<< <i>Have you guys seen this eBay sellers autos "schoonoverphillip"?

Just listed a ton of hard to find football HOF autos? Think they are legit? >>

I'd be shocked if any are real - especially the Thorpe. It looks like the guy was trying to make his own "cut" cards.

I finally got my card together for the submission. I have way too many to submit at once. It was like Sophie's Choice - determining which ones stay and which ones go.....

    Greg,

The list of players for the March show is up. You can link to it from PSA. Mainly Cowboys from the 90's super bowl teams. Aikman, Irvin, Deoin and Emmitt included. Moon and Wright will be there as well. Also some bears if you care for them. For the prices its probably easier to but the auto cards off ebay. But I have an uncut sheet of AP 1994 QB club cards that I want autoed. I have the Favre already.

I actually placed a bid on the Jim Finks auto from the seller. I'll take a chance if it goes for under $35 to $40. The "cut" auto's seem very strange.

  • The listings do seem strange but it would be weird for someone that's been on eBay for 6+ years, with 600+ positive feedback, to start selling fake autographs??? I guess those are the '91 Enor cards that have been used, huh?

By the way, I put the package with my cards for the submission in the mail today at lunch. Sent via Priority Mail from Baltimore so you certainly should get it by Monday. I sent 15 for the $15 PSA/DNA submission and 13 for the $5 special. Thanks for putting that together. Let me know how much I owe for shipping once you get it sorted out and I can send you money through Paypal.

    All,

I've done quite a bit of research and think the following HOF members are impossible to obtain autographed cards of. For these players, I'm going to request that they are taken out of the HOF auto set - since no known auto cards are known to exist. Please let me know if you agree or disagree:

    Bert Bell
    Charles Bidwell
    Joe Carr
    Guy Chamberlin
    Paddy Driscoll
    Wilbur Pete Henry
    Bill Hewitt
    Walt Kiesling
    Curly Lambeau
    Tim Mara
    George Preston Marshall
    Hugh "Shorty" Ray
    Dan Reeves

As far as I know, no cards were ever issued of them while they were alive and no legendary cuts have been made of them. There are a few other players for whom SMR lists as having autograhed cards but I can't locate them anywhere. These players are Fritz Pollard, Joe Guyon, Jimmy Conzelman, George Trafton and Earle Neale. For now I'll leave them in the set unless someone tells me otherwise.

    All opinions are welcome!!

    Regards,

    Greg M.

  • Wouldn't it still be possible that there could be some cut cards made of these guys in the future? If so, should we remove them completely?

<< <i>Dan Reeves has a 1999 upper deck century legends epic card >>

Different Dan Reeves. The coach Dan Reeves isn't in the HOF. The Dan Reeves in the hall of fame was the owner of the Rams during their glory years. His bio is below:

    DAN REEVES
    Class of 1967
    Owner-Administrator
    (Georgetown)

    1941-1971 Cleveland/Los Angeles Rams

Daniel Farrell Reeves. . .One of game's greatest innovators. . .Opened up West Coast to major sports by moving Rams to Los Angeles, 1946. . . Experiments in game TV paved way for modern NFL policies. . .First post-war NFL owner to sign an African-American (Kenny Washington), 1946. . . First to employ full-time scouting staff. . . Founded famous kids attendance program at Rams games. . .Born June 30, 1912, in New York City. . . Died April 15, 1971, at age of 58.

    Wulf,

I've been going back and forth on that myself. My thought is that we can always add them if a cut card is released in the future. For now, it skews everyone's percentage completion if the cards are included in the set composition. Just my opinion.

You will be lucky and broke if you get to 90% complete.
Why omit 13 members? They are in the hall and cards are still being made.

    Ullr,

As I said before, if there are no known cards of these people, why leave them in? It's not a big deal either way, but with the lack of cut cards in football compared to baseball, it's questionable whether one will ever be made of the 13 players I had listed. The lack of football cards prior to 1948 (except for several oddball and the famous National Chicle set) severaly limits the number of cards that would have been available when these HOFers were alive.

Nice Neale by the way. I proposed to leave him in - because SMR does listed a price for an autographed card of him. I was saying that I've never seen one of him (or Fritz Pollard, Joe Guyon, Jimmy Conzelman and George Trafton). From what I understand, Guyon, Conzelman and Trafton died before the 1974 and 1975 Fleer Hall of Fame cards were issued) and I have never seen a card of Fritz Pollard that was issued prior to his death in 1986. As I said before, I'm not aware of any but one may exist.

  • I would suggest to leave the set as is. If PSA can do it, designate those players without a card currently with an asterisk. They will show up in the set, but not currently count towards set weighting. n his way we can stay on top of which players are in the HOF, and also use it as a tool to petition the card makers to make cut sig. cards of thes HOF members.

  • I assume you are referring to ones noted as "Authentic" I have been told by PSA that these will be re-slabbed with a grade for $10. I have a few like this but have not sent them in yet. There isn't a spot on the form for this serevice so I assume you'd just note "Other" and attach a note with what you want?

    wuf,

I dont know if you live near chicago. But PSA will be here later this month for the Sun Times show. If you want you could send them to me and I will take them with mine and hand them in at the show. That way everything should be taken care of correctly.

I'm in the Baltimore area. I may consider doing that as I have a few with the dreaded "3" default grade for an "Authentic" label. I'll shoot you a PM if I decide to do it. Thanks alot for the offer-
  • gregm13gregm13 Posts: 5,798 ✭✭✭
I also have several PSA/DNA slabbed cards labeled as authentic that I'm going to have graded and re-slabbed. I called PSA and they said that I could submit these cards under any regular special - and they will grade them and re-slab w/ the PSA/DNA certification.

    Hope that helps.

    Jery,

I've thought of this but would PSA grade these? I thought that PSA will only grade cards that are officially licensed. PSA would authenticate the autograph no doubt - but my concern is whether they would actually grade the card. I just sent an e-mail to PSA to ask whether they would grade a cut signature card that has been personally created. I'll post the response.

I just hit 80.00% on the HOF auto set - I have quite a few in for grading and another 50+ waiting for the cash to replenish. I still need the following autographed cards:

    George Allen
    Bert Bell
    Elvin Bethea
    Charles Bidwell
    Nick Buoniconti
    Joe Carr
    Harry Carson
    Guy Chamberlin
    Jimmy Conzelman

    Curly Lambeau
    Jack Lambert
    Bobby Layne
    Marv Levy
    Link Lyman
    John Madden
    Tim Mara
    George Preston Marshall
    John "Blood" McNally
    Earle "Greasy" Neale
    Ernie Nevers
    Steve Owen
    Fritz Pollard
    Hugh "Shorty" Ray
    Dan Reeves
    Dan Rooney
    Pete Rozelle
    Bob St. Clair
    Hank Stram
    Lynn Swann
    Jim Thorpe
    George Trafton
    Emlen Tunnell
    Norm Van Brocklin
    Bill Walsh
    Bob Waterfield
    Rayfield Wright
    Dave Wilcox

Out of the players listed above, I believe there are between 13 and 15 that are impossible to obtain (players/coaches/owners had no cards issued while they were alive and no cut cards have been made of them).

I have TTM's out for Bethea, Buoniconti, Carson, Jimmy Johnson, Lambert, Levy and Wilcox. In addition, I have a tentitive deal to pick up McNally, Layne, Waterfield and Van Brocklin. That leaves me with the rest. I would appreciate any help - I'm looking for cards in NM or better condition with a nice signature and NO sticker auto's.

How is everyone else doing w/ their set?

    Jim,

I absolutely love the card you have for sale. I've been bidding on your card but the high bidder keeps taking me out. It's very nice, but I'm not willing to pay more than $300 to $350 for a Nevers. There are enough Nevers autographed cards out there that I can buy for that price.

good luck on the finks, waterfield, van brocklin, and tunnell....I tried to acquire some of those autos a couple years ago to complement my '51 set, and prices were out of this world. I think I've only seen 2 authenticated examples of van brocklin.

I'm actually kicking myself as there was an un-authenticated van brocklin card on ebay last month....it woud have been worth rolling the dice for the $50 sale price.

I know a guy who has the Waterfield, Van Brocklin, Layne and McNally autographed cards from the 1975 Fleer Hall of Fame set. I'm trying to convince him to break the set and sell me the cards image Ther is a Vinks on E-bay right now - but the card isn't in the greatest condition - plus the auto appears a little smudged. There was a nice Tunnell on E-bay recently but the card was miscut. I'm fanatical about condition, and none of the players above are impossible. Difficult yes, but not impossible.

Are/were you collecting the 1951 set autographed?

Thanks - but I'm not interested in 3x5's - only autographed cards. I usually don't buy signifiant cuts - only if the HOFer doesn't have any other cards that could have been autographed while he was alive (i.e. Vince Lombardi - which I recently purchased a cut card of). I like the Nevers you're selling because the auto is amazing - but his autograph isn't impossible to obtain and there were a few vintage cards I've seen of his that were autographed (1955 All American and 1974 Fleer come to mind). Good luck on the card - I bet the card will close over $500.

Greg, Congrats on 80%. Below are reportedly the TTM deal with some of the guys you need. My success so far has only been with Carson and he personalized both cards I sent. I do have a 87 Topps though not personalized that I got off ebay recently. It's the one I'll use for my set. Not sure why I got RTS from Nick, let me know if you have any luck with him.

Elvin Bethea (I've seen recent TTM success, I already have him on a 74 Topps, so I have not tried TTM)
Nick Buoniconti (recent failure with donation RTS)
Harry Carson (TTM will personalized card) I have had a recent success
Lou Creekmur (signs TTM charges $15 - I have not tried yet)
Sonny Jurgensen (signs TTm, I have one out currently)
Jack Lambert (Charges $25.00 TTM, I have not tried)
Bill Walsh (signs TTM, I have one sent out)

Good job, Greg. I saw you were bidding and just watched, my wife woulda killed me anyway.

Jordan is real tough, it's even harder to find a nice one. I have one in my 64 team signed yearbook, I like yours better!

I have TTM requests out for Bethea, Buoniconti, Carson, Creekmur, Jimmy Johnson, Lambert, and Wilcox. In addition, I have a possible deal for Landry, Levy, Tunnell and Al Davis. I'd really like to hit 85% by the time the awards roll around, but I don't know if I can afford to have more graded by then (I just dropped $1400 for grading last month).

Please let me know if there are any auto'd cards that you can help me with.

    Regards,

    Greg,

Good luck getting to 85% by the cut off date. Hope you can make it. Hope we get our grades back by then!! It seems that the large submission that is posted on the boards has slowed us down.

As a matter of fact, I picked up an auto'd Landry and Fears (I already had one raw but this was nicer) at the Sun Times show and had Rayfield Wright sign a 1975 Topps card - so I have two more off my list. I have a potential deal to buy Emlen Tunnell, Marv Levy, another Landry (very sweet) and Al Davis from a dealer. With those, I should be over 85%. The one problem now is that I'd have to come up with circa $1000 to have the remaining cards graded which isn't going to happen, considering I just dropped $1400 on our recent order.

By the way, I called PSA last Friday and the tall boy order (circa 25 cards) should be ready this week. The other two orders are still in grading. We should have those by next week - let's keep our fingers crossed!!

Did you find anything at the Sun Times show?

  • Greg,

Nice pick-ups. Thanks for the update on the orders. Let's hope we all get through without any "Unable to Authenticate"....

Unfortunately I wasnt able to make the show. I had a lot of projects around the house as my wifes cousin from Germany will be staying with us for three months. I wanted to go and get the Wright auto, was a reasonable price...compared to Aikman, Smith, Moon and Sanders. But I had already spent quite a bit lately on cards and need to take a break and save up some funds.

    Turk Edwards
    Len Ford
    Joe Guyon
    Wilbur Pete Henry

I was looking for a van buren autograph for my LSU set.....is it me or did psa/dna really screw the pooch on this card? I know sigs change, but this sig doesn't even look like like it's from the same hand...and usually players sigs get messier over time, not sharper.

To be honest, the Van Buren doesn't seem that far off besides the fact that the slabbed one appears to have been signed while he was walking or in a hurry. It seems a strange angle for someone to sign their name...
