Thanks for reading. I debated writing that about esaslo, but thought it was an interesting story and thought it touched on the fact that these are just things and people are far more important. My hope is the story was tastefully done and was more about him than the card.

There was a Maddux for sale at the same time as the Ripken and that one also shows the cropping variations. After submitting my research to PSA, they have agreed to label the card as the authentic autograph from the set. I'll be sending in both cards later this month and will post my results. One of the cards will eventually make it back to eBay in its new, properly labeled and graded form.

    Again, thanks for reading!

I think the article was definitely tastefully done. It really does hit home that there are a lot more important things out there than pieces of cardboard. Was definitely sad as he was only 29, seems way too young to go.

That's awesome that you've gotten PSA to correctly recognize these, great work! Hopefully this will help people save a few bucks and not get scammed on aftermarket auto's on this card! I was definitely skeptical on this card and it's legitimacy, but with the work you've done, I am definitely more confident in purchasing one in the future, if any more legit ones show up.

Wow i had no idea about the history and variations of that card. Very well written article, and I'm glad you are the one who ended up with the cards!

Does anyone know why or when the 1994 Finest was removed from the Ripken Basic set composition?
  • mariotownmariotown Posts: 509 ✭✭

<< <i>Does anyone know why or when the 1994 Finest was removed from the Ripken Basic set composition? >>

Probably because it was from a subset and they don't consider it a base card. By that reasoning, the 1993 Finest should be removed as well since it is an All-Star card.

Did anyone happen to notice that a new 1985 Topps #30 PSA 10 just popped in the latest group sub? I hear it's going to hit the open market once it arrives.
  • tunahead08tunahead08 Posts: 1,063 ✭✭✭
Well that sucks... an inverse for the 1990 Donruss Blue/White Test Ripken does exist... with Ripken on the blue side and Jose DeLeon on the white side. Also, his Bonus MVP card is in the Red/Red Test set.

    I need more money image

Yeah someone found a 132 card sheet for the Blue/White test, they're going to be auctioning it sometime in the next few weeks. You can read more about it and see a video and some images here

The winner is the same guy who paid 202 for the 88 Topps last week. The man is on a mission!

    I collect Cal Ripken cards, T206, E95, E210, R319.

The basic Topps cards are always a little stronger, but those prices are more than double VCP average.
  • jeffcbayjeffcbay Posts: 8,949 ✭✭✭✭
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE seeing this, but it's still crazy.

Even the 1982 Topps Traded in PSA 10 was supposed to go down in price after the big population boom, but it's still seeing $1400 prices.

Bingo! This is a nice one... no orange stripe on his leg, and no fish eye in the black. Nice!

that's a pretty beautiful looking card. Would love to see the upper right corner in better detail -- but centering, focus and clarity are all there
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • jbaarch2jbaarch2 Posts: 13 ✭✭
Sold. Looks like for the full $450. Supply and demand. The corner does appear iffy in the photo, but who knows. I'll take my "orange line".

    Some numbers for comparison:

    1985 Ripken 21/707 PSA Graded (2.9%) are PSA 10. All 1985 Topps is 6,848/93,208 (7.3%) PSA 10.

    Interestingly the 1982 Ripken is 269/22,610 (1.1%) in PSA 10. All 1982 Topps 7,924/57,186 (13.8%) PSA 10.

    1988 Ripken is 29/189 (15.3%) PSA 10. All 1988 Topps is 3,532/8,988 (39.2%) PSA 10.

    2001 Ripken is 22/76 (28.9%) PSA 10. All 2001 Topps (17.9%) is 614/3,420 PSA 10.

Looks worthwhile to take a stab at a few boxes of 88 and 01, whereas you could chase raw 82 and 85 for a while before one grades out.
  • jeffcbayjeffcbay Posts: 8,949 ✭✭✭✭
I was lucky enough to pop my own 2001 in PSA 10. That almost makes up for the hundreds of dollars I spent chasing the 1988 before I finally just purchased a 10, and after spending well over a grand in busting and subbing trying to get a 1985 in 10. I subbed about 20 1988s and got nothing higher than a 9. Brutal.

$450 is great for that card, that makes VCP on our's value go up! image

    Jeff,

I am not sure what I missed. The Ryan came back a 10 and the Rose/Henderson a 8. I guess I will have to look at the others I have to submit.

I just got back a pretty rare card. It is the 1993 U.S. Playing Card Wild Card Cal Ripken, Jr. Autographed. This is the one from the deck. PSA labeled it with "AUTO" as part of the variety. It is also part of the master set now.

HOLY $#!%!!!! I just got some insane poppage!!

    1 1 21647502 GEM MINT 10 2001 TOPPS HERITAGE 316 CAL RIPKEN JR. Card (Now a Pop 10)
2 1 21647503 GEM MINT 10 2001 TOPPS HERITAGE CHROME PARTIAL CP1 CAL RIPKEN JR. CHROME PARTIAL Card (Now a Pop 4)

    BOOM!!!!!

Even crazier... I picked these two cards up in an obscure Ripken lot that PWCC had for sale a few months ago. I won this lot for $88 shipped, and I have already made my money back from selling some of the other cards that were in this lot that I didn't want in my PC. These two cards were SGC and BGS crack-outs.

I'll scan these when they arrive. WOW!!! image

That's just what they call them for some reason, I have no idea why. That's why they have "CP" numbers.
