And his classically foolish bidding pattern is in full force. See how he doubled up on his high bid of $500 when the bidding was at $410. That makes it clear to all that there’s plenty of room to run him up and the $585 bid was made shortly thereafter.
$585 isn't a bad price for the Barton. Even $710 isn't terrible. It's not good, but he didn't get killed on that card like he did on the Danny Cater, for instance.
Now whoever just bought my (previously) Johnny Bench in PSA 9 for $720 from 4SC, however... I've obviously seen that card up close, and while it's centered, it definitely is not a 10.

You may say $710 is not bad given that it’s the toughest 9 in the set, but it’s still almost double the last two previous sales.
The Jerry Johnson is now up to $250, our buddy 0**y is still high bidder, of course with a stacked bid. I need one more card to finish the high numbers in all 9’s and 10’s, doubt I’d bid crazy like this guy does even for a centered example of the card I need.
Now people are messing with him. These bidders coming in over $300 have been nowhere to be found on other 1972 auctions, from what I’ve seen, and Jerry Johnson IA Just isn’t that good of a card.

No, I meant to imply that someone who bought the card hoping to potentially resubmit as a 10 would be disapponted - and that it’s not a $720 card otherwise, as I bought it about two/three years ago for $325.
There’s no rationale for this value on the card. I did a best offer on a PSA 9 Rick Wise in Action for like $55 last year that had sat for a couple of days. It has basically the same pop numbers, only difference being the Wise has some 10s and the Johnson has none.
I recently got the Pattin 9 for just over $100, it is in the same ballpark as the Johnson, 21 9s and 5 10s.
Bidder i**e is obviously messing with him (again, the guy is asking for it), he bids it up and stops when the lower bid has been surpassed. I just sent Matt (the seller) a message asking if he’s enjoying the bidding
When Paul Schaal IA PSA 9 comes up, it’s going to go berserk. Hasn’t been one on EBay in over two years.
I will say that population has become increasingly less associated with availability with this set. Fred Kendall is pop 21 (I think) with no 10s, but has been readily available recently. Jerry Johnson IA hasn’t been on EBay in 1.5 years, after turning up regularly for awhile.
It’s like when an idiot who doesn’t know the rules shows up at a blackjack table and messes it up for everyone (I guess in this case except for Matt the seller)
I think the $588 price is correct, but yes it was up to $591 yesterday. When the underbidder bid $581 it should’ve only bumped it up to the lowest stacked bid. If there were no stacked bids and the highest bid was $588 it should remain there even if the underbid is $587.99
High bidder 0**y comes back today and throws more bids on this card, he could’ve been punished a whole lot more.
Earlier in this thread two posters said they were interested in this card, as was I. Going against someone with a whole lot more money than sense does take some fun out of it
And the high bidder really has a screw loose. Sensing that he’s being run up, he waits until the last twenty minutes to pile on more bids. Why not just snipe the highest amount? What about that is so hard to comprehend?
Incidentally, doesn’t the phrase “#1 PSA set registry break” suggest that you’re breaking up and selling the #1 set? As opposed to keeping the #1 set and selling off some of your leftovers and extras, as this appears to be?

Agreed, that is some serious false advertising. I talked to the seller and he said it’ll only be 100-200 cards total

Wow that Kline’s a beauty. Tough card
Here comes some more 0**y punishment bidding!

Found another one, this guy never learns. Card is already three times VCP and he’s got one topper on his high bid
Very annoying too, because I really wanted this card.
Me too. And I agree.
The Jerry Johnson is now up to $250, our buddy 0**y is still high bidder, of course with a stacked bid. I need one more card to finish the high numbers in all 9’s and 10’s, doubt I’d bid crazy like this guy does even for a centered example of the card I need.
$321!
No, make that $340. Almost five times VCP and he’s still got his bid stacked!
You’d think he could see what is happening. He would have won the Barton if he had just placed a $700 snipe.
Now people are messing with him. These bidders coming in over $300 have been nowhere to be found on other 1972 auctions, from what I’ve seen, and Jerry Johnson IA Just isn’t that good of a card.
He’s asking for it
who is this crazy guy...
and do u mean your card was a 9 and now it was sold as a 10 by 4 sharp corners ?

$456, the card is pop 25! Not the easiest card to come by in the set but nowhere near the toughest.
There’s no rationale for this value on the card. I did a best offer on a PSA 9 Rick Wise in Action for like $55 last year that had sat for a couple of days. It has basically the same pop numbers, only difference being the Wise has some 10s and the Johnson has none.

The lower of his two bids still hasn’t been reached!
$496! The lower bid has been breached!
Honestly I wouldn’t think a pop 1 10 would get this insane
Let’s make a run for the Norm Cash PSA 9 for $2550 at this point. Push it!
Bidder i**e is obviously messing with him (again, the guy is asking for it), he bids it up and stops when the lower bid has been surpassed. I just sent Matt (the seller) a message asking if he’s enjoying the bidding

So anyone remember when the oglivie rookie 1972 went for 1200?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Major_League_Baseball_players_from_Panama
You mean a PSA 10? One went for $2500 in 2009, now that there are 14 10s it appears to be worth $600-1000. 9s seem to go for about $150.

I have my self-submitted 9. Too bad for you Cey is on the card also, or it would be a lot cheaper!
Just shy of $600 and he re-stacked his bid. Now if 4SC or another seller comes up with one it’ll be listed for a BIN at $500+
It’s not really stacked at the moment because the $588 bid is exposed though it hasn’t been exceeded.
It’s like when an idiot who doesn’t know the rules shows up at a blackjack table and messes it up for everyone (I guess in this case except for Matt the seller)
Yeah, Matt’s thinking it’s not quite high enough yet
Can anyone explain why the current bid went down to $588? Shouldn’t it have to be $591, which I believe it previously was?
In fact here is the email reminder I got at 10:03 Pacific Time. What gives?
I think the $588 price is correct, but yes it was up to $591 yesterday. When the underbidder bid $581 it should’ve only bumped it up to the lowest stacked bid. If there were no stacked bids and the highest bid was $588 it should remain there even if the underbid is $587.99

I understand your point about the $588, but then why was it at $591, and why did piling on more bids change it to $588?
And the high bidder really has a screw loose. Sensing that he’s being run up, he waits until the last twenty minutes to pile on more bids. Why not just snipe the highest amount? What about that is so hard to comprehend?
Lets say for arguments sake his highest bid was $750, if he would have set that as a snipe he probably would’ve won that card for under $200

Here we go again, another 1972 on my want list and look who’s bidding already
Incidentally, doesn’t the phrase “#1 PSA set registry break” suggest that you’re breaking up and selling the #1 set? As opposed to keeping the #1 set and selling off some of your leftovers and extras, as this appears to be?
Yes quite deceiving but in this world we now live in it’s become the norm.
can u teach this guy sniping . it would save everyone heartache and pain

did u open a pack ?

No, just one of many raw pick ups over the years....
Agreed, that is some serious false advertising. I talked to the seller and he said it’ll only be 100-200 cards total
$480 already, I wish I knew which cards he needs, I’d be willing to part with some of mine at these prices
Running him up is becoming a popular hobby.

Even if the consigner asks you to list an item at this price, shouldn’t a high profile seller say no?
