Does anyone else here collect/like 1990s parallel (plus Fleer/Ultra inserts)insert sets?

As you know, my main goals right now are the finish up my 1974-79 sets in PSA 7 keys (or PSA 8 for 1978-79) as well as collect the major set runs from the 1990s (up till about 1995 or so). That being said, I was wondering if anyone else here is into 1990s parallel insert sets. These are what I have so far (the first four are my favorites):

1992 Leaf Black Gold set
1993 & 1994 Finest Jumbo All-Stars set
1994 Score Gold Rush set
1995 Score Platinum set
1995 Bowman Gold subset
1995 SP Platinum set (want to add 1994 SP die-cut set)
1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000 Ultra Gold Medallion sets (includes all SP's!)
1996-97 Mantle Finest set, 1997 Mays Finest set (want to add Clemente/Ryan/Aaron Finest sets)

And the sets I'd like to get in this order (besides the ones above that extend current runs):
1993 Upper Deck Gold Holograms
1994 Upper Deck Electric Diamond
1996 Fleer Tiffany
1992-94 Topps Gold
1994-? Collectors Choice Silver Signature

Anyone else into 1990s parallel insert sets?

I'm occasionally working on the Collectors Choice Gold Signature sets and Stadium Club 1st Day Issue/First Day Production sets, plus I will end up picking up others - I don't pay much attention to the 1-per-pack parallels.
I am seriously working on the Upper Deck MVP Gold Script and (when I see them, which is seldom) Super Script sets.

Have a box of 93 Topps Gold, well over half the series one set, and a few from series two (no Jeter). Thought about making a set out of it. Then realized you could just buy one for $50

  • Actually, 1991 Desert Shield would be the first parallel, 1992 the first parallel insert. Is that correct? Or anything earlier?

I love the 90's parallel and inserts sets. Here are some of my favorites
1995 sp holoview red die cut football, 1994 Score The Cycle baseball, 1992 Fleer Rookie Sensations baseball, and of course my favorite is the 99 bowmans best atomic refractors which I'm currently working on (27% complete)

I am thinking of collecting the Donruss Elites from 1991 to 1994?. I am kicking myself for passing up 1992 Elite "commons" for $3 each at a show a few years back. I pulled a Boggs Elite in 1992 and was so psyched. The card shop owner offered me $100 on the spot and I laughed. I'd take that deal now. Of course, who knew back then. I saw him plunk down $50 for a 1991 U.D. Hank Aaron Heroes hologram the same day he bought about 300 Gd-VG Old Judges for $1000.
Kiss me once, shame on you.

  • I have thought about doing the Elites as well but always get side tracked before I get started. They were such awesome pulls back in the day so having a whole set seems ridiculous!

You are so wrong. This is a really pretty set.

I was able to get a full Series 1 set via redemptions. Unfortunately, quality control wasn't great. Team set errors weren't uncommon. The checklists had several errors also. I was able to find the missing cards, so now I really do have a full set.

As a player collector whose formative years in the hobby spanned the '90s, they are an important focus of my collection.

I collect some complete sets, but I tend to do complete runs, year by year, of similarly themed parallels...just finished a Stadium Club 1st Day Issue run recently.

I also collect the non-1st Day Issue Stadium Club parallels, and I've even gone as far as to collect 1st Day Issues of the checklists that mention Frank Thomas on them.

I pulled a Frank Thomas back then - wish I had sold it!

I sent it to a board member who said it was creased - never noticed it - he said he was sending it back - but never did - to be honest - I was giving it as a present but was just interested how I missed a crease in it.

The Elites were cool cards IMO.

As a side note - the parallel sets may have been one of the major contributors to masses of collectors being turned off to modern cards - for one thing - no one really knows how much was printed - my guess? Enough to last about 2 centuries!

Estil - I do agree - the 92L prarallel were good looking - I still have a pile - if memory serves, a while back I looked to see if I had any for your set but came up zip.
    Good luck on your quest.

But the neat thing about the parallel sets is that they're much more limited edition than the standard set. For example, for every 14-15 regular 1992 Leaf set, there's only one Black Gold set. That is, only 7% of all the 1992 Leaf cards are Black Gold. No wonder that set was worth over $200 back when it first came out!

I am working on the 1991 donruss elite set

    I have

    Ryan Sandberg Signature Series /5000
Nolan Ryan Legend Series / 7500

I have Brett, Canseco, Drabek, Henderson, Matt Williams and Dawson

I need two to complete set- Bonds and Fielder

I have two 92 elites and will work on the one next.

As a kid I pulled a Henderson and Brett-I sold them for around 100 and 175.

Later my father bought me a Barry Bonds Elite for 100.00 for making the honor roll in school. The only time he ever did anything like that and sure enough I traded it later on.

I regret that trade and wanted it(Bonds) to be the final piece to my quest.

The 1991 elite was back then and always has been my favorite insert set of all time.

** Working on the following sets-2013 Spectra Football Hall of Fame 50th Anniversary Autograph set, 2015 Spectra Football Illustrious Legends Autograph set, 2014-15 Hall of Fame Heroes autograph set. **

Interesting, my dad is not really a fan of the hobby, and he asks me once a month if I sold my collection yet because "the bottom is falling out of the market" but he did buy me an 86 Donruss Rookies Set for Christmas in 1986/87 and I was blown away. How did he know about them? Turns out he walked into the card shop and asked. image When I opened the set they were all way O/C. But a 12 yr old could give two squirts.

Here are some of my treasures that will be worthless in 20 years. Most of these sets are complete or need one or two cards:

1991 & 1992 Donruss Elite (I have the Sandberg auto but didn't feel like digging it out. Need 1991 Canseco if anybody has one)

    image

    image

1995 Select Artist's Proofs (only need Mattingly if anybody has one)

    image

1993 Select Chase Stars and Chase Rookies (Also have Aces which is a very underrated and tough set)

    image
    image

1993 Select Rookie/Traded Inserts (Impossible to pull)

    image
    image

1992 Fleer Team Leaders (Only found in underproduced racks)

    image
    image

    1992 Stadium Club Beam Team

    image

And of course, these ultra scarce 1994 Pinnacle series two inserts that came in a hotpack Roger sent me. Obviously they need no explanation; you all know what they are

    image

I won't steal estil's thunder by scanning the 95 Score Platinum set since he got his first and paid about 25% of what I paid for mine. Right now I'm working on the 93 refractor sets and the 93 first day production sets.

Anything from the '90s with foil (dufex or holo) and any great parallels like Artist's Proofs are gold to me. Excellent display...the '92 Thomas Elite is one of my favorite all time cards and I'd love to own a copy of the Ripken auto one day.

I also want to clarify that the person who Mike sent the Thomas Elite card to was not me.

1991 Topps Desert Shield. It's the only set from the '90s that I still like.

That Desert Shield Thomas is nice!

I bought two unopened Desert Shield packs off eBay a few years back. There was really no way of telling if they were legit, and once I got them I couldn't help it, so I ripped them. Nothing great, but I recently sent a few off to PSA and they each came back 9's. I've always liked that set.

  • Those 91 Leaf gold rookies bring back some memories (not very good ones).

Picture a 13 year old kid trying to piece together this "hot set" one card at a time. With a 13 year olds bank account. Very hard to do and very expensive back in 91 and 92. This is when the Todd Van Poppel was one of the hottest cards in 91. The Ryan Klesko was like $13. They were all so expensive.

Pieced together, the whole thing was $135-160 I think. Seemed like a can't lose insert set at the time. I still have about 1/2 the set, but they arent even gradable, most of them would be nr mint. The gold borders were always so delicate.
