  • Glad to see this thread adding more 55 Collectors! Nice sets going and the Auto cards are very cool.
I finally recueved the Sid Luckman.

I also just pulled the trigger on a nicely centered Jim Thorpe PSA 6.5
I almost had me a 6.5 Don Hudson Rookie as well, but that fell through.

I will post the Thorpe Rookie when I recieve it.

I also sent my first 20 for crossover to the SGC holders I want my set in. I wil post results when they arrive as well.

  • I love those autographed ones, very nice stuff guys!!!

The closest thing I got to those cards is this one, does mine count as an All-American? image

  • In addition to the demand for the card as part of this set, the Bertelli is also part of the Heisman Winners RC set and went to Notre Dame so those factors creat additional demand for this card. Just a couple of things to keep in mind.

  • Wow! Thats amazing to get those auto's TTM. Ace Parker 95 years old? Still signing and replying to fan mail!
The Parker Auto looks legit, but whats the odds on getting Autopen sigs?

Wow! Nice sig for a 95 year old!
  • That is a cool card!

I wonder what kind of memories you bring back to these guys when they see the cards with them and their friends in the backfround, pretty cool.

Ace is a great signer through the mail. He charges $10, but I believe it is well worth it. I have had him sign some things in the past and they have all passed PSA/DNA inspection but I guess you can never really be 100% sure unless it was signed in person. I have three Parker autos now, all of which have a few differences making me believe he is still signing through the mail and not using an autopen.

  • Somewhere, I have a Bertelli that I got autographed in the late 1980's....
any idea what that is worth? I am going to guess it is in excellent condition....

i don't collect these and would like to get it someone who needs it.

Could even trade for 1971 Kelloggs if anyone is interested.

I actually just bought a Bertelli off ebay a couple weeks ago. I probably overpaid, but I paid $120 for it. Mine is unfortunately trimmed though, so I would be interested. If you have scans my email is rcover213@yahoo.com

Does anyone have a Dudley and/or Lujack that are in PSA 4 to 6 condition? I'm looking for a card of each player to get autographed...so I'm not too concerned about condition or centering... All I ask is that the card have decent eye appeal and is free of any severe surface damage.

    Thanks.

I just read a book about Bronko Nagurski and Beattie Feathers was mentioned in the book- he was the first Running back to ever gain a thousand yards in a season, it took him the next 5 seasons after that to gain another 1K yards- he got pounded and because of his small frame ( looks that way in that card ) he couldnt take the viciousness of Pre War Football. Great Auto though!

Awesome autographs - thanks for sharing! I can't wait to get the Tiger Hill and Franco that I bought from Jason. I just sent my 55 Topps AA to Ace Parker today to be autographed. I still need to find a nice raw Dudley and Lujack....grrrr...

I scanned the photos out of a book I bought when I was a kid:

THE CHICAGO BEARS - AN ILLLUSTRADED HISTORY by Richard Whittingham copyright 1982

He later had another book: THE BEARS - A 75-YEAR CELEBRATION copyright 1994

The fist book has alot more photos from the early years of football.
    I'm glad you liked them,
    Tom

Thank You Tom! I love old photo's of these "Real" players, I have learned alot over the past few months about these Old Timers and have a new found respect for the toughness these guy's had. Such a vicious era that Pre-War age of pro football.

These 55's have some of the greatest players in it, I like the cards but I dont love them as much as the early Bowmans.
  • recbballrecbball Posts: 1,521 ✭✭✭
The book about Bronko Nagurski illustrated that era excellently I thought.
When I was a kid in grade school I would write term papers on the history of the Chicago Bears LOL,
and that first book was my primary source.
The '55 AA set was a set I looked at when I was a kid and thought i would have to be rich to own. I bought a few key cards this week with my stimulus money - thanks George Bush - and am going to tackle this set slowly over the rest of the year. Just tring to get cards in PSA 5-7.
If I complete the set I won't even be in the top 20 going that, but i don't care, i think it will be fun an inexpensive to try and complete that way.
  • perkdogperkdog Posts: 30,635 ✭✭✭✭✭
Good for you Tom, Im sure you will have fun doing that! I am about ready to lower my PSA 7 standard and start picking up 52 Bowmans in the 4-7 range soon so I can at least get 3/4 of the set! Some might be near immposible...

  • Wow! those old B & W Photos are the cats ass! Very Cool!

Recball, Looks like you have been busy with some nice pick-ups for your set.
Ive yet to get my stimuluis money, but I have already had to slow down a bit.
Heres the Thorpe I picked up. The Hudson Rookie is the last "Big Card" I need.
Then its on to the Semi-Stars and the some of the SP cards.

Beings I have begun to cross my set to SGC Holders. Which one of you "Mangey Polecats" snagged that SGC 84 Herman Hickman #1 from
me on ebay the other day? That card was a real beauty and I really wanted it. Come on Fess up who's got it?

Wow that is a nice Thorpe. Why did that only get a 6.5

    Thanks,

    Rob

    Looking for:
    Heisman Rookies

  • Why a 6.5? It does have a slight tilt to the centering and keep in mind it is PSA.
Once I cross it to SGC we will see how accurate the card grade really is.
Either way it is one of the nicest centered one's I had seen and The price was right.

  • stownstown Posts: 11,321 ✭✭✭
If you're crossing everything to that other company, I suggest you stop buying cards already slabbed by PSA.

You're paying a premium and have more competition.

The centering on these is brutal, but especially with the few vertical cards in the set, of which Thorpe is the most prominent name. Here is the one I picked up for my set (PSA 5 & PSA 6)... the surface is comparatively rough, the slab cracked in transit, but man I love the centering!

    Keep them coming guys!
