Still another from that group of signed items. Timely post - the voting for the 2010 All Star game ended at last night at midnight. This cap is signed by Gary and he added "Leading Vote Getter in 1982."
In 1982 it was the first time the All Star Game was played outside the US ~ Montreal. It must have been great for Canadians to have your hometown guy who also was the All Star MVP in 1981 getting the most votes.
Several years ago (2004) the NY Post gave away this fun Mets Amazing Greats poster --- its nice to see that Wright and Reyes have become the stars that they were predicted to be back then.
Another offering from Robert Stephen Simon a 1986 Carter and Gooden poster ~~ A friend gave me this and it was in a nice custom frame but a few years ago the glass was cracked -- didn't hurt the poster though.
Well we have reached the All Star break and during Gary's career he had a nice run of All-Star game appearances -- here are some quick stats
Played in 10 All Star games 75, 79, 80, 81, 82, 83, 84, 86, 87, 88 20 At bats 3 Runs 6 Hits 3 HRs 5 RBIs .300 AVG
Selected to start in 8 straight games 81, 82, 83, 84, 85*, 86, 87, 88 (* was injured in 1985) All Star MVP in 1981 and 1984
Below is the 1984 All Star game program I have opened it to the pages where the National and American league stars are pictured -- I still find it odd that you can cut these out and have them graded -- I guess since they are on thicker stock then the rest of the mag it falls into the "hand cut card" category
They are part of the Gary Carter Master set and are part of other stars master sets as well. I have 2 from 81 & 85
I picked this order sheet up with the toughts that I would get it signed --- over the years other items jumped ahead on the got-to-be-signed list. I do not own one of the jackets.
Need some help on the 85 --- see the wrapper which has the checklist on back -- it lists Carter at #5 and Rose at #15 but as you can see the 85 Carter is number 15 and my 2001 SCD Price Guide also has Carter at #15 was wondering if the checklist was ever corrected.
This is the most amazing thread ever, keep em coming I like lookin through all the random stuff! I will need to buy some more Will Clark collectables so I can show off my collection for a solid 365 days, I only have maybe 100 things so far.
Today starts the 2010 Hall of Fame Weekend ~ and for everyone that is going I hope you have an amazing time. 7 years ago Gary was inducted with Eddie Murray, I was there, and it was a awesome time. Over the next few days I am going to post some 2003 Hall of Fame related items.
First up is a 2003 Induction invitation package -- I had the opportunity to trade for this several years ago and until then I have never seen it before. The owner felt it needed a good home and I promised it would be very welcomed in my house.
This next item is one of my all time favorites ---- This is a copy of the actual 2003 Hall of Fame ballot sent to all the eligible BBWAA members. I contacted Jack O'Connell, who is the Secretary of the BBWAA and the one who gets to call the players when they are elected to the Hall of Fame, in January 2002 (before the results were made known) asking for a copy of the 2002 ballot and was thrilled when he sent it to me --- Ozzie Smith was the only one elected that year (and i was able to use this copy to trade for the packet above ~ the owner is a huge Ozzie Smith fan) I asked again in 2003 and he was kind enough to send it my way -- Gary was elected and I figured there are not many (if any) of these out there --- I sent it back to Mr. O'Connell and asked for his signature and was able to have Gary sign it during Hall of Fame weekend 2007. I will have Eddie Murray sign it one day.
After Hall of Fame weekend 2003 I wanted to start up a unique quest -- I started mailing out letters to all the BBWAA members who had a vote in 2003 asking them to sign my custom card if they voted for Gary. This became a bigger challenge than I thought --- there is no list of eligible BBWAA members and even if there was they would not disclose who voted for who. I was able to find about 100 writers who voted for Gary from article (the Internet is a wonderful place) and I mailed out 136 other letters to head writers in just about every paper in America and Canada -- the total letters I sent out was 236 got 72 back signed for a 30% success rate.
Here are four examples from Bill Madden (Talyor Spink Award winner ~ this year 2010) Tom Verducci (Long time SI writer) Hal McCoy (Talyor Spink Award winner ~ 2002) Ross Newhan (Talyor Spink Award winner ~ 2000)
This is nice response (in addition to the card) from Joe Goddard
Also got a few back from writers who did not vote for Gary and they explained why -- I find these unique and a fun/different part of the collection
This was a blast when it was going good but this quest has hit a brick wall --- to continue it I will need to know who is a BBWAA and if they voted in 2003 ~~~ maybe one day I will start it up again.
As a side project to the BBWAA autographs I also wanted to try and have all the returning Hall of Famers sign a custom card -- in 2003 there were 44 returning members:
Like I said before that the 2003 Hall of Fame weekend was awesome and 1 major reason was I was able to get a ticket to sit in the VIP area during the speeches. A friend of Gary's, who I have become friends with, had an extra ticket and 10 mins before the gates to the VIP area opened I got a call -- I thought the weekend was perfect and now I was sitting a few feet away from Cal Ripken, Pres. Bush Sr., Bob Costas etc... Here is the ticket!!!!!!
Some other items I picked up
The official ball
The Hall of Fame Members pin
I stumbled on the Rotary club selling mini bats out of a booth on Main Street ~ picked up a few ~ went back to get some more about 2 hours later and they were sold out.
A nice poster that was the last item I picked up before heading home.
very cool indeed!....I noted that one of the cards was signed by sportswriter, Ross Newhan whose son David played in the majors for a few years (Astros, Mets, Orioles, etc.).
Successful dealings with Wcsportscards94558, EagleEyeKid, SamsGirl214, Volver, DwayneDrain, Oaksey25, Griffins, Cardfan07, Etc.
A 1978 Matchbook with Gary on the cover --- this is all the info I have --- My 2001 SCD guide has these matchbooks listed but from 1972-1976 no info on the 1978s
Well the National starts today and I would love to be going --- Baltimore is only a few hours drive but can't get away. Over the next few day I will post some Gary Carter National (or other) related items.
First up some 2002 Donruss Diamond King cards -- would love to own all 5 but have not seen them pop up on ebay in a loooong loooong time (I have a feeling Abe, who is a fellow Carter collector, might have a few)
Its hard to make out on these cards but the 2002 National logo in embossed on the lower left corner.
PSA mislabled the 2nd card -- I will send it in one of these days --- I am not a big fan of slabbing new cards but since these were "rare" I wanted them locked up for a long time.
If any of you National attendees see some Carter items let me know
I think you have the most impressive baseball player collection I have every seen....x3-4.
Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards. Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.
Here are 2 2003 Donruss Team Heroes National cards and a 2004 Donruss Playoff National card --- not too sure about this one it is not numbered on the back and I have always wondered about the embossed logo --- not as nice as prior years - if anyone can confirm that this is a card that was given out during the National or was this a "homemade" embossed logo.

Another cap that was part of a group of signed items. Never saw this hat offered for sale anywhere before.

Here we have 2 items that Gary wore when he was helping out the Marlins early in their existence. The hat shows a ton of wear.

This is a great poster --- nice and long and was printed on thick paper stock
One of my favorite posters -- not the best condition but will upgrade this place holder eventually
Another offering from Robert Stephen Simon a 1986 Carter and Gooden poster ~~ A friend gave me this and it was in a nice custom frame but a few years ago the glass was cracked -- didn't hurt the poster though.

I have 2 from 81 & 85
I used to have a couple of the 81 programs, the "cards" in them are
pretty cool.
Below are all* the All Star ballots that Gary is listed on
(*I have the 88 ballot somewhere but can't find it)
Want to get the years that he played signed (75, 79, 80, 81, 82, 83, 84, 86, 87, 88)
Since all of baseball is on a break today and a large percentage will be playing golf -- here are some other golf related items
This 1988 Starline poster is smaller than the one on day 88 and it is on thicker stock
A 1988 SGA Mets Calendar --- Gary is featured in July
A very small Expos helmet
I picked this order sheet up with the toughts that I would get it signed --- over the years other items jumped ahead on the got-to-be-signed list. I do not own one of the jackets.
Thanks for sharing!

Full Box of 1988 Score cards with Carter on the bottom.
Here are the 1985 and 1986 Topps 3D cards

A trio of oddball discs and 2 squares --- once again Gary is paired with Eric Davis
Your hall of fame stuff is great! I am so jealous of the invitation and ballot, just awesome stuff!

A 1978 Matchbook with Gary on the cover --- this is all the info I have --- My 2001 SCD guide has these matchbooks listed but from 1972-1976 no info on the 1978s
This 1982 preview sheet is on very thin, glossy paper and blank backed
Picked up this SGA a few years ago --- they also gave them out during a Brooklyn Cyclone game where my son was able to get a few more.
A couple of pins
Not sure why Gary, Reggie Jackson and Larry Bird were put on a pin to celebrate the Statue of Liberty
Today the Mets are inducting Davey Johnson, Dwight Gooden, Darryl Strawberry and Frank Cashen to the Mets Hall of Fame
Back in 2001 Gary Carter was inducted --- they gave out this large card/poster and Mark McGwire hit his 575 homerun
The photo with my son was taken this year at the new Mets Hall of Fame display
Here is a 1985 Polaroid ad with all the rip off forms attached
