I did not get the stain qualifier or OC. I think I understand the grade on the Butler. I’ll have to check again but I believe the centering is within the 70/30 guidelines for it to be a 7. I am surprised with both coaches that were elected, although, I do believe they are both deserving.

Is that a tiny crease next to the "85" on the back of Dick Lane?

Harold Carmichael. Wow. I’m shocked. I thought he had the slimmest chances of them all.

Yeah, stunned and, frankly, a little disappointed with the 10 old-timers. Wistert’s omission is shocking.

Oh, and Carmichael over Pearson...how does the second-team all-70s player make it in ahead of the first-team all-70s player at the same position?

I don’t think of Roger Craig as a HOFer. He had 2 huge years and a couple good ones and that’s pretty much it. Shaun Alexander, IMO, would be more deserving, as well as some other RBs. I don’t put much stock in the “he changed the game” thing, which I think is an overused notion to begin with. Plus, Lenny Moore did it way earlier anyway. But, I guess if Floyd Little’s in...

    Okay, rant over 😀.

You were right, I was wrong :) Craig didn’t get in and likely never will at this point.

Wistert not making it, to me, was as shocking as Carmichael getting in. Sadly, I think this was Whitey's last shot. I thought Branch and Nobis both had excellent chances, too. The class was overall quite a surprise.

I wouldn’t write the guys who didn’t get it off too quickly. This was a different group than usual doing the selections. And the Senior Committee isn’t going away. This year did clear out 10 guys which usually would have taken 7-8 years to get 10 guys elected under the previous system.

Panini Prizm has been the de facto choice for more recent players in the yearly award sets, e.g. Mayfield and Jackson in the Heisman set, Mahomes in the MVP set, Elliott in the ROY set, etc. Prizm seems to have gotten the majority of the market that Topps Chrome left, so in the absence of a Topps Chrome base RC for Wagner, my vote would go to Prizm. Beckett has refused to give the official RC designation to SP Authentic base cards since Upper Deck lost their NFL license in 2010 or 2011, so I don't believe PSA would allow the SP Authentic to be chosen.

I would probably select Prizm or Elite.

Thanks for putting it into perspective. I felt like they selected too many players of the more recent era. I also feel like Wistert should have been selected. Most finalists were deserving, I just feel like that they should have selected players that played in the earlier era of football. I guess it will be up to the normal committee to come through. Hoping Mecklanberg makes it soon too!

Well my HOF RC want list just took a hit. When I sold my Namath PSA 8 RC at an offer to good to pass up, I broke up the 65 set, keeping HOFers and Johnny Robinson. Of course I overlooked Hill and sold my PSA 7! After I built a great HOF set for 51 Bowman and 52 Bowman small, I sold those sets--goodbye Ed Sprinkle and Bobby Dillon! And after I sold my 74 set, I neglected to replace my Carmichael 9......dumb ass comes to mind.....Any help out there?

I think they crapped the bed on this one. Figured Pearson and Craig were highly likely.

Am as surprised as you guys by some of the selections this morning, I didn’t see these coming. I too have many cards to get now. Oh no!

The only “sure” pick I thought was Wistert and of course he didn’t make it.

Well Joe you can add me to your dumb Ars list.
Carmichael over Branch (my 1st choice) and Pearson (#2 WR choice) . ??? Not even close. I saw both play.
It's like choosing Drew Bledsoe over Brady. When Howley and L R Jordan missed I figured Nobis was a lock.
At least I have 8's of most of the newer guys.
Sprinkle and Dillon will be hard to get.
I need a new Chrystal ball.

I was fortunate to pick up everyone on the list before they came out as finalist. Still, I picked up a few extra Wistert because I thought he and Slater were the only locks on the list. My most recent purchases of a PSA 7 for Sprinkle and Hill made up for picking up the extra Wistert’s though.

Growing up in NY at hating the Jets, maybe I underrated Hill. Just did some VCP research----the last Dillon PSA 7 52 small sold 2 years ago for over a $100. "nrpstarter" on eBay seems to have guessed correctly---look at the prices for the cards he listed on eBay. $1000 or b/o for a Hill PSA 8, just for starters!

  • This Blue Ribbon committee really dropped the ball and it started with Cowher over Coryell. They didn't even get some of the Finalists right (Howely, Jordan). Carmichael over Branch or Pearson is just plain wrong. You can bet if this group hadn't "placed" Tags in there he never would have made it. This overall disappointment ranks right up there with Jerry Jones being selected. This may be the last straw for me and my visits to Canton.

I have a Covert 10, but I'd be willing to deal it for a really nice-centered 9 if anyone's interested.

In regards to the PSA 8 Winston Hill sale, P.T.Barnum got it right--"There's a SUCKER born every minute!". He sold the Sprinkle 8 as well.

Thanks, I appreciate the compliment! About 2 years ago I thought "Do I really need all this full sets?" So I sold off my 48,50,51,52 small,53 Bowman sets and went with HOF sets and NY Giants. After I sold my Namath RC, I decided to break the set, again keeping the HOFers. I tried to guess who was going to eventually get in. I got completely blindsided when the Senior's list came out in December. By then it was too late. No sign of Hill or Sprinkle. I also collect signatures of all the pro FB HOFers. I did luck out there. The only signature I couldn't find was Duke Slater, which I expected. I have a friend who is trying to put together a SIGNED RC card set. He told me a Sprinkle RC signed card sold for $1299!

Do you think they’d put it two players from the same team(Polamalu & Faneca)? Has that ever happened?

  • Add Shell and Cowher to that! I think it is Hutchinson this year.

Has happened fairly recently with modern candidates..But not as often with long term teammates...

Eagles-2004-2005.Brain Dawkins and T.O. both Class of 2018
49ers-1994.Deion Sanders and Richard Dent both Class of 2011
49ers-1994-1995..Jerry Rice and Rickey Jackson both class of 2010
Redskins-1983-1993..Art Monk and Darrell Green both class of 2008 (as mentioned above)

Its why I don't think Faneca will go in this year...I have them ranked like this:
    Troy Polamalu
    Edgerrin James
    Steve Hutchinson
    Tony Boselli
    Steve Atwater

I think the top 3 are very likely...Boselli has made the cut to 10 three years in a row as well...That 5th spot a bit more up in the air

As I posted with my odds earlier...87% of the Modern era inductees the past 15 years were either first ballot, or were top 10 the previous year...With only one likely 1st ballot guy this time, we should get three of last years 5...The only one not included in my guesses above was Faneca.

Reggie Wayne a 1st ballot guy, I cant see him jumping Isaac Bruce, but stranger things have happened for sure...

Of the 70 HOFers the past 15 Classes only 5 made the jump from 15 to 5 (This is what Lynch, Seymour and Bruce would have to do)...And its possible one of these could bump Atwater and/or Boselli...

Of the same 70, only ONE has jumped from the 25 semis to the top 5 the following year, and that was Roger Wehrli in 2007(Holt, Butler, Thomas and Mills would have to do that this class)...This is why I feel these guys have the lowest odds.

Lastly, we've had 3 of 70 that were not make the cut to 25 the previous season be inducted. Ralph Wilson, Rickey Jackson, Ed Sabol...And only one of those was a player...This is what Bryant Young would have to do this class. If the 49ers make it to the Super Bowl, this will increase his chances slightly, but either way a longshot.

We've had 2 at position groups, but getting 3 would be tough...These players tend to split votes from 15 to 10 and 10 to 5...I would be very surprised considering it would likely mean we 4 offensive players and just Polamalu on defense..Especially when we also are looking at a logjam at the S position and possibility of creating another at WR if they were to put 3 OL in and leave Bruce out again...Id say odds are extremely low of three OL in same class...

Be a much better fit to have the Class of 2021 looking like this:
    Peyton Manning
    Charles Woodson
    Alan Faneca
    Isaac Bruce
    Richard Seymour or Kevin Williams

Let the discussion begin, does Eli Manning belong in the HOF?

  • jay0791jay0791 Posts: 3,539 ✭✭✭✭

An average QB who never was even in the top 5 amongst his playing peers.
He played just good enough not to ruin 2 SB.
Played his last 5 years wondering if he was going to put out to pasture.
No doubt he has had some good games.

I'll puke if he gets in and I live in Giants country.

Does Keuchley have enough to get in????
Now he dominated/played at very high level in a Watt era.

  • He has 2 SB MVP's and his last name is Manning - 50/50 chance. Worthy - not!

  • And then you have Antonio Brown - from sure bet to waste of air!

  • Doc1962Doc1962 Posts: 203 ✭✭

I agree, I don’t think Manning deserves to be in however he is a “Manning” and I’m sure voters will be swayed by that. If so, then what’s next, a push for Archie to get in? LOL

As for Keuchley, he was a great player, I just wish he would have played a few more years. And Antonio Brown, it’s a simply a tragic train wreck, what a tremendous waste of incredible talent. He’ll probably end up in jail. So sad.

  • shagrotn77shagrotn77 Posts: 5,608 ✭✭✭✭

I think Eli and Kuechly will both end up in Canton. One or both may have to wait past the first ballot, but they'll get in eventually. As for Antonio Brown, ughhh. The dude used to be my favorite ATHLETE, not just football player. I actually liked him because he was an elite WR and NOT a diva. It's so hard to imagine now that I ever thought of him that way. He's probably always been a bit of an a hole behind the scenes, but you have to wonder if his behavior over the last few years has to do with CTE. Some people have said that he's never been the same since Burfict laid him out. I originally dismissed that idea, but now I'm not so sure.

I really do not follow internet news.....but

A Brown was recently served/issued a warrant for his arrest. Agree what a talent

A M you are a Penguins fan. Remember Kevin Stevens was scorching the NHL.
Then was dumped on his head....was never ever the same after that.

I should mention I do think Eli is a class act. I just think 2 games makes a HOFer.

With Roger Maris 2 years doesn't do it.

I'd put Eli around 70% HOF odds...Keuckly closer to 80%...118 games played WELL above the threshold for induction...Antonio Gates probably the best odds of these guys who will all be eligible in 2025

When does the next cutdown list happen for the modern candidates?

  • The 15 Modern-Era Player Finalists will be considered for election to the Hall of Fame when the Hall’s Selection Committee meets on “Selection Saturday” in Miami the day before Super Bowl LIV. The full committee will elect five Modern-Era Players who must receive a minimum positive vote of 80 percent from the committee.

Likely no announcement until after the Honors show.

    Joe
I know the Giants are your team. I live near Albany NY where the Giants trained at the University of Albany for years.
Most around here feel he is a HOFer. All I ever hear is he won 2 SB's. Not what a great QB he was. As stated by someone else opposing coaches didn't have to put a game plan together for Eli. Brady, Peyton, Brees, Rodgers and Favre all could take over an power at team. Eli was good enough to play for 16 years in a passing offense of a no-touche QB time and get yardage. What individual awards did he win other than SB MVP where the winning QB is guaranteed to win the award 90% of the time Do we now consider Mathew Stafford?

Although I rate big ben higher that Rivers they both are numbers accumulators. I don't put them either. Same reasons. Eli has always been a class act. Other than the "game used" scandal I never heard a bad word about him. For sure all 3 mentioned are in the hall of pretty dam good. If they did get in that wouldn't make me cry. Having to buy Eli's card would.

My guess is "vetteboy" won the Hill. He is rabid about the set. I think its a pop 1.

In regards to Eli, I don't disagree with anything you said about him. Sure, nobody had to game plan for him like the other 5 QBs you mentioned. I think the numbers these guys put up overshadow the accomplishments of Eli, Ben, and Rivers, but they put up big numbers themselves. Eli missed zero games due to injury, a streak that lasted 210 games. How many QBs last 16 seasons? Don't overlook the number of 4th quarter comebacks on his resume either, though I'm sure his "in game streakiness" put him in a position where he had to do that (just like we say Dan Reeves'coaching is the reason why Elway has so many 4th quarter comebacks). His opponents and opposing coaches opinions count more than us fans about his HOF worthiness. Also, his 2 SB victories and 2 MVPs were against a football dynasty. Plus he played on some crap teams coached by an overrated coach. He's not a first ballot guy, but I think he eventually gets in.
