Yes they did do preview sets of the Leaf/Studio sets at the time (they put four of them in 1991 Donruss factory sets) and you have to figure the only other day to get them is if you are a hobby shop owner so in a way that would make them even harder to come by, especially at that time right?
I decided to pick up the cards I was missing for the 1992 Gold Leaf Previews. No idea why. As tough as they are, I saw Kruk sold a complete set for $15 on Ebay. Seems a little nuts to me
Resurrecting this thread as a lot of these sets are finally getting there just due. I searched for threads about 1994 Topps Black Gold since I found this recently:
I saw your thread @jackstraw , did you ever complete it? This one will be going to PSA soon, only 6 graded with one 9 and no 10s!
Did I ever get around to getting the 1994 Black Gold set or not...I should check...
But yeah, 1994 was the first full year I started regularly buying packs (that was all I could afford at the time; I had to wait till got to college in 1999 before I could afford to collect sets and truly make a really serious collection)! That was a GREAT year for insertmania and so naturally one of my main projects is trying to get as many of the early/mid 90s baseball/football/basketball sets I can! Think of how much fun it is to own a master set...regular and all the insert sets! Well not counting the serial numbered ones...those are usually too hard/expensive to realistically get the whole set.
Nice old thread. I collect many of these issues. My favorite is series 2 1992 leaf. I have many unopened boxes. usually pay around $15 or so for them. Kent, Thome, Griffey.

Why only series 2? Personally I never understood why they bother with selling Series 1 only or Series 2 only sets (at least vintage 90s sets). I mean nobody only wants half a book or half a movie or half a car or...
I go after the black insert cards. Kent and thome are the key ones and Griffey isn't bad either. Frank Thomas might be in series 2 also. Series 1 has Pedro and Nolan. I do have a few of the series 1 boxes.

I can only imagine what it was like in those pre-Internet days trying to get a whole set of those one per pack inserts...shoot I remember seeing the Beckett prices for sets of one per carton inserts like 1993 Stadium Club First Day Issue and 1994 Collector's Choice Gold Signature that had prices listed for them (~$2000?). How in the world in those pre-Internet days were there actually enough of those sets in existence that Beckett could list a price for them? I mean, when was the last time you seen any sets like this on Ebay, let alone actually existing in the pre-Internet days?

@Estil My only sports chase set was the 1994 upper deck football electric gold football set (at an insert rate of 1 per box). I did hundreds of card shows hunting them down pre-internet days… with help from fellow collectors searching their local shows.
It’s a 330 card off-the-beaten-path set, that people told me I would never complete. It took about 10 years, and the last 6 cards finally showed up on eBay…(324 non-internet cards!) but I’m pretty sure it’s a good example of how hard it was to do!!!
Now…. Should I go after a PSA graded Gem Mint 10 1994 Upper Deck Electric Gold Football set???? Lol

Back in 1994 Pinnacle issued their baseball set. Liked the look of the set
and the Duffus cards along with the Artist Proofs, (AP).Decided that I was
going to work on a Master Set. Duffas, AP, inserts and promos. Wound up
with over 1000 extra Duffas cardsand 500+ extra of the AP's. Three years later I was down
to 24 AP's I needed. Something called Ebay comes along and I'm on the hunt.
Even got a bunch of warnings from Ebay because I was PM-ing or Emailing
sellers. There was a guy on Ebay buying all of the AP's and 1993 refractors.
He saw my list and sent 10 free of charge. I sent him a check and he returned
it with the word VOID. A note was with the voided check, THEY ARE A GIFT.

I used to like doing parallel sets. Some of the toughest that I did pre-internet were the 93-94 Stadium Club Basketball First Day Production series one set, 1996 Topps Finest Refractor football series 1 bronze, silver and gold and 94 Pinnacle Museum Collection baseball series one. I just recently sold most of those on eBay.

I had a similar experience at that time with my set…
I was at a large regional Connecticut show and did every table and added 10 off of my checklist… I stopped at a large dealer table and inadvertently left the 10 cards on his table for less than a minute… he scooped them up, denied taking them, and threatened to call security if I didn’t leave his table!
About 5 years later, a collector I dealt with was doing a regional Illinois show and had my list… he found (no lie) 10 cards at a dealer table. He bought them and sent them to me for free!!!
I was AMAZED to see them all again, and he wouldn’t take a penny for them!!!
But when I asked him who he got them from… he described the NY dealer and his wife to a tee… I guess that the $5.00 he got for those commons was worth it to the dealer, having lugged around my 10 cards that nobody else wanted for 5 years!!!!

That is a great card!! If you ever want to sell it let me know. Had 2 of the "Certified" ones at one time, many years ago but sold them and would love to replace it. I have the set still and the A and AB certified cards but need that one to finish it now.
@Estil and @threeofsix I would go down to Pidgeon Forge a couple of times
a year and walk thru two of their flea markets. One card dealer had a 800 ct,
box of the Duffas cards and 300ct. box of the Artist Proofs. I started going thru
them to get the ones I needed. He said no single sales. The whole box or nothing.
I asked him how much for both and he said $300. I paid him and left. I found
about 30 Duffas cards I need and about 75 of the AP's. Had many smaller deals
like this on Ebay. That's why I'm stuck with so many. Wish I could find them.
At least I've got the master set in two albums.

And sadly it's already been a little over three years since that part of my life ended She was quite supportive and knew how much that dream set (1971) meant to me so I'm glad I was finally able to get a great starter set a few days ago. I'm kinda dedicating that project and 1972 to her kinda
Thanks; I just can't believe it's been that long ago and though I'm not at all happy about having to put so much on Paypal Buyer Credit, I am happy that I can finally start on this project that she too knew how much it meant to me and in a way, it helped with the majority of what may be the hard part (getting the raw/in binder part of the set in the best condition I can reasonably find)
I recently went thru my endless 5k monster boxes of star cards, and to a lesser extent commons, and pulled out all of my inserts/subsets/parallels....ended up filling almost six 5k count boxes...next task is to go thru and figure out which ones I want to grade....currently looking for basketball and hockey inserts that I can submit under the August special -- if there are any specific players or cards anybody may be interested, give me a holler...I will never get around to either grading these or putting them on Ebay, so I need to find other avenues to sell/trade a bunch of these
Recently ripped a couple of boxes of 1992 Leaf and got a Frank Thomas and Jim Thome Gold parallel cards, these are really nice looking cards with the black borders and gold printing.
Anyone familiar with these? They seem pretty hard to find in mint condition.
Was surprised to see sale price on Jeff Kent rookie was higher on the base card than the "gold"!?!? 47 base cards graded PSA 10, only 4 of the "gold".

You are correct. His heirs sold the refractors on Ebay. I've wondered about the disposition of the artist Proofs.

@Estil I didn't ask. That joyful part of my life
wouldn't come for another 20 years.
And sadly it's already been a little over three years since that part of my life ended She was quite supportive and knew how much that dream set (1971) meant to me so I'm glad I was finally able to get a great starter set a few days ago. I'm kinda dedicating that project and 1972 to her kinda

@Estil I am sorry for your loss.

Yes, still love inserts. My Epson is better than my camera also Some favorites:
Out of the same box!
