Drop test is just a simple way or means to hear if coin sounds like copper... if the coin is copper it has a distict ring or ding to it.
All 3 coins sounded close to the same which sounded like copper... many people do this to see that it is not steel or pewter or
    some other alloy...

    << <i>Thanks Gfourdriver I'll keep that in mind... :-)

Can anyone tell me what the weight range would need to be of the "starred reverse"? Also, is it different from the
    normal 1794 Large Cents?

By the way I did a drop test of the 3 1794 coins I have... all three sounded sililar to one another... (which I know still
doesn't say the one that shows at beginning of this thread is a real one... but had someone ask me to try it... :-)
Again Thanks for the help all...

    shasta7 >>

Don't know about a range of weight but CoinFacts says 13.48 grams, 28mm dia., the same as other 1794 large cents.

Have you submitted it yet? Can you tell we're a little anxious?

I think just submitting it for grading would be easier on the coin ! image

Weight and planchet thickness can vary greatly among 1794 cents. Perhaps someone who has handled a lot of them can give you an idea if they are all approximately he same...oh wait, there probably isn't anyone who has handled a lot of them. --Jerry

    update please !!!
  • Would like members thoughts regarding the slabbing of the 1794 Lg Cent Starred Rev at beginning of this thread...

If PCGS determines the coin is genuine... will they grade & slab the coin even though
the coin has the planchet flaw on both sides? Will they just tell me the coin is damaged
    & refuse to grade it?

    ==========================================================================
crypto79... Update: I sent the coin in over a week ago by registered & insured mail. I just got
a tracking message saying that PCGS just got the coin... Paul G Sr Staff Writer from Coin World just told
me he spoke to Pete Smith at the Boston ANA show & he saw the pictures of the coin & is convinced the
coin is genuine... another expert on these type coins said that if it isn't real it has to be the best counterfeit
coin ever... this is all for now...

Thanks in adv for your input...

It is my understanding that PCGS will slab a coin if it can be determined to be genuine.
  • notwilightnotwilight Posts: 12,864 ✭✭✭
I would say it's borderline. I think most of the issues are a planchet flaw and are mint made and thus will likely grade on such a raritie. --Jerry
  • You'll absolutely need to have it professionally authenicated. PCGS would be the choice IMO to slab as a genuine (no grade) coin. I also suggest that you consider having Bob Grellman (catalogs/grades Goldberg copper sales as McCawley-Grellman auctions) provide a sharpness and net grade the coin. Grellman grades are generally accepted at face value and carry importance for copper enthusiasts. Grellman should be able to give you an approximate sharpness and net grade from which to reasonalbly assign a value the coin.

    Nice find.

Even if PCGS doesn't grade your coin, it's worth the fees just to get it into a genuine holder. Even with major problems, a coin like this still has a very high value.

  • Regarding my Order I sent to PCGS:

Can someone tell me what it means when it says - Receive_Hold

I understand the Receive part... (simply means they got my package & entered the order into their system)
but why does it say HOLD? Is this normal as this is my first time sending a coin to PCGS...

Yes and I suspect the PCGS brass will take their time(damn them, although understandable) before declaring it real. They will consult more than just the normal grader & I still can't wait!!!
  • Hello everyone... :-) Thanks for waiting...

The verdict is in on the coin... It was authenticated by PCGS as GENUINE!! (98)

Congrats!!! What are you going to do with it---put it in an auction or in your collection? I bet Coin World would love to do an article on a discovery coin that's a famous rarity. A little publicity can only enhance the value of your coin.

Did Pete Smith or any of the other experts say how many examples are now known?

Jack Robinson 1989 Superior Galleries catalog mentions 38 known examples...recent Dan Holmes catalog states only 2 examples graded by PCGS if I remember correctly.

Sheldon, for what it's worth says in Early American Cents: ...high prices frequently paid for this variety result from fame, not rarity or condition.

Chapman book 1926 says that of the variety Dr. Maris states in 1877 It was previously unknown.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  • Notwilight,
As far as the attribution... I was told the Slab would say "Genuine" - Surface Damage... (98), the most important
thing is that it is was deemed as "Genuine". I got an e-mail saying it was shipped out so it's on the way back. As
far as exactly what is on the slab I need to wait & see... will update once I have it in hand.

    PerryHall,
I still haven't decided yet what to do as far as selling it or hanging on to it... Regarding Coin World... I already have
been contacted by them & was told they want to do a story. I have many great people who have expert experience
with these types of coins offering their help. It is great & I do appreciate their help. I also agree the story would help
    get the coin known...

    Okracer,
No have not yet spoke with Pete Smith... sent him a message & just waiting on a reply from him. I do not know how
    many examples are now known.

    RTS,
I think as far as what Shelton said... it may been true at that time but things are different today... as far as price for a rare
coin such as this it will depend who is interested at the time it goes up for sale. As my mom always told me, Something for sale is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it!

    BigMoose,
Yes, you did say it was going to be determined REAL... Thank you for making a good call... :-)

    Kranky,
I agree with you!! & it just proves there are coins still out there yet to be discovered.

I thank everyone for their comments, posts, input or thoughts... it means alot to me.

    Hey, congratulations! you wrote earlier...

as far as purchasing it as a starred rev... it was from a collection whose dad passed away & asked
me to buy the coins... I gave the seller $25.00 for the coin

had you noticed the stars at the time of purchase? you must have looked at the coin to be able to make an offer at all, did you see them then?

Have you shared the good news with the widow and orphans?

    Baley,

NO... I did not know the coin had stars prior to buying the coin... as I never even thought to look for them.
I had the coin awhile & just put it away till I had time to go through them with a scope... The fathers son is
well aware of the situation as he was a long time friend whom I known for years.

    Thank you Lee & crazyhounddog...

Lee, there was no reason given & I was NOT told as to why it was coded 98... maybe once I have the coin back
there will be an explanation... (I said maybe... lol)

I was told from a person who is very familar with these type coins that it didn't surprise him that PCGS said that.
He thought from looking at the pictures that the planchet was flawed prior to being struck... he also said this kind
of variety is well known to have bad planchets & the die was bad from the start... reason there are NOT many High Grade
coins left... these coins were weakly struck & almost all had bad reverses... I keep getting people asking how many stars
that are on the coin... as most coins like this don't have many. On this coin there are 30-40+ stars that show...

He thinks along with a few other experts that even with the planchet flaw that the coin is one of the better ones remaining.
As far as a grade... some gave me their opinions & it really surprised me in a good way... maybe others here can chime in with
their thoughts - should be interesting what others have to say. Those experienced with early coppers told me that the flaw
makes this coin unique & a more interesting coin to collectors of early coppers... none of them can believe how nice the obv is.

I checked the tracking number... the coin is at my post office... so I will get it in the morning... :-) I will then see what
    it says on the slab...

  • Ok just got the coin back from PCGS...

Many people been asking what was put on the slab. Here is exactly what is marked on the slab...

    On the obv(front) is reads:

    1794 1C
    PCGS Genuine
    Surface Damage
    S-48 starred Reverse
    35705.98/18140838

    On the Reverse it reads:

    (PCGS Image)
    GENUINE NOT GRADABLE

If you have any thoughts or feel like posting feel free... I thank all who already have & for all those who
gave their help & suggestions!! I will try to take a few pictures of the slab later today & post them

Good to hear it was deemed genuine starred reverse. The 98 indicates (as we all knew) environmental damage. Congratulations...

  • Hello everyone... I told everyone I would keep them posted on any news on the 1794 coin...

I got a message from Paul at Coin World Mag... he said the article/story of the newly discovered 1794 Lg Cent 9starred rev)
is the featured story & is on the front cover of this week's magazine... hope everyone enjoys it!! I thank all who gave their help

You should get an EAC grade and then sell at a big auction ASAP( Bmore in NOV) if that is what you would like to do. The fever pitch will peak soon after the review with EAC standards combined with the coin world artical. Congrats again that was an amazing find.
