I hate the pen that they used -- these balls have been in a box for years but the ink just keeps on fading

Cool idea by Reggie Jackson --- he had a bunch of guys sign stuff for his company and the packaging in first rate -- nice box, velveteen bag, cert of authenticity and great signed ball. -- Have the 86' WS Champs and "The Kid" balls. There was a 81/84 All Star MVP which I never picked up.

6 of the cards below are cards I got TTM before Gary came to the Mets (the 77 O-Pee-Chee and 82 Diamond Kings I picked up via ebay). I said it before - Gary was a awesome signer TTM.
I have gone back and forth on getting these slabbed -- knowing that these were sent by me and returned makes me want to keep them out of plastic -- I might get the 77 and 82 slabbed since they were pickups.

So NINE more days for the finale? Are you thinking of what you are going to show us for the 365th day?

The signed ticket stub is from the last games where I got to see Gary live -- he pinch hit in both game and had 1 hit and 2 RBIs on the day -- the Mets swept the double header

    A trio of bats

Top one is an unused Gary Carter model

Middle is a busted up bat from when he was coaching the Orange County Flyers -- had tickets to a game and sent them onto a member here - Jack - he picked this up for me -- Gary didn't use it but the Flyers had him sign balls and bats and sold them for $30.00

Third one is a ReggieJackson.com stat bat -- like the balls -- you get a cool velveteen bag to keep it in

I got these caps signed in June 1996 about a week after I came back from my honeymoon -- This is also the first time I met Gary -- he was awesome and my wife captured the shot below -- she was taking a bunch of pics as he was signing and when he was done he asked me if I wanted him to come out from behind the table for a shot -- unreal

Had the photo signed when I went to his Canadian HOF induction (2001)

Waiting for tomorrow's entry ... THE FINAL DAY of the YEAR LONG tribute to Gary Carter. I KNOW it's going to be very interesting. Looking forward to it.

PS Where the hell do you keep all of this stuff? I think any man crush a fellow board member has on Pujols is FAR outweighed by your interest in Mr. Carter!

    Day 365 -- April 7, 2011 -- THE END!

So I had this idea around late July of 2010 … an idea that even I can admit was unique, unreal and WAY WAY over the top. ~~~ BUT ~~~ if I didn’t try it would just be a wasted thought.

When I was a kid, next to baseball cards, space stuff was all my friends and I talked about. Star Wars came out in ’77 (I was 9) and I always loved hearing my parents and uncles talk about when astronauts walked on the moon. Jump to 1981 and the Space Shuttles – WOW – a rocket that is a plane is going to blast into space and then land – AWESOME!! The hype and anticipation of this moment for me was unreal – no web back then just the news, had to watch and hope that they would run a segment – when you are 12 going on 13 the news stinks and to try and sit trough it waiting for a story was painful.

Well the day came and I was glued to the screen for the blast off – again AWESOME – right then I wanted to be an astronaut. A couple of days later back to the TV screen to watch the landing. The mission was as success and it grabbed me like nothing else – my friends and I talked about it all the time, we did school projects on it, joined a NASA Shuttle fan club it was Shuttle this Shuttle that all the time.

Well the years pass and the time spent on space thoughts slowly goes away – girls, school, work, wife, kids – life -- takes over. For me shuttles and space were not even on the radar until I read that the shuttle program is going to be canceled. Everything came back - the feelings, memories and thoughts of being a 12 year old – I felt bad because another big part of my childhood was going away. I promised myself that whenever the last mission would fly I would, along with my 3 kids, take the time and watch.

Now here’s where the crazy light bulb pops above my head.

I was looking through ebay for some Carter stuff and watching Bruce Willis save the Earth in Armageddon and BANG!!!! I wondered if baseball cards ever went into space. If they had I believed that I would remember something like that so for the next few days I searched the web and nothing – the closest I came to space and baseball cards was Bill Lee. Since no card has had a ride to space I decided to ask one of the astronauts on the last mission to take my Gary Carter card with him. I found out who the Commander of the Endeavour was and the launch date was scheduled for Feb 26, 2011 – plenty of time to write a letter. Since this last launch would be 30 years since the first I decided on 1981 and thought I would send all Gary’s 1981 primary cards. I can’t tell you how excited I was to write this letter and the expectation that this might happen made me feel like I did as a 12 year old – it is a crazy request that might just be crazy enough to work – I mailed the letter in September 2010 . I had thoughts that the cards could be used as a bookmark for the flight manual or for a personal book, maybe they would be used to “scale” closest to the wall in space which would be a far cry from the boys bathroom, maybe some video would capture it – hundreds of thoughts flew through my mind. I asked that 2 of them be returned signed by the Commander I would keep one and send one on to Gary. I also couldn’t wait to detail this story on this thread - I was going to post it on the day of the launch.

I knew that the odds of this happening were soooo looong that when my SASE came back in October I was not upset. After opening my SASE and seeing that the Commander took the time to explain why they cannot take cards or any collectibles into space was special. Since my Carter collection and focus enabled me to have this cool return I was still excited to share this on launch day.

Before Endeavour was to be the last mission Shuttle Discovery was to launch in November 2010 but due to issues this launch was moved to Feb and Endeavour was tentatively scheduled for April 1 2011. Ok, this would be fitting to post this story on April Fool’s Day.

All thoughts of baseball cards and space took a backseat on Jan 8, 2011 --- I am sitting watching the news and a scroll comes on saying there was a shooting in Arizona with possible fatalities. Then to find out it was at a political event sent chills because the first thought I had was it must be terrorism related. I just watched and watched in sadness as the events were made known and I was rocked when they said a child had died. I do not know who Gabrielle Giffords was/is and my sadness turned to anger when the story of her community meet and greet turned into a horror show. Quickly her bio was broadcast for all and I was shocked when the press reported she had died then pulled that back. I understand that events and stories are fluid but how can you make a mistake with that one. The rollercoaster her family was on must have been awful. Then after a few hours when the news kept repeating the same stories and theories over and over did they turn to the families of the victims. I was in disbelief when they posted a picture and bio of Rep. Giffords husband Mark Kelly – the Commander of the final Shuttle flight in April 2011. Unreal the same man who took the time to send me a note, the same man who is preparing for a moment in history is now a man praying for his wife to stay alive. I stayed with the story for weeks disgusted that these regular people’s lives were shattered for no reason. I was not going to post this story just keep it to myself but after seeing the class and hope that Mr. Kelly had and the amazing progress of Rep. Giffords I felt good about the posting.

The launch was pushed back again to April 29, 2011 and now it’s not even the last Shuttle flight (they have added a mission) but I felt that this would be a good way to close out this year. I did have another story and items picked for the final post but I will hold them to myself for now. I find it funny that I have spent 364 days showing Gary Carter items and on the last day I don’t but I think the connection makes it worth adding to this post. I pray that Commander Kelly has a safe launch and return flight and that Rep. Giffords continues to recover.

Here are the 6 cards I hoped would make it into space

    image

This is the note that Commandar Kelly sent back

    image

He also sent along a mission patch - AWESOME

    image

Well that’s it !!! – a full year of Gary Carter items.

I had a blast doing it – it was a challenge at times but all in all - worth it. I thank everyone for looking in and those who posted or sent positive thoughts. I was able to scan or take a picture of about 75% of my Carter items which was the primary reason I started this thread. A few people have posted that they would like to see another collector pick up where this thread leaves off – I totally agree and I will be the first one to check it everyday.
