Almost all my cards from the 400 series have dinged corners. Some also exhibit the line Stone193 talked about. Looks like a indentation on the edge of the card. I have as many double as I do base cards, and about half as many to return. This is kinda getting annoying???
<< <i> These cards ding when you look at them wrong. Get them into a safe place quickly! >>
I assume you mean how they are handled when I look at them...Trust me, many are coming out of the pack this way...I'm super careful when handling all cards. I'm especially careful about opening the packs. Granted, I'm ultra-picky about corners, but I'm talking about cards coming out of the pack in PSA 6 or low-end PSA 7 condition due to corner dings. >>
Granted these cards are beautiful, they look and SMELL great! I love collecting these like you do. However, they are not the high quality stock one would expect. Put it to you this way..... Once in a while I drop one of my beloved '78 's on the floor (rug) and most of the time they come out unscathed. Not Heritage, they ding VERY EASILY
<< <i>Here's a quick observation on the chromes. Anybody else noticing that some of them are bending themselves into a U as soon as you pull them from them pack? It seems like about half of them do this, while half are fine. Has this been a problem every year? >>
Thanks Jeff. I thought I was sitting my cards on a table too close to the fireplace. All of my chromes have curled. Need to get some top loaders and try to straighten them out.
You are not going to believe this. Finally got the chance to drive to the Target about 20 minutes from my house tonight and picked up my first 4 blaster boxes of Heritage this year. First pack out of the first box.....big hit..........Duke Snider autograph!!!!! Card RO-DS. I am still in shock.....now back to bust the other 31 packs:>}. That one card already made it for me in terms of the $80 investment.
dang Ken, so much for getting your feet wet, you are now ahead of 90% of the guys here as far as ink goes. Is it for trade??
The chromes have bowed in previous years but it seems like some are really bent this year. Nothing a tight 300 count box won't fix.
As far as damage control, this years product is far better than last years! I know some of you won't believe that, but if you do pull a mint sp put it in a penny sleeve and in your binder right away, these things ding easily. Topps will replace them, it might be wise to wait a week or so, so you only have to ship once.
I will going out tomorrow and scour the countryside - it will be my first real trek! I need some luck! And please - everyone say a prayer for the Stoner - one auto - please?
Although it brought me no response so far, I will post again the only four cards I still need from this years Heritage.

Have not gotten around to figuring out how many SPs I pulled....will do that tomorrow. None of my chromes are bowed at all; look perfectly straight. Don't think that I pulled any whitebacks at all....only card that looks white on the back is actually the autograph. Definitely lighter than the rest of the cards.

Mike - You got first dibs on these chrome if you need 'em. You know what I need.
Kevin - Will likely be selling the Snider to finance the rest of my Heritage breaks or get a nice football auto out of it.
I can either buy or trade, have tons of grey backs, some light backs, SP's and inserts to trade. I will update this list as I whittle it down, TELL ME WHAT YOU NEED!
My name was listed in the Weekly Beckett Hobby Notes re: Heritage.
There seems to be a lot of new insights to 2005 Topps Heritage which is based on the 1956 Topps design. John Basilone had opened a lot of it, several cases in fact. He sent us information that is far too extensive to list in this column but we’ll detail some of it for you.
Perhaps the most interesting piece of information is the number of cards that have light backs versus gray backs. There were similar variations in the original 1956 set and it seems as if the same thing was done here. There are evidently 220 cards in the set that have both light and dark backs.
Other tidbits John offers feature card no. 153. In the 1956 set it was Pittsburgh slugger Frank Thomas. In the 2005 Heritage it is White Sox Slugger Frank Thomas. Thomas evidently does get a ribbing from colleagues when he appears at shows, especially when the Sox Thomas was popular. We recently obtained a baseball signed by the elder Thomas at a J. Paul Sports show in Pittsburgh. He signed it “The Original One” and listed his playing dates.
Great Braves pitchers are featured on card no. 10 (Warren Spahn and John Smoltz). Card no. 252 features a pair of Vernons (Law and Wells); no. 150 offers Dodger sluggers Duke Snider and Shawn Green. Two slugging Yankees had no. 135 (Mantle and Rodriguez).
There is more. We came to the conclusion; however, John just had far too much time on his hands, so we’ll leave it at that. Thanks John and we’ll be in touch.
I would like to thank all of the people who helped me on my 2005 Heritage refractor set /556 .The response was great and It really helped me.Every one was fair and lived up to the deals we made THANKS.I am happy to report that I only need two more.DELMON YOUNG #102 and BRIAN STAVISKY #67 these are the refractors out of /556.If you got 'em I want them have paypal and would make it worth your time Thanks again Dale. gonad02@aol.com

<< <i>While we're on the topic of set collecting...I learned an ez way to sort the cards from a guy at a show - when the smoke clears, you only have to the sort or handle the cards 3 times to get them in order.
Does anyone know this technique or a simpler one?
your friend Mike >>
Don't know if you got an answer Mike, but here is what I have found as I sort.
Out of the pack each card goes in a penny sleeve and into stacks sorted by hundreds (0-99, 100-199, etc.), or insert type. With some series you may have to sort by fifties. Each stack is then sorted by tens. Tens are the sorted easily into consecutive order and stacks are now collated.
First, I must admit that I have not read all 370+ posts in this thread, so I apologize if I'm giving out redundant information.
Thus far, I have opened a 24-pack retail box, purchased at Meijer's, and 13 "blaster" / "booster" / whatever the technical name for the 8-pack retail boxes is.
Here's what I've found: If you can find them, the 8-pack boxes are the way to go. At $20 per box, that's obviously $60 per 24-pack box (plus your local sales tax), which is tough to beat. In the 13 boxes I opened, 6 of them had a "chase card" (SP, insert, or chrome) in every pack. Only one of the 13 boxes had as few as 5 such cards. The others all had either 6 or 7.
The other thing to note is that 7 of my boxes could be opened from the top (once the cellophane was removed). The other 6 boxes (all purchased at K-Mart) had the "cardboard zipper" near the box bottom. I did not notice this until I was opening them. Not sure if this was just a coincidence or not, but the 6 boxes with the "zipper" all had multiple white backs in each pack. Conversely, I did not get any white backs in any of the 7 other 8-pack boxes or the 24-pack retail box. Also, the gum in the zipper packs was a darker pink
As usual, I'm still waiting (I've only been collecting for 35 years) for that once-in-a-lifetime find. My only 2 relics were a Manny Ramirez jersey card and a seat card (I can't even remember who it was). I did well on the chromes and SPs. Interestingly, I opened 128 packs and did not get a single checklist card. Quite different from the 2001 Heritage days when we started fires with them.
Overall, I had a blast opening the cards. It helped to ease the pain of having to watch my Michigan State Spartan basketball team get out-coached again and lose to a team that has exactly 0 players who would be in the top 7 at MSU
great first post! That comment you made about the zipper boxes may help some of us out big time! I would be foaming at the mouth to find booster boxes with all white backs in them. My kmart had 6 boxes and Im going out to check which kind they were.
You also confirmed my theory that the booster boxes don't have any big pulls in them, as I have found that the big pulls come in packs that also have checklists in them.
Thanks for stopping by and we look forward to future posts!
I pulled ALOT of light backs from 3 booster boxes I picked up last week at a Wal Mart. Out of the 24 packs in the three boxes there were 57 light backs.
This was the LAST time I have seen Heritage in my area
A few more things I forgot to mention in my previous post regarding the 13 8-pack retail boxes I opened:
In the 7 "top-open" boxes, I pulled the 2 relics (one jersey, one seat).
In the 6 "zipper" boxes (with all the white backs), no relics, but 2 refractors.
I realize this is too small of a sample to mean anything, but it's something to think about.
One other thing. I have a Bret Boone chrome and a Bret Boone refractor. Now my eyes ain't the greatest, but these cards look identical to me. If it wasn't for the #/1956 and #/556 on the back, I would not have known one was a refractor. What am I missing?
Gemmy...This theory goes back to 2001, if you want the beef you have to go hobby, or the retail 12X2's. Last year the booster boxes were loaded with sp's, of course they were 29.99, but still you could make your money back on each box no prob! If it is true that these boxes this year have a huge assortment of light backs then I would be happy with that.
Keep in mind 13X8=104, and even though ripping 13 boxes may seem like alot he really hasn't even gotten close to the 1:332 odds of the real one autos.
As far as the refractors, if you hold them and see how the light hits them you can see the difference. If in doubt always check the number!
Of course you can't miss the black refractors....something that not too many of us have seen!
I picked up 6 non-zipper booster boxes at Target today. Four were loaded with white backs - yeilding 18 each. The other two produced nil. However, there were no relic cards of any kind. I have ripped over 230 packs, and I have seen zero ink. I did pull a black refractor in my first hobby box, though.
Also, the Basilone spreadsheets are the greatest computer application since Pong - - Thanks.
Collector of 1976 Topps baseball for some stupid reason. Collector of Pittsburgh Pirates cards for a slightly less stupid reason. My Pirates Collection
Picked up a blaster box at Meijer tonight. I'm officially done buying heritage. 4 SPs -- all duplicates. One chrome -- David Ortiz, a duplicate. Bob Feller Flashback -- duplicate. Two packs with nothing at all in the "money" spot. No white backs in the whole box. Obviously, no relics or ink.
Tomorrow, I finish collating what I've got and get around to posting my need list.
Are all of the checkilsts printed on the lighter colored stock?
Collector of 1976 Topps baseball for some stupid reason. Collector of Pittsburgh Pirates cards for a slightly less stupid reason. My Pirates Collection
I bought a hobby box today, 3 chromes, Piazza refractor and no ink, no GU, and little help to my set needs. I also got 24 gashed cards. Man someone needs to break us out of this rut!
Posted an extensive dupe and needs list on the "Sticky Please?" Heritage Trade thread. Hopefully can help and get some cards in return.
After ripping 130 packs I have these observations.
Aside from the zipper boxes I have seen booster boxes with a green stripe on one side and some without the stripe. Some boosters are loaded with light backs, in fact I didn't get any until I bought some while working in Columbus, OH for the past two weeks. At home in FL the boosters were not as good.
My haul so far - no autos, 97 light backs, 2 Flashback Relics (both Aaron, one is available for trade), 1 Arod Clubhouse Relic (also available for the right trade), 9 Flashbacks w/4 dupes, 7 New Age Performers w/ 1 dupe, 5 Then and Now w/ 2 dupes, 18 Chrome, 6 Refractors (all up for trade). Many SPs but the Short Print set is not going well, with some of the variations also missing in action.
Had the opportunity to buy product in 2 distant sections of the country - hopefully this will help us in figuring out where the long lost SPs can be found. Back home to FL this Friday.
Aiming to collect the all 1-475 w/SPs, Inserts, and the Chromes. I think I'm about half way there.
Went to Wally World at lunchtime today, and thankfully the moose out front didn't say "Sorry folks...We're closed." Looks like the vendor was just there to stock their sportscard section and I bought a whole 2x12 box of Heritage. I got some pretty good pulls in some key SP's and chromes, but on the second to last pack I got this Frank Robby. As a Reds fan, this was a really cool pull.
I have barely bought a new card in 12 years and am having a blast with this set. I had to run errands tonight and bought a zipper box at K-Mart and this Bob Feller auto popped out in the 2nd pack. Two for two on ink today, but I'm sure this is my one lucky card day for the decade. It was interesting to see that in both boxes, I got about 80% light/white backs. I'm about ready to pull for master set number two, but will stop the setbuilding after it's done. I'll have tons to trade and will post wantlists and available cards as I have time. I can't believe how many boxes I've bought the last few weeks.
Great pulls Todd! Pandrews pulled the Robinson and got some righteous bucks for it on ebay a few weeks ago! You are definitely living large and takin charge!!!
I got a retail box today at target and pulled a ton of white backs if anyone is still lookin for any of them. Just give me a pm.
PS. I dont know if this has been brought up because I havent read all of the hundreds of posts on this topic, but has anyone seen on the back on the packs where you can write in to get insert cards? The part about "potential canadian winners"? LOL if this has been brought up, sorry, if not you have to read it. Its a crack up.

Todd -
Just wondering since I'm in Columbus, OH on business. Haven't bought any boxes from either of the Marts here, just Target and Meijer. Will have to check them today.
The doorbell rang and I wasnt expecting anything so I was surprised to see the UPS man at the front door. I signed for the package and looked at the box and it was from topps. I sat down at the kitchen table and opened the box.
Well, for those of you who remember I had written topps and asked them about the lightbacks, as well as complain about the amount of boxes 16 total (12 hobby and 4 retail) I had bought and still was 2 cards short in finishing my set.
Well, I open the box and on the top of a white box stuffed in a yellow envelope were the 2 cards I was missing..
Happy, I saw there was another yellow envelope and much to my surprise I opened it and 2 autograph cards 1 Topps legend Erskine and the other a Banks Auto.
Inside the white Box...every single SP in the set..the base sp's as well as the high numbers 398-475..
Thanks topps...
So for those that wondered why waste my time writing topps when I could "just trade" for the 2 cards...thats why!!!

Interestingly, I opened 128 packs and did not get a single checklist card. Quite different from the 2001 Heritage days when we started fires with them.
Overall, I had a blast opening the cards. It helped to ease the pain of having to watch my Michigan State Spartan basketball team get out-coached again and lose to a team that has exactly 0 players who would be in the top 7 at MSU
to find booster boxes with all white backs in them. My kmart had 6 boxes and Im going out to check which kind they were.
You also confirmed my theory that the booster boxes don't have any big pulls in them, as I have found that the big pulls come
in packs that also have checklists in them.
Thanks for stopping by and we look forward to future posts!
Kevin
Are you saying that the odds of getting ink in the Booster boxes is slim?

What am I missing?
were loaded with sp's, of course they were 29.99, but still you could make your money back on each box no prob! If it is true that
these boxes this year have a huge assortment of light backs then I would be happy with that.
Keep in mind 13X8=104, and even though ripping 13 boxes may seem like alot he really hasn't even gotten close to the 1:332 odds of the
real one autos.
As far as the refractors, if you hold them and see how the light hits them you can see the difference. If in doubt always check the number!
Of course you can't miss the black refractors....something that not too many of us have seen!

Got a A-Rod Bat Card in the first pack... And one SP....I was happy with the Bat card, My first ever. I am a vintage collector primarily.
JPARCHITECTUS
Oh, did I mention the J. Edgar Hoover cut sig?

I have barely bought a new card in 12 years and am having a blast with this set. I had to run errands tonight and bought a zipper box at K-Mart and this Bob Feller auto popped out in the 2nd pack. Two for two on ink today, but I'm sure this is my one lucky card day for the decade. It was interesting to see that in both boxes, I got about 80% light/white backs. I'm about ready to pull for master set number two, but will stop the setbuilding after it's done. I'll have tons to trade and will post wantlists and available cards as I have time. I can't believe how many boxes I've bought the last few weeks.

yet I did manage to pull some ink

Thanks for the tip.
Keith
Thanks,
Todd
