<< <i>I don't understand how smart people can root for the Yankees. It's never made sense to me. >>
There was a brief period of time in the mid '80's when, if I had been new to the game, I might have found myself rooting for them. That's when their roster had Winfield, Mattingly, Rickey, Righetti, Don Baylor and Ken Griffey.
Good luck with your Yankees going forward. It's always nice to see a scrappy bunch of underdogs play deep into October, so I suppose I can see the appeal. I'm under the impression that Selig and the MLBPA do, in fact, accept Christmas cards, so don't hesitate to send them a thank-you note if the Yankees end up hoisting hardware in November.
And if the Yanks don't win, well hey-- there is always the old VHS tape of the Miracle on Ice. I've heard that if you squint your eyes just so, and watch the game from a sharp angle, you can almost imagine that the Ruskies won in the waning seconds. True, it's not a Yankees WS victory, but it's probably the next best thing. >>

Excuse me, but at this stage in the exchange your job is not to be conciliatory, but to escalate the discussion so we can get into a pissing war over the relative merits of rooting for one bunch of millionaires over another bunch of millionaires- because, hey, that's what grown-ups do on the Internet.
<< <i>That was an ugly ass game. I didn't expect CJ Wilson to hold up so well, or the bullpen to ... whatever that was. >>
How was it an ugly ass game? The Yankees came back and won...The Rangers didn't take advantages of several scoring opportunities early in the game. The Yankees have the experience and never give up. That being said, I think we are in for a great series. Hopefully the Rangers will take game 2.
Man, I am sorry to hear about your negative experience with Yankee fans Navarro & Goot...I promise we're not all that way! If it makes it any better that type of B.S. pisses me off as well. Punks are punks regardless of what logo they wear on their baseball hat.
Anyway, I'd say good luck tonight but...well, ya know. I really do like The Rangers, and I liked The Rays as well. I think it's great when a team can come out of the blue playing great baseball and go deep into the season. I'm a fan of the game... The Yankees just happen to be my team. Here's to some good baseball today
I'd like to second what MMFB said. Not all Yankee fans are like that. The dedicated Yankee fans remember when Steinbrenner couldn't buy a winning team, no pun intended. Those are the Yankee fans that have class.
That being said, I was surprised by Ron Washington's decision to pull Wilson when he did. I thought Wilson had the game in control and I really believe he could have made it out of the inning with a lead. Putting Oliver in only to pull him after two walks showed some panic. And then to put O'Day and Rapada in for one pitch each made me scratch my head. For Smoltz to say (when Holland got to two pitches) "Hey he's still in there" or something like that, I actually laughed. It appeared that Ron Washington either panicked or out thought himself during that inning. I know his pitchers are all professionals and accustomed to pressure, but when you pull a kid after one pitch in possibly the biggest situation he has ever faced in his life, it's a confidence killer.
<< <i>WTF, the Rangers choked! Now I have to rely on the Phillies to dispose of the Evil Empire. >>
It's far from over yet. If Rangers win today, all of a sudden it becomes in effect a best of 5 the rest of the way. With the Rangers having Cliff Lee hurl for two of those games, and CJ for one, I like our chances.
If Rangers lose today, than they'll be lucky to come back. Today is a huge day for the franchise. I'll be headed up that way in about half an hour, talk to y'all later.
I'm hoping the Rangers put on a good show today. They outplayed the Yankees for 7/9 innings last night, and the pen blew the entire game. I can see how it would be a exciting win for the Yankees fans but I think at least they'll take away that the Rangers are a legitimate threat. I think your analysis of Yankees fans mirrors mine Mike, huge fan base = huge amount of punks, I have plenty of stories visiting Yankee stadium that are pretty lame.
Vlad you're killing me, hitting the ball hard this series but not finding any holes, you're due, let's do this! ...or save it for a time we need it. Just give me something, please?
I'm a Yankee fan and yes it is a different atmosphere at Yankee Stadium and around some Yankees fans. I went to the Marlins -Yankees World Series in 2003 and the seating attendant was about 18 years old in a suit coat and was about the biggest punk that you can imagine. He was so rude and talking like he was going to kick my butt.
And other than the look of the field and the skyline---the old stadium was a complete dump. Walking to your seat in the hallway looked like it could get dangerous. It looked like one big bathroom wall in the hallways. You also could only see the field if you were sitting in your seat. Historical but dreadful.
Just got back from the game. 1st ever playoff win for the Rangers in Arlington. That sounds pathetic and it is, but it was a heck of a lot of fun for us down here. The Yankees' gazillion World Series titles didn't seem to help them out a whole lot today. Here's some low quality camera phone pics I took:
Right before the game:
Here's a shot of Vlad batting for my Canadian friend Vlad:
Here's the Rangers steal of home during the first inning, you can see Hamilton headed toward 2nd and Posada getting ready to fire to 2nd (Note to Yankees and Posada - Scout a little bit better, Rangers just pulled this off a few weeks ago)
Here's a video board shot of Vlad for Canadian Vlad:
Here's another of the stout Yankee starting pitchers, Phil Hughes, getting sent to the showers rather early:
Here's the squad as they head toward the ninth:
Here is the young Rangers rookie closer punching out the great, HOF'er to be aging Derek Jeter:
And finally, Hello Win Column, overmatched, inexperienced AL West Rangers beat the almighty, powerful, bastions of baseball, Yankees, series tied 1-1
Got tickets for World Series Game 4 this morning if we make it that far. It's only the third time in my life that I've had World Series tickets and the first two times, I didn't get to use them because Rangers got knocked out. Maybe the third time is the charm!

Nam,
The old Rangers were bad about that actually. They liked to keep your money as long as possible and would try many times to "persuade" you to use it as a deposit for the next years season tix. I had some playoff tix last year and Tom Hicks made us wait until mid-December to get our $$$ back. This year, they are supposed to be credited back to our check cards at the end. They already owe me for one game of the ALDS since there was only 2 in Texas. One nice thing about the phantom tix from 1996, was that you didn't have to send the tix back, they just credited your account, and I sold one strip of the phantom tix to a guy in SCD a year later for $200.00
Vlad usually kills the Yankees 16/45 (.355 avg) last two post season series. Here's to breaking his slump tonight! One of my favorite Vlad videos... at old Yankee Stadium, watch it twice and look close if you have to... YouTube Video
<< <i>Lee's dealing, love the 2 run lead, where the Rangers fans at? >>
I don't know but this Yankee fan is right here...impatiently waiting for my team to break thru against Lee. Thought Hamilton had another one just now...
Hey no Yankee fans in here! Wait... this is Mike's thread and he would probably welcome you and offer you a bacon dog. Yeah, the camera work on that Hamilton fly was giving him second deck before they gave him warning track!
That's why it's a best of seven series.....anyone that disagrees, please refer to 2004 The '04 Red Sox certainly showed why best-of-seven series are NEVER over until one team wins their 4th game of the series.
(Spoken from a Yankees fan who lives in Red Sox Nation......live 8 miles from Fenway...on clear enough nights, I can see the lights from the stadium from my back yard)
Also must add.....if Girardi intends to use Burnett for the Yanks duration in the playoffs, he should be fired. Strictly hypothetically speaking, should the Yanks get into the Series, Burnett might as well sit in a luxury box, as he's as useful to the Yanks as Beckett and Lackey were to the Red Sox this year.
<< <i>Lee's dealing, love the 2 run lead, where the Rangers fans at? >>
I'm here, had to watch the game on my cell phone as this is the final week of our Fiddler on the Roof production that I'm in and we have 4 hour rehearsals every night this week. It will be cell phone baseball all week for me, I can't even cheer too loudly backstage either.
What a fun game to watch. The Rangers only needed two outs compared to the Yankees 27, as they had 2 runs after one out off of the perenial pantheon of playoff pitching prowess, Pettitte.
Once again, the Rangers didn't stumble as they ran around the 27 World Series trophies of the Yankees.
Way to go guys! I remember reading an online column from a NY writer a few days ago along the lines of how the Yankees should send their minor leaguers to play this series, as their trophies and stature would be enough to defeat the Rangers in a quick sweep. That kind of BS is what makes this fun so far.
2-1 Rangers. In all seriousness, there's a lot of baseball left, hopefully the Rangers can get it done. We'll see.
Nothing good can happen when your top 3 hitters are
Jeter - 2-14 Swisher - 1-13 (combined reg season & playoffs 4-40 against the Rangers this year with 16 Ks) Teixeira - 0-13
probably about 3 games late moving Gardner up to the #2 hole and Cano to #3 (lefty match-ups or not). Tex should definitely move down. He hasn't hit since August.
Take away one bad bullpen meltdown inning and this series is a boat race for the Rangers.
The Rangers have outdone the Red Sox & Yankees this year. The Yankees stole Tex from Boston, but the Rangers stole Lee from the Yanks. The Rangers got the Ace of Spades. The others got the queen of hearts.
<<The Rangers have outdone the Red Sox & Yankees this year>> I'm pretty confident if we had a healthy Youk, Ellsbury and Pedroia we would be in the mix. Go Rangers!
Great win last night Rangers! Great pitching performance by Lee and Petite wasn't too shabby either. I'm sure Lee would have completed the game if his offense didn't keep him on the bench so long in the bottom of the 8th, but I'm sure he'll take the W either way.
<< <i><<The Rangers have outdone the Red Sox & Yankees this year>> I'm pretty confident if we had a healthy Youk, Ellsbury and Pedroia we would be in the mix. Go Rangers! >>
Woulda, shoulda, coulda. ....something like that.
Sorry to say injuries are part of the sport. Glad to see Boston out of the mix this year.
I'm rooting for the Rangers as much as any clean living Yankee hater can, but that game one will likely come back to haunt. The Yanks are good enough to beat you without receiving gifts. Oliver will go down as a goat unless the Rangers are able to pull this out.
I don't know which would be more delightful; seeing the Rangers march on to the WS, or seeing 'Tex'-- who is, without question, my most hated MLB player-- go hitless in the series.

Not a Yankee fan but I would put Mark Texeira at the bottom of the list of being hated. He always seems pretty humble and just does his job without much fanfare. JMO. Congrats to the Rangers by the way, people said the American League West was weak, now they have a team with a pretty good shot at winning it all.
