  • Hey, did you guys notice the low ending prices on the 10's the 4SC was selling yestreday? A lot of low pops (2-8) went for only $15-$40! I'd like to think that maybe PJP was intentionally bidding lower on those so that the evil 4SC would not get any more money than necessary, but who know if that's really the case or not. On most of them, only he and Upsala were bidding, so I hope this doesn't mean those other few big bidders have been scared away.

  • Al, that stinks about the Kittle DK. I had a guy (Chris something) offer me a trade that we finally agreed upon where he was "dying" for a Kittle DK Steele. I finally got him to agree to a deal where he sent me a factory set of 1984 Donruss for the card and he agreed. I sent it to him in good faith and got nothing in return. I e-mailed him threatening mail fraud and all that, but nothing came about. I noticed that he had bid on a Kittle card a few months ago and e-mailed him again, but no dice. Hopefully it's not the same guy. image

On a good note for me.....after customer service checked on our sub today, we were told that it could be by early next week! image

Arny - If remembering correctly, I sold 'Chris' at least one(if not 2 or 3) dk Kittle Steele 9's and he paid for them. Then about a year later he emailed again. I had 2 he was dying to get; we agreed on a price and - nada. Then nada-nada-nada. Seemed like some personal stuff going on but regardless, the word 'flakey' comes to mind.

Bill, Arny, the guy who purchased the card was named Chris. Believe it's the same person. Don't know if a guy or gal but from picture I saw on their feedback forum I assume it's a guy. He also did the same to me, sending messages, asking for Kittle cards, etc, etc....guess I'll just have to negative and block the bidder from future purchases.

  • FYI....Brent, I'll be sending you an e-mail tonight.

Al, I would start the process for sure on this guy. He's not worth you even thinking about.

I hear ya Arny, it's just frustrating sometimes when you do the ebay thing.....and with my luck he'll be the first one to neg me. I must be having bad month, I also goofed on one of my ebay listings. I listed an item twice by accident and one of the people keeps paying me via paypal even after I told them I didn't have two cards......won't belabor on this topic, I listed it in the community thread asking for help.....at least I finally got the guys telephone number so I'll call him direct and hopefully clear it up....probably will be my second neg.....oh well

Arny - congrats on the 2 youngblood 9's. That was the last card I needed to complete the set. A bear and a half really.
  • Yeah, this Chris guy really gets around. He emailed me multiple times about Kittles. He asked some pretty bizzare stuff. Anyway, I think "flaky" is an understatement.

  • Well, I'm not terribly happy about not even getting one of the Horners graded! That means that I'm still one card short of completing the set. image

Plus, nearly all of these were pulled right from factory sets, so it shows that we still get those 'shorter' cards here and there. At least I pulled 9 10s and those Wilcox and Youngbloods feel good to get 9s on! image

    Thank you sir!

Honestly, I held back on sending in 6 of them because these three had real solid shots at 10s in my eyes. All of the cards that I sent in had real solid shots at 10s aside from the Youngbloods, Horners and Wilcox cards from what I remember.

Still great work Arny, especially with the way they seem to have tighten down on grading lately.

Al, I was a little bit nervous based on the grading going on, but I figured that if I pulled a card that looked like a 10, smelled like a 10....well, it would at least be a 9! image

Out of the 10s that I got, there is a 1 of 2 and a couple of 1 of 3s and 4s. So, not bad overall I guess. Looks like I'll have more going to my 'extras' set to sell/trade.

Talk about crappy centering on a psa 10 - look at this carter just listed from 4SC. They already have one listed (due to close in 4 hr) from a factory set with a $125 opening and $150 BIN. The new one (shown below) is $150 opening and $199 BIN. While obvious 4SC's left and right hands are unfamiliar with each other, that centering on a psa 10 should be outlawed. Pathetic. The only thing I can think of is that it's mislabeled and should have be given a 9. I can't fathom this card was correctly graded as a 10.

60/40 need for the front for a PSA 10, is this Carter not within that range??
  • ummmm.... yeah.... "technically" 60/40 is the criteria, but ask and regular person how many 10's they've received with centering approaching that and the silence will be deafaning. My first couple of subs had several cards in the 60/40 to 56/44 range with absoulutely NO other flaws and the ALL came back as 9's (and yes, I used digital calipers to measure several times). I think the general rule that most people go by when expecting 10's is no worse than 55/45 on the front. That's what I have been using for the last 2 subs and my results have definately improved. It's sad too cuz I have some real nice low/no pop 84 D's with centering just a bit worse than 55/45, but for issues like this where 9's are rarely sellable for even grading fee recoup, it just doesn't make sense to throw away $6 on like a 1/1,000 or worse shot (not for me anyway). Now granted, if you're 4SC or one of the other PSA-Preferred customers, 60/40 definately seems doable for a 10. Not very equitable but it's not like there's anything we can do about itimage

btw, congrats on those 10's and tough 9's Arny. Can't believe those Horners though... but overall a really good sub!

<<<<A PSA Gem Mint 10 card is a virtually perfect card. Attributes include four perfectly sharp corners, sharp focus and full original gloss. A PSA Gem Mint 10 card must be free of staining of any kind, but an allowance may be made for a slight printing imperfection, if it doesn't impair the overall appeal of the card. The image must be centered on the card within a tolerance not to exceed approximately 55/45 to 60/40 percent on the front, and 75/25 percent on the reverse. >>>>

As you can see from psa's own description, there's wiggle-room. Maybe someone can do a L/R border pixel count on this card, but in my mind a psa 10 is all about eye appeal. With centering bordering on 60/40 or possibly even less the eye appeal on this baby is bad. Very bad IMO.

no help to the presentation, I agree that it seems to be the lower level 10...

Arny, that is a very good sub. You did miss on a couple that I know would have made your day, but you did get some other outstanding cards. Caudill was only a pop 2, as was the Ruhle, the Hammaker has always been tough and was only a pop 3, and of course the Whitson was only a pop 1. Then two 9 Youngblood's! How many collectors would give their left arm for just one. You did good, Arny.

just wanted to stop by and say hey....hey!!
  • Well, I finally ended up winning a couple of factory sets yesterday. Seems like the last few weeks, they have mostly been going for well over $100, with some in the $120 range. I bid on a few of those but my max bid was nowhere near good enough. Yesterday, one seller had 2 listed... both ending at about the same time. I put bids in on both within the last 2 minutes and amazingly ended up winning the first for $77 and the second for a great price of $61! Based on what I've seen, an average price of $69 per set is pretty darn good for these. Hopefully, they're both from a good batch and I can pull some 10's from them. I may post some scans when I receive and break the sets next week.

Good luck on those sets Jim....if you get centering on the DK's it could make it a worthwhile buy.

    Hi,
After a week of going through my new to me 84 Donruss set. I have pulled the cards which were low pop commons or superstars that I feel have the best shot at grading high. There were some other nice cards, but the pop is too high to make good money on them. I'm going to send them in under the set registry $5.00 per card special, and I hope to hit some 10's to sale on some low pop commons and a couple superstars. This is my first submission, I've been over the cards with a magnifier and all look to me like they have a shot at what I would envision a 10 at (except for the centering on the Darling but that's for a friend to have anyway), but like I said I'm a rookie at this.

What do you feel these grades would grade?? Do you see any 10's here? If so, which ones? If you see any black spots like on the corner of the Beniquez, they are on my scanner only, not on the card. Honest opinions please, your criticisms won't bother me, they'll help me become a better screener. Thanks,

    Mike

Good luck Mike, may the PSA gods be with you!!! cards look nice.
  • Well, without getting out the calipers, and assuming no corner dings or other major flaws, I'd say that most of them look like they have a shot at a 10. So, out of 24 good shots, you're probably looking at 7-8 10's imo. Oddly enough, aside from the Mattingly, you should hope for 10's on the low pops instead of the superstarsimage

That would be a great bonus as far as I'm concerned. I just hope that most of the corners are good. If so, I should be able to turn a decent profit. Should be getting them by tomorrow, so we will see.

I ended up sending in 19 of them. I took out the Darling, Davis, Checklist, Gossage, and Butcher. If I get 7-8 10's, I'll be ecstatic, especially if I get it on Mattingly and the rest on the low pops. I've been over and over them with a small magnifier, but like I indicated, this is my first sub for grading, so I"ll just have to wait and see. If some of mine are not 10's, then there is truly some amazing cards out there.

  • Well, I cracked about half of 1 of my 2 factory set recieved last week. The good news is the cards are rock-solid fresh with little to no apparent corner or edge damage. The not-so-good news is that the centering is less than average, for the most part. Checking the Mattingly, Ryan, the DK's and the other key very low-pop cards in the first half of the set, I'd say little or no chances at PSA 10's. There may be a chance on some pop-2's and up but I only checked 0-1 pops so far. The Mattingly may be worthy of an 8 or 8.5 max. I'll spend some more time with this over the next week or so and report back if I find any gems.
