The official 1960 Topps set thread, show 'em off or just chime in

Who's got some great cards to show off from this set? It's always been my favorite Topps issue with the bright colors and horizontal card format, and I've recently decided to make a run at a complete PSA 7/8 set. Any other '60 set owners around these parts? Show off some of your best cards here, or just comment if you'd like.image

Definetly a great set in my book. This may be the least challanging of of the early 60s set with maybe the 64 as an exception as far as price is concerned.Great choice though.

Only a few cards that create a challenge in high grade, but most are real easy to find and everybody is trying to sell. Glad I got out when I did a year ago. The Duren card was the tough card along with the Kubek for me although most people talk about Simmons and Murtaugh! You should have NO trouble putting this set together, not sure it's worth the effort though. Thats my 2 cents and I've been there!image

Here is one I just picked up.

I'm not doing the set, but I agree, it is a cool design. I'm collecting Yankees that have had their number retired.

Here is another one that I bought at a card show when I was collecting as a kid. I sent it in for grading last year.

    What???

"Only a few cards create a challenge in high grade and most are real easy to find and everybody's trying to sell"

"Least challenging of early 60s sets with maybe 64 as an exception"

    This is a great set.

As far as everyone wanting to sell, look at the top 10 on the registry for current and all-time finest--no difference--this is not common. no high-grade set holders have sold.

Brian and I certainly had a lot of trouble hunting down a fair number of cards in psa 8.

As far as the least challenging comment, I would consider 1960 Topps in psa 8 or better to be more challenging than any other 60s set with the exception of 1962 and possibly 1961(although thats debatable).

Don - those are some GREAT looking 8s and 9s.

I took a double take at 1960toppsguys comments as well - although all are entitled their opinion, it's mine that 8s in 1960 are much harder to get than 8s in '61. They "book" at the lowest price of the 60-63 sets, but I think the SMR is just completely off on that issue.

I collect Topps HOFers from 1955-1975. The 1956 and 1960 sets are my favorites (guess I'm just a sucker for the horizontal format...) Here's a few of mine that I've slabbed, none as pretty as Mariner's, but I'll keep them just the same. (Great thread, by the way...)

Sensational - nothing like a well centered '60 Topps.
BTW, that's the first baseball set I collected as a kid, ripping wax packs in the summer of 1960.

  • 1960 is a great set, as far as being an easy set i've always heard just the opposite. it's definitely a lot easier if you go with a psa 7/8 mix. I've built the set twice now complete with my current set at # 6 on the current finest. the only card i've never owned from 1960 in a Psa 8 is the # 451 Curt Simmons which is far and away the toughest card in the set. there are several more tough cards in Psa 8 but they're usually readily avaialble in 7's. I'm thinking thats what 60toppsguy was meaning in the above post. I do have some of my Psa 9 cards scanned and posted in my set. Phil

Great cards everyone! Those commons in 9 are just awesome looking. I'm trying really hard to stick with 8's and a few 7's until I get a significant percentage of the set, but those nines sure would be cool to have. I may have to cheat and grab a couple of those early on.image Keep em coming.image

  • I would love to send you guys some scans of my set the Koufax 10 etc. but my great liberty safe locked me out soI can't even add a stack of cards I have to the set. I wanted to be at 8.75 at this years close but it looks like its not going to happen.I will be at hollywood park with a load of 8's and some 9's if anyone needs some I also have a few 7's. Good luck,Tony

Tony, there is no question that you have the best 1960 set in the world. I can't imagine what it looks like but I know that it is impressive.

I thought that I would post a few more scans for whomever would like to see more nice 1960 cards.

Very nice! I need to upgrade my 7
  • Finally. I forgot my password and it took me two weeks to get it from PSA. I guess security is tight.

Anyway, I just want to chime in as a fellow 1960 set collector. I have been collecting this set for about two years now. It is my favorite (and only) set. I had always been a player and team collector in the past, but I was investing too much capital. I decided to collect my favorite year and just buy some cheap cards to satisfy my addiction. Well so much for that plan. It seems every card I need now is over $50.00.

I would really like to hear any stories or little known facts about this set. 1960 was the first year I was introduced to the world of card collecting and no other set has the same place in my heart.

Also, anybody have any luck with opening packs? I once opened a 36 card rack pack (3 cellos). I actually only opened two of the packs and submitted them. The cards came back about half 7s and half 8s with a couple of 6s in there. I decided to sell the last pack intact. It receieved a grade of 9 from GAI, and I recouped all my cost for the original rack pack. The happy ending is that I received a grade of 8 on #160 (Rival All-Stars).

I am so neurotic about this set I have even set up a database in MS Access to track every eBay price for PSA 7s, 8s, 9s, and 10s. I try to not over-pay for a card, but sometimes up pops the devil and I lose conciousness. I have also input all the color combinations of the cards just to see which combinations were most rare.

I am also interested is picking up cards to fill my set. I am currently #23 on the registry (Bill's 1960s). Many of the cards I am missing are Star cards, but I am not interested in most of them right now. I am concentrating on the harder to find cards presently. Also, I am composing this from work and will not be able to respond to any PMs or emails until tonight, but please feel free to contact me.

If I can help anyone with their collection I am willing to do that too. I am no help to those above me, but I do have some 7s that I upgraded that may be of help to others. I wish everyone the best in their quest, especially Tony. His set is awesome and we have helped each other out, although he did more helping than I.

I am glad to see this thread pop up, and I hope there is enough interest to keep it going.

    Thanks,
    Bill

Hi Bill, and welcome.Thats a very nice set you have there. I'm number 57 at the moment, but hope to rise a few notches in the next few days with a couple of deals I have going. Anyway, here's my new Clemente to keep the thread going. It's not as well centered top to bottom as alot of the 8's I have so far, but still a great looking card with sharp corners.image

BTW, a pop 13/0 Curt Simmons in PSA 8 just sold on the Bay for $555. The SMR priceguide seems to be a little bit off on this one.image Congrats to the new owner.
  • The Curt Simmons is getting better on eBay except for one lucky guy back in December. Here is what I have tracked on that card:

    Number Date Amount
    451 06/11/2006 $555.00
    451 04/08/2006 $611.00
    451 12/16/2005 $340.00
    451 08/11/2005 $625.55
    451 05/08/2005 $709.59
    451 04/11/2005 $916.00
    451 03/16/2005 $1,075.00
  • bennybravobennybravo Posts: 1,923 ✭✭✭
Very interesting data. It does seem to be declining in price overall. I thought $555 was a bit nuts! I hope the sale prices will keep on dropping, and that that a few more appear over the next year. I did pick up a nice #52 Dave Philly in 8 tonight which is a pretty tough card as well.image

Very nice submission. There are some tough to find 8s in that group. I viewed your web site and you have quite a few nice 60s. Are you going to be at the National?
  • Thanks for the compliment. I almost have all of the tough cards to complete this set in PSA 8 NQ. This was a solid submission.

In spite of my large Naxcom inventory (I actually have close to 5,000 more PSA graded cards that I have not yet had time to list (including some tough 60s)), I only buy and sell cards part time so I probably won't be at the National. I would love to go one year to meet in person many of the great people in the hobby I have met over the Internet over the years.
