are deserving of the higher grade.
Thoughts on the 4 below? I might end up sending a few in for a review later this month.
I woukld try the Hernandez RC and the Grieve. DeMola is a bit low T/B and Hassler has a slight tilt. Not distracting but enough to preclude a bump, imo.
I do think the odds are a bit longer with cards very recently graded. Good luck!

After a long wait, I finally had my "mini review" sub pop today. I sent in 10 cards that I felt deserved a higher grade, and fortunately the graders agreed with me on 3 of them. Here's the results, bumps in bold. I had one non-mini included in the review.

PM sent on the Hendrick, too.

Here's a few more cards from these same packs. Over all really nice centering on over half the cards I pulled these are some I think have a chance at 10 with a 9 for the Miller.

<< <i>I picked up a bunch of nice 9's from the HA including the Ryan and Schmidt. Will let anyone interested know how they look in hand. I agree with everyone that Mini's are just super tough to find available for auction so felt compelled to jump on a bunch of them at Heritage as it might be a while before we see cards that look that strong come up again.

<< <i>Ryan, was the card shorter in the holder when you owned as a PSA 9? >>
I am assuming yes because it got bumped on a review?
I am almost positive PSA made the well bigger so it may just look short because of that?

As much as I love picking up and collecting the nice minis, it's really frustrating that there are so many short cut minis in 9 holders, as it muddys the water and gives an inaccurate price on the market. Thankfully most of the mini collectors are well informed and know the difference. Thanks fir the positive feedback MM and congrats on the Aaron 10,
Does anyone know what psa's official stance is if someone subbed a short mini today. Are they still holdering them or would they accurately give it back as trimmed and not holder it?

<< <i>Ryan, was the card shorter in the holder when you owned as a PSA 9? >>
It was the same.
When I first graded the card after cracking out of a BVG 9, it came back EOT, not min size. I submitted it again and it landed in a 9 holder. It measures just at 80 mm if I remember correctly, where it should be about 80.5 mm. That measurement and this color combo makes me think this could be trimmed or sheet cut.
It's still a beautiful card, but I chose to keep a different 9 in my set and sold this one.

That is San Frantastic!! Way to go Ryan! 😎
Nice article in the new SMR about you and your collection
Steve
Minimaster,
Thanks for sharing photos of those beauties...very nice article. It's awesome seeing the "mini set" get some well deserved publicity!
Well done,
TS
And I can't wait to read the 75 mini article. Haven't gotten there yet.
<< <i>Thanks Indy! >>

TOPIC I:
First, MM I greatly appreciated reading the article and WOW I loved looking at some of your 10 star power.
I hope I am wrong, but it doesn't look good (follow Deutschebank, when that bank goes...the dominoes start to fall)
EDIT: Precious metals are just like minis...if you can't hold it you don't own it!
MM, truly a legendary set. Congrats on the recognition.
Ryan, you are the ripper with the golden touch, my friend!

Good luck!
