Just came across this thread as I don't visit the forums as much as I used to. It's always nice to meet another HOF collector. Keep pluggin' away. Your collection is fantastic!
Very nice cards everyone. I never get tired of looking at these things.
Scott, nice pickups on the most recent HOF inductees...
Mark, I never get tired of looking through you collection of HOF portraits. I always see something different. The diversity of your set is simply amazing...
By the way Mark, I love the recent changes you've made to your website. By clicking on each portrait it gives a closeup of the cards and a biography of the HOF inductee and other cool info. I recommend you guys check it out...
Well done Donato . . . I love the color and the 3-D effect of the Kiner.
I just upgraded my '57 Frank Robinson (from a poorly centered PSA 3). I might have overpaid a bit for this one but the centering is exceptional -- especially for this card.
Scott, thanks for your kind words. I appreciate it. I really like the Kiner, too because of the off color background. Usually the background is more of an orange-red color. This one is more of a pink color.
Congrats on your upgrade of Frank Robinson, it's a nice looking card...
Here are my most recent pick-ups. I feel a bit guilty using these cards to fill in the 19th century and pre-war holes in my set, but they're affordable in high-grade and are rarely graded (the Kelley, Connor, Beckley and Keefe are all Pop 1s with none higher). These six additions moved me up to #10 in the All-Time Finest list, ahead of Soloway, 707 and Marshall Fogel! My grades on 15 Shakey's Pizza HOFers recently popped (you can see the raw images one page back) and I'll share those on this thread after I get the cards in-hand and scanned.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
I would like to extend a very big THANK YOU to Scott (scotgreb) for my latest addition. This item was waiting for me at the post office when I returned home from a business trip. This is one of the nicest gifts I've ever received, a wonderful suprise that holds a special place in my collection.
My grades came in on the 15 Shakey's Pizza HOFers I submitted back in March (you can see the images of the raw cards one page back in this thread). Very pleased overall: 2 PSA 7's, 9 PSA 8's, 2 PSA 8.5's and 2 PSA 9's. Here are the highlights:
Very cool thread, I just added this set to my registry. There are a few names of individuals (probably umpires) that I've never even heard of. This could get interesting.
Focused my National buying/submitting on cards that would improve my HOF Players set, as well as adding to my type-set diversity (Ultimate PSA Sampler registry set). I have to admit I've been inspired by the amazing number of different sets represented in Donato's collection. As a result I now have the oldest 8 in my collection (1935 Diamond Stars "Stonewall" Jackson) and oldest 9 as well (1951 Topps Blue Back Bobby Doerr). As you'll see below, I've added representatives from 1952 Bowman and 1953 Bowman Color too.
And the one I went up to Baltimore for:
I also subbed 15 HOFer 1974 Laughlin Old-Time Black Stars from a raw set I won from Steve Hart in April. I love this set and a number of these cards are arguably these players' RCs since they have no other baseball cards until the retro set boom of the last decade. Here are the five that graded highest (all are now Pop 1's with none higher):
And finally this one, which is now the only 10 from this set (247 total cards graded):
I can't describe how excited I was when I pulled this card from the PSA box on Friday afternoon at the show, it's the only 10 I've ever received from a sub. All in all, a great National!
Love the Polar Bear backs they are one of my favorites. Nice pickup on the T206 Brown...
paleocards...
Glad I could be of inspiration in building your set, but I must give credit to Mark (rustywilly) for the idea of utilizing as many sets as possible in putting the HOF set together. He was my inspiration. Great job on your National pickups. I really like Feller and the Reese is a classic. I also like the colors on the Diamond Stars Jackson. I don't have a Diamond Stars card in my set, but hope to include one at some point. Congrats on your nice range of pickups.
A BIG CONGRATS on your PSA 10 Martin Dihigo. Always a proud moment to get your first 10.
I was equally excited when I got this Dihigo back from PSA at the Nationals.
Here are a few others that I crossed over or picked up at the Nationals. All new types. Enjoy...Donato
Thanks Donato. Your Dihigo is an amazing card, where did you find it raw in the first place? And I love that Anson; it looks like the National was good to you too!
I found the Dihigo at the Nationals at Ryan Christoff's booth who sells a lot of Cuban, Venezuelan and other Latin American cards. It was not raw, it was an SGC 40/3. I was told PSA would not grade it better than a PSA 2 because of the staining on the back. PSA is more strict on centering and staining when grading cards than SGC.
The Anson, was a crossover also. I love the image on it and it presents very well, but the pin hole gives it an automatic PSA 1.
Good stuff guys! I started one of these sets this week and I'm in 76th place to start. How do you guys collect this set? Vintage cards or modern cards? Anything goes with this set!! Check out what I have so far: My Hall Of Fame Player Set (jb217676)
Scarlem -- Welcome and congrats on starting the set . . .
There are actually two HOF Complete Registry Sets. The set titled "Hall of Fame Complete" is for playing years cards only -- so mostly vintage cards are required for completion. It currently has 252 slots, i.e., 40 HOFers do not have playing year cards, although new "finds" are added to the set occasionally. Most are negro leaguers and pioneers. Conceptionally, I like this set more than the other, which it titled "Hall of Fame Players, Managers, Owners, Executives, Pioneers, Commissioners & Umpires" -- for that set, any graded card is eligible to fill the slot. The upside is that there is a slot for all 292 HOFers, which makes for a true "complete" set.
I focus primarily on the playing years set but recently have started adding cards of the 40 other players toward completion of the other. Ultimately, I'd like to have a playing years card of all that are possible and fill in the remainder with modern cards. The downside of this is that a there are several HOFers that have relatively few and expensive playing years cards.
Good luck and please keep us posted on your progress.
Welcome to HOFer collecting and this thread. Nice start on the HOF player set and I appreciate you taking the time and making the effort to provide scans of all your cards. I've been working on this set for over four years and I'm now #6. I've tried to collect the 1950s-present players during their playing years, but the pre-war, 19th century and negro leaguers are too tough, scarce and expensive for my budget in high grade so these players are mostly represented by 1950 Callahan, 1961 Golden Press, 1960 & '61 Fleer and 1974 Laughlin (for many of the Negro Leaguers).
However, Scott , Donato and other contributors to this thread have inspired me to go after the old-timers during their playing years so I'll likely be starting the "real" HOFer set after the new year.
Good luck and I look forward to your contributions!
I have about 15 nice vintage playing career cards coming my way that will fill some hole in this set. I'll keep you posted! I also really like the 1974 Laughlin Black Star cards. I would love to pick up a nice raw set if anyone has one for sale.
My hall of fame players set is up to #63! Still have a bunch more on the way. If interested, click on the link to check out my sets I'm currently working on.
Thanks for sharing your sets and showing them off with scans. I love when the sets include scans as it gives us a chance to see pictures of some cards that we may have never seen before. I also like how diverse your sets are, including hockey and basketball. I guess that way you never get bored as you will always have something different to search for.
You have a good start on your HOF set, keep up the good work...
I'm not a huge fan of the newer cards, but that Yawkey card is a real beauty...
Do you know why PSA will not include the Ted Williams card with Tom Yawkey pictured on the front in the HOF set? Is it because Yawkey is not named on the front of the card?
Do you know why PSA will not include the Ted Williams card with Tom Yawkey pictured on the front in the HOF set? Is it because Yawkey is not named on the front of the card?
Donato, I asked the registry folks a while back and following is their response;
"The 1959 Fleer Ted Williams #42 is a Ted Williams card. We do realize that Yawkey is pictured on the card but the card is actually a Ted Williams card. This card is already in use in the Ted Williams slot in the HOF Complete set and has been for a while. A card cannot be used for 2 different slots in the same set"
I'm not sure I agree but didn't press it -- Note that Yawkey's name is on the back.
The same thing happened to me with another card, A fatima team card.
The PSA software only allows a given team card to be entered for one player, whichever one gets requested first, even if that team card has several hall of famers. Likewise with any card that has more than one person, such as the Yawkey card. Why they can't change this software limitation with 21st century technology remains a mystery to me (and to them too, apparently). My guess is that the issue never got past the front lines to the technical staff.
Furthermore, although the folks I corresponded with at PSA were very nice during several email to and fros, they seem to have no interest in fixing this glitch.
I've argued for inclusion of the Yawkey as well. To the extent that the software doesn't allow the same card to be used in multiple slots, that cries out for a software update. There are quite a few cards featuring multiple HOFers together, and in many of those cases it's no more one player's card than the other's ('35 Goudey, Double Play, Mecca Double Folders, Exhibits 4-in-1, combo cards, NL & AL Leaders, etc.).

That's what I enjoy most about this registry set -- the freedom to include such unique cards. I don't believe I've ever seen that McPhee.
