I'll bet Morty is doing cartwheels right now with his 84D auction results. $257 for Darling nno in psa 10?!? Couple of other +$100's for 1/2, 1/3, and 1/4 commons ?!?!

Wow - I better dig back into my raw again at these prices!
  • StingrayStingray Posts: 8,843 ✭✭✭
Sure seems like there are a few more bidders (and willing to bid high) for the 84 Donruss, why the sudden interest??
  • Guys,

Here are the scans from my portion of the recent box break .....

Overall I identified 14 possible 10's in my 9 packs, including a few very low pops.....

    They are:

And here are two PSA 9 candidates for some toughies:

Good luck to the other 3 guys!

That Doug Flynn card looks a little off top to bottom?? But still could garner a 10, I have an 84 Donruss that is a PSA 10 with just about the same centering. I have been looking for a PSA 10 of that card. Reason: loved the white Montreal Expos uniforms back then.

    robert,
no idea, but usually when someone offers the same thing a second time it won't be nearly as sweet $-wise.

It wasn't that long ago that high pop psa 10's could be bought for around $6 each - go figure.
Then you see a Carney Lansford psa 10 go for a pultry $13, which was an absolutely huge steal on a tough card - go figure.
Then we find Morty's and Larryvan's middle-of-the-road stuff go for crazy money - go figure.

Just the ebay ebb and flo I guess...................
  • This has always been one of the few modern sets with legs. A testament to the quality of the photography, richness of color and a flat out nice design. I enjoyed every minute of my brief run with these bad boys!
Always great to see the enthusiasm here in this thread too!

I can't wait to get my quarter box! image

Hopefully I'll get some beautifully centered cards that I need to complete the set, I hope. image

I love to see the high prices on those 10s! image But then, you see some of the tougher cards (like Lansford) go for a lot less then it should go for. Oh well, great for that buyer!

  • I opened my 9 packs from the 84D wax box bust. The centering overall was above average. I received more centered cards than the 70/30 or worse variety. That is very unusual. There were very few low pop cards in any condition. The six that I show in the scan are the only ones with nice centering and a fairly low population. Only a handful that are slightly off center (and would not grade a 10 on centering alone) had pop numbers at 5 or below in a 9. I got only one star card. That was a Reggie Jackson that was about 70/30 and had a couple of edge dings and one slight corner ding. Someone should get a boatload of star cards in the other half of the box!

I had an o/c Carter and wax stained Nolan Ryan.
    You had a Reggie
Al seems to have pretty much nothing in the star dept.

I knew it was bound to happen sooner or later, but I beleive that I have been bitten by the 84D bug. I also want to let you know that I blame every one of you. How dare you post these incredible scans when you know I am weak!

I try not to read these posts but you have me hypnotized and the force is to strong and I have caved...I hope you are happy!

It started innocently enough with the CU pack rips. As soon as I opened the 84D's, I went under your spell. I couldn't help myself and I called up Steve at BBCE and he is one of you! He sold me 3 Rack Packs and just for good measure and to make sure that I would be hooked, he used his powers and in one of the Rack Packs I pulled a Mattingly Rookie and a really nice Ryan.

Well now you will have put up with me buying your dupes, bidding against you on the evil ebay and trying to out do you on the registry set.

I hope you are all happy now!

Here is a scan of the Ryan and Mattingly. The Ryan isn't to bad it is OC, but not as bad as the Mattingly. I am still pretty pleased with the Rack Packs that I received from Steve. It looks like there could be some 10's. Anyways thanks for looking!

EDIT: Does anyone currently have any 9's or 10's for sale? I am looking forward to adding my first card. Please PM me with any that you may have. Thanks!

I just picked up a Tony Gwynn PSA 10 from a board member! Not a bad first card. image

bunker, even with the centering that mattingly looks good. colors look gorgeous on both matt and ryan. good luck in your qwest for the 84d set. i really enjoy seeing the posts on this thread as well. i've got a few at psa now and when they come back i'll post for you guys. the carters i've pulled as of late have all been OC as well. it makes you appreciate the value of a carter 10 when you see one pop up every now and then.

    Thanks,

    David (LD_Ferg)

  • Arny,

wow -- an entire box with no Mattingly and very little stars.

On the plus side the condition was at the very least above average, but I was hoping one of us would pull a Donnie Baseball.

oh well, it was fun as always.

PS I'm hoping my Slaton yields a 9.

I just went through the 3 rack packs that I got from BBCE and I have a question. I noticed that some cards were more "vibrant" and were more "glossy" than other cards. Are those the ones that have a better shot at a 10? or can a card that appears to be "washed "out also receive a 10?

Here are a couple of scans of some of the better centered cards. I have not completely checked out the pop reports yet, or what I could purchase them for all ready graded on ebay, but once I do cards from this group (if worth the grading fees) would be among the first ones that I would submit.

You can also see by the scans below how the first 3 cards have more color than say the next 3 cards.

Great to have you on board Bunker!

The '84 Donruss set does have that tractor beam affect on people. They are beautiful cards and the set is so in demand but still with decent amount of product which gives it a nice balance. Still a challenge, but not impossible at all.

Good luck and we'll be battlin' on the 'Bay! image

I promise that this will be the last time I post scans of these (today any way), but I just noticed this card from the rack packs. Again it is OC or maybe MC?, but for just 3 rack packs I think I did pretty good:

Bunker, I'm not sure the answer to your question. They shouldn't have any problem getting a 9, but my guess would be that a card really washed out would struggle to get a 10. I just haven't submitted enough cards to know yet (I've probably submitted 40 total). A guy like Bkritz or BugonaRug may know.

    Your scanned cards look great!

Just a little OC, but not enough for a qualifier though. I think it's OC enough to be a PSA 8 though. I've got a PSA 8 of the Numbered version of the Darling that I'll be including in my list to you via PM in a little while.
