I just purchased a <gasp> MODERN <gasp> FIRST STRIKE <gasp> BULLION coin from Mode

LongacreLongacre Posts: 16,717 ✭✭✭
Perhaps it is the heat wave that is currrently hitting my area, or the spinach salad with olive oil and red wine vinegar that I just ate, but literally seconds ago, I purchased a <gasp> modern <gasp> PCGS First Strike <gasp> bullion coin from Modern Coin Mart. I made sure that I shut the blinds in my office so no one could witness me doing this.

Next thing I will be looking through rolls of coins from the bank on my kitchen table. image

  • Might as well stock up on Chinese silver...image

    Is this piece frothy enough for you though?
  • Did you remember to ask that it be delivered in a plain brown box with no return address?

    I'd also sugget this might be a good time to wipe the hard drive on your computer.

    It may be bullion but it is also a piece of art. If you consider it art then $29 is a steal. image

    did you pay a premium for its strike timing?
    that is the question

    Good for you Longacre!

    I LOVE the classic coins (big time), but will ALWAYS keep one foot in the modern issues and one foot in the classic issues. That is just another way to become a well rounded numismatist.....that and eating lots and lots of Krispy cream doughnuts.image

  • Looks like a decent price to me, as long as you like it, that's all that matters. Chinese coins are always better bought in PCGS plastic.

    You made two big steps, Michael.

    First buying the MFSB from MCM!

    Second, admitting it in public!!

    Hopefully, you will enjoy your new purchase!!

    I somehow knew you weren't being serious.

  • Why do people get bullion slabbed? First of all they are not coins. They are a convenient way to own Bullion. Thats all. Also they are all the same. MS-69, 70 meaningless.

    Slabs for expensive (gold/platinum) bullion make sense as evidence of authenticity. That is probably also true for Chinese silver.

    Slabs protect the surface of bullion coins. If you're a collector, as opposed to a metal dealer, you don't want your MS69 to get dinged or end up with fingerprints.

    As for "all the same," people collect and slab zinc cents with mintages in the hundreds of millions.

    I'm still in shock. It's almost as if chaos has taken over the world. As our fellow numismatist tweeted earlier today ... Oy Vay!

    KJ ---> so much in shock I neglected to use proper forum emoticons upon first hearing this sad news of Mr. Longacre's mixing and mingling with the hoi polloi imageimageimageimageimageimage

    It's now official. Moderns have arrived and the final sign of the apocalypse is fullfilled.

    So we've got;

    Liteside= US classics
    Greyside= Canada or British coins
    Darkside= world coins
    Farside= Tokens and medals

    And drumroll please...

    Brightside= Moderns.

    Maybe we should start a new thread and take a vote since, no doubt, some would pre-
    fer a less "intense" name.

    Longacre, I think your next moves should be to assemble the finest registry set of SBAs and get the finest known Eunice Shriver coin.

    LOL.

    I recently bought the same Panda as a gift for my niece. But I liked it so much that I went back and got one for myself!

    I think it's a really beautiful piece of silver. Unless someone sees it in hand they wouldn't know what I mean. And I didn't know you could get so many textures out of silver.

    This isn't something I would normally buy. Or admit to buying. But I was surprised by the beauty of it.

    I collect history in the form of coins.
  • I like it. I was actually considering it for purchase at one point. image
  • pmacpmac Posts: 3,189 ✭✭✭
    At a whim and after reading some responses, I bought one of these beauties. I ordered it on the 19th and received it on the 22nd, pretty good instant gratification. The Chinese did an exceptional job on this coin. The shading of the pandas and their surroundings can only be appreciated in hand. If somebody who has the coin and the knack of photography, it would be interesting to see the coin shown with multiple lighting angles.
