  • << <i>Clemaz,

Regarding the 1977 Yaz cards it looks like one is Topps Cloth, OPC and the regular issue. >>

Correct. I have just 3 more Yaz cards to complete the basic set. They shouldn't be to difficult
    to find, just haven't really looked. I need 81 Fleer #638, 82 Donruss #74 and 82 Topps #650
PSA 9 or 10. I've kind of gotten bored with the Yaz cards, I've been trying to finish the HOF
RC Post War set. Thanks, Dan

  • Have few autograph pics in my collection. >>

Nice Red Sox collection. Tony C was my favorite player when I was a kid, love the autographed picture. Dan

  • << <i>Man these rooms are AMAZING!!!!!

It makes me want to get off my butt and finish my office/display room. I started last fall designing and building an office in my house for my White Sox collection. I have started a collection of 2005 game used White Sox players bats. I need 6 more for the 2005 roster. I have not decided what I will do for the pitchers yet. (Single signed balls or a group ball.

The room is not near done but these pictures will give you an idea on the built in wall desk. I will built custome displays for the bats, helmets, jerseys, etc.

Here is the design for the desk book shelf section >>

Cabinets are great! Add the new pictures when the room is done, too bad you have to put the White Sox stuff in such
a nice room! Just kidding, die hard Red Sox fan here. Dan

I don't have a complete 1975 Topps set. Also, I have to replace the Yaz it is in a pro holder. What can I say I was naive when I bought it.

Here are my 1977's, 1978's and 1979's. The 77's are tough to find. I am still looking for the Fingers and Perry in an 8. I also need the Stargell in a 7 or 8 for 1979. The centering is tough on the Stargell from that year.

Very nice collection TJMAC!! Incidentally, do you store your 3-ring binders flat or standing up?

Standing up, put I keep them together pretty tight. Look at the beginning of the thread and you will see my binders displayed. Thanks Bob.

Oh yes, I did see that. I have a few sets in binders and I store them standing up, but it seems that the spine of the binder is under some stress because the vinyl covering has become very wavy.
BTW, That 1985 Topps Mattingly has always been 1 of my favorite modern cards!

Well, I hope to make a 1974-present run of Topps myself. I got someone here I'm PMing about getting some sweet 1976/1977 Topps sets! Then I can just do 1974 and 1975 one at a time. I hope to get the 1975 for Christmas (I don't see any other way of affording it).

Wow. There are some AMAZING sets here. It's also neat to see what everyone collects and how they display it. For financial reasons I don't yet have a place of my own, but that should change by the end of the year. One of the biggest things I'm looking for, aside from afordability, is a fairly large room where I can display all of my different collections. I don't have photos because it would take forever to photograph them all, but I have every single base and traded Topps set from 1980 through today. I even have parallels such as the 1993 and 1998 Inaugural sets, the 1992-1994 Topps Gold sets (factory gold for 1992 AND winner, as well as traded gold varities for those years and the black gold varieties), in addition to a large number of insert sets too. Of course in recent years that has become next to impossible, but I'm trying to keep up where I can.

This recent Derek Jeter BS going on in 2007 Topps has actually helped me out quite a bit. People are buying so many boxes of 2007 Topps Series 1 looking for this Jeter card that they wind up with tons of inserts and spares. With Beckett's online price guide not having actual prices for ANY 2007 Topps cards, there's no "base" price that the sellers are looking for. They're just looking to get rid of extra inventory. Therefore, I've been able to pick up a LOT of complete 2007 insert sets lately which is a big bonus. I should be pretty caught up when Series 2 comes out later on.

Because of all my recent purchases, I've got about 1/3rd of my collection in Binders and the rest still in their factory boxes or top loaders. I'm attempting to get everything into binders, but the cost of the pages I need and the fact that I don't have room for all of them has put that on hold. Eventually, ALL of my cards will be in binders so that at any point I can just pull out a book and look through some history.
I collect the elements on the periodic table, and some coins. I have a complete Roosevelt set, and am putting together a set of coins from 1880.

My 1957 set is pretty much all that I have left in my collection (of any value). They sure do make a nice display in home/office, I think.
  • BuccaneerBuccaneer Posts: 1,794 ✭✭
By the way, the first two displays are organized by teams. What I did was to go through each team stack and pick out the best looking cards, regardless of player or condition or value. Of course 99% of them are the full-body shots with a nice background, which I think are some of the best looking cards ever.

    Steve,

Thanks for resurrecting this thread. I love the 57's. I have been throwing around starting the top 30 from that set, but I will probably wait until I finish my 59-85 run. It is great looking at those cards in cases, they display very well. Where did you get the case that has the players names on the bottom?

Thank you for your kind words. I made those displays myself, the hard way out of frame mouldings. I think there is a thread from a couple of years ago that described how I did it. There are not as nice as a custom woodworker's display (like some of the ones we've seen in this thread) but they were fairly inexpensive to make and they work. As far as the labels, I made them myself with a label maker machine. I used the 3/4" tape that has gold letters on black.

The two that I am missing are Drysdale and Kaline (which I had in PSA 6 but sold it recently for a nice profit).

CD, great 90's Donruss collection. There are some tough pulls displayed there. I can see why it took you so long to amass such a great looking collection.

Your picture gave me a great idea. Maybe I will start a collection of hyped up prospects who never panned out. I bet that would bring back some memories for those who collected in the late 80's early 90's when there were so many guys slated to be the next big thing.
  • TJMACTJMAC Posts: 864 ✭✭
I like your idea about how you added the names to the bottom. I may end up to that to a few of my cases.

Great collections. I remember seeing this thread awhile ago and marveling at peoples displays of their collections.

I do alot of insurance work, restoration after fires, flooding, trees and cars hitting houses etc. Ive seen so many peoples houses after fires, people who lost everything. I think the hardest one was christmas eve a few years ago, stepping over a burned up tree with all the burned presents under it with the mom and kids outside...anyway

It has always made me nervous to keep my stuff on the walls. I keep it all in a 6' tall fire safe in my basment, bolted to the ground. I take them out and look at them alot, show it to friends on occasion when my wife brings up my geeky football card collection, but all in all, Im too nervous to display it.

I dont want to seem paranoid, but do you guys ever get nervous about fires, theft, etc. Losing your collections you have worked so hard for?

Not really. They are just plastic and cardboard. Besides, I do have an insurance rider to cover them.
  • PubliusPublius Posts: 1,306 ✭✭
I have an insurance rider on my sports colleciton as well, but some of my cards are irreplaceable. How hard would it be to get them all back even with an insurance payout, how much of it is one of a kind.

I dont know, like I said, maybe Im paranoid, maybe Im missing out on not displaying something I love, but I worry about it.
  • TJMACTJMAC Posts: 864 ✭✭
Publius, I see where you are coming from, but I get a great deal of enjoyment displaying my cards. I really like going into my card room and admiring all of the displays. It is not the same when they are stuck in a box. So, I just took out an insurance policy in case something happens to them. There is nothing in my collection that can't be replaced although some of the cards were given to me by special people. Oh well, it is a chance worth taking to me.

Before I started collecting cards I collected autographed paintings, mini helmets, etc because I never could understand having cards and storing them away in a safe. Then I decided to build some display cases and buy baseball cards to put in them. I display all my cards in order around the room starting with 1887 OJ's and ending with future HOF'ers. I have a video camera that would catch anyone entering the room (from any entrance area), each case has a sensor that would immediately set off an alarm (monitored 24 hours a day), glass breaks, etc. The whole system cost me about $2,000 (I installed it myself). I also have an insurance policy that I added to my homeowners that costs me around $200 more per year. It seems like a lot, but I now feel a lot better about the cards being displayed. My wife had a girl only demonstration in that room and even all the women were looking around at the displays. Again, it may be just me, but I wouldn't collect any cards if I were to just store them in a safe. BTW, I have a few cards worth over $5k each. For these, I bought cheap PSA and SGC cards, broke them out of the case (without destroying the case) and put copies of the expensive cards in the PSA/SGC case. Unless you were a real collector you would never know the difference!!
  • PubliusPublius Posts: 1,306 ✭✭
You guys are right. I saw alot of pictures of peoples displays, I immediatly recognize half the cards because I have them, Largent, payton, sayers, riggins, etc.. all great cards.

I think I will start to build some displays for my sets. The security thing is a cool set up, Im an electrician so I can do all that myself. I remember seeing on of your pictures, and you had a mirror and I could see the magnetic door contact on the reflection, I was impressed.

I also collect presidential land grants, from Jefferson all the way, so fat to Lincoln and counting. Just got a James K Polk to fill a hole. Anyway, I have a presidents room in my house with oil painting of the presidnets circling the room and all of my land grants on the wall. I show it off with pride when people show up, and I dont have any qualms about a fire if it happened (of course i would be jumping out the window in my underwear with jefferson under one arm, and madison under the other).

I imagine I would learn to relax with the cards out on display as well. Im sure I would enjoy them more, and show them with pride.

I've already got the insurance rider, obvioulsy my house wont be burning down due to electrical fire

    thanks guys

    Thanks
  • I know what you mean about some of these collections. I saved this thread to my favorites file for ideas in the future. I have limited space to work with, but the cool thing is that I have space period. My wife is really supportive of the hobby and helped decorate the room. And since I work for an award company, most of my pictures and pieces of memoribilia have really nice plating on them.
Once everything is where I want it to be I'll take some pics to post.

  • Way too cool! I just bought my first house and the closing is this coming Friday. I've already got one of the upstairs bedrooms (It's a cape) destined as a home office and a place to house and display all of my collectibles and memorabilia. I'm just trying to figure out what color I want to paint the walls and how I want to put in the cabinets. (It currently has dormers up there, but I may take them down and just build in cabinets into the walls to house my binders, boxes and packs. I've got all of the Topps base and traded sets, as well as some parallels and insert sets, from 1980 onwards. I also have one of each wax-pack they put out in those years and figure that would make a sweet display).

One thing I'm REALLY happy with is my home-owners insurance policy. I told my insurance agent about my baseball cards, coins, elements, comic books and other memorabilia that I have which would be very expensive to replace. The agent said that in my policy, as long as I document what I own and have this housed by them, they will replace it all regardless of the cost. This is SOOOOOOOOOOO comforting to me since a lot of my stuff I really couldn't put a price on due to how much the value fluctuates and how much of a pain it would be to get it replaced. My insurance agent assured me that as long as I document what I have and have an agent document it as well, then there would be no problems replacing them.

Now I can focus my nervousness on moving into my first home. Biggest investment ever! image
I collect the elements on the periodic table, and some coins. I have a complete Roosevelt set, and am putting together a set of coins from 1880.

Downtown- the only extra packs I've got are '70 Topps, '61 Nu Card Scoops, and a '61 Scoops Football pack. '55's aren't hard, but if you're picky it can take a while. There was a huge Rosen find but most are water damaged and suffer from lack of eye appeal.

JamesGot- nice pack run! keep working backwards and you'll have an amazing display in no time. They don't get really expensive until you hit '58.
