I have been wondering that myself.

There have been so few cards of him graded.

In this year I would expect it is Topps chrome.

I generally wait until there is a reason and a specific card o get before I buy one.

Wagner is again quietly doing it and building a HOF career.

Funny, I guess we all had the same thought about Bobby Wagner after he got another AP nod this season. Maybe we should run an poll here? I don't know the modern market very well, so I wouldn't even know the options. Anyone want to spearhead this? I think it would have to be in its own thread if we do an actual poll as opposed to an informal one where we tally the votes.

"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."
  • It will be coming up soon as he will be on the all decade team and it will be decided for us.

  • Lots of choices:

    2012 Bowman Sterling #31 Bobby Wagner RC PSA 9 – $5.5
2012 Fleer Retro Ultra - 1963 Fleer #63BW Bobby Wagner
    2012 Leaf Certified #255 Bobby Wagner RC/999 - Raw $3
2012 Panini Crown Royale - Bronze #157 Bobby Wagner
    2012 Panini Elite #137 Bobby Wagner RC, SN999 Raw - $1/$7.5/$2.99 BGS9.5 - $20
2012 Panini Gridiron #207 Bobby Wagner RC
2012 Panini Prestige #222 Bobby Wagner RC Raw - $0.89
2012 Panini Prizm #239 Bobby Wagner RC
2012 Panini Rookies & Stars #156 Bobby Wagner RC Raw $1.39
2012 Score #307 Bobby Wagner RC Raw $0.99
    2012 SP Authentic #14 Bobby Wagner PSA 10 -$11 Raw -$0.24/$0.99
2012 Topps Magic #262 Bobby Wagner SP Raw – $2.99
2012 Topps Turkey Red #56 Bobby Wagner
    2012 Upper Deck #101 Bobby Wagner Raw - $1.75

Seems like most activity on the ELite card. (0% of what is selling is autograph or low numbered. His Chrome card is a blue wave SSP. To me it probably should be either the Sterling, Elite or SP Authentic.

  • Well after 2000, The SP Authentic RC's got numbered below 999 or had autos in most cases for the star rookies. So we switched to Topps Chrome for 2001 (numbered - Brees/Tomlinson). Then we got to Antonio Brown in 2011 and he only had two real RC's to chose from Donruss Elite /999 and Bowman Sterling. Personally I like the sterling, but the Elite was chosen. Now Topps & Upper Deck are gone and Panini Prizm is the choice.

  • Stephon Gilmore is the same year - DO we choose SP, chrome, Elite or sterling for him?

  • Panini Prizm has been the de facto choice for more recent players in the yearly award sets, e.g. Mayfield and Jackson in the Heisman set, Mahomes in the MVP set, Elliott in the ROY set, etc. Prizm seems to have gotten the majority of the market that Topps Chrome left, so in the absence of a Topps Chrome base RC for Wagner, my vote would go to Prizm. Beckett has refused to give the official RC designation to SP Authentic base cards since Upper Deck lost their NFL license in 2010 or 2011, so I don't believe PSA would allow the SP Authentic to be chosen.

  • shawthershawther Posts: 284 ✭✭✭

I think I would go with the Panini Prizm or Crown Royale as I know they have both been used in the past.

    Gilmore has a topps chrome.
An SP PSA 10 o f wagner only went for $11 the other night

Gentlemen, I’m seeking a bit of advice please if you can help. I’ve never sent it any of my HOF cards for review to get the 1/2 grade bump. If you were to rank the 3 or 4 most important criteria to earn that bump, what would it be? I’m sure I’ve got some cards that would qualify but I’m not sure which to choose?

I would appreciate any help you can offer. Thx!

  • I did it once with 15 cards - I got two bumps for 1/2 point. The cards came back with an arrow to a corner or centering on stickers for the others. Was probably 50/50 centering and corners.

I'll add that, while I haven't sent many cards in for review, I've had a decent amount on success on those that were graded before the half grades were instituted.

Thanks guy, most of my cards were graded long ago. I know I’ve got some very early Graded versions.

Ive gotten a descent share of bumps back when the initially started it...Both half and full grade (9 to 10)...As it was said above, centering..Measure it, I used to use a digital caliper to calculate the exact centering %..Example 57/43 to see how well it would fit within the grade standards. Once you've confirmed that, check corners and surfaces under 10x magnification...Lastly, similar to sending in raw cards for grading, hope your grader is having a good day...LOL

I had a few cards that I sent in for review multiple times...They always pointed out the "flaw" with small stickers with arrows drawn or would write exactly why the card was not bump worthy. They didnt always point out the same thing on the same card, and I had at least one in particular that didnt get the bump until the 3rd time I sent it in for the review...At the time it made it the highest graded of its kind and I was very confident back then in my personal grading eye...

Another good trick, particularly with newer (1980s/1990s) cards...Was to send in multiple cards of the same grade/player..For example...Send in six different PSA 9 1984 John Elway cards...Or varying degrees of eye appeal...A couple of ugly PSA 9s followed by a gorgeous 50/50 centered 9 would vastly increase the odds of getting a 10 bump...Then re-sell the other PSA 9's since they just leave them as is in the PSA 9 holders...

I havent sent in a card to PSA in 6-7 years, so I don't know if their process has changed or how things are going in the grading room these days,..But this was my experience

That’s some great information, thank you very much. I usually don’t send in more than 5-10 raw cards a year only because I want to use my free certs up and I rarely send in already graded cards. Not long ago I did send in an SGC 8 Tommy Nobis 67 Philly and to my surprise it came back an 8.

One other question, I’ve got several PSA cards that may even be 1st generation graded, the ones that have the old dot matrix printed label, they’re old. I’ve heard that when PSA first started the graders were VERY conservative and didn’t want to give out a lot of high grades right out of the gate. As a result, you’d think the first graded cards would be ripe for a bump?

Have you ever heard that comment before?

I would say they were less consistent in both directions. I would post a few quality scans in the TC&M forum to get some opinions on likelihood of bumps for those cards you're questioning.

  • jay0791jay0791 Posts: 3,539 ✭✭✭✭

Wow JP that is some great bumps on very significant cards. !!!!!

I have never reviewed cards for a bump. Only crack outs. I think I have won as many as lost (down a grade).
Generally if a _centered _SGC card is sent to PSA you will get a similar grade. I have heard from many knowledgeable sources centering is the key. This is assuming everything else is equal.

I have cards going back years and IMO card graded today are stricter grades than years ago. Maybe one full grade.
I don't think it was because PSA didn't want to give out good grades. The whole industry has evolved. Everyone is far more experienced. I bet a grader isn't the same after 10.000 cards have gone by him. I have cards that I bought years ago that today would not meet my standards.

Go and post some cards here. This is a very good place to get opinions.

Thanks guys, I appreciate all the good information. Unfortunately I’ve never scanned any of my cards, hence the reason I’ve never been able to post my cards in the HOF Set. It’s been one of those “projects” that I’ve just never been able to get to. I may try to pull a few out.

Strong 7 in my opinion, what was it originally?

  • shawthershawther Posts: 284 ✭✭✭

It came back a 4. I couldn’t figure out how. There isn’t any creases. There are print marks on the card but still shouldn’t have dropped it that much. print marks are pretty common on the ‘61 Fleer. I was thinking a 7 as well but could see a 6.

  • shawthershawther Posts: 284 ✭✭✭

These all came from the same bulk submission as the Baughan card. Curious what everyone thinks. These are others that I am contemplating sending in for a regrade.

  • shawthershawther Posts: 284 ✭✭✭

    Ken Strong PSA 2
    Butler and lane PSA 5
    Dave Jone PSA 5
    Jim Parker PSA 4

I need opinion on some cross grades that I’ll post later. Thanks for your help everyone.

  • Did you get a stain qualifier for the Butler and off center for the Jones?

  • DEFPOTECDEFPOTEC Posts: 100 ✭✭✭

Nice looking Baughan. I wonder if the grade reflects a miscut. The top-right and bottom-right corners don’t look exactly 90 degrees...although maybe it’s just the scan. I swear nearly every ‘61 Fleer I see was cut poorly...edges aren’t straight, corners are fractionally off from 90 degrees. Did you select no qualifier? That could potentially explain it.

(Disclosure: I’ve never graded a card! Haha. Prefer raw ones and crack out anything graded I buy (rare) for display. So I’m hardly a PSA expert.)

  • DEFPOTECDEFPOTEC Posts: 100 ✭✭✭

Jimmy Johnson joins Cowher in the centennial class. Surprised?

  • shawthershawther Posts: 284 ✭✭✭

I did not get the stain qualifier or OC. I think I understand the grade on the Butler. I’ll have to check again but I believe the centering is within the 70/30 guidelines for it to be a 7. I am surprised with both coaches that were elected, although, I do believe they are both deserving.

  • The two coaches picked are two most recent and are still on TV every weekend. Not saying they are not worthy, but thought we were working to get rid of some of the backlog and get the older coaches in the hall where they belong. Those would have been the last two off the list that met that decree. I guess we can count on the 10 most recent seniors - doubt they will even go back into the 50's let alone the 30's.

  • Did you pick the button for no qualifiers? Butler looks like 7st and Joes 7oc to me.

Not ever once did I ever think of Jimmy Johnson as a HOF coach.
    Nothing more than average

    I agree with Bill above.

  • They will probably make this even worse and elect Modell to the hall. Wonder where they will rebuild it after it gets burned down? Cleveland will never forget that idiots later years.

  • IMO No way is Cowher HOF - I actually do think Jimmy Johnson belongs for completely rebuilding a disaster and probably being one of the best talent evaluators ever. His eye for talent was amazing.

I guess I'm in the minority because I don't quite get the uproar over Cowher and Jimmy Johnson getting into the HOF. Cowher was 149-90-1 with a Super Bowl title and JJ won back-to-back Super Bowls. You could make a case for Flores over one of these guys. but his last 4 years were pretty bad. Coryell was kinda like Schottenheimer. Great in the regular season - not so much in the playoffs.

  • I guess my feeling was that neither should have went in this year - I thought they were celebrating the past this year, not last week. I have no problem with either of them in the HOF. Other than Belichick, there aren't any great coaches out there coming any time soon and the two they picked would have been perfect for the one Coach/Contributor every year. I can't think of anyone else other than Andy Reed (who needs some super bowl wins), you are down to Mike Tomlin.

Tom Coughlin eligible Class of 2021...Although agreed with above, assumed Coryell would be in before all of them...While he wasnt good in the playoffs, he changed the game wich to me is bigger than wins/losses...

"He was the architect behind the one-back formation, developed the "joker" tight end, pioneered the use of option routes, devised the flood route combination, conceived the numbered route tree/play-call lexicon, and was integral in the advancement of the use of pre-snap motion and running back screens."

I don’t think of Roger Craig as a HOFer. He had 2 huge years and a couple good ones and that’s pretty much it. Shaun Alexander, IMO, would be more deserving, as well as some other RBs. I don’t put much stock in the “he changed the game” thing, which I think is an overused notion to begin with. Plus, Lenny Moore did it way earlier anyway. But, I guess if Floyd Little’s in...

    Okay, rant over 😀.
