  • Don...great cards! The Shantz and Richardson are tough in an 8, I can't imagine owning them in a 9!! I'm green with envy, being a vintage Yankee collector and all.image

  • FYI,

I sold a 1960 curt simmons in psa 8 grade off ebay for $900.00 in March of this year, this example was very high end and I actually thought that it had a shot of getting a 9!

The other toughest card (IMO) is the Murtaugh manager card and I sold the PSA 8 example to a diferent buyer for $550.00 off ebay.

OK Guys, I'm on board. Currently in 79th place image

As with all my "older" sets, just looking for modest mid-grade cards at prices too good to pass up.

I'm looking forward to learning the ropes of the 1960 set from all of you.

    Peace,

    Tom (detroitfan2)
  • Chris, looks like you're well on you're way to an awesome set. I've completed the set twice with my most recent residing at #4 on the All Time Finest [Retired} i sold it a month ago. my first set i sold off card by card it was also at # 4 ATF when i started breaking it although it was an 8.05 GPA, a few people have passed that since then. good luck on you're pursuit it's an awesome set when complete, the only card i have never owned in an 8 or better is the # 451 Curt Simmons although the pop has jumped from 3 to 13 in the last 1-1/2 years and appently to 14 with David's sub. Do ay 1960 collectors have any very low grade raw cards they are looking to part with ? I am talking vg condition at best. Creases are ok, even some writing on them are ok. Just no complete and total dogs. I have a friend who has a limited budget and collects for the joy. He wants raw only, and doesnt mind very low grade. I have over 1000 1960 topps laying around but all are at least ex, which are out of his budget. To give an idea he would want to pay around $1 a card for the low numbers and maybe $2 or $2.50 a card at the most for high numbers.

Any help would be appreciated !

  • Hi all,

Post #1 -- I've been in voyeur mode for the past few weeks. I just started collecting again after a 15 year layoff (I was 14 yrs old when I stopped). As a kid, I loved vintage and particularly loved the '60 set. It looked cool and seemed moderately obtainable so it became my focus.

My goal is to finish what I started when I was 14 and assemble a PSA 7/8 set (mostly 8 hopefully). I've got about 40% of the set in "gradeable" condition (with a handful already slabbed and an initial batch off to PSA).

Anyhow, I'm just peeking my head out and saying hello. I will be filling out the PSA Registry at some point --- I still can't believe how much collecting has changed since I last participated.

Can anyone tell me what card from the 60s set has a picture of a catcher in a catcher's pose with the face mask on?? I have seen that card before, but do not remember who it is??

Thanks Phil, I'm really enjoying building this set, and welcome to the new guys.image Hi Stingray, Here's one that I have. There could be others, but I'm only at 13% complete, so I'm not sure.image

  • I'm looking to purchase a '60 Mantle (#350) in PSA 8. What kind of price could I expect to pay? I've checked ebay but there's only been 1-2 recent auctions. Does anyone have any deeper historical data? what has the trend shown for, say, the past 12 months.

Also, any thought on future outlook of that card? I know there is still a fair bit of raw product out there for 1960 Topps and am wondering if in 2-3 years the price of Mantle #350 in PSA 8 might actually be less than it is today.

    Thoughts????

High grade Mantles from all sets tend to consistently appreciate. I would be surpised if the 60 will ever get an cheaper. If you can find a nice well centered 8 for less than 10% over SMR, you are doing very well.

I have the opportunity to purchase the scanned card for right around $1235, shipped with insurance. Do I take this deal? His quoted price to me is at 12% over SMR. I'm thinking of countering at $1210 (10% SMR).

I live in LA and am going to National in a few weeks ... would I be better off looking for one there, perhaps in raw form? I definitely want an 8+ for the set I'm putting together.

  • Do any of you know who "oleabner" is on ebay?

I've noticed he and I bidding on a lot of the '60 Topps PSA cards. I imagine he's also attemping to the complete the set. I'd like to get in touch with him to potentially trade. I have a few PSA dups, as well as some decent raw dups. He's buying 6s, 7s, and 8s whereas I'm pretty much only buying 8s --- so I may have some add'l 6s, 7s to trade him as I upgrade.

If any of you know of him, please PM me.

    Thx!

Wow, THANKS! That is some great information.

I did end up buying the Mantle --- I simply couldn't resist due to the overall centering and beauty of the card. Got it for $1210 and I am very pleased. Your data seems to support that number. I imagine most of those you list had at least some centering issue as I've noticed most on eBay have.

Here's the card I purchased. Thanks again for providing that data.

I thought I would show off my '60s that I just sent in....

The shop owner of the shop I frequent gave them to me, knowing I'm a Yankee fan.

I'm keeping the two 7s, because they show Yankee Stadium in the background. The two 8s are (shamelessly) on eBay right now.

I love these cards! I may have to get a few more!

    Hi 1960 collectors.

I have a small stack of psa 7s with no qualifers.

    135, 143, 172, 189, 359, and 473

$50 for the lot delivered or $9 each delivered if you need singles. I would also trade for a psa 7 star from the 60s that is around $50 value.

    PM me.

Just won this beauty off the 'bay from Bkritz, thanks Brian! For those of you that didn't see this card on the "Mail Call" thread over on the community board...Nothing like sweet, centered 7s (if you can't afford the 8):

I have bought raw cards from that seller before. The day they came in the mail I immediately put him (her?) on my Favorite Sellers list.

I also bought over $150 of product from him tonight. I bought much lower grade stuff than you did, though...I'm just doing a raw set.

I'm sure you'll be pleased with the cards you won!

  • Hey Nick,

I have a fair bit of VG-EX, EX+, NM '60 Topps that aren''t good enough for PSA 8 --- probably close to 250 cards total.

I originally began building this set when I was 12 back in 1988 or so --- I'd buy from Kit Young and EX+ was the price range I could afford.

In any case, if you're interested let me know .... I'd be happy to hook you up with a pretty attractive deal.

    Thanks,

My latest addition. Perhaps not as nice as the PSA 7 Clemente I recently posted in this thread, but I've been wanting a nice Aaron in 7 for a while and this one will do.

I have a nice 60 raw set that probably would be worth grading. It appears that many of the cards in the second series had black smuge stains on the surface especially the Sporting News Rookies. How does PSA generally treat those cards?

  • Fiveniner,

I've got some 8's that have the smudges ... it's very common with the Rookie Stars. I don't think you'll see any 9's with them though.

Interestingly, the cards he graded the highest (NM/MT) returned the 6's & 7's

Also, still have 5 of his cards to submit later, plus another 3 that were too poor to submit at all.

    It's doubtful I get my 6 eight's out of my 19 card purchase --- though I need to examine the 8 OC's.

Getting the WS Summary card in PSA 8 is huge though --- that's a tough one to find cheap!
