If Subaru's were the car most entered in amateur auto races across the country, that would not be a statistic as much as a fact. Statistics have their greatest usefulness and impact when absolute measurements are not feasible and sampling techniques are therefore necessary.
"What is the most popular (with males) breast shape/size?" cannot be easily "measured" but using a representative population of males one could come up with a statistical estimate that would be accurate to +/- some percentage depending on sample size and other parameters. If the study modalities included measurements of male turgor, "objectivity" would be "enhanced". . .
Gary's PCGS Registry Set numbers are statements of fact and those facts might indeed be the best single measure we have of the relative popularity of the different Dollar Coin Series.

I think it would be interesting to see the dollar value required to get into the top 10 in each division. I also think people who are competitive tend not to enter competitions they know they won't be competitive in.

By definition high numbers means popular
Let's not be confused with the reasons WHY something can be popular
GrandAm
I remember when they first came out, they were not popular then and certainly not popular now.
Sounds like you have the wikidoodle dictiionary! "It means whatever I say it means."
Yes, actually I do have that I use to use it around the house with my wife
Funny thing is she RAN AWAY not sure why???

<< <i>GrandAm, I have to ask...............What is your personal reason for collecting Ike's? >>
Well, probably the same reason that you collect dimes, I LIKE IKE'S
A high grade IKE is a truly BEAUTIFUL coin And I am not kidding on this statement.
GrandAm
GrandAm...........Does this mean you like the design of the Ike better than the Early and Seated and Morgan and Peace Dollars???

<< <i>GrandAm...........Does this mean you like the design of the Ike better than the Early and Seated and Morgan and Peace Dollars??? >>
Yes
I have a few Trade Dollars and Seated Dollars. I have Morgans. I have a complete set of Peace Dollars, all PCGS MS64 or better.
GrandAm
Edited to add,,,,, OK I'll come clean The real reason that so much is that I consider the coin to be a self portrait as I am a middle aged, fat, bald guy
The reason I ask is that while I collect all dimes.........Roosevelts are my least favorite. Actually I collect them because I have to because they are part of the Complete Dime set.
I'm sure if you did a poll thread and everyone voted..........Ike's would come in 6th at best. Behind Early, Seated, Morgan, Trade and Peace Dollars.

An Ike is a far better looking coin than a morgan. The reverse of the Ike
is both impressive and beautiful despite how it came into existence. The
obverse is... ...well... ...as good as you can get for what it is.
I extremely dislike the obverse of the morgan and only partially because
it is too "busy". The reverse is nothing to get excited about.
I do prefer the bust dollar design to the Ike. The peace dollar comes in 2nd.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Even though I hate the morgan de-
sign I actually collected them years ago before they got popular. ...go figure.
<< <i>Crypto79......I agree, but what some of the top guys pay for high grade Ike's........you could buy a bunch of beautiful classic coins!!!! >>
For what some people pay foir classics you can buy a bunch of beautiful and much rarer moderns.
Ultimately the hobby is about rarity even if pricing is mostly about demand.

Exactly.
No doubt Ikes are more popular as registry sets because you can compete
in the high grades for much less money despite the fact that most Ikes are
much scarcer.
Why not like Ike.

How common does a modern have to be before you can discuss it?
How about not even one '69 quarter in MS-68?
How's a unique 1964 clad quarter?
Maybe a couple known 1975 No-S dimes...
I suppose these don't rate very high compared to an NCLT 1804 dollar that were
couterfeited by mint employees and then artificially worn so they could be smug-
gled from the mint. The five million dollar price isn't too shabby for a coin like this
with nearly three dozen known.
So you can buy dozens of rare moderns for the price of a relatively common 1804
dollar.

For the record, only 731,556,101 IKEs were produced and this includes the proofs.
As for modern rarities, there are some nice coins which were produced 40 years ago of which only a couple of examples exist. And it certainly isn;t because folks aren't looking.
As for the "Test of Time" comment by Ambro, only time will tell.

Yes, a complete date/mm set is very affordable to put together in MS/PR, but you simply cannot buy true gem sets in a Dansco for anywhere near the asking price of the linked auction, there will be many 63's and 64's in there (at least for the CuNi issues).

OHHHH NOOOOO!!!! not choice UNC's and near gems... the garbage. I think sometimes people overstate the importance of the gap between MS65-67. I think this manifests its self by the difference you would get trying to sell any superb gem raw ike vs the corresponding PCGS coin. Also I think modern fans over hype the ultragrades as a way to set their sets apart from the lowly reg gem sets. We are only talking a little luster(which is subjective) and a hidden tick or two.
IMO terms like condition rarities and like terms should be saved for coins that are all but unknown in UNC or only a few choice coins in what ever range not for coin that only have a few thousands currently graded and in-turn, over looking the millions that haven't been before the grading companies. I get tickled when a modern guy says something to the fact of "Gezzezzz you just don't know how rare these are, I had to look through like 500 MS 65's to find one MS66!!!". I come away thinking that we have very different definitions of rare and collecting goals.
Sorry "NO SUCH THING" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!>>
Well, this is an interesting and spirited thread. Please forgive the interruption but I have a candidate for modern and rare. Consider the 1972 D quarter with the high relief proof artwork type B reverse. I calculate less than 40,000 were made and I only know of a half dozen in captivity. The rest of them are out there circulating just waiting to be picked up. But after 38 years of circulation, they might be showing their age. Nevertheless, I would like to get ahold of one more in any condition.
1) While I do not agree with the title to this thread, I cannot disagree with the number of Registry sets out there.
2) My post regarding the eBay listing was not intended to trivialize non-Gem moderns, rather the auction listed is more than likely misleading, advertising GEM BU's for the non-Proofs. I don't see what a misleading auction for a raw set has to do with the popularity of PCGS Registry sets.
Further, I have no plans or desires to own top-pops, modern or otherwise.
Collect what you like.
