I've now just got back into my insert collecting (I'm now going for 1990-93 Upper Deck inserts and 1990-94 Donruss and Leaf inserts in addition to my main 1986-96 Fleer/Ultra inserts quest) so I thought it'd be fun to bring this topic back up
I've been building the SP Authentic football inserts (Holoviews, Players Ink, Sign of the Times, etc.) for years. I've recently started doing a few insert sets from other companies. Fleer Pro-Visions in baseball, some pro bowl inserts, 97 Ultra Specialist in football. I agree with Estil. Ultra has some of the best insert sets
I just recently picked up 1999 and 2000 Ultra Gold Medallion sets (both with SPs!) for just $120 each! And the 1996-98 ones were $75 each; very nice cards I think.
<< <i>I dont collect "90's" per se, but am not averse to them either. But generally I collect 80's and more modern stuff. Mostly due to accessibility. >>
Not only the nostalgia factor (I started collecting in the mid-90s) but I love how they are mostly pretty affordable yet pretty challenging to find too.
if you want a nice looking and very affordable 90's insert set, take a look at '92-'93 Fleer All Stars. Team Leaders set from that year is great as well, but more expensive.
Looking for rare Randy Moss rookies and autos, as well as '97 PMG Red Football cards for my set.
Yes the guy who I got the Ultra b-ball sets with the inserts also has 1993-94 and 1992-93 Fleer b-ball with some inserts as well...but it'll probably be awhile before I can afford to get them

I probably have a full '92 fleer AS set I would move for a very fair price - just depends on if I have a raw Jordan or if I have to move a 9. W/O the jordan would only look for $15-$20 for the other 23 cards.

That would be most helpful...but of course I put all these insert sets in binders so I don't want any graded versions.
Estil- I'm a big Fleer and Ultra collector. I would get pissed that the gold medallions were essentially the same as the regular Ultra card. If I remember though, one year Ultra old medallions were different from the regular set. Do you know which that might be.

1997. And I disagree that the GM's are "essentially the same as the regular Ultra card", except the 1995 of course. I wonder if it wouldn't hurt to also have the 1996-2000 regular sets too?
I just feel, if they are going to do a Gold medallion or parallel set, change the picture. It's the reason why I don't collect Topps Chrome, or Bowmans best. It's the same damn pic as the base card, for more money!! I have to find my 97 set. Was it in football or baseball, or both? That would be a nice challenge. Doing the base and gold medallion sets in graded form.

I thought the whole idea of a parallel set is to make a dressed up more limited edition version of the regular set? They didn't change the picture for any of the others after all.
Of course you know I don't do graded cards except for my 70s sets right?
I do not know if the Cubs had a team issued set. Research has not come up with any. Looks like there are Dodgers, Braves, Yankees from what I can tell.
I think the people who underestimate the future potential of 90's inserts/parallels are seriously off-base. It the collectible game you should never underestimate the value of nostalgia. I mean, if a he-man action figure from 1984 can sell for 10,000 dollars why can't a high grade 1992 Donruss Elite Frank Thomas sell for a couple hundred? I know they ARE selling for that now, but for someone to say they "will be worthless" doesn't make sense. Sure there are 10,000 of them, but how many He-Man figures rolled off those production lines?
Sports cards exploded in popularity in the early 90's. With the introduction of Shaquille O'Neal, huge stars like Jordan, and Griffey the number of young collectors who came into the hobby at that time is staggering. Those 10 year old kids are now 30 year old adults with an income and a desire for their childhood. Rookies were nice in those days, but inserts were king. All I wanted as a young collector was a 1993-94 Ultra Scoring Kings Michael Jordan. Never came close...never saw one except in the pages of Beckett. Now to get one in high grade they go for at least 400.00.
When you mix Nostalgia with the scarcity of the inserts in a PSA 10 you will get a sustained value at the very least. At most, this could be the next frontier.
I like a lot of the insert sets as well. I do think many of them are way over priced, but I still like them. I was working on a run of the UD inserts back in the day, but quit all collecting from about 93-2003 due to the many sets and volumes these companies were printing out.

My best insert pull as a kid was a 1993 Leaf Gold Rookies Mike Piazza. The shop owner lost his mind over it, but I wouldn't part with it.
Insert sets I'm working on:
1993 UD Looss Collection
1993 Pinnacle Rookie Team Pinnacle
1994 Triple Play Medalists
1994 Leaf Slideshow
1994 Leaf Power Brokers (fairly easy, just haven't looked much)
1994 UD Mantle's Long Shots (regular & electric diamond)
1994 Donruss Studio Stars (silver and gold)
Main collecting focus is Patrick Roy playing days 85/86-02/03, expect 1/1, National/All-Star stamped cards.PC Completion: 2,548/2,952; 86.31% My Patrick Roy PC Website:https://proy33collector.weebly.com
The 90s are my favorite decade in the hobby. Something I really want to do sometime in finish every NBA base set from 1992-93 through 1997-98 and as many of the inserts and parallels as possible as well. I'm probably about 90% there already with the only sets not close being the Finest sets from 93-94, 96-97 and 97-98. I've already finished 1991-92 and older, back to 87-88. Actually I may not have finished 90-91 Skybox but I really dislike the set and can't remember. Would lose what I've typed if I tried to go check my list.
As a player collector I am always on the lookout for early to mid 90's inserts as you mentioned. One that has plagued me for a while is the 92 Leaf Black Gold, I have still yet to find a Greg Maddux that is worthy of submitting...dang black borders!
@Estil said:
Should be easier to get high PSA grades than 1971 Topps at least i'd figure right?
I had about 30 sealed packs of these I found recently. I don't know exactly how they were distributed, but there was just one card in each back. I don't think I found a single card that was worth subbing!
It's right on the 1992 Leaf header card...they are extremely limited edition...one card per foil pack. You figure there's one black gold card and 13 regular cards per pack, that means only 7.69% as many Black Gold sets as there are regular ones. No wonder they were well over $200 a set at the time of its release (remember no Internet/Ebay for another five years or so).
EDIT: I only get 90s inserts and such to put in binder/pages...I only do graded (PSA 7) for the main 1970s cards of my sets to protect against trimmed cards and such.
Yes they did do preview sets of the Leaf/Studio sets at the time (they put four of them in 1991 Donruss factory sets) and you have to figure the only other day to get them is if you are a hobby shop owner so in a way that would make them even harder to come by, especially at that time right?
Another thing I like about this project is that it gives me the chance to do "set building"...see you guys know how I like to get complete sets and put them in albums? Well, it's the best and cheapest way to get them...but then I kinda miss the fun of things like building a set and breaking a wax box (as wax boxes tend to be more expensive, getting a set out of it is usually impossible, and there's usually very little chance you'll "break even" from big pulls)...but by doing these insert sets, it really does give me the feel and the fun of set building if you guys get what I mean by that.
In a different life as primarily a Don Mattingly collector in the 90's a few of my favorite insert sets were:
1993 Score Franchise
1993 Donruss Elite
1994 Score Dream Team
1995 Leaf Statistical Standouts
1995 Pinnacle Red Hot
1995 Pinnacle White Hot
1995 Score Rules
1995 Summit Nth Degree.
Had a couple of local dealers who would pull and hold the Mattingly's for me, and I'd get the occasional White Hot Frank Thomas, Baerga Nth Degree etc because I liked the look of the inserts or parallels.
1994 Ultra Football had the cool looking Ultra Flair inserts. Hot Numbers, Scoring Power, Wave of the Future.
1996/97 Select Certified Mirror Gold Hockey. Beautiful cards. Got a Stevens and Chelios on display around here.
I didn't do much with basketball back in the day. Maybe a couple of Upper Deck Special Edition Golds, an occasional refractor from 93 or 94.
While not worth major $$$$ like the old days, I still like picking up the occasional 80's - 90's insert. Some of the best looking cards from any era were inserts from that era
Back in 1994 I started on the Pinnacle BB set.
Finished the "Museum" set including the "send aways"
Finished the "Artist Proof" set in 1999.
All the insert sets including the "Delgado".
In other words a "Master Set". Last looked at the set
15+ years ago. I have a box of Museum and APs that
need to go to the BST forum.
Around 1992 or 93 didn't Hoops or Skybox have a parallel
set, something with a "Gold Medallion" stamp? I finished
that set as well.
One can get some nice artistic looking inserts on the cheap from that era. Heading For The Hall, Flair Hot Gloves were a few of my favorites. And any Dufex cards. Many are more interesting than some of what is being produced today.
Successful transactions:Tookybandit. "Everyone is equal, some are more equal than others".

Good catch - you know it!
Good luck on the insert sets, I know they can be a beast.
90-91 UD Hockey "holograms" are the first inserts I remember getting.

I had to look, what I have is the gold leaf stars or previews, whatever it's called. Black border set with only 33 cards.

At least now they're cheap enough where collecting them all is a reasonable goal...i mean they're still the same cards now as then right?

Ultra had the Gold Medallion in series 1 in 1995-96 and full set every year after.
You may be thinking of the 5th Anniversary parallel for 1993-94 Hoops which had gold foil borders around the name bar and an embossed 5th anniversary logo.
