    << <i>UPDATE

Evidently, through yesterday 03/03/09, the Mint/Pitney has already shipped approximately 20,000 UHRs. If this shipped number is accurate then Pitney only has 9,000 units remaining of the original 29,000 units minted. I have not heard if the Mint has completed any additional mintings above and beyond the original 29,000 units. Given the current extraordinary supply constraints on the Mint's procurement of planchets, it is unlikely any additional mintings have been completed although there may be work in process. These shipped numbers coincide with the Internal PBGS Memo dated 03/03/09 which stated "A large percentage of customer orders will be in the mainstream by week's end." For some us myself included, it is really coming down to the wire, a photofinish if you will. >>

Imron, it's pretty early in the year. IMO the mint has plenty of time to cough up some more blanks before it's over. Summer might be dry, but I think it will pick up a bit in the fall, depending of course on gold prices. I wouldn't be shocked if these break over 80,000 before it's all said an done. Of course anything is possible. >>

Yes, you are correct to a certain extent, however I did find out some unsettling information which I may disclose in another thread. Nevertheless, the photofinish I was referring to above is the more immediate first strike deadline. I am concerned that there may be some very disappointed people whose objective was to obtain the first strike, myself included. I have 3 UHRs all in process all of which were order within the first hour of the UHRs release. >>

Hello, I think I saw earlier you are from Raleigh. I am too and have not received my coin either from the fist day. Wonder if there is a connection?

  • << <i>Just checked the US Mint website and it now announces that the UHR are <STRONG>Product is not available!!!!!!</STRONG> >>

they might be changing the price

  • << <i>I just checked my status via the phone-auto status check. It had changed and said "additional credit card chacking is being done for your protection". Oh great. My CC pre-auth fell off today after 4 weeks. What now? So I stayed on the line to talk to a rep. Fortunately, I got one of the few nice ladies. We laughed a bit, she did some pecking around in the system, and then she said "well, it looks like it is shipping today. Would you like the tracking number?" I GOT A TRACKING NUMBER!!!!! I GOT A F&%$IN TRACKING NUMBER!!!!! We laughed and she said she couldn't wait until this was all over. I said, "me, too".

I think you'll get your coins before the 11th, barring something terrible happening, just keep them in the box for the FS and it won't matter when you send them in. Your right I think some folks will miss out, especially if they ordered a few days after the in ital date. I would assume most serious flippers bought the first day though. Me, I thought it over and I'm not going to send mine in. I think it would grade out perfectly, but I'm keeping it anyway so FS doesn't matter to me. Besides it looks great in the OGP. I'm not a hater though, I hope everyone on the forum that send it in gets a 70.

    It's not a dimple.
    It might be a scratch.
    It might be grease.
It's color is a bit darker than the gold, and reddish brown too. At one end it is blackish gray.
    FBB variety (Full Belly Button)

Here is the best close up I could get.
    Notice the wire rim.

    image

On more places than shown on the rim, plus in a couple of places on the field, appear to have grease marks.

On the inside of the wooden box, press on the wooden piece the coin sits in along the edge that traces the front edge of the box - that should gently flip the coin up.

My coin showed up yesterday - very exciting!!

I am very happy with it -

I did see one of the Smithsonian coins before they closed the exhibit - and for some reason, this coin in hand is much smaller than I recall. (Perhaps it is from looking at the giant picture on the cover of Breen's Encyclopedia for so many years...)

As a guy who does not collect moderns, I am very happy with the condition of my example, which is to say that I have not scrutinized it for grease dimples. In the left obverse field, I do observe some noticeable die polishing lines - not Barber/Morgan coinage extreme, but visible to the unaided eye at 12 inches from just the right angle in just the right light - any one else have these? I am on set working for the next few days, but I will post pics if anyone still cares by next week.

You know? My other thought about this coin, is that for all the Moy bashing that goes on (in this thread alone...!) the guy did oversee a pretty remarkable issue with the UHRDE. I remember hoping a few years ago they would do something like this for MMVII to mark the design's 100th anniversary but such was not the case - back then, it was inconceivable that my collection would house such a special coin today!

All in all I say job well done!

True, and the slab of wood is only attached by magnets. You can lift it out of the box and see the reverse of the coin without removing it from the wood, or push it through from the back to pop it out. Be careful.
  • I love the new coin. But I'm at a loss...how does one photograph this sucker?? The Ultra High Relief has so many different "looks." Adjust lighting one way, it's a proof. Adjust it another way, it's a mess! No matter how I tried, I just couldn't seem to get it right.

And now...to grade, or not to grade? That is the question! image Any suggestions for a novice?

PS. Following pictures are all the same coin, just with different lighting conditions and camera settings (Auto, Indoor, and/or macro).

If you have opened the box and looked at the coins are they still FS eligible?

I think I do, too. But in grading, are Business Strikes held to the same scrutiny as Uncirculated and Proof coins? I'm a total novice, so I have no idea. I'm under the impression Business Strikes do not use highly-polished dies. Could that explain it and would they affect the overall grade?

My wife said the coin arrived this morning. She was out doing errands and came back....there it lie next to the front door. She said she opened it and the coin was loose in the box (still in the capsule). I asked her how it looked and she said it looked great. I guess I will have to wait until I get home to check it out. If it is that good, I will send it off for grading.

are you kidding - no harm done - I love it! It looks like a color progression project in a university art and design class I had a long time ago except the subject is much more interesting. No all I want to see it in blue light, red light and yellow light and all scaled increments between the colors!
