Do you have an interest in coins that are way beyond your means?

tydyetydye Posts: 3,894 ✭✭✭
I am not talking about coins that you might have to stretch for. But ones short of winning the lottery that you will probably never own. 1804 dollars, 1913 nickels or any coin 6 figures and up just don't do much for me. The ones that make my heart flutter are the ones with the right look in my tax bracket. In another thread about coins you regret selling I was immediately drawn to a NA 1853 quarter. The coins was perfect and if available I would of snagged in a heartbeat.

If you think you don't, then pay a visit to the Smithsonian and have a look at the display case with three 1804 dollars and a dozen other great coins in it. Then tell me you're uninterested. If your heart hasn't stopped, that is. One doesn't have to own them to appreciate them.

Someone occassionally posts a picture of a handful+ of the 1794 cents in high MS condition.
Yes, I would lust after those image

Pikes Peak gold, and Mormon gold come to mind. I actually know someone that would
sell me her Pikes Peak gold but I don't have the funds. She's not in any hurry, thank goodness!

I have an interest in them as a collector, but not really an interest to purchase them.

    YES!

And right now I am after a coin that will be a very big stretch for me, as it will be almost 3x more that any other coin that I have purchased. It will be a stretch but luckily the dealer has a lay away plan.

This one will be tuff, but I know I have to have it for my collection.

  • Some legendary coins have little appeal to me, such as the 1913 nickels. Some appeal to me greatly, like the 1854-S Quarter Eagles.

When I collected coins some 20+ years ago, there were plenty of coins I wanted that I could not afford unless I won the lottery. Fortunately this was one I could afford and I don't blame you for wanting one as I think the $20 Saint Gauden's 1907 High Relief is one of the most beautiful coin ever minted (IMHO)...Donato

MJ had the best comment. But reverting to coins, it's not merely those beyond our financial means that can draw our attention, but also those beyond our expertise, and those beyond our scope, that are worthwhile to seriously appreciate and contemplate. Of all human artifacts, aren't coins are the only collectible objects from thousands of years ago that are available to the individual? Viewing or handling them helps put our own place in time and history in perspective.

  • My aspirations in coins do not differ that drastically from life in general.

I want it all, and to hell with the cost. (this does not mean I can afford any of what I aspire to though.image)

The coins that remain on my want list might be within my financial means some day. I've never had any interest in the 1913 Liberty nickel, and my interest in the 1804 silver is limited to the one in the King of Siam Proof set with the original box. In other words I'm more interested in the set and its history than I am in the 1804 dollar coin. Therefore coins like would not be on my want list.

No. If there's no way I can afford them, what's the point of looking at / being interested in them? I'm not a window shopper. I don't look at Small Eagle Bust $s, I don't look at Liberty Cap Cents, MS 66 Seated $s, Gobrecht $s, etc.

  • One of my problems now is that I have stretched for too many coins that were already beyond my means. Well they must have been within my means since I bought them but I was pushing it.
