If I were in the card business and not a private collector I would buy minis now like crazy. When the next wave of aggressive high-end collector comes into the set, like the few of us who divested to pursue other cards used to be-- and they will come-- these cards for sale now will be going up in price from whatever they hammer for now.

    I second that Matthew!

The results of the high end set break that ended tonight would seem to support the notion as well. Those were some of the highest Mint 9 prices I've seen in my 16 months of mini hounding. I felt like a bottom feeder scooping up the economical "leftovers", but was happy nonetheless with a handful of gems and a slew of beautiful 9's to add to my set.

On another note, is it safe to say at this point that the quantity of high end graded product entering the market has passed its peak? I was not in the hobby at the time of the Conlon sale, but it sure seems that the population growth of minis has slowed steadily all year long after burgeoning last year.

    Yeah, um... wow...

Grats to Eric for doing really well. I was afraid he was going to get hurt on the sale with that volume at this time. PWCC did a great job and while it was aggravating spending all day in front of a pc, it was done brilliantly for great money overall imho.
It would be interesting to know the aggregate of the sale.

Grats to Henry, whose top sell has to be well over 9.2 by now and I'd bet he has a second at or over 9 now.

Grats to everyone else who bought.

I bid on every card that was a numerical upgrade to my set or a better example of my own 9. I LOST 288 auctions and won 14. Looking at my bill this morning, I am kind of glad maybe that I didn't win more.

Best bargain, psa 9 Hunter for 37 ish. Card I am happiest to own - psa 9 Grief. Best GPA add, the psa 10 194 Mantle.

I was hoping to win back my Burleson, but it went really strongly at close to 800 and the jaw dropper of the day has to be the Jesus Alou at 777 as a 7 pop. Numbers anyone?

I thought some of the low pop PSA 10s went low -- what do you all think?
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

I don't normally chase PSA 10 minis for auction, but won a pop 8 PSA 10 for $89 and a pop 6 for $125, which I couldn't pass up. Like Jim, I lost a ton
of auctions, too, but wound up winning the 2 10s, 4 9s and the 8.5 NL Championship card ($22) for a shade over $300 altogether. Eric ought to
send a thank you note to Henry--if it weren't for him a LOT of those low pop 9s and PSA 10s would have gone for a lot less.

Without trying to reopen an old sub-thread about what constitutes a "low pop", I maintain the belief that any Gem 10 mini for less than $100 is a pretty fair deal -- with the possible exception of #522 Sutherland (the only mini with a double digit population of Gem Mint).

615 has a high pop over 10 as well.

There were some deals to be had, but given the scope, I think sales were much stronger than I would have expected. I won 10 10s and 4 9s (grief, montenez, coggins and Hunter).

Yea, that was one heck of a sale!...I had 240 bids, won 5, scrapping the very bottom, but I was really happy to get them..You just don't see a break like that much anymore...when I first started collecting the mini's a couple of years ago, it seemed quite easy to get them, now I have to be pretty selective...was really happy to snag the AL champ for my set...

    Congrats on your pickups everyone!

I threw in a few half-hearted bids, mostly at about a dozen of the 9's that I thought might fly under the radar at or under 10 bucks. A number of 9's in my set, including the Santo and Royals team, were picked up in this fashion in the past. At this point, I'm primarily targeting 8's and 8.5's that upgrade my 7's and 7.5's.

Has anyone summed up the final bids to see what the set ended up going for?

    547 listings ended September 8th.

Using rounded, full dollar amounts I get $62,192

No way am I suggesting that is 100% accurate, as I may have added a couple twice, or forgot one...but you get the gist.

Hey folks, I'm new to the forums, but have been collecting mini's for many years, I've just decided to start getting them graded by PSA, and I've listed 48 of them on ebay, please feel free to have a look.
They range from mostly 7's and 8's, and everything from stars to checklists.

    Thanks,

Well folks, I have a rare treat for you: Thoughts from an old friend and the horse's mouth so to speak on the most amazing mini day since the conlon auction:

Hello all. It was probably a made for TV comedy/tragedy. Three idiot men bidding cards up on each other with little hope for future liquidity! We were sitting there cursing each other out for over 8 hours I am sure. I never thought that I would be punished as severely as I was. About 1/3 of the way in I realized that at the rate we were going I was going to blast through my budget (about 43K) about 2/3s of the way through the auction. What was killing me was all the low/moderate pop 9s that I had bid on (pops between 7-14). I thought those would go at a rock bottom price but I was getting crushed. Then I realized that it was adding up at an incredible pace! – About 1/3 of the way in I was thinking WTF kind of alternate reality am I in? I panicked a bit and regrettably lost out on several 10s like the MVP Mantle and Bench. There were certain cards (Like MattyC mentioned the full sized low pop 9s) that I would not lose at any price – I was fine paying over 700 for the Blyleven, the Alou (most of those 7 9s are incredibly short), the Stanley, the Burleson, and the Kusick etc. I had a huge bid on the Rogers (pop 3) and the Lolich (pop 5 but at least 2 are way short) and was glad that I wasn’t bid up on those…I was not surprised at paying so high for certain hard to find stars (got outbid on the Fingers) – over 400 for the Garvey was expected, but I was amazed that the F. Robinson went for almost 300! There are only 20 9s and I bet a minimum 6-8 are obvious cut cards. I think my best deal was the 140 for the Hernandez rookie…many of the current 9s are very short and there are only 23 listed. I ended up about 40K lighter but it’s okay, I hear that community colleges are the new ivy league (at least that is what I will now tell my sons). As I mentioned before, given my prediction of the population of true sized 9s (approx 20% below the reported pop and higher for certain color combos), the minis are undervalued. But INDY has the most astute observation – the market may be commensurate with the lower population since many collectors just choose to focus on the regular sized cards. So the potential 1975 market may be split 2/3 reg and 1/3 mini. I think my first set is indeed well north of 9.2 and my 2nd set is probably over 9 as Jim surmised. That is after removing all shorts from my collection. It was a blast and probably a once in a lifetime mini auction - unless MM decides to blow up his set. I was aging in dog years for sure that day. The words "budget" and "43K" are pretty much mutually exclusive, imo. lol..

Does anyone care to explain why Henry doesn't post here anymore himself? I think he can handle the PSA membership fee. Is he protesting? I miss his contribution to this and the old thread.

Does anybody have an opinion on BBCE's new boxes of minis for sale? Case number is 212351. Thanks.

Same batch as the infamous board break several years ago and same as the recent boxes they sold from the last case.

Interestingly, of the twelve sealed conlon cases, nine of them were 212351. The other three were 122851,230951 and 222253. You wonder if Conlon knew what was in the 212351s and left them sealed. On the other hand, the open case lot that Duncan bought and sold many boxes here, yielded beautiful cards and that lot had either none or one 212351 (the picture of one case is hidden).

Just got these back from PSA today after about 40 business days...I felt the grading was pretty tough overall and got squeezed on a lot of 8s, but I am very pleased about the PSA 10 Scott which is a 1/1, and some tougher 9s like Campy, Harrison and Powell, among a couple of others. Really thought the '57 MVP Aaron and Mantle card was a straight 9 but got the 8.5 which is a bit like kissing your sister, I suppose, lol..I have no idea what I missed on the PSA 4 Carter, lol (no wrinkle that I could see)...that is the lowest grade I ever got on a pack fresh mini.

Thanks Tony & Nick! If anyone is interested, I'm also selling a number of cards from this sub over on the B/S/T board. All the cards are literally
pack fresh, having been pulled from wax by me and self-submitted to PSA..

Got poppage today on a large order. I had a batch of minis in this one, primarily from a nm+ set I bought from Kruk. I had no major expectations as these were not pack fresh cards. That said, there were a couple of very nice hits, including a PSA 9 Schmidt, Simmons, Mason, Ryan 312 and Hutton (which I needed for my set). A bunch of tougher 8s too like Ryan 5, Reitz, Russell, Geronimo, Enzo, Lockwood, Johnson...

On a frustrating note, I will have to reach out to PSA on this one, I cracked a bunch of 80s donruss factory sets and every card came back min size, which is a flat out mistake. All donruss factory are known to be slightly smaller and are graded all the time. Factory sets would be worthless otherwise. Anway, as usual, most of this will wind up on the bay, so if you have a need, feel free to pm me first:

Some nice cards the Duff-I also just had an order of mostly mini's pop. I was very careful and used a loupe on every single card as well as a magnifying glass. The results were good with lot's of nines, most of them relatively high pops already.

Some nice solid poppage there1 The Schmidt is a tough one and that run of 9s at the end of the sub is impresive!

Killer sub. Took a really great eye to hit all of those 9s. While still quite an accomplishment, once upon a time two PSA 9s on the 561 A's team on the same order would have been unthinkable.

they were from a "high grade raw part set" that was never finished on the bay. 95 times out of. 100 that is code for. the leftovers of. cherry picked set. i was lucky and it really was a set builders unmolested part set. still have 3-400 nice cards left from it.

I thought I would check in with everyone and give this thread a bump. Currently, I'm working on upgrading the 7's in my registry set to 8's. Due to the expense, and my somewhat limited budget, I'm prioritizing the upgrades by taking into consideration how well I think the 7's in my set present. This weekend, I finally found an upgrade to the Rader #31 in my set. The one I have currently in a 7 has an ugly yellow stripe across the top that just bugs the heck out of me every time I looked at it. It's replacement that has been my top priority for a while now. I was happy to pick the one up on eBay last night; I'd been drooling over its eBay photo daily all last week. I also picked up a replacement Lolich #245 in an 8. It's not a number upgrade, but it does upgrade the one I currently have in that the new one is within current size standards (the older one that's been in my set is a tad below the current standards).

I also went to a local bi-monthly card show on Saturday. I was able to pick up around 45 cards for the rebuild of my raw set. I also found a Dave Chalk #64 that has a good chance at an 8, so it will go out with my next sub. This will be my second try at an 8. This Friday, I'll be attending the Collector's Showcase Chantilly Show. I'll be hunting for upgrades to the 7's in my registry set as well as an upgrade to the undersized Chuck Taylor #58 in my set.

    Take care,

    Nick

Anyone else ever experience something similar?

About four weeks ago, my registered set slipped to 99.85% complete. Since the only activity this set receives is occasional upgrades and is not subject to any sales or trades, I found this interesting. Further review showed that my #73 JR Richard card was no longer in active inventory. My first attempt to clear this situation was to completely delete the item, then try to add it again. When doing so, it was promptly deposited into "Inventory not matching current sets".

At this point I emailed the concern to PSA and received a response from Cosetta. She stated that, according to PSA records, that card was autographed and PSA/DNA certified. Over one week ago, I sent front/back pics of the card and have not heard back yet (and I'm still at 99.85%).

Earlier this summer, as I mentioned on this board, my set was automatically retired. Customer service told me it was because I did not respond to three email requests to remove a card (that I have never seen or owned) from my inventory. While I consistently receive communication from PSA, I never received any asking for removal.

Perhaps both of these situations fall into the 'computer glitch' classification? Who else here has had random changes made to your registered sets without your knowledge?

I have been unable to add the last card to my set for some time. I have the card, but it keeps associating with a retired set, even after deleting it and adding it back. I have also asked for help and am waiting.

I also have a #320 Pete Rose that is not PSA/DNA, that PSA shows as such. I have 2 of the cards.........so the other is listed in my set. I haven't contacted PSA about it yet.

So what's the deal with that amazing set being broken by PWCC?

Some serious low pop cards in there-- and they look to be selling for cheap at the moment. Will they jump at the end, or are there just not enough big sharks into the set these days to drive the prices to previous levels? That type of cyclical pricing can happen with sets that don't have hundreds or even tens building high-high-end sets, but we haven't seen the cycle turn for a long time with these.

Still waiting for someone to open the magic box and pull some true PSA 10 Ryans, Schmidts, and Winfields!

Amazing how low the pops on these remain after all thee years. Remember when the Conlon collection sold and so many thought there'd be 10 Claudells in PSA 9 as a result? Seems pretty funny in hindsight. I really think the SMR should do an article on how the pops of these cards have remained so relatively low over the years.

Less than ideal time to be listing a high end set with lots of east coast collectors focused on hurricane recovery. If I were consignor I'd ask to wait a bit though there are still over 4 days remaining. The toughest low pops are still beasts but otoh there are plenty of other cards that were considered super tough that are now just sort of tough.

Just got power back tonight after 6 miserable days, but feel blessed that I (and the house) are still in one piece.

Hang in there, Jim! Hope you get power back soon!

When Hurrican Ivan hit us....we didn't get power back for 11 days at my house. I've been thru 20 hurricanes, at least, here in Florida......Ivan was the worst. Wishing you a speedy recovery up there!

If tonight's results do not confirm to anyone that the passion is still there for this set, then I don't know what kind of proof it will take.

Last night's prices were that strong without me getting the chance to bid to boot. My son was at his terrible two worst and I wound up forgetting the auctions. I did place a number of early bids, all losers, but would have liked to take a crack at a bunch. 1,100 for the Montague. I have to say, I got very good money for 20 cards or so a few months back, enough to sell cards out of my set. That said, they buyer (before commission anyway) actually made money on the resales. I'm happy for all around.

No question, quality minis remain gold. The only card that really shocked me was the Randle. I figured a minimum of $500 there. The Cruz was much less than the last as well.
