I have it from a very good source that a couple thousand high grade football cards from the 60,s and early 70,s will be on the market soon. From a quick peek its more then enough to change the tide in the set reg race in many sets.
hmm stay tuned or for the inside word or everyone can just email couldabeen the king of the sports card agents
Now that the Redskins season is finally over I can turn my attention back to the task at hand. The task of teaching Mr. Fuzz and Mr. Mosh what 60's football collecting is really all about.
I see you've been a busy little beaver lately, scurrying around scooping up these misc. oddball sets and picking up, shall we say ... uncontested olympic medals.
Well, my friend ... It just so happens that all of that "low hanging fruit" you've been collecting lately, is the very same fruit I've been picking for years. The only reason it's still under the radar, is because all of mine has remained in the juicy raw form. If I remember correctly, it's the same oddball fruit that you use to turn your nose up at, and proclaim as "not real football cards."
I find it ironic that your demise will come from these very same sets. I just wanted to give you notice that the tide shall be turning very shortly in olympic-land, as my 3 cases of card savers just came in, and I'm having a little sleeving submission party this weekend in your honor. I call it the "Fear the Oddball Fuzz Medals No longer" party.
You'll be seeing about 40 new sets poping up very shortly on the PSA set registry and in the '60's football olympics. Sets with names you've never heard of. Obscure little sets that a mere "mainstream set builder" such as yourself has never even dreamed of ... and Yes, some of them are even round!
I just wanted to give you fair warning, so you can enjoy the weight of all those bogus medals for a little while longer. I'd imagine the green stain around your neck (from all that "fools gold") will be hard to scrub off when I'm through with you.
I was talking to Art yesterday and he mentioned that my last "smack talk Fuzz post" on this thread might have come off a little too harsh. So this is my official "Fuzz knows I'm just messing with him" post (complete with cute little smiley faces)
My initial reaction was that Art probably just read it wrong, (as we all know he's usually half in the bag when he's on here) ... but I reread it a couple of times, and I think I can see where someone might have taken it wrong.
I think most of you that follow my antics know that my tounge is almost always in my cheek ... but once again, just for the record ... I'm still a card carrying member of the Fear the Fuzz club, and I don't think he's loosing much sleep over my feeble attempts to dethrown him any time soon.
On a similar note .... earlier in this thread (or in a different football thread?) a few of the guys mentioned that they thought Lillo should scan his cards and post pictures on the set registry. Jim agreed that he thought it was a good idea, but that he just doesn't have the time to personally do it.
I'm happy to announce that I've taken the liberty of helping Jim out ... by posting several classified ads on Monster.com for him to hire somebody full time to help sort, scan, and register his cards for all of us to see. So if any of you know of someone in the Jersey area looking for work, please forward their resume to Lillo's e-mail address.
Jim mentioned that he had "a few acres out back" ... so I bet that trailer would be no problem at all. Plus now that Jim's picked up a '76 Crane Disc set, he'd probably sleep better at night knowing that guard dog was around for extra security.
What are these round things you sent me with psa 10 on the top?
Do I have to keep these?
I like the Stancrafts better--plus it puts me above the evil empire!
Well, the 2,000 plus card submission is coming along just in time for the big spring party--Brian is coming over to help and maybe the moster.com guy I am hiring to put scans up of my 23,000 plus psa cards can chip in. Jay & the Americans is a go--Hootie is a maybe.
The Fuzz will fall but not as hard as the evil empire.
I'm just happy to help the cause! The evil empire seems to have finished a few sets and slowed down on some others, when he makes his move into the Baseball world that should slow him down a bit. You and Fuzz have been chipping away at his flank and I imagine if Fuzz can get his Coke cap sets and some of the other oddball issues added .... between that and your next big submission, you all can take another chunk out of his lead.
Hootie would be a fool to miss the big day!
Mike
PS - Speaking of oddball issues, do any of you all know what the largest size holder PSA has available? I've got some strange sized sets I was going to e-mail them about possibly grading.
<< <i>I'm sure that the evil empire and Jeremy are in all-night sessions >>
I'm not sure Jeremy stays up that late? He's normally out on the golf course by 7:00am everyday. After a hard day of golf, champagne brunch and his evening massage ... he's usually pretty wiped out come suppertime.
Well I guess it does no good to claim that I am 4th in 5 mainstream sets(60 Topps, 62 Topps, 63 Fleer, 64 Philly and 67 Topps) and 5th in 3 others(64 65 and 66 Topps) or that the Evil Empire and Fuzzdude have gotten to where they are on the back of sets(?) I never heard of or that I have 700 fb cards from the 60s ready to go out to PSA for grading.
The Evil Empire and his conniving adviser Jeremy have found a way to stretch their lead benefitting from all that golf together and Fuzz is so far ahead of me I need binoculars.
So I have been debating coming up with a new strategy:
1)Fire my Olympics Coach Couldabeena--nah can't do that--he did give me the Stancraft set
2)Outbid the hyperaggressive ShoppingLucy on ebay who is bidding whatever it takes to buy psa 8 or better fb 1954-69. I would go broke.
3)Lobby Mike to change the rules--nah, can't be a wuss about this.
No--its something different but I promise that in two months my position will not look as pathetic as it does now.
Conniving? I'm not sure it's secret or illegal that work together with MOSH (I'll agree with Empire, but not the evil part). We do seem to work together well to make an Olympic Medal winning team. Not a bad showing considering all of the stellar competition. Plus 5 medals, including 2 GOLD!
It's not easy with all of these new fangled events. 1969 Packers Drenks Pins??? Does Fuzz get a Gold and Silver for that one? That 1960 Bell Brand Rams looks interesting.
But in the meantime I do happen to do most of my business with other collectors and dealers. I connive with a lot of different parties. And I promise, everyone gets a fair shake.
I don't discount the fact that he can buy top rated sets and surpass me in vintage.
Historically no matter what the sport those with true vintage sets have been more committed to them than collectors who do 60s and later. I am hoping this will continue to be true.
I will just try to complete all my sets in psa 8 and better and if he buys enough sets to pass me then it is what it is.
LOL! Thanks for popping your head in Kirk to take us out back to the woodshed. Very funny.
Place that Larry Wilson on any other FB Dealers website and you'll see what high pricing really means. Compared to some other mid-60s HOF Rookies in football or baseball in PSA 9, Mr. Wilson is a bargain.
Thanks for the color commentary - all in fun of course - why else do we do this??!!??
Sixdart, Are you buying or selling?? I'm sure Jeremy or Near Mint Mike could give you the low down per year as those guy's certainly know their stuff!
I do know that on Jim Brown cards as with most high dollar cards, it depends on the way the card looks inside the holder.
Just as an example: a weak 1962 Topps PSA 8 that might be considered a slider may only bring in the 850.00 range. But a strong PSA 8 example with great eye appeal might easily bring 1000.00 to 1100.00 or higher.
So it is hard to pin point really. Strong PSA 8 examples of Jim Brown usually do pretty darn well.
The centering was very nice and the black ink registry (where his name is) - the fish eggs weren't as prominent either. SMR was $200 and used the buy-it-now feature for $215. I don't know if I over paid, but it looked like a very nice example.
Ahh Wolfie, LOL .....Steamin Pile, that's a good one!! Complete with visual aid. You actually really did make me laugh on that one. My hat is off to you.
Still begs the question .......... If you had the chance to do it all over again, would you still buy it or would you punt??
Many help me with my sets. They check the registries and sell me cards that I need or in some cases give them to me. See what you are missing.....you too can contribute to the chase.
But Brian is in a different class--he literally has every card memorized that I need in probably 50 sets and is constantly on the lookout for them...and I repeat I do not employ him..he does it because he likes the thrill of the chase.
Not 100--100 more from what I have completed---you never heard that? Send me your e-mail and I will send tou a few threads.
I just got your e-mail and decided to come see what pearls of wisdom you'd woven into our little 60's thread. When I get here you've deleted it. What gives with that? Did you pull a "shouldabeena" and cross that constantly moving gray line between jest and bad taste? You weren't ragg'n on my round cards again were you? Don't make me staple those TANG posters to my wall and send you photo's of them! LOL
It's funny you guys are (were?) talking about Mayrose cards. I was just upstairs filling out a submission form to send in another set of them I picked up last month. I'm hoping to jump into first or second place with this set as they look super clean. Speaking of oddball sets, do any of you know if the 1970 Topps Supers need to be sent in as tallboys, or will they let them slip in with the other regular 70's issues?
The fine line between jest and bad taste is right Mike. My line was a little scewed on the bad taste side of things I'm afraid. Too bad you didn't read it though ..... because I know you would have appreciated it the most.
As far as Supers go, I believe you have to submit them as tall boy status. However, I am not positive on that.
Don't sweat it Kirk, I've certainly crossed that line more than a couple of times! Fortunately, most of the football guys are pretty thick skined and understand that we are just messing around.
But as for Mr. Lillo and his house of cards, the way I see it ... any 100 set collector that doesn't appreciate the sheer beauty of Crane Disc's just doesn't deserve to have people help him out. I've been talking to Brian behind Lillo's back lately, and he's just not happy with the dental plan Lillo is providing him. I think MOSH is preparing to offer Brian a much nicer benifits package, and I've certainly noticed Jeremy's teeth are always pearly white!
too bad, that post was just what this thread needed. but I respect your decision to take it down, just glad I got a glance.
Mike, you lasted as coach almost as long as Rudy T did with the Lakers. But don't worry, the Oakland Raiders will be needing someone in about 9 months.
No, what this thread needs is to get back to the whole purpose of the thread which is a competition among different collectors as to the best football sets of the 60s.
I think Fuzz is playing to win--I am certainly playing to win(although it may not be apparent by the standings) and does anyone doubt the Evil Empire is playing to win?
DAV, There is absolutely no doubt what so ever that the BIG 3 which you alluded to and you are a part of certainly PLAYS TO WIN!! We all got that. It's a given. You pound that home every chance you get.
The rest of us are all just roll players ........ except for Wolfbear. He is the SECRET WEAPON!!
Please change the title of this thread over to "The official razz on Lillo's attempt to catch up with the 1960's olympic leaders" ... since he obviously seems confused about it's subject content.
Mike
Hey Lillo,
We still need to discuss my golden parachute termination package! Also, Fuzz, MOSH, Wolfbear and Art were all over here on Saturday running laps around my backyard track. The combine went well, and they're all looking pretty strong! (except Art kept having to stop for a cigg. break every 10 minutes)
Must be Couldabeena putting in a bid for me. Either that or you do strange stuff when you are losing so badly in the Olympics. Or maybe Brian is making a speculative bid for his own account????
JIM i spent a day going over your sets and was about to email you when you updated your 66 set with all the cards i pull and priced but that 100 card. So next thing i did was to list a couple 63,s you need with a bin at half the price by the way of what you just spent on that 66 and you did not bid them so i am a lttle confused myself ,by the way i would have sold you my card #100 for half of what you paid but i thank you as i just sold it to the underbidder at his max bid
Being entirely truthful here, it is a rare day when I check ebay. Brian does all my ebay buying and not too many cards slip through the cracks but he is a full-time student and a varsity athlete at a Division 1 school and has a job on the side.
So, just respond to me directly and I will pay you a nice price for what I need.

You guys go ahead and fight over the medals
for the 'Synchronized Swimming' and 'Ice Dancing' sets of our Olympics.

Jethro would be dependable because he can't leave the state for some reason.

How can they beat the 10.0 Stancraft???? or the legendary Mayrose Franks set?????
And they haven't even factored in a mystery seller selling his sets to me.
As you know Mike--I do not submit myself so I am not sure about the largest holder PSA has.

For some reason it's nearly impossible to find a copy of that stupid dam Claud Crabb card that is centered well ...
"How about a little fire Scarecrow ?"
You're a strange guy.
I love all the sets I collect--except those Crane Discs that Mike sent me and maybe 1970 Kelloggs.
How can anyone not like Mayrose Franks???
And I am working on well over 100 vintage sets in psa 8 or better including all post-war sets 1948-69 all sports and 10 or more pre-war sets.
And most importantly how dare you call Brian a flunkie. He is a fine young man who helps me with my sets because he loves the hobby.
Dav
I was not aware that Brian was the one and only that helped you with your cards.
I figured you had employeed a small army.
He most certainly is a fine young man and doesn't deserve a crack like that.
It was certainly not intended at him personally.

INSANE BID Ebay # 8768023206 1966 topps a pop 10 psa 8 #100 Paul Rocchester $493 bucks ?
That bid is insane even by my standards as i was the 3rd high bidder at 66 bucks.

500.00 for a PSA 8 Jerry Rochester card??
I think I paid about a 10th of that, a year or so ago for one.
What is the logic on that one Brian??
What am I missing here, what is your master plan?
Hard to wrap that one around my brain.
