I stick to 1975 minis primarily, but back when I did shows in the late 80s and early 90s I specialized in 84 donruss. Still had most of a 5k box lying around and spent a couple hours culling for the best. Forgot how horrible centering was on these. Anyway, sent in 21:

You got 10's on 1/3 of the cards. That is not bad. A few lower pops also, nice job.

Thanks. That was a once in a lifetime shot though unless I expand my subs into much more common 10s. Keeping up with my main addiction (minis) means I wont be building an 84d set anytime soon, no matter how much I liked the set, then and now.

Also note that pjpmint spent almost $780 on two cards with pops 3 and 4. I need to take another look at my raw 84 Donruss for any more possible additions to Upsala's or pjpmint's collections.

having been a former collector of this set it amazes me the prices that are being paid. Guess I'll have to go back thru the cards I have left to see if any are worthy for grading that are low pops....
  • Hey guys... I'm back. A couple years, a divorce, a bad injury, and a career change... I'll be submitting and sharing scans soon.

Maybe I can pull a couple low pops. Is the Milke Staton still 2 of 2? Tough card, I got both 10s on the same sub. One went to another 84 junky (I thing Bug), the other sits in my stash. heres to lots of 10's and low pop 9s. I'll check in soon.
    Always buying 1984 Ralston Purina PSA 9s and 10s I NEED 19,21, and 29!!!
  • Here is some more eBay spam. I decided to sell off my unregistered 1984 Donruss set and put up 24-10's and 1-9 yesterday. I will put the rest up next week. I have some more difficult cards including:

    #76 Chuck Rainey 1/7 (Cubs)
    #165 Rick Camp 1/4 (Braves)
    #359 Bob McClure 1/10 (Brewers)

    Spahnfan,

Congrats on the grades. Those last two, Moreno and Fitz made my jaw drop. I can't tell you how much raw I went thru looking for decent ones to submit for 10-land. Major accomplishment IMO.

Thank you guys. Bug, I remember you saying that the Moreno card is the toughest(or at least one of the real toughies) in your opinion in the set. I did go through a lot of cards to finally get Moreno in a 10. I was curious how many of Fitzgerald and Moreno I have submitted.

I have submitted 5 Fitzgerald cards and received two 8's, two 9's and one 10.
I have submitted 9 Moreno cards and received one 8, six 9's and one 10. So six of the ten 9's in the pop report are my submissions.

Yes, Brent, I have gone through a lot of sets and wax packs to get these 10's. Probably too many. But so have you and Arny and the others that have built most of their set by submitting their own cards. The hunt is fun, a little frustrating and a little costly. But, hey, I have wasted a lot of money in other ways and have nothing to show for it.

Has anyone else noticed that the PSA 10 population for this set has recently increased pretty drastically?
  • Yes, there have been a ton of submissions since the prices got crazy on ebay. A couple of cases got busted and we knew that was coming. But a lot of renewed interest in the set is fun.

Sorry - forgot to turn on my pm a couple days ago. Was wondering if you guys on this thread usually stay away from ebay for 10s, are those ebay prices too high?
I just broke open three wax boxes and two factory sets. Both sets were mostly O/C and both had horrible reverse centering. One wax box had loads of miscuts and two wax boxes were very good, although I got just one Mattingly in all three boxes (9 quality). I do have several more cards going in with a new sub, I tried to focus on lower pop cards. Nothing like a pop 2, but I will hopefully have a few pop 3s, 4s and 5s (fingers crossed). A Brenley, for one.
  • Cool, Hammered. Keep us posted. I would have made a fair offer for the pop 2, but that's ok. I do buy off ebay when needed, but we try to keep Upsala from snatching up all the good cards with his neverending deep pockets.

  • Hello '84 Donnies,
I have browsed your thread and find it very interesting and it conjured up a question in my head. If you bought an unopened box of mid eighties cards, opened up one hundred cards, put everyone into a penny sleeve and card saver, submitted them the very next day to PSA. What would you expect to get back PSA Grade-wise. Make the assumption that the cards are all well-centered and don't submit the gum stained cards. I am thinking of starting a mid-eighties set, maybe '86 Fleer (first pack of cards I ever bought) or '86 Topps.

    Thanks,

<< <i>Make the assumption that the cards are all well-centered >>

    Major first mistake.

<< <i>If you bought an unopened box of mid eighties cards, >>

Packs could all have razor corners, or dinged corners depending on the handling of them. By the time a case-fresh box arrives at your door it could very well be considered a ding-fresh box. (not to be confused with ding-free)

Grades as you've suggested? Figure maybe a 10 here or there, but probably plenty of 5's - 8's.

Donruss had puzzle pieces and Fleer had stickers. So no gum stains, but some wax stains on the back of some cards.

  • Bug and Alf,
Thanks for the information. Wow, you've made me relook a perception I had about mid and late '80s cards, I figured there were so few collectors for these generations for only a couple reasons 1)age of collectors had not reached the point that nastalgia and/or extra money meet, 2) So much product made it them uninteresting and unchallenging. Now I need to reconsider point #2 and consider that those sets are quite daunting due to size, and challenging due to high percentage of factory-imperfect cards.
I am still interested in some of the other challenges that others have faced being a collector of '80s sets (graded or otherwise). '88 and '89 were probably the years that the highest percentage of my allowance went to cards.
  • WTB: Low POP PSA 10 cards of this set.
By low pop, I mean 10 or less please.
