  • Thanks Brent... I almost had a heart attack on that one. $26 right up until the last second. I would have felt especially bad since I was selling this on consignment for Piman58 and I know he was expecting at least $100 for it. I too would be really curious to see what Upsala's max is on these low pop cards. Seems as though he has unlimited fundsimage

Thanks Ichiro, I too was nervous as the time dwindled. Brent, thanks for bidding, I was hoping you might have been able to win this one.
    Any significance to 177.77?

The Hickey was the only 10 I have received from PSA. I will have to look at my other 84's for possible submission before upsaallamerican
    completes his set. image

With upsalaallamerican paying what he's paying for 10s, I'm very tempted to put my low pop 10s for sale. image

But, now with Brent making the moves that he's making on the set, I think that the competition might keep me going!

But, those prices sure are tough to pass up.

  • I know what you mean Arny. These prices could add up quickly on a few 1 of 1's. But I've worked so hard to get to this point, I think I'm gonna keep mine.

Ichiro, Yeah I bet you were nervous with no movement on that card until a couple of seconds left! And yes, the guy is loaded. He is buying everything.

Piman, you're welcome. Glad you got some good money for that tough card. And 7 is a Biblical number that I always liked, so I try to end all my bids with 77.

And I'll be darned if upsala.. is gonna pass me up!! lol

  • I do a similar thing with my bids (on the rare occasion that I am actually a buyer and not a seller). Since Ichiro is my favorite current player, I almost always end my bids with .51 image

Gonna be really interesting to see what I get back on my current sub. I only sent 25 cards in but about half were 84 D low pops. I sent this in 2 weeks ago today and just realized that I had not yet rec'd a confirmation e-mail from PSA. So I tracked it on USPS.com and found that the package just arived there this morning... 2 FULL WEEKS from the mailing date! And I live in Oregon... less than 1,000 miles away from PSA, so what the hell took so long USPS? Yet another reason to avoid the PS like the plague during the Christmas season I guess.

  • That's cool about the .51 thing Ichirofan.

And boy, I'm glad you said that about your current sub!! I sent one in on the 18th, and hadn't got confirmation and was starting to panic! Thanks! You are so right about avoiding this time of year with our subs!

By the way, do you have Ichiro's '93 Japanese RC's and his Hawaiian cards?

  • Yeah, and my order will probably sit at PSA for another week before they log it in, lol!

Unfortunately, I don't have many Ichiro cards as I really stopped collecting back in 1991-92. I did get a couple of his Topps Rookie cards for a good price but they are not graded. Other than that, I only have a few various more recent cards of his, but nothing to brag about. I've considered looking for some big Ichiro lots on ebay just to try to make a dent and to see some really cool cards that I have never laid eyes on. I'll have to start looking for those again...

I wanted to add the first scans of the new year! image

These are the last two cards that I picked up. One is the TOUGH Mario Soto card that Tom traded me and the other is a recent upgrade for me.

  • Very cool Arny!! #4000. 1714 more and you'll tie Nolan! lol '84 D rules! You da man!
No updates. Haven't got my package yet from the subs that I told you the scores on. Busted a box recently and got some really clean cards, but not many that I need. Oh well. I can't believe you haven't gotten yours back yet! Man, that is slow! They finally received my sub that I sent on Dec. 18th! Man that Christmas rush is a doosey! Oh well, at least their safe. None of those were '84 D though.

Arnie, I have gotten back results on a couple of 84 Donruss subs. The first three are mechanical corrections. The next group is what I needed to finish my registry set. I got close. Missed on a few, but there were a few that made up for it. Finally got my Horner in a 9. Numbers 93 to 133 are factory set cards. Half of the 8's I received on the sub were from these factory cards. All came straight from the wrappers to CS1's. That is why I was wondering how the rounding of some corners from the cello's would affect the grades in an earlier post.

Wow, nearly 40 psa 10s! Nice job!

Especially on the Clancy and M.Wilcox cards! Great job!

Congrats on the Horner too! That's a tough one!

Are any of these for sale/trade? And more importantly, how close are you to finishing the set now?

Thanks guys. Overall I was pleased with the sub. I did get a few more 8's than I thought I would get, but some of the other cards made up for it. The Kittle Steel was kind of tough for me to get. I was happy with that one, and of course the Horner, Ramsey, Staub and the Wilcox.

Arny, I am now over 98% on the set. I will never reach the lofty levels of the weighted GPA that you and Brent have achieved, but I hope to raise it a few points before I am done. My duplicates are for trade. Let me put the cards in the set this week and see what extras I have.

Should have been Steel instead of Steele. Oh well. I have all the cards in the master set except for 11 cards in 9 or 10. 8's and 9oc's on those toughies. Brent, I checked my duplicates for the cards I still need to finish my Registry set. It looks like I have cards that should get a 9 on all the cards except the 8, 16, and 23 Steele and 47 Murray. Until I get a sub back to see if I still missed on some, I would only like to only trade for these four. The problem is you and Arny do not have these cards for trade. I would love to help you both, and anyone else for that matter, with your sets, but at the same time I want to be able to finish my set. I am not quite sure what to do. Any suggestions?

A related question--if I do want to list duplicates I have for trade, is it permissable to do it on this thread, or should I list them on the Buy-Sell-Trade Forum?

WOW, congratulations Brent. I hadn't checked the registry listings for awhile and today noticed that there has been a coup and Arny has been overthrown. Don't be too confortable though, I'm sure Arny has something up his sleeve and will soon restore order to the registry!image This is why I like this thread. Everyone seems to be having fun and helping the others out......I had to bail on my set but who knows, sometime down the road I may have to mount another challenge, although getting a complete 10 set is a CHALLENGE!!!

    Happy new year everyone.

  • Thanks Al! Yeah, it's a challenge all right. Whew! But it's been a lot of fun also. And expensive. lol

Spahnfan, I'm not sure the answer to your question. I do most of my buying/selling on ebay.

Brent, I see that you updated your set and your only a 'mechanical mislabeling fix' away from completing the master set! Congrats on the "basic" set being at 100% though! • Yeah Arny! It's pretty cool. I sent off the mislabeled card, so hopefully in a few weeks both will be 100%! I know you're right there with me on the percentage once you get your sub back, so you'll probably get complete before I do on the master. At least I got 100% on the basic like you said. I figure I have around 100 cards out of the 689 that are not 10 on the master. I hope you get your sub back soon! imageimage

You probably all have these cards but thought I'd offer just in case someone needs any. I have the following PSA 9's left from my old registry set:

    71, 74, 96, 98, 278, 290, 292, 306, 308, 333, 336, 349, 387, 389, 390, 508, 611 and 628

If anyone needs any of them let me know. Otherwise I'll probably just throw them on ebay.

  • Hey guys, sorry I've been away for a while... going through a tough stretch with work and some other things lately and haven't bad much time to check in here. Nice to hear about your succesfull subs Brent. PSA finally logged my order (with about 15 84D low pops)... 1 full month after I mailed it. Pretty discouraging to say the least. I'm just getting a really bad feeling about this sub, even though I probably put more work into these 25 cards than I did for my last 135-card sub. Just seems like I'm on a bad luck swing lately and I'm fearful it will carry over to this sub. On the other hand, it could be a slump-buster and break me out of my funk. Unfortunately, it will probably be well into March before I even know. Ahhhh March... thank god baseball season is almost right around the corner!

What do the 84D guys think of the half-grade move? Personally, I don't like it - they can't even get the standard 1-10 correct and consistant at times - how are they going to do this with any consistency on half-points?!?!?
  • I agree BOTR, this really sucks. Really bad and unnecessary. The whole collecting community seems to be against it, so who are all these supposed people begging for this?? The only redeeming thing I've read so far is that they aren't doing 9.5. So at least the integrity of 9's and 10's remains intact.

  • Well, since this is my favorite forum, I wanted to post this here first. Amazingly, my 25-card sub popped yesterday (to think, I was so busy yesterday I forgot to check on it)! Maybe they felt bad because they held the thing for 2 weeks before it was logged... who knows. Well, not to the results. Percentage-wise, this was easily the best of the 5 subs I've had to date. My takes:
1- For 84 Donruss, the big one (obviously) is the Rogers 10... a 1/1! I really, really had high hopes for this one and amazingly, they came through! Also got 10's on Stenhouse No# (1/5) and Bell (1/4). Would have rather had the 10's on Wilson and Butcher, but I am by no means complaining... still pretty low pops on these! Got 9's on most of the rest of the 84D, with the exception on the Mattingly and Wilson. The Mattingly was a pull from 12 Racks I ripped a few months back. I assessed this as an 8 myself, so no complaints there. The Wilson 5 simply baffles me... this had a great shot at a 10 and no worse than 9, so obviosuly I must have missed something major (not sure how). Overall, actually a little better than expected with the 84D.

2- The rest: 2 Rices @ 8... expected 7's or 7 & 8 so this is a plus! The 3 '83 Topps 9's are 1/1's with no 10's. We'll see if there's a market for them. The 2 Topps Ripkens were pulled from a Cello box from BBCE a couple of months ago. Grades of 9OC & 8 are about what I expected, so I am pleased. The fleer Ripken 9 was a great surprise! The other 3 I've had graded from my personal collection only got 8, 8 & 7 and I thought this one was no better than any of those. The '72 Topps results were mixed. Happy with the 7 Munson and the 8's on the 2 hi numbers, but was expecting 8's on the Torre and Grote and got 6's.

Overall though, I am really happy with this one! Really only 3 big disappointments with the Griffin, Torre & Grote, but those are probably offset by the better than expected on Ripkens & Rices. The 84D 9's, I hope to at least recoup grading costs. To me though, the Rogers 10 is what made this sub! Can't complain about the other 2 10's eitherimage I guess I will go ahead and continue with my 84D low-pop project a while longerimage

as an ex 84D'er I am impressed with your 84 Donruss grades.....way to go. You must have missed a hairline crease on that Wilson....or they dropped it when they received it!! I am waiting on a large submission of 65 Topps cards that I submitted back in December, hopefully any day nowimage
  • Nice job Ichirofan! Congrats on that Rogers!! What a tough card!! And the Bell and Stenhouse as well!!

Wow Jim! Great job on the Rogers....is it available for sale/trade? image

Also, great job on the Stenhouse and Bell cards as well as that Griffin. For some reason that was a tough one for me to find at one time, but I found three or four (submitted three, I believe) that has shots at 10s. Went from finding none to hittin' the mutha load!

Bill...as far as the 1/2 grades....I don't think that it'll affect us '84 Donruss guys as we go for 9s at minimum. But, I'm not happy overall. As a matter of fact, I've started looking into going with SGC on some non-sport sets that I'm looking to submit. Anyways, I'm not sure that I'm going to have an issue with the 1/2 grades except for the fact that I'm going to be piecing my '57 Topps set again. If they would've done 9.5s....things would be A LOT different and I would be highly unlikely to use them in the future.

I agree with Arny on the half grading. The sets I collect are all being completed ( or at least I'm trying to complete them) in PSA 9. Now if they had a 9.5 it would be a different answer. I think that this will affect collectors of older sets both ways. If you happen to have a bunch of 8's that appear to be almost 9's it would probably be worth resubmitting.....you could then sell if they go higher and purchase another 8 if your intent is to maintain a "straight 8" set. So you win both ways, a little extra money from selling your 8.5, you repurchase a straight 8 for your collection at hopefully a lower price and have a few bucks left to have a few more cards graded or regraded. I know a lot of folks who have large inventories seem to be against this but I'm small potatoes as far as that goes.....
