The big upgrade this year for me was my Three Dollar gold piece. I upgraded from an AU-55 coin, which ended up in an MS-62 slab to an MS-63 coin which IS in an MS-63 slab. I also upgraded my Indian $5 gold from an AU-58 that ended up in an MS-63 slab to an MS-64 which is in an MS-64 slab. BTW the AU-58 Indian was in an AU-58 holder. I cracked it, re-submitted it and got an MS-63.

Yea I thought that Elwood had a nice silver dollar there until I saw that little fraction under the wreath. The 1796-7 half dollar is THE one silver type coin that just too expensive for me to swing. It's been out of reach for me since I started collecting type coins in high school.

Bill, they were generous with your half eagle. It isn't a surprise though....I see the AU to MS jump all the time.

Here are some of my purchases this year. However, I think elwood is gonna win this thread regardless... image

MS66DCAM that I was able to add to my set this year. Technically, it wasn't a purchase as I worked out a trade deal with another forum member in order to acquire it.

    image

MS67CAM "Birthmark Die" variety. I had been looking for one for quite a while. Usually these are graded DCAM; too pricey for me to buy already slabbed, and I hadn't been able to find one raw. Paid a strong premium, but it was worth it.

It has been an interesting year. I don't always plan what I am going to buy until I see it.

Here is an 1855 MS65 RB Large cent.

    John,

That Baybridge is awesome! My daughter loves the Baybridge commom. I considered showing her those pics but if I do, she'll never look at her coin the same again.

Barry. there is something wrong with the 8 in the date on that SLQ, you should take it back, malformed numeral I think image

Lanlord - I think that means the coin was made New Year's Eve, just as the date was changing in the dies. You know, like an odometer rolling over...

2004 was a good year. It was also the first year that I spent more time here than in rec.collecting.coins (my previous online educational forum). I learned here that the plastic surrounding a coin may determine value more than the properties of the coin itself (sample slabs, old slab varieties, grading services' optimistic mistakes, etc.) The best news of the year for me was hearing that I had been removed from the long list of defendants that Accugrade thought hurt their business through online postings.

This is one of the less expensive coins I purchased in 2004, but one which gave me lots of fun. Try to decipher the grade, from an admittedly dfifferent standard of grading than most collectors/dealers use these days.

I was thrilled to get this BG-722 California Fractional 1/4 1872 Washington Head in PCGS MS-67 from Don Kagin in January 2004. I lost a chance to acquire this same pocket piece 6-7 years ago.
