I'm an athiest, but I don't have any problem with people celebrating Christmas. (Why should I, he was a good man and an excellent teacher.) Why, because I DON'T have to participate (and I don't). It is not manditory that I do so. That is the same reason why I was AGAINST Madaline O'Hair's suit when she tried to get the broadcasting of religious programing removed for the PUBLIC airwaves. It wasn't manditory. No one HAD to listen to the programs. That was what the off switch or channel selector was for. It is why I do celebrate her victory removing manditory prayer from the public schools, but support anyone who they try to punish for participating in personal, volentary prayer in schools. (Contrary to popular belief the court decision removing prayer in schools does NOT mean that a child can't pray in school, it means that he can't be forced to pray or to pray in a particular fashion. If they want to say a little prayer before they take a test, or say grace before eating and the school stops them, their rights have been violated and they have a case for a lawsuit against the school or school board.) I don't want to force others to live by my rules, but they have a lot of nerve forcing me to live by theirs. If I want to handle money in todays society I am forced, by law, to distribute coins and currency proclaiming my trust in a supreme being. I am forced to declare my faith in something in which I actually do not believe.

OK, since this is about the 50th time I've seen this kind of thread here I figured I'd just chime in a little from my perspective. I am an intelligent man and I am an evangelical Christian who generally follows the reformed tradition (Calvin, Luther, etc). I frankly DO NOT CARE about whether the motto is included on the coins and currency or not. I would rather people live out the motto than see it on a coin.
What I do care about is the waste of taxpayer money, time, and the never-ending set of emotional irrationalism in arguing over something that has no power to effect change in any person's heart or life. What this lawsuit is at its core is a pathetic attempt for recognition from the media and self validation from groups that agree with him. At least that is my understanding of this person's effort.
I think they would be better off sending the money they will use in this suit to help people rebuild their lives in the gulf coast than in this endeavor. If they don't want to help others in a meaningful and productive manner, then just keep the money and shut up.

The framers of the Constitution were, for the most part, religious men. However, they experienced first hand rule by the King and the Church of England and wisely realized that since their new government was powerful, it should be separated from the Church, as free men should be able to decide religious matters for themselves.
Since 80% of the people are basically stupid, "In God We Trust" could be viewed as a subliminal message for the masses being forced to conform to the Governments beliefs.
Personally, I rather see more suits regarding the separation of Church and State in the Tax Code instead of IGWT.
As far as the ACLU, they get a lot of bad press when they go off trying to defend some wack job who has killed a bunch of people, but they argue more cases before the US Supreme Court regarding our civil rights than any other organization and are instrumental in shaping the law of the land.

Establishing a religion is certainly not the same as seperation of the two..... this I would say basically refers to the King of England founding the Church of England.....

The ACLU is and has been instrumental in the ongoing destruction of the culture and society of the United States of America.
I personally interpret the word "God" on our money to mean "the nature of things" or "our sense of morality and right and wrong" or "our will and ability to achieve our destiny" and by those definitions I agree with the motto.
I do not interpret the word or concept "God" in that context to mean advocation or participation in any specific religious mythology or theistic belief system, and I do not expect any judicial authority to decide otherwise, now or ever. "God" refers to us people and our strength of character, not belief in any one specific supernatural entity or set of entities.
Edited to add: Whether or not the "IGWT" motto is on the money or not, will not change the belief systems of intelligent people. They will believe what they believe, whether or not some words appear on our coins and bills. Do we trust in God, whether or not the money says so? and if we remove the motto, do we no longer trust in God?

Atheists are perhaps the last social group that can be opening discriminated against and ridiculed. Even homosexuals have more rights than atheists. I mean, come on: "clowns", "shallow", "punk-ass"? What other group can such hatred be leveled and left unchallenged?
Let me put it another way. Fill in the blank:

No matter what you put in that blank, there will be a group of people who are not that who will complain about it. In Men We Trust? In Caucasians We Trust? In Straights We Trust? It's all ludicrous until you put God there, because no one cares about trampling over some "punk-ass" atheists' rights.

Amen to that.
First appeared in 1864 and has been on various coins and currency since.
IGWT became the national motto after Congress passed P.L.84-140 in the 1950's.
Some religious people feel strongly it should stay, other religious minded folk do not care for its "billboard" appearance on coins.
I think the motto is safe given the more serious issues at hand.

Establishing a religion is certainly not the same as seperation of the two..... this I would say basically refers to the King of England founding the Church of England.....
Prohibiting the free exercise is also not the same as seperation..... This just says they can't stop any religion of being a religion.....
<< <i>Just a FYI. Looks like the Supreme Court decided to stay out of the debate.
Supreme Court >>
Actually to me it looks like the court does not see a problem with the issue.....
<< <i>As far as the ACLU, they get a lot of bad press when they go off trying to defend some wack job who has killed a bunch of people, but they argue more cases before the US Supreme Court regarding our civil rights than any other organization and are instrumental in shaping the law of the land. >>
The ACLU is and has been instrumental in the ongoing destruction of the culture and society of the United States of America.

<< <i>Islam IS the fastest growing religion in the world, and it IS concievable that someday it could be the dominent religion in the US.
Condor, put down the bong. >>
Bong or not, this is already happening in France. If population trends continue as they are, France will be a Muslim nation in 50 years. The world changes...

Right on. If "God" is so fragile that removing His name from some shiny metal disks diminishes His influence, He wasn't much of a God in the first place, was He?

The good citizens of the Untied States and their second amendment will not let happen to us what is currently happening to the French.

That's what the South said before they lost the Civil War.

Different times and a different enemy. If an internal war were to erupt in this country between Muslims and Americans I have no doubt we would take the day.

IN ____ WE TRUST
No matter what you put in that blank, there will be a group of people who are not that who will complain about it. In Men We Trust? In Caucasians We Trust? In Straights We Trust? It's all ludicrous until you put God there, because no one cares about trampling over some "punk-ass" atheists' rights.
The US would have a 2nd civil war in this country before there is a muslim majority.....
