If this is a contest I agree that Elwood is going to win, although we have not head from the likes of TDN ,TahoeDale and others yet. For my part I spent way to much on coins this year adding 60 or so to my type set and 30 plus to my certified Bust half set. Here are a few of the type coins. I think this was a good year to trade PAPER for coins.
NGC MS63 (crappy picture because of computer issues at the time of photographing--ie, I was using a crappy computer and it was too slow to work with big pictures)
As unbelievable as it may seem, ALL of my coins were purchased in 2004 starting with the FUN show in January where I picked up most of my $5 Indian set.
Some very lovely coins!! If anyone is interested in a journey to the Dark Side, I've built a 30-piece gallery of the choicest examples of medallic art I have obtained in 2004: Askari's 2004 Medallic Gallery.
2004 was a pretty poor buying year for me. I did my stocking stuffing in 2002 and 2003. However I did acquire one thing this year that I was very happy with and should be a keeper...at least for a while.
1900 original proof set with orig mint wrappers and envelope. All coins grading NGC PF65-66. This set also was ordered with 2 extra pairs of minor coinage but only the cents survived. All 3 are flashy 80% red, PF66RB's.
I already have my radar keyed in on my first potential purchase for 2005, an original AU-55 "uncommon" date, draped bust dime. We'll see.
Shifted gears this year away from small cents. Bought the first 2 patterns from Rick Kay, the last from Boiler78.
"My friends who see my collection sometimes ask what something costs. I tell them and they are in awe at my stupidity." (Baccaruda, 12/03).I find it hard to believe that he (Trump) rushed to some hotel to meet girls of loose morals, although ours are undoubtedly the best in the world. (Putin 1/17) Gone but not forgotten. IGWT, Speedy, Bear, BigE, HokieFore, John Burns, Russ, TahoeDale, Dahlonega, Astrorat, Stewart Blay, Oldhoopster, Broadstruck, Ricko, Big Moose.
I had a GREAT year in 2004. I started to focus on a clipped type set while upgrading my Lincoln clips where possible. In something like chronological order, here are my favorite pick-ups:
