Just won a few more PSA 6's, most notably a Hickman and Feathers.
I'm up to 20% now... yahoo!
    Scans when I get them.
  • Man I love this thread!

Killer cards everyone has been posting.

    stown,
I realize that Im paying more by crossing PSA and GAI cards, But thats the only game in town. I have picked up a few Raw cards, but thats always risky business. Most are almost always overgraded. At least with PSA and GAI cards I kinda know where the card stands.

My first crossover of 19 cards has arrived. I will be submitting the Thorpe and Luckman with the next batch.

    Very odd edit, Jake4Pack.

In case anyone was wondering, he said something along the lines of paying $300 for it raw...

    Reese, be careful.

    Thanks Stown!

This was the post: "I spent 300.00 on this card raw. Would like to get at least that. That price would include priority insured shipping. Paypal is jake4cubs@hotmail.com Thanks!"

I think he was trying to PM me and posted here instead. Trust me I am being very careful image

    Thanks John.
I have to admitt, your cards in those SGC holders sure stand out with the contrasting background and look great.
The four horsemen card really looks sharp.
    Good luck with your set.

My latest addition to the set.
I am looking to do the set in PSA 6, but this auction and one for a 6 ran at the same time, so i figured I send an extra 10 bucks and get a 7.
Also fills my Heisman set - nice.

  • << <i>i finally got around to scanning some cards. i wish there was a thread like this one when i was putting this set together. i'm itching to put another set together but i traded about almost 40% of the set (my doubles) that i was thiking about completing. but now i have too many irons in the fire and not enough cash. i like seeing your latest pick ups though. i'm always looking to upgrade my set so if anyone has any 7's laying around let me know.

this was my first one bought raw cause he was a golden domer, probably about 15 years ago.
    image

this was my first graded and i was hooked probably about 10 years ago, its just a great looking card, i'm sure the scanner won't do it justice.
    image

these are some of the others, i hope to scan more and add them. bought the berwanger and oliphant raw at the last national in A.C.

Hi all, I got a couple more QBs in the mail today:

    image

    image

You know I have to add a few pictures of the greatest QB in Bears history:

    image

    image

Here's a picture of Luckman trying to cover Don Hutson. I'd like to see Manning or Brady try to cover Moss or Owens, LOL.

Nice Luckman photos! I read a book recently on old school football and there was some stuff about Luckman, a truly great QB of the time. Im not sure if many people know this or not-I certainly didnt, but that guy dealt with a lot of racial flak from the fans in his day, him being Jewish he was subjected to some really ignorant stuff but always played well through it. Definately a Chicago Bear great!
  • recbballrecbball Posts: 1,521 ✭✭✭
    Hi Perkdog,

It's funny you bring up the Jewish slandering Luckman put up with. I just watched a movie this morning, "SCHOOL TIES" with Brendon Frazier and Matt Damon that covers the same thing. As I was watching the movie I wondered if they got the story from Luckman's life.
Glad you liked the pictures. The thing that amazed me when reading about Luckman was what a great DB he was. I'm waiting on another Bear DB in the mail, although most know him for his running with the ball, Red Grange. Scans when he comes in.

    Tom

  • perkdogperkdog Posts: 30,855 ✭✭✭✭✭
Tom I saw that movie "School Ties" as well, great movie BTW! I think the prejudice that he was subjected to most likely gets overlooked due to the more common known racism associated with African American athletes, its a shame but at least Luckman was given an opportunity to compete.. He was a fierce competitor who used the slander to fuel his drive to succeed. The Book I read was "Monsters of the Midway" I have been reccomending it to a bunch of the Vintage Football guys here- you can pick a copy up on Ebay for under $10, it mainly focuses on Bronko Nagurski but there is a ton of other players mentioned in the book as well. The game was barbaric back in the 1940's and almost anything went.
  • Dumb question from someone looking to get into this set: The color picture of each player...is it hand painted or is it a photograph? I can tell the black and white background is a photograph, and it seems that the players are painted work of art like the 50, 51, 52 bowmans football set. Can someone please verify please?

    Thanks!

I just added Otto, Mr. Graham if you are nasty, to my set... whichs sits at 33% currently.

    image

Finding well centered copies has made this set slow going to be certain. Even this Graham has a tilt to it, although not as pronounced as it appears in the scan for some reason.

Has anyone else noticed these cards seem to be something of an optical illusion where they appear more tilted to the naked eye than they measure out?

I'm having the same problems with centering.

And IMO, they appear tilted because of the college logo. When there's a thicker top border, the tilt appears to be more obvious.

    Reese,

Where did you find the Gallarneau? You've beat me to the punch at least 3 or 4 times in the past several months. I'm not even seeing the cards that you're finding. What are you searching for on E-Bay (or do you not want to share your secrets)?

    Greg,

The Hugh Gallarneau was a BIN for $29. It looked like it was just listed so I think I got lucky.

I do six searches everyday using these keywords:
    1955 Topps auto*
    1955 Topps sign*
    55 topps auto*
    55 topps sign*
    all american auto*
    all american sign*

BTW, there is a PSA/DNA 4 Doc Blanchard online now that I need for this set and my Heisman set. Any chance you could back off that one for me? image

i saw a nice run of PSA 7's and 8's last night on ebay and the prices were very strong. i got to upgrade one of mine but the prices for the ones i need to upgrade were consistently over $31+ without shipping. that looks good for my set but i feel for you guys trying to complete this set at a reasonable price in PSA 7. are the prices for 6's just as strong? i haven't been paying attention to those.

    good luck

I set the snipe yesterday at $25.00 for 20 psa 7s I needed and only got one, but that's one more closer to completion.
I'm trying to do the set on the cheap and mostly bidding on sixes. For a common psa 6 I have seen it go from $18.00-$25.00.
The one I got yesterday put me at 60%image

it's a great set and seems to be gettign more and more popular if that can be. i finished my set in i think 06 with a psa 7 don hutson what a great card i remember the first and last card i got to complete it. and i was getting 6's for about $9-$13 and 7's for about $16-20. so its nice to see them going up but i feel for you guys putting it together now. its a great set and i loved putting it together. i was going to do another on, i had about 40+ doubles in psa 5-6 from my first, but i traded them for some t206's. i now have 4 doubles from upgrades.

its like the 52 topps baseball set, they seem to have taken a jump in the last year or so. where you could get commons in psa 5-6 for about $12 now there $18+. i have slowed on my low number set since then, i'm picking up more raw now but those prices are up too. how about the decent raw 55 AA are those prices up as well?
