One of the rarest of all presidential inaugural medals (Warren Harding's first inaugural, in silver) was listed in an auction that doesn't usually have a lot of numismatic stuff. It was a super-featured item, with a huge description, great pictures, and even a video, all capped off with references to recent auctions that showed -- correctly -- that it should be worth $30,000. It was a great writeup. I recognized the rarity, was impressed at the auction house for getting everything right, and moved right on past because I don't collect inaugural medals and I wasn't interested in shelling out $30,000+ for something I didn't care about.

Last weekend I remembered to check what happened to it.

    It sold for under $10,000.

    Aargh!

I also missed a neat broadstruck error which I thought I would win as I had a hefty reserve on it. Well my phone rang 15 minutes before the end of the auction and I walked away from the PC. It's been almost a month and I'm still kicking myself! image

Thanks guys, I'm looking at an item that I can't entirely afford right now for the upcoming Heritage Long Beach auction. But it's an excellent example for the grade, so I think I'll have to find a way now or regret it!

I do wish I had bid on the Silver Brenner Lincoln Centennial Medal that was on ebay a few months ago. It sold for $1650, and in hindsight, I wish I had bid on it.

    I haven't even been watching live auctions lately;
If I watch I am to tempted to bid and I have no money for purchasing.
If I watch and don't bid I see smoething I want sell for less than I would have paid.

Thought I would be back in the buying arena after the land is paid off next month, but now the company wants me to go back to Macau in December.

I guess I will have to concentrate on Philippine coins for a while and maybe Pandas.

"Conder" is a type of token, nothing to do with the bird. But im sure you were just kidding. By the way, that eagle looks to be straight from the 1792 half disme. Very yummy!!!

Well, I have zero tokens but the one you just showed would make me spill the beans and toss some milk to make it my first. image

I recently got outbid on an Old Rattler holder holding a decent classic head half eagle due to a bidding snafu on Teletrade. image

Never bid against yourself with single increments. The system will automatically increase the current bid. You must bid by at least two increments to avoid bidding against yourself. While I was trying to figure this out I was out bid at the last second.

In Britain, they are known as 18th Century Provincial tokens.
Collectors in the United States have adopted the name of one of the
first catalogers of the series, one James Conder of Ipswich

If you want to read more about Conder's

Today is a new day and I still want this tokenimage

Several classic Commems from Larry Shepherds collection which was sold by Superior on 8/11/91. I had watched the first serious correction in the coin market (1990) in MY experience and had had my first child roughly a year before the auction so I stayed away from the coins. I still pull out the catalogue and drool. The Antietam, the Bay Bridge, the Connecticut, the New Rochelle, the Norfolk and several of the Oregon's just about make me pee my pants when I look at them.

A well-known dealer had a 1796 half dollar at a recent Baltimore show. He wanted to make a quick flip on the piece, and the price for a collector, like me, (but not for a dealer) was fair. I just could not put the trigger because I didn't have the money. A few weeks earlier I had purchased an 1808 quarter eagle in a similar grade.

As a type collector I know that the 1808 quarter eagle is rarer than the 1796-7 half dollar type, but the half dollar is more popular and has a bigger reputation. So what can I say? The half dollar would have given me a chance of completing my half cent trough silver dollar type set, which is a huge achievement. But you never know what will be offered in the future. I’m still a ways from completing the early gold type set so perhaps the 1808 quarter eagle could have waited. image
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I've seen the VHS box that it's in (at a local coin dealer). From what I can remember the price is pretty ridiculous, so I was never tempted to buy it.
