I had some great luck at the White Plains show yesterday. A dealer there who mostly deals in 50s & 60s star cards had bought a 1972 set. He had no interest in grading any of the commons and I spent 1.5 hours going through the whole set pretty thoroughly. I cherry picked 25 cards I need for my set, all of which have near perfect corners. He gave them to me incredibly cheaply, basically just the raw Beckett high price. After going through them more carefully at home, I have 19 cards I am confident will be PSA 9s with many having a shot at a 10. Now if only I had an affordable way to submit them! No super tough cards unfortunately. There was a Ken Brett among them but the vertical centering was just out of the PSA 9 range. Incredibly fun!
Those are some nice raw pick ups from the White Plains show, pretty rare to find 9 type raw still out there.
As far as the Expos team card goes, a bidder like this takes a lot of the fun in trying to put this set together out of it. This is at least the third recent card I know of I’ve needed for my set, looks like it’s next to impossible to outbid this guy. The market has been set for this card with all of the past sales, can it go up if one of them hasn’t come to the auction block in while? Yes, but it’s currently approaching 4 x VCP. And again, stacked bids for everyone else to play with
The Expos team card only went for $1350, think the bidder had 5 (yes, 5) other stacked bids that had not been breached. Now if 4SC would happen to get a 9 on one they’ll list south of a grand
Not the prettiest 9 either. But if it says 9 on the label ...

I concur, that’s about as good as that card is gonna get. 8 stacked bids? I think that guy is screwing with us now. Again, I’m sure Matt (seller) is pleased at the results. He probably would have been happy if it went for a grand less
Agreed. If you're waiting for an 8 or even a 9 with no tilt, you'll be waiting forever.

This is why I sold the set when I did. I can't fathom paying prices like these for the low pop cards - cards I don't even have any sentimental value for - and even though all of the recent VCP sales are lower, I imagine that there could be aftershocks for awhile, with someone listing an Expos Team for $799, and then one selling at auction for $600, etc.
I’ve been growing increasingly frustrated. I don’t think I’ve won a ‘72 auction in 6 months. Ready to throw in the towel on this set until this lunatic bidder gets tired of throwing his money away.
Just wanted to stop in, introduce myself, and focus my attentions to my '72 set. Having just reached 100% on another of my 1970's sets, 1972 is the next mountain to climb. My set is now at #40 on the registry (Bill's 401(k) Plan) as I've been picking up cards here and there for several years. Any advise, info, hot leads, etc would be a welcomed start. Hope to get to know many of you and maybe even make some deals with a few.
I love to trade and have several '72s as well as many other 1970-1979 PSA cards available. Hello to everyone and feel free to reach out to me.

I heard from the seller (Matt) who sold the Expos team card; he said it was a consignment piece and that the card got bumped from an 8 to a 9. Decent 8, weak sauce 9. Really surprised PSA would bump a tough low pop that wasn’t exactly a blazer 8

If it was a bump why would it have a new cert number?

Any bumps I’ve gotten come in a new holder with the old cert number. Just repeating what the seller said, he’s always been a straight shooter so I’m sure it’s true.
Yeah this was discussed before. Kind of slimy move advertising it as the #1 set being broken, when in fact there’s nothing about that set getting pieced out
The card below is available for sale or trade. I’m working on the set, but I’m not a PSA 10 guy. I bought it raw on eBay. It’s one of 8. Last one sold for more than $800.
That does look really sharp. I've been looking for a nice Speier In Action for a while now and he was auctioning off a PSA 9 that was laughably bad. Presumably he's upgraded to a PSA 10 or upgraded from that particular 9. It does make you wonder though, # 1 set or not, how many cards in his set have eye appeal that's not so eye-appealing.

I did see some of those cards stating breaking up # 1 set, and was waiting for that set to drop as I currently have the #2 set but it never happened. Just thought the description was bogus, but after reading, maybe not. And I can't believe someone paid $1100 for the Barton IA PSA 9
I noticed that too. Seems like the only ones left are so far overpriced they'll be there forever. I had bid on 2 PSA 10's last night, thought my bids were very aggressive and lost both.
just checked the auctions I had bid on and the others I had watched on EBAY. All won by the same person. Looks like they want them all, no matter what the price

This guy’s not fooling around! In five days he went from 14.87% to 40.79%, and it appears to be all 10s!

looks like he uses a snipe service. if he does this and bids crazy money, I guess there's no way to outbid him if he wants something?????
Yup, seen this before from another. Best to just stay out of the way and regroup once the dust settles.

Make that 8 stacked bids (see above). He just kept stacking until the bitter end.

Yeah, I guess that's the down side of people running this guy up, it ends up a VCP data point.
why stack bids ?

Oh, and welcome Bill. I know I’ve dealt with you many times before in your pursuits of completing other sets
If it was a bump why would it have a new cert number?
seriously, ?

Is it really a set break if there's only 49 cards?
strange

The guy selling those cards owns the number 1 set, but the cards he’s been selling are just extras, not the number 1 set itself. False advertising.
The number 1 set is almost all 10s.

Did someone just buy basically all of the PSA 10s on the market?
Every 4SC PSA 10 is gone. A bunch of Probstein's too.
If that Mets' Team card went for ~$1500 ... Wow ... I bought that card from Novick for $175. Pays to be a card dealer!
Might it be related to this?
I noticed that too. Seems like the only ones left are so far overpriced they'll be there forever. I had bid on 2 PSA 10's last night, thought my bids were very aggressive and lost both.

Must be nice
