I snagged the Chris Short. Was that yours too?

Hopefully you made out like a bandit.

I believe all the ‘72s were his except for four major stars.

Nice Burda indeed... Never had that card in my final set in 9.

I owned it earlier and sold it for like $100 assuming the pop would increase and I could buy it back later. Never happened.

$34 is a good price for C. Short.

Miss the set... Want to start all over. However, day care for child #2 precludes that for now. Still tons of fun to watch.

I did see some of those cards stating breaking up # 1 set, and was waiting for that set to drop as I currently have the #2 set but it never happened. Just thought the description was bogus, but after reading, maybe not. And I can't believe someone paid $1100 for the Barton IA PSA 9

And then they paid $1291 for Foli IA. Gracious.

Yeah, I was pretty happy with the result of the Foli IA card. As always, Dave (Paul Maul) snagged some nice ones!

Can I get another opinion here. Someone just put up a PSA 10 #210 Denny McLain. pop count is 7 but I've only seen 1 in the last year. asking $315...sounds a little high. card looks okay to me, but my eyes aren't as sharp anymore. can anyone help me out with this?

@JRR300 The card looks nice. Definitely overpriced though. At this population level and given past sales I think $125-150 is more realistic.

I think I paid $180 for McLain Traded. Might have been $200. Sometime in early 2018 I think.

Thanks for the help. I think I paid around $200 for the TRADED, and thats a high number.

I had some great luck at the White Plains show yesterday. A dealer there who mostly deals in 50s & 60s star cards had bought a 1972 set. He had no interest in grading any of the commons and I spent 1.5 hours going through the whole set pretty thoroughly. I cherry picked 25 cards I need for my set, all of which have near perfect corners. He gave them to me incredibly cheaply, basically just the raw Beckett high price. After going through them more carefully at home, I have 19 cards I am confident will be PSA 9s with many having a shot at a 10. Now if only I had an affordable way to submit them! No super tough cards unfortunately. There was a Ken Brett among them but the vertical centering was just out of the PSA 9 range. Incredibly fun!

Whew! I am finally at the end of this thread. My project for this year is to build a nice 1972 Topps set. However, I am not building it graded.

My first question(s): For those of you who have built a complete graded set, I believe it is 787 cards: How much does that set weigh and how large an area does it occupy?

I can tell you that it occupies one storage bin that holds about 400 cards and a shelf about 3 ft long that hold the other almost 400. Shelf is wide enough to go two deep and high enough to hold 50 cards, with still enough room to maneuver. Couldn't get a larger storage container...too heavy to lift for me.

Thanks Mike, especially easy to deal with you also. I know you cleaned up all the cards you needed from my doubles. I still have a fair amount in PSA 9 grade with no qualifiers if anyone else is looking. Anyway, I sold six groups to members on this post; all were great and extremely easy to deal with. Thanks and good luck.

What is going on with these PSA 10 prices on EBAY. I realize that one person is buying them all, but that doesn't account for these prices going for double what they normally would. Are there people just running up the price on this guy? Any ideas? I'm curious, because his set is private and he has over 90% complete, so how do they know which cards he will bid on.

Seems pretty silly for a pop 6 and not even a high number. I guess it’s just a case of two people placing nuclear snipes figuring no one else would do the same.

I think I paid $65 for my 9 and I don’t like this card better.

I was checking it out and stopped watching when it got up over $250 with hours still to go. was shocked to see how much. Your assumption sounds about right. Can't imagine anyone would have thought it would have gone for that. I'm guessing the guy who lost is pretty happy today!

Hi All - Wow! I finally go to the end of this thread.
I just started collecting this set. I started with a group of around 1,500, gathered from some sharp eBay lots as well as the great help of 2 CU board members. I need around 115 cards to complete the set. Wondering if any other 1972 collectors have some they are willing to sell at reasonable prices. My set is really sharp - think good PSA 7 quality. I am collecting the set ungraded but do have some in PSA holders. Looking at eBay, folks seem to be asking too much for the high numbers in particular. I may need to be patient to finish out this set.

I just have a general type question pertaining to the PSA registry price guides, this set in particular. It just seems to me that the prices on the guide have not changed, yet the prices on the open market appear to be much, much higher. Do they ever adjust those guide values, especially on the 9's and 10's? Also, if there is another place to look which might provide more current info. I see that PSA has started to list Ebay sales, but they all don't reflect there. Maybe some of the more experienced collectors may have some advice. Thanks.

The price guide is useless. It bears no resemblance to reality. Checking previous sales is the only way to go. I use VCP.
