I remember when the East had a blackout in 2003 or 2004. It was fun. We cooked corn and steak on the grill. I finished putting up chair rail in the diningroom with a homemade mitrebox and claw hammer.
well between crashing space junk, solar flares, earthquakes, crazy weather/drought/fires/tornadoes, possible dark stars, comet trails, blah blah blah ..... this is a picnic ----- Let's just hope PM's don't crash the party.

For the record I'm not a SHTF subscriber in the Mad Maxx sort of way. I would prefer to hear Baley babble on forever then then to have harriers and zombies nipping at my heels. Zombies scare the crap out of me. I will be whipping hunks of gold and silver at them to make my getaway. I believe I can out out run zombies as they are sort of slow. I just need to remember not to look back while I'm running. That always seems to be the downfall of many in the movies as they trip over an old tree root or beer bottle.

While I understand why people like to poke fun of survivalists, at the same time though there's nothing wrong with preparing for rough times. Take food for example. Up until 100 years ago humans have always stored as much food as they could. Yet today people make fun of preppers for keeping 6 months worth of food on hand. That doesn't make sense to me... As for inflation, you simply have to be kidding yourself if you think there's no risk of hyper-inflation. If the money supply chart above doesn't at least make you consider the possibilities of inflation, than I don't know what to tell you. Perhaps the debt chart will at least make you consider the possibility:
Why wouldn't a person allocate at least a small portion of their savings in precious metals purchased at melt given the above?
The closest we'll ever see to a SHTF scenario is going to be localized disasters such as hurricanes and earthquakes. In such cases silver dimes and gold eagles will mean nothing. In these situations actual paper money, coin dollars, and canned food, bottled water will come in most handy. The power will be down so paperless transactions will be shut down for awhile. I live almost on the New Madrid fault line and FEMA has stated that, in the event of a major earthquake, it would take them approximately 3 weeks before they could get into deep southern IL with assistance. That would definitely leave a lot of people without food after only 2-3 days. This is what causes the looting like what you saw in New Orleans. In this case a well stocked pantry and being armed is the best option. The people on welfare that keep little food in the house and shop for food daily at convenience stores will be on the prowl.
In conclusion, PMs are an investment tool. A silver dime or quarter is just a dime and quarter to the overwhelming majority of people.
70% of all real estate sales in South Fla are foreclosures or short sales. Ever hear anything like that before? The new mantra is "rent". "Renting" is better than owning. This is from the same types that have not owned a car prolly and can't muster even a few grand for a used one.

Some may argue that the dollar has already collapsed albeit via a slow drip over the past 80 years or so losing 95% of it's purchasing power. No one notices when it's done over time. Drip, drip, drip
It is what it is.
I'm not a buyer of a TSHTF scenerio ever happening. I hope I'm right. I'm prepared for one though I THINK, but I doubt I will have thought of everything as there is no way to know for sure what shape or form SHTF will come in. My advise, enjoy life, kiss your kids, pet your wife and take the dog to a lot of dinners and movies and tell those that you cherish, " I love you"...........often. Hope for the best and prepare yourself and your family for rough times. There is no defense for harriers so why worry about it.

So the dollar has lost 90% of its value since the FED came into existence. So in 100 years what will 90% of today remaining 10% be. This can only go on for so long than what? Are we looking at million dollar salaries for the middle class in the next 20-30 years?

IMHO there isn't much one can do about a big SHTF scenario short of becoming a survivalist and stocking MRE's and ammo, that's not for me. I like to look at the glass as half full. However, these are perilous times and I think one should diversify his assets as much as possible to protect against more likely events, inflation being my main concern.

Actually those saying they have this and that wouldn't be any better off either. They'd lock down the cities and you'd have people wondering around the country side. I don't care what kind of fire power you have but it better be a shovel since you couldn't hold it against a small group much less a large one. How many ever watch westerns? Ever see how the Indians got the settlers out of their homes? There's a new horseless carriage out there you just set it on fire and put it in drive. It comes to that and you'd better be able to live off the land or go to a FEMA camp.
My family spent 18 days (in 5 to 7 day chunks) without power during the 2004 hurricane season here in Florida. Without a doubt having enough food, water, and cash on hand was a huge plus. Most retail stores would not open without power, but even the ones with power did not have their credit card service running and I witnessed MANY people b1tch and moan about not having cash.

I didn't mean to not be prepared for a short term crisis. We had the '99 ice storm as a wake up call and we are now prepared to go at least a month without electricity, stores etc.
So, in that respect, it's just like prision (or being lost in wilderness?)
Cigarettes and whisky, bic lighters and razor blades, bottled water and canned or pouched food, and maybe a good stout stick of wood, would get you through a few days at least?
How about paper cash money? Any disaster witnesses/participants that can comment on the relative usefullness of folding money versus gold coins in a real-life short to med. term disaster?
