Matt, let's just say there was a "find" and leave it at that. I don't want to reveal my source on those because he said there's more where that came from. I just hope my bank will let me withdraw that kind of scratch all at once.
You are not kidding about the cost of displaying items vs. the purchase price. I know some of my roop binders are worth more than the sets. Regardless, if you like to display your items it is the sacrifice you make.
I dont want to seem paranoid, but do you guys ever get nervous about fires, theft, etc. Losing your collections you have worked so hard for? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I think about that all the time , But not because of fires or theft or floods or anything like that . . .
The one and only fear I have is one day leaving the hose and something crazy getting into my dog , or the cats , Like a mental kinda I'm gonna get even with you kinda thing for leaving me alone .
I have this vision of me walking into the house and the dog is laying on the ground with my Babe Ruth baseball in his mouth , Licking it . . . . chewing it , gnawing on it , like a ham bone !!

Welcome to the club. I too have several super cheap sets (mostly late 80s/early 90s) that are only $5-$10 book value (even after twenty years!) and yet I still keep ALL my sets in binder/pages. It's the only way to go if you want to be able to look at your collection whenever you want.

Interesting you mention that.
I went away for 3 days - and my son came also - so the house was unattended.
I even had a dream it was robbed!!!
I have an alarm to Protection One but?
I've had dreams from time to time that something bad happens - I thought I was the only one?
Slightly hungover, I decided to transfer my working 1954 Topps set from card savers into a binder.
I've been working on it forever, along with the others, but never really put a priority on it.
After randomly purchasing this Ted,
I started to have a renewed interest in it.
I'm currently at 67% and missing only two big stars, Aaron and Kaline, with the remainder being commons or minor stars.
Since I'm starting to hit the final stretch of the '55 TAAs, need to find another excuse to blow money on old cardboard...
Thanks for looking.
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

For asinine prices on the TAAs, I deserve a beater set or two or three..

I'm new to the boards and really enjoy reading the various posts. I started collecting cards as a kid in 1971 and quit around 1977, just started collecting again last year.
TJMAC, can't get over how nice your collection is. I don't know if this question has been asked, but how long did it take you to accumalate such a fine collection?
Here is the link to my collections on the web. Highly unorganized just the way I like it. Some day I just need my dream room to display it all. For now its all on the web. Take a look around thousands of autographs to look at. And my T206 in my sub album!

I originally collected as a kid on and off from 1980 to about 1992. I got back into the hobby around 2000 and bought my first PSA card - a 1964 Al Kaline PSA 6. Since then, I have sold the majority of my original collection and all my toys and put most of the money into graded cards and some select vintage sets. I also collect Topps Base sets. So, I have built my current collection in the last 7 years. I have a bunch of new cards since this post started that I have to put in my photo bucket. So, I will add more pictures in the near future.
By the way, what do you collect?
Thanks to all who are keeping this great thread going!!!
As for my collection, I need 1 more card (Seaver) to complete the 1967 set, I've completed the 1969, 1971 and 1973 thru 1990 Topps Basic Baseball sets. My next endeavor will be the completion of the 1954 set and to collect more graded cards for the 1971 set. I've bought an awful lot in the last 2 years and need to concentrate a little more on selling for next year.
I will try and see if we can revive this thread again. I was updating my photobucket for insurance purposes and thought I would share some more pictures of my growing 50's and 60's collection. Happy New Year everyone!!!!
I will post updated picks of my 67's and 68's later this week.
TJMAC, all I can say is I'm very envious! I love the cards and the organization. One of these days I hope to get that organized and focused. You must have a bundle in all your stuff.
Thanks guys. I love to see other people's stuff, so it is nice to share mine with others as well.
Leadoff, I have spent quite a bit of money on my collection, but I carefully budget my money, so I don't dip into my savings, other investments and family income. I have a part time town board position that I take half of my money from to spend on cards. That way very little of my regular income is used for the hobby. With a wife that works part time and two young children, I have to be careful.
I guess the focus comes from my personality. I like to be organized and try to spend my money wisely. Well, as wise as you can be for spending money on cardboard cards. Also, I prefer to buy more collectible grades that present well, which allows me to buy more cards. Vintage cards with a little to moderate wear, fit the era and I like to think they were owned by a kid who enjoyed and took care of them.
All of my graded cards, some of my autographed jersies, my pack display, my Red Sox retired numbers display, my Curt Schilling auto, and a close-up of my Musial because I freakin love that card!
Besides collection vintage PSA cards and Topps base sets, I have been trying to compile key cards from various non Topps sets from 1981 on. I am trying to collect 27 or 36 cards depending on the year and assortment of cards I like from each year. Why 27 or 36? Because they fit evenly into 9 card pages. I have the key cards PSA graded i.e. 1987 Bonds, 1983 Sandberg, 1983 Gwynn, 1985 Clemens, etc.
Up to about 1991, I will collect most of the main issues and after that I am selective based on appearance. A lot of the Chrome and super shiny stuff is of no interest to me. I also do not like sets that consist of cards without a natural playing background i.e. Studio and some of the chrome stuff.
The players I choose are based on if they are a Superstar/HOFer and personal preference. Here are some samples:
I really like some of the action shot from the 1981 Donruss set. My favorites are Garvey, Rose and Gary Carter.
1981 Fleer is not my favorite set, but the cards have a uniform look when displayed together.
I don't like 1982 Donruss as much as 1981, but they are still nice. My favorites are the Rose and Brett. The Brett is similar to his 1979 Topps.
1983 Fleer is a nice looking set. The Sanberg (not displayed) is a beautiful card. I love the blue uniform against the tanish border. I have it in a PSA 9.
The 1986 Fleer set is very condition sensistive and has some great action shot. I really like the Clemens, Mattingly and Puckett.
1987 Donruss is the first packs I bought when I got serious about collecting as a kid. I think the black borders make for a sharp appearance. I really like the Mattingly, Clemens and McGwire from this set.
I remember Fleer as the premium issue before Upper Deck came out. Though, I always preferred Donruss, the 1987 Fleer set was sharp. My favorites were the Boggs, Puckett and Maddux Update.
I owned a ton of 1988 Donruss!!! I know a lot of people don't like this issue, but it holds a special place in my heart. Actually, there are a lot of great player shots in this set.
1991 Score is one of my favorite sets. The borders are very sharp and I love the different colors. Also, there are great action shots and a nice selection of rookies - Chipper, Mussina, Bagwell, Pudge. Frank Thomas, Bonds and Sosa are my favorite cards.
I remember when 1991 Stadium Club came out. They really took photography to another level. These cards display beautifully in pages.
1993 Ultra is my favorite modern set. The photograpy is top notch and there are many great action shots.
Here are a few more of my favorite 90's sets:
1994 Donruss
1995 Upper Deck
1997 Donruss
1998 Bowman
Well, I know modern cards don't get much love, but I enjoy the full history of the game and really like seeing all the great players over the years. It is also interesting to see how the quality of cards have changed - maybe for the better or worse depending on your school of thought.
Comments
One thing and a bit or irony for the dedicated collector who wants to display their collectibles...
it can may cost MORE to display stuff than the value of the items.
Professional framing - e.g. it cost me way more to frame a piece of Topps art than the cost of the item from the toppsvault!

Sorry, I get a little punchy from giddy excitement the first months or so of the NFL season. I'm just sooooo happy!

The finish work is really good - the only thing is color selection - I - personally - like darker colors.
I have my office in the house in a darker shade of green - I wish it was larger and had some well made built-ins like Danp has!
I've been procrastinating getting a display cabinet and I need another bat rack.
I could sure use some more shelf space also.
These kinds of threads make me smile!
Thanx for sharing guys

Indeed, most collectors (me) can't afford to do a 1954 set in any grade.
You know, I too would love to show off my collection but I'm not really sure how.
